1-205214 CONSOLIDATED B-36: Convair B-36 Peacemaker: Visual History Conceived during WWII and first flown on 8 August 1946, seven decades later the Convair B-36 remains the largest bomber in the world. The requirements for the aircraft that became the B-36 were born out of concern about the German advances in Europe. The US Army Air Corps issued a requirement for a very long-range heavy bomber-an aircraft capable of striking targets in Europe from bases in North America.

Due to changing needs, the aircraft was not fully developed until after the end of WWII. Despite its original role, the operational B-36 quickly became the mainstay of the cold war US Air Force strategic bomber arm. This title provides extensive photographic coverage of the aircraft in all stages of its development, production and deployment. Variants covered are the XB-36; XC-99; B-36A; B-36B; B-36C; B-36D; RB-36D; RB-36E; B-36F; RB-36F; GRB-36F; B-36H; NB-36H; RB-36H; B-36J; and YB-60. Many of the period photos are full color and are supplemented with line drawings and illustrations. 1 vol, 120 pgs 2015 US, AMPERSAND PUBLISHING

1-222630 Bowman, Martin The Vought F4U Corsair - Images of War series First flown in 1940, the prototype Vought F4U Corsair instantly became the fastest fighter in the world and the fastest US aircraft of any description. Powered by a huge 18-cylinder Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp engine driving an enormous 13 feet 4 inch propeller, the first Corsairs were capable of 417mph. This figure would rise to nearly 450mph in later versions. 120 color & black and white illustrations

Production began in 1941, not only by Vought but also by Goodyear and Brewster, and the F4U entered service with the US Navy in September 1942. The aircraft subsequently came to be extensively used from land and sea by the US Marines, Royal Navy and Royal New Zealand Air Force. Famous squadrons like VMF-214 'The Black Sheep' and VF-17 'Jolly Rogers', along with many others, maintained total ascendancy over the Japanese for the rest of the war - a remarkable achievement for a single type.

After the Second World War the Corsair remained in production and was used with distinction by the French in Indo-China and again by the US Navy in Korea. Since then Corsairs have achieved significant success in air races and more and more are being restored to fly for museums and warbird enthusiasts the world over.

This comprehensive new book combines technical information and detailed development history with a fascinating combat history told, in many cases, by the Second World War and Korean War pilots themselves. Well researched, readable and illustrated with scores of rare and previously unpublished photographs, The Vought F4U Corsair is the perfect book for any fan of the 'bent wing bird'.

The 'other' IIIrd Reich fighter is a symbol of technology as well as sturdiness. A mythical plane, the FW 190 first appeared in 1941 and, from thenon, was to be a real problem to Allied air forces. From the Eastern front to the Defense of the Reich, including the Normandy campaign, the fighter that the last German aces flew with distinction, is illustrated in all its variety of camouflage and schemes and markings.

1-969015 Buttler, Tony 015 COLD WAR DELTA PROTOTYPES: The Fairey Deltas, Convair Century-series, and Avro 707 Examines the development of the delta wing in Britain and America, and the way in which experimental aircraft like the Fairey Deltas proved their potential and versatility. In Britain it covers the Fairey Delta 1 and Fairey Delta 2, the proposed Fairey Delta Rocket Fighter and huge Delta 3 long range interceptor, and the Avro 707. On the American side, it examines the Convair XF-92 and XF-92A, the development of the Delta Dagger/Delta Dart family, and the Convair Sea Dart - the world's only supersonic seaplane.

Although Gloster produced the delta wing Javelin, and Boulton Paul its P.111 research aircraft, Fairey and Avro were the champions of the delta in Britain.

Meanwhile in America, with the exception of Douglas's Navy jet fighter programmes, Convair largely had the delta wing to itself. These development lines, one on each side of the Atlantic, had essentially the same objective - to produce high-speed fighter aircraft. In Britain, the Fairey Delta 2 went on to break the World Air Speed Record in spectacular fashion, but it failed to win a production order. In contrast Convair received major orders for two jet fighter types and one jet bomber. At the same time, the British Avro company built the 707 family of research aircraft, which led to the famous Vulcan, to show how the delta wing could be adopted for a highly successful subsonic bomber.

1-SS10205 Dann, Richard P-40 WARHAWK IN ACTION The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, a US single-engine, single-seat, all-metal fighter and ground-attack aircraft, first took to the air in 1939. In service throughout World War II and used by most Allied powers during the war, the P-40 was the third most-produced American pursuit plane. A total of 13,738 of the aircraft were produced by the time output ceased in November of 1944.

The P-40 first saw combat with British Commonwealth forces in June 1941, but it was in the Pacific that the aircraft became an icon. Decorated with menacing shark mouths, P-40s served as workhorse fighters of the American Volunteer Group - better known as the 'Flying Tigers' -- in China.

The P-40 was the first Allied fighter to be supplied to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease for use against the Germans. After Pearl Harbor, the US Army Air Force flew the P-40 extensively in the Mediterranean Theater and during Operation Torch and the subsequent advance northwards into Europe.

Illustrated with 168 photographs, numerous color profiles, and detailed line drawings, this volume traces the development of the various modifications of the P-40 throughout the war years and carries on with a few contemporary shots of surviving P-40s still going through their paces at airshows today. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2016 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

Wind tunnels could not provide the necessary data so pilots had to risk their safety in experimental aircraft which, for their time, achieved phenomenal performance. Supported by full-color artwork including three-view plates of the two D-558 models and a technical view of the D-2 cockpit. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2019 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

Knight and Heaslip were experienced military men and formally trained artists who, combining an authenticity of experience and an artistic mastery of illustration, produced powerful artwork that influenced a generation of Americans, creating air-minded adults and youngsters, many of whom flocked to US military service after Pearl Harbor. 1-969013 Hallion, Richard 013 THE WRIGHT FLYERS 1899-1916: The Kites, Gliders, and Aircraft that Launched the Air Age This book traces the Wright Brothers' story, from their first success on that cold December day throughout their glory years to their eventual eclipse by other aviators. It explores in detail the process that lead them to their pioneering craft and their many subsequent achievements over the following years, and highlights their enduring importance in the age of modern flight.

Orville and Wilbur Wright, two bicycle-making brothers from Dayton, Ohio, secured their place as the most famous names in aviation history when, on December 17, 1903, they made the first powered, controlled, and sustained heavier-than-air flight. But their success over the cold and windswept Carolina dunes that day has overshadowed their many other accomplishments before and after that historic flight. The Wrights' progression from theory to analysis to ground-testing components and wing shapes, and then to flight-testing kites, gliders, and their first powered aeroplane, marked the world's first successful 'X-Plane' research and development program. They established a template all subsequent aircraft have followed, one still relevant in the era of hypersonic flight and drone research. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2019 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

Arranged chronologically by theater, the book gives a complete organizational breakdown of the units of both sides, including the units and aircraft used in the proxy wars fought in Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East and elsewhere as well as the 'frontline' in Germany.

Each section includes a compact history of the role and impact of aircraft on the course of the Cold War, as well as orders of battle, lists of commanders and aces such as Nikolai Sutyagin, Randall Cunningham, Giora Epstein, and Majid Zugbi. Every type of aircraft is featured, including the numerous variations and types of well-known models, such as the MiG-15, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 and the Harrier, through to lesser-known aircraft, such as the Lockheed P-80, and the Myasishchev M-4 Bison. Each aircraft profile is accompanied by exhaustive specifications, as well as details of individual and unit markings. Packed with 250 color profiles of every major type of combat aircraft from the era, The Essential Aircraft Identification Guide: Aircraft of the Cold War is an essential reference guide for modelers, military historians and aircraft enthusiasts.

1-965010 Paloque, Gerald 010 F-4 Phantom Volume 1: US Navy/USMC Volume 1 covers US Navy and USMC fighters with hundreds of color side views, top downs, nose art, and insignia. Also includes black and white photos. (Vol. 2 covers USAF and Export versions -- see book number 965013).

In 1953, McDonnell tasked one of his engineer teams with modernizing the F3H Demon. In July 1959, the F4H-1 was officially christened Phantom II as a tribute to the McDonnell FH-1, the first American jet plane designed in 1953 and intended for carrier-borne from the outset.

Designed originally as a carrier-borne interceptor armed only with missiles, its beginnings were so promising that the USAF adopted it as a tactical fighter ands was quickly followed by an impressive number of other air forces around the world which explains why certain examples are still in service today.

1-969014 Wolf, William 014 WORLD WAR II US GUNSHIPS YB-40 FLYING FORTRESS and XB-41 LIBERATOR BOMBER ESCORTS Describes the politics, development, and associated problems of both escort types. The XB-40 and XB-41 were secret, little-known experimental modifications of the B-17F and B-24D, respectively, into heavily-armed bomber gunships sometimes referred to as bomber escorters. They were developed during early World War II in response to the lack of a USAAF long-range fighter aircraft able to escort and protect regular B-17 formations making the round trip from Britain deep into Germany.

Unfortunately, these 'protecters' were found wanting in several ways -- after the addition of guns and ammunition they became overweight and tail-heavy causing center of gravity problems and each encountered numerous delays in the development and delivery of their various armament additions and improvements, particularly the Bendix chin turret.
