1-1947705 Cristini, Luca and Radaelli, Matteo Bartolomeo Colleoni e le compagnie di ventura nel XV secolo Colleoni was born at Solza, in the countryside of Bergamo (then part of the Duchy of Milan), where he prepared his magnificent mortuary chapel, the Cappella Colleoni, in a shrine that he seized when it was refused him by the local confraternity, the Consiglio della Misericordia. His family was a noble one, exiled with the rest of the Guelphs by the Visconti. Bartolomeo's father Paolo seized the castle of Trezzo and held it until he was assassinated by his cousins, probably acting on order of Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan.

The young Colleoni trained at first in the retinue of Filippo d'Arcello, the new master of Piacenza. Then he entered the service of various condottieri, beginning with Braccio da Montone, who was skirmishing in Apulia, profiting from the struggles between Alfonso of Aragon and Louis of Anjou during the weak sovereignty of Queen Joan II by taking Alfonso's cause, and then of Carmagnola. After the latter was put to death at Venice (1432), Colleoni passed to direct service of the Venetian Republic, entering on the major phase of his career.

Although Gianfrancesco Gonzaga was nominally commander-in-chief, Colleoni was in fact the true leader of the army. He recaptured many towns and districts for Venice from the Milanese, and when Gonzaga went over to the enemy, Colleoni continued to serve the Venetians under Erasmo da Narni (known as Gattamelata) and Francesco Sforza, winning battles at Brescia, Verona, and on the Lake of Garda... 1 vol, 80 pgs 2014 ITALY, SOLDIER SHOP

1-76850 di Correggio, Francisco Balbi trans by E. Bradford SIEGE OF MALTA 1565, THE Translated from the Spanish Edition of 1568, This is the history of one of the great battles of the world, written by a private soldier who was an eye-witness. The siege of Malta was a crucial moment in the long struggle between Islam and Christendom for domination of the Mediterranean, fought out by unequal forces on the small island which commands the sea-routes at the centre of that sea. The Knights of St John were a survival from the medieval world, the largest of the surviving crusading orders, and they had been driven out of their base on Rhodes in the eastern Mediterranean after a great onslaught by the Turks in 1522. Now, forty-three years later, the Turkish ruler, Suleyman the Magnificent, who had been the victor at Rhodes, was determined to finish them off. He sent out a huge armada, carrying the pick of his army, under two commanders. Against this powerful force, the Knights could only raise a handful of men and mercenaries, and had to depend on the fortifications they had raised in the thirty-five years since they first came to Malta, which bore no comparison to the massive walls and ditches on Rhodes. Francisco Balbi di Correggio was a humble soldier of fortune who enlisted under the charismatic command of the Grand Master of the Order, Jean de la Valette. The extraordinary drama that unfolded after the first appearance of the Turkish fleet in the summer of 1565 is told in his own words, giving equal credit to the courage and leadership of the Knights and the grim determination of the ordinary people of Malta. 30+ b/w illust/drawings, index. 1 vol, 224 pgs 2005 UK, BOYDELL & BREWER

1-48150 Hall, Bert S. WEAPONS AND WARFARE IN RENAISSANCE EUROPE One of the best on the era from the 100 Years' War to the 30 Years' War, it is particularly strong on the development of gunpowder weapons, b/w illust, biblio, index.

Explores the history of gunpowder in Europe from the thirteenth century, when it was first imported from China, to the sixteenth century, as firearms became central to the conduct of war. Bridging the fields of military history and the history of technology-and challenging past assumptions about Europe's 'gunpowder revolution'-Hall discovers a complex and fascinating story. Military inventors faced a host of challenges, he finds, from Europe's lack of naturally occurring saltpeter-one of gunpowder's major components-to the limitations of smooth-bore firearms. 1 vol, 296 pgs 1997 BALTIMORE, JOHNS HOPKINS

1-200410 Mallett, Michael MERCENARIES AND THEIR MASTERS - Warfare in Renaissance Italy Reprint of Michael Mallett's classic study of Renaissance warfare in Italy. His account of the age of the condottieri -- the mercenary captains of fortune -- and of the soldiers who fought under them is set in the wider context of the Italian society of the time and of the warring city-states who employed them.

The book concentrates on the 15th century, a confused period of turbulence and transition when standing armies were formed in Italy and more modern types of military organization took hold across Europe. But it also looks back to the middle ages and the 14th century, and forward to the Italian wars of the 16th century when foreign armies disputed the European balance of power on Italian soil. 1 vol, 304 pgs 2009 UK. 1-213230 May, Timothy THE MONGOL ART OF WAR The Mongol armies that established the largest land empire in history, stretching across Asia and into eastern Europe, are imperfectly understood. Often they are viewed as screaming throngs of horsemen who swept over opponents by sheer force of numbers rather than as disciplined regiments that carried out planned and practiced maneuvers.

In this pioneering book, Timothy May demonstrates that the Mongol military developed from a tribal levy into a complex military organization. He describes the make-up of the Mongol army from its inception to the demise of the Mongol empire, and he shows how it was the strength, quality, and versatility of Mongol military organization that made them the preeminent warriors of their time. 1 vol, 240 pgs 2017 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-209870 Prelli, Alberto SOTTO LE BANDIERE DI SAN MARCO Through unpublished documents, pamphlets, and military treatises, this covers the organization and the daily lives of the soldiers of the Serenissima Republic of Venice. It examines the various specialties of the infantry, cavalry, transport engineers, and artillery -- both in the countryside and on the galleys and galleasses.

A chapter is reserved for women soldiers, wives, partners, and prostitutes, who shared the hard life of their men. There are many curiosities from the evolution of armament to payroll, from food to clothing.

The precise and colorful plates of Pietro comrades, then, give us a vivid picture of details of the men who fought in the ranks of the Venetian forces in that distant and sometimes forgotten century. Includes 24 color plates (with English summary). 1 vol, 224 pgs 2012 ITALY, ITINERA PROGETTI

1-72385 Solum, Terje illust by Dag R. Frognes SAGA OF THE SAMURAI #5 Shingen: The Conqueror - The Kai Takeda 5 (1559-1568) The 5th book on the history of the Takeda clan continues to follow the life of Shingen and the Takeda clan of Kai through a series of wars fought between 1559 and 1568. A high point in this history is the fourth battle at Kawanakajima in 1561, which was an extremely bloody one according to sources. The discussion of Shingen's invasion of Kozuke Province to the east will be accompanied by a detailed study of the campaign against the Nagano family of Minowa. Kozuke Province was also a gateway to the Kanto Plain, which eventually became a battle arena for the Takeda army.

The book will also provide a detailed analysis of the intelligence-gathering activities of Takeda's shinobi unit. We will also look more closely at the history and legend of Shingen's kagemusha (shadow-general), and consider whether it is based on historical fact, or whether it is simply fiction constructed at a later date. Of interest are also the rules and regulations for the samurai families that the Takeda clan codified in the book Koshu hatto no shidai. This book was particularly important for Shingen's family, but was also consulted by samurai clans throughout the land during the Edo period. 1 vol, 112 pgs 2013 US, BROOKHURST PRESS
