1-205214 CONSOLIDATED B-36: Convair B-36 Peacemaker: Visual History Conceived during WWII and first flown on 8 August 1946, seven decades later the Convair B-36 remains the largest bomber in the world. The requirements for the aircraft that became the B-36 were born out of concern about the German advances in Europe. The US Army Air Corps issued a requirement for a very long-range heavy bomber-an aircraft capable of striking targets in Europe from bases in North America.

Due to changing needs, the aircraft was not fully developed until after the end of WWII. Despite its original role, the operational B-36 quickly became the mainstay of the cold war US Air Force strategic bomber arm. This title provides extensive photographic coverage of the aircraft in all stages of its development, production and deployment. Variants covered are the XB-36; XC-99; B-36A; B-36B; B-36C; B-36D; RB-36D; RB-36E; B-36F; RB-36F; GRB-36F; B-36H; NB-36H; RB-36H; B-36J; and YB-60. Many of the period photos are full color and are supplemented with line drawings and illustrations. 1 vol, 120 pgs 2015 US, AMPERSAND PUBLISHING

1-SS5562 WALK AROUND All Color Series: SAAB 35 Draken Sweden's most famous fighter, hailed by some as a 'fighter pilot's dream', was developed and built by the Saab company between 1955 and 1974. Designed with the Cold War situation in mind, the Draken was specially tailored to Sweden's particular needs. Indeed a number of versions of the aircraft were developed in order to undertake a wide range of tasks. The J 35A, J 35B, J 35D, J 35F and J 35J were fighter versions, with the J 35J staying in service with the Flygvapnet (Swedish Air Force) until 1998. The innovative tailless double-delta design of the Draken proved amazingly successful and ushered in a whole line of more sophisticated successors. The aircraft was exported to Finland, Denmark, and Austria, where the last J 35D was retired in 2005. 1 vol, 0 pgs 2010 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10229 Carey, Alan F3D SKYNIGHT In Action The U.S. Navy's first all-weather jet fighter, the Douglas F3D Skyknight, traces its origins to 1945, when the Navy began studies for a jet-powered, carrier-based night fighter. Ready for service when war broke out in Korea in 1950, the Skyknight, also known as Willy the Whale, proved its worth in the capable hands of pilots and radar operators with Marine Night Fighter Squadron VMF(N)-513. The F3D scored the highest number of aerial victories for an all-weather jet fighter in that conflict. Later, in the late 1950s and 1960s, Douglas Aircraft, in conjunction with the Navy and Marine Corps, modified a number of the Skyknights to perform a variety of tasks. This book chronicles the development and operational history of the Navy fighter from conception to duty in the Korean War, to service as a night interceptor in Vietnam, where it was an ECM/ELINT platform, jamming North Vietnamese missile and anti-aircraft sites. The volume is packed with never before published color and b/w photographs covering the entire operational life of the F3D-1/2, F3D-2B, F3D-1/2M, F3D-2T2, and the EF-10B variants. 1-SS10205 Dann, Richard P-40 WARHAWK IN ACTION The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, a US single-engine, single-seat, all-metal fighter and ground-attack aircraft, first took to the air in 1939. In service throughout World War II and used by most Allied powers during the war, the P-40 was the third most-produced American pursuit plane. A total of 13,738 of the aircraft were produced by the time output ceased in November of 1944.

The P-40 first saw combat with British Commonwealth forces in June 1941, but it was in the Pacific that the aircraft became an icon. Decorated with menacing shark mouths, P-40s served as workhorse fighters of the American Volunteer Group - better known as the 'Flying Tigers' -- in China.

The P-40 was the first Allied fighter to be supplied to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease for use against the Germans. After Pearl Harbor, the US Army Air Force flew the P-40 extensively in the Mediterranean Theater and during Operation Torch and the subsequent advance northwards into Europe.

Illustrated with 168 photographs, numerous color profiles, and detailed line drawings, this volume traces the development of the various modifications of the P-40 throughout the war years and carries on with a few contemporary shots of surviving P-40s still going through their paces at airshows today. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2016 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS1224 Davis, Larry F-84 THUNDERJET IN ACTION Entering service in 1947, Republic Aviation's F-84 was the primary strike aircraft of the US Air Force during the Korean War. Thunderjets flew 86,408 missions during the conflict and took out 60 percent of the ground targets eliminated by American forces. In addition, 8 Soviet-built MiG fighters met their end thanks to F-84 pilots. Besides service in Asia, the Strategic Air Command Maintained Thunderjets from 1950 through 1957 and they also were the first aircraft adopted by the Thunderbirds demonstration team. The F-84 saw extensive service in the colors of other nations; more than half of the 7,524 F-84s were exported to NATO and many served other US allies. Thunderjets were the 1st production fighter to utilize in-flight refueling and, fitted with the Mk 7 nuclear bomb, they became the 1st nuclear-capable fighter jets. F-84F Thunderstreaks and RF-84F Thunder flash reconnaissance aircraft served well into the 1970s with both USAF Guard and NATO squadrons. After the Korean War, the F-84 took part in the Suez Crisis and the Berlin Crisis and stood alert during the first 2 decades of the Cold War. 1-SS10208 Doyle, David P-47 THUNDERBOLT in Action The P-47 Thunderbolt rose to fame during World War II, with the aircraft and its pilots and crews accumulating an impressive record against ground targets, destroying a myriad of enemy trains, trucks, armored vehicles, artillery, and aircraft on the ground. The massive fighter's accomplishments were not limited to strafing and bombing runs - indeed, many P-47 jockeys earned their ace status flying the P-47 against the aircraft of the Luftwaffe and Japan, where the Thunderbolts, aided by external fuel tanks, provided long range escort for bomber formations.

This new 88-page volume chronicles the development and use of the famed 'Jug' from its genesis in the P-35 all the way to the long-legged P-47N. Production by Republic and Curtiss is discussed, along with the numerous experimental variations that did not see production. This story is told through the detailed captions associated with the 62 vintage color images and over 150 black-and-white photographs that illustrate the text. These vintage photos are augmented by over a dozen line drawings and six color profiles. 1 vol, 88 pgs 2014 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10211 Doyle, David P-51 MUSTANG IN ACTION Its contrails twisting through the clouds, one fighter aircraft was able to escort America's heavy bombers from England to Berlin, and from Iwo Jima to Tokyo - the North American P-51 Mustang. Beyond bomber escort, this iconic Pursuit (later F- for fighter) aircraft was employed against ground targets using machine guns, rockets, and bombs - in fact one variant was specifically produced as a dive bomber, an Allied counterpart to Germany's famed Stuka.

Including derivatives, the Mustang soldiered on in the arsenal of America and her allies into the 1980s, and was responsible for downing over 5,000 enemy aircraft. This new 80-page edition of a classic book about an iconic aircraft includes over 170 photos, one-third of which are in rare vintage color. Detailed line drawings and color profiles augment the archival images to present this new look at the Mustang, from the early experimental NA-73X to the PA-48, the final military variant 1 vol, 8 pgs 2008 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10219 Doyle, David B-17 FLYING FORTRESS IN ACTION The B-17 Flying Fortress dropped more bombs than any other US aircraft in WWII and is arguably the iconic bomber of that epic conflict. Delivers a visual overview of the aircraft's development and use. During the 10 years in which it was produced, a total of 12,731 of the B-17 heavy bombers rolled off the assembly lines of Boeing. Douglas Aircraft, and Lockheed's subsidiary Vega.

First flown in 1935, the aircraft was repeatedly modified, upgraded, and perfected in response to combat experience. Also highlights the roles played by individual aircraft and their crews, such as the 'Memphis Belle', which completed 25 missions over enemy territory: 'Stage Door Canteen', christened by Winston Churchill's daughter; and 'All American', which demonstrated the incredible toughness of the Flying Fortress by returning safely to base despite having its tail nearly sheared off by a Messerschmitt. An unmatched, lavishly illustrated account of one of the greatest warplanes of all time, a must have!. Illustrated with 200 vintage photographs, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2010 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10221 Doyle, David B-25 MITCHELL In Action The North American B-25 Mitchell was one of the premier U.S. warplanes of World War II. It gained immortality early in the United States' involvement in the war when a small group of B-25Bs under Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle took off from the deck of the USS Hornet and executed a surprise attack on military targets on the Japanese island of Honshu. Subsequently, Mitchells would see service in every U.S. theater of war, doing duty as a tactical bombers, coastal patrol aircraft, photo-reconnaissance and photo-mapping planes, and, when fitted with additional guns and rockets, as a superb ground- or shipping-attack platforms. The

1-SS10222 Doyle, David P-38 LIGHTNING: In Action Traces the development and combat history of the twin-engine, twin-boom, Lockheed P-38 Lightning from the first flight of the XP-38 in January 1939 through a succession of models, ending with the electronic-laden, two-seat P-38M.

Created on the drawing boards of two of America's most notable aircraft designers - Hall Hibbard and Clarence 'Kelly' Johnson - the P-38 Lightning was the only US pursuit plane to remain in continuous production throughout WWII. In the Southwestern Pacific, the P-38 served as the U.S.Army Air Force's primary long-range fighter prior to the arrival of the P-51D Mustang. Top American air aces and Medal-of-Honor winners Richard Bong and Thomas McGuire both flew Lightnings, and it was a P-38 that brought down Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's plane in April 1943.

The Lightning saw service in Europe too, and it was after flying a P-38 to assess the progress of the Normandy Invasion in 1944, that US Lt. Gen. Jimmy Doolittle referred to the Lightning as 'the sweetest-flying plane in the sky'. Illustrated with more than 150 period photographs, a third of them rare original color photos, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings. 1 vol, 88 pgs 2017 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10232 Doyle, David PBY CATALINA IN ACTION The iconic PBY Catalina was not only the work horse of the U.S. Navy's patrol bomber units during World War II, but also served admirably with the Royal Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, and others. Airmen aboard British PBYs were the first to spot the German battleship Bismarck when it broke out into the North Atlantic in May 1941, and U.S. Navy PBY crewmen were the first to observe the Japanese fleet as it stole towards Midway Islands in June 1942.

In addition to keeping a watchful eye out for enemy activities, Catalina crews also rescued countless downed airmen as well as sailors from stricken ships. Through daring bomb and depth-charge attacks on enemy vessels, Catalina airmen also contributed directly to the defeat of the Axis powers in combat. This all-new 80-page volume from Squadron tells the story of the Catalina through over 200 vintage photos, over 30 of which are in color, as well as eight color profiles and numerous detailed line drawings.Illustrated with more than 210 photographs. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2013 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10234 Doyle, David P-39 AIRCOBRA IN ACTION While the Bell P-39 is often thought of as a premier fighter in the hands of Soviet pilots, it is also well-remembered as an airplane that was almost a great fighter. So great was the Soviet success with the P-39, some forget that the aircraft also served well for the British, Free French, and the United States, on whom this volume focuses.

Created in response to the US Army Air Corps Circular Proposal X-609, issued in February 1937, Bell Aircraft's P-39 boasted an innovative layout. The engine was positioned behind the pilot with a long shaft connecting it to the propeller. Lack of a turbo-supercharger and limited room for on-board fuel tanks made the aircraft ill-suited to high-altitude combat, and as a result many of the P-39s were shipped off to the Soviet Union, where relatively low speeds and low altitudes were characteristic of air combat.

Soviet pilots appreciated the P-39's armament, particularly its 37mm nose cannon. Despite its high-altitude limitations, American combat forces made good use of the P-39 in the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters, where in lower-altitude engagements, the aircraft held its own against Zeros and other enemy planes. Illustrated with 170 photos, detailed line drawings, and more than a dozen color profiles. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2015 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10237 Doyle, David F-4 PHANTOM II With a top speed of Mach 2.2 and the ability to carry more than 18,000 pounds of weapons on nine external hard-points, the tandem-seat McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was a large fighter-bomber that served as a major component of US military air power from its introduction in 1960 to its retirement from US combat squadrons in 1995.

Like other interceptors of its era, the Phantom was initially designed without an internal cannon, being armed with air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and bombs of various types. Later Phantoms were fitted with the M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. Technological innovations featured on the F-4 were the use of an advanced pulse-Doppler radar and extensive use of titanium in its airframe.

The F-4 saw major action during the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s serving as the principal air superiority fighter for both the Navy and Air Force. Later in the conflict it took on important ground attack and aerial reconnaissance tasks as well. The Phantom was still in service during the Gulf War of 1990-1991 where it performed reconnaissance and suppressed enemy air defenses. Produced from 1958 to 1981 the Phantom also served in the armed forces of 11 other countries. At the hands of the Israelis it saw considerable action in Arab-Israeli wars and it was employed by the Iranians during their war against Iraq in the 1980s.

This 88-page volume, which is packed with 211 photographs, covers the design and development of the Phantom, beginning in response to the need for a carrier-based Navy interceptor in the mid-1950s, and tracing innovations and changes introduced to the aircraft during its long career. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2015 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10239 Doyle, David B-58 HUSTLER IN ACTION Sleek, sporting a delta wing, four big engines, and an external payload, the Convair B-58 was the first operational bomber capable of Mach 2. In service for only a decade, the supersonic bomber was dubbed the Hustler - a tribute to its impressive performance. The effort that resulted in the B-58, which saw its heyday in the 1960s, began back in February 1949 the Air Research and Development Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base initiated the second Generalized Bomber Study (GEBO II). While a number of manufacturers responded, Convair's design, which drew heavily on that firm's previous delta-wing fighter stylings, was favored.

During its career, the B-58 equipped two Strategic Air Command (SAC) bomb wings. The first of these, the 43d Bomb Wing, was based from 1960 into 1964 at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas, adjacent to the factory where the B-58s were built, then moved in 1964 to Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas, where it remained until the Hustler's retirement in 1970. The second unit was the 305th Bomb Wing, based at Bunker Hill Air Force Base (later known as Grissom AFB), Indiana from 1961 through 1970. While the initial operational use of the B-58 was beset with delays, and in fact at one time SAC outright opposed the aircraft, as the decade of the 1960s began the B-58 brought SAC much desired prestige as it set a successive number of records involving speed and altitude. Among these were the 1961 Thompson Trophy, the Mackay Trophy, the Harmon Trophy, and the Bleriot Trophy.

Despite its impressive performance, the B-58 was not without shortcomings. For one thing, its 1,740-mile unrefueled range was relatively modest. For another, the Soviets developed the SA-2 Guideline surface-to-air missile that could strike the Hustler at its 63,400 foot ceiling. Finally, the operational cost of the bomber was extremely high. Accordingly, in 1965, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered the B-58 phased out by 1974. Then, as the Nixon Administration made one last attempt to bring the Vietnam War to a successful end, Defense Secretary Melvin Laird advanced this phase-out to Fiscal Year 1970 to cut defense expenditures. Accordingly, the aircraft were, except for a few display specimens, shuttled off to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, where they lingered in storage until 1977, at which time they were sold for scrap to Southwestern Alloys. 1-SS10241 Doyle, David THE REPUBLIC F-105: In Action The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was the largest single-seat, single engine combat aircraft to enter production, was conceived as supersonic, low altitude fighter-bomber capable of delivering a heavy nuclear payload. While never used as intended, the Thunderchief did see extensive combat.

The F-105 carried the brunt of the U.S. bombing campaign during the early part of the US involvement in Vietnam by completing more than 20,000 sorties. While serviced and flown by brave and competent men, the extremely sophisticated Mach 2-capable F-105, or 'Thud' as the type was nicknamed, was ill suited for repetitive missions in humid Southeast Asia.

Maintenance requirements exceeded 100 man-hours labor per flight hour. Further, combat losses rose to almost half of the 833-unit production total. Ultimately, the F-105 was withdrawn from the theater. Features development, production and deployment of the seven Thunderchief models with nearly 200 vintage photos, more than half are in original color, augmented with a dozen line drawings and eight color profiles. 1 vol, 0 pgs 2016 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10244 Doyle, David F-104 STARFIGHTER: In Action The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter first flew in 1954. Starfighters then broke the world altitude record in May 1958 and the world air-speed record nine days later. It was the first aircraft to hold both records simultaneously. Many of the Starfighter's records stand today. With a powerful XJ79 engine and futuristic design by famed Lockheed engineer Clarence 'Kelly' Johnson and his team, a YF-104A passed Mach 2 in 1956. The F-104 was born from combat against Communist MiG-15 jet aircraft during the Korean War.

Known as a 'missile with a man in it', Starfighters trained astronauts such as Chuck Yeager on the edge of space, fought over Vietnam, and were lethal Cold War interceptors capable of firing air-to-air nuclear missiles.

During its 50-year career, it was used by no less than 15 nations from Jordan to Taiwan. Italy finally retired its fleet in 2005. It is poised to be reborn as a civilian satellite-launcher in 2018. Through more than 160 vintage photos - many in original color - numerous line drawings, and new color profiles, this new volume chronicles the remarkable military career of this aircraft. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2016 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10246 Doyle, David A-1 SKYRAIDER: In Action Originally designated AD and later A-1, the 1944-designed Skyraider was conceived and bought by the US Navy as a carrier-borne attack aircraft, and saw combat as such in Korea and Vietnam. During the latter of those conflicts, the US Air Force obtained and used Navy-surplus Skyraiders, as did the South Vietnamese air force. Other nations continued to fly the venerable Skyraider into the 1980s.

Known alternately as the 'flying dump truck,' a testament to its payload capacity; and 'SPAD,' an homage to its massive radial engine and anachronistic propeller in an age of jet aircraft, the rugged Skyraider endeared itself to both air and ground crews.

1-SS10230 Edward, Brad S-3 VIKING in Action The Lockheed S-3 Viking was developed in the late 1960s to serve as a dedicated carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft. Over the years, it evolved into an outstanding surveillance and anti-surface platform, effective not only against submarines but also large and small surface ships. As its nearly 35-year career came to an end in 2009, the Viking also took on the carrier air wing organic tanking requirements, retiring with over half of its service life remaining. A total of 187 aircraft were built and served in 16 United States Navy squadrons. The Viking and its main variant, the highly-classified ES-3A Shadow electronic surveillance aircraft, played a key role in the Cold War and in the conflicts of the 1990s.

The book is one of the few publications to tell the Viking story and is packed with photos and detailed line drawings, all depicting the aircraft's weapons, paint schemes, sensors and interior. It also provides an overview of some of the more significant variants that were studied, but never fully pursued, such as the Carrier On-Board Delivery (COD) and dedicated (KS) refueling variants. It also discusses the aircraft's role in Operation Desert Storm and how the lessons learned from that conflict impacted the Vikings' mission during the latter part of the 1990s and early 2000s. 1-SS10250 Mackay DH.98 MOSQUITO: In Action Known as the 'Wooden Wonder,' the De Havilland Mosquito was constructed almost entirely of wood and, when it entered production in 1941, was one of the fastest aircraft in the world. The Mosquito made its debut in its first widespread role as a fast, high-altitude photo reconnaissance (PR) aircraft, a job it continued to perform until the end of WWII. American General 'Hap' Arnold requested and received a number of Mosquitos for use by the US Army Air Forces.

Meanwhile, the versatility of the Mosquito led the Light Night Strike Force (LNSF) to begin employing the wooden craft alongside heavy bombers for raids over the Reich. Mosquitos dropped 4,000-pound 'Cookie' bombs in lightning raids inside the German homeland, in a de-facto pay back for the German Blitz, and Mosquito Fighter Bombers (FB) carried out strikes on German security points and U-Boats.

In addition to operations over Nazi-occupied Europe. Meanwhile, British RAF and Australian RAAF crews took the multi-role Mosquito into combat against the Japanese in the South East Asian theatre. 1-SS25070 Mackay, Ron HEINKEL HE-111 Walk Around The Heinkel 111 saw service on all Germany's military fronts in the European Theater of World War II. The He 111 entered the war as a medium bomber, supporting Wehrmacht ground campaigns. After the tide in the conflict had turned against the Reich, and air superiority had been achieved by the Soviet Union and the western Allies, the Heinkel 111 was largely relegated to transport functions. This iconic warplane had its origins as a cutting-edge civil airliner in the mid-1930s. But war was looming and before long it was adapted for use as a bomber.

The first mass-produced versions, the He 111-E and He 111-F, served in the Condor Legion with Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War, paving the way to further military engagement once World War II broke out. Although produced in large numbers and exported to many countries before and during the war, few examples of the He 111 survive today. This walk around features detailed photographic images of the He 111-P1 restored and preserved in Norway, and the He 111-H20 on display in the RAF museum in Britain. Profusely illustrated with 200 stunning color photographs, this 80-page volume examines the nuances of the external features and explores the inner workings of the B-25D model, the scarce hard-hitting, cannon-armed B-25H, and also the most abundantly-produced Mitchell, the B-25J.

Enhancing the color photographs, taken both on the ground and in the air, four vintage black-and-white images and 14 line drawings further illustrate details, while five color renderings of aircraft and markings provide a glimpse at the nature of the crews. 1-SS36003 Mutza, Wayne AEROSCOUTS IN VIETNAM: Combat Chronicles During the late 1950s and early 1960s, US Army planners sought to increase the Army's helicopter force. The Army developed new tactical doctrine using helicopters - the airmobile concept - which was based largely on air cavalry units. Such units were descendants of the US Cavalry, which had operated as light, horse-mounted infantry.

Air cavalry troopers were, in essence, horse soldiers, and helicopters were their steed. True to their proud and colorful heritage, the Air Cavalry not only employed tactics used by their forefathers of the Indian wars, they embraced their culture as they deployed in the grueling conflict in Indochina.

Packed with more than 30 action packed, often hair raising first-hand accounts of helicopter scout combat in Vietnam, this latest addition takes you into the thick of the action. Besides being exciting reading, these personal recollections by dozens of the fighters themselves provide invaluable, primary source historical coverage of one of America's epic conflicts as experienced by front-line helicopter scouts. 1-SS10233 Neubeck, Ken U.S. ECM AIRCRAFT IN ACTION The purpose of Electronic countermeasures (ECM) is to jam, spoof, trick, or otherwise fool an enemy about the location or capabilities of armed combat units. While the United States employs ECM on the land, air and sea, modern military aircraft are the primary platform in the ECM battle because they can scan a larger patch of earth.

This book briefly explains the history and development of various ECM techniques with particular emphasis on US Navy, Air Force and Marine aircraft that have taken electronic countermeasures into battle from the 1950s through present. Specific aircraft included in the book are ECM variants from the 1950s, Vietnam, the Cold War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Deliberate Force (Yugoslavia), and modern aircraft including the Navy's EA-18 Growler, which is capable of jamming frequencies and eliminating surface-to-air radar sites at Mach 1.8. 1-SS25068 Neubeck, Ken F9F COUGAR WALK AROUND The first swept-wing carrier-based fighter aircraft built for the US Navy, the F9F Cougar marked a major leap forward in the area of naval aircraft design from its predecessor, the straight-wing Grumman F9F Panther. The prototype of the first version of the Cougar, the F9F-6, first took to the air in September of 1951, just six months after contract award. There were several different models of the Cougar, reflecting its varied uses as well as the general development of the aircraft. The F9F-6 was followed by the F9F-7 and F9F-8. In addition there were also two reconnaissance models - the F9F-6P and the F9F-8P - as well as a two-seater trainer version, the F9F-8T.

The contemporary photographs in this volume illustrate in detail the differences between the various Cougar models, making use of over a dozen display aircraft located in museums across the United States as well as one Cougar on display in Argentina. Grounded in solid historical research, the book also features historical images from the photo archives of both the US Navy and Grumman, and also includes rare photos of F9F Cougar in its final days, serving as a target drone for later generations of fighters. 1-SS5564 Neubeck. Ken WALK AROUND All Color Series: F-102 Delta Dagger The Convair F-102A Delta Dagger was developed for the US Air Force as a supersonic interceptor at the onset of the Cold War. It featured a 60 degree swept delta wing to lessen drag co-efficient and yield stability at very high altitudes. True to its design, the F-102A made more than 1,000 intercepts of Soviet bombers in defense of Western airspace. Within the US, 22 Air National Guard squadrons were equipped with the Dagger from 1960 until its retirement in 1976. The 102 was also deployed to Vietnam during the war in Indochina, initially to protect bases from North Vietnamese aircraft. Later it flew fighter patrols, escorted B-52s and was used offensively to attack ground installations. Exported to NATO allies Greece and Turkey, the Turks flew the F-102A during their invasion of Cyprus in 1974. After retirement in the US, 152 of the planes were converted to high-speed unmanned drones for use as test targets for newer fighters. In 1953, McDonnell tasked one of his engineer teams with modernizing the F3H Demon. In July 1959, the F4H-1 was officially christened Phantom II as a tribute to the McDonnell FH-1, the first American jet plane designed in 1953 and intended for carrier-borne from the outset.

Designed originally as a carrier-borne interceptor armed only with missiles, its beginnings were so promising that the USAF adopted it as a tactical fighter ands was quickly followed by an impressive number of other air forces around the world which explains why certain examples are still in service today.

1-SS25055 Putnikov, Mikhail SAAB 37 VIGGEN Walk Around For the 30 years the Saab 37 Viggen thundered over Sweden, a resolute deterrent against any potential aggression. Named for the thunderclap that resounded when the god Thor banged his hammer, and developed to replace the Saab 32 Lansen as a strike aircraft and Saab 35 Draken as a fighter, Viggen was designed as a multirole combat aircraft capable of perfuming fighter, strike, and reconnaissance duties. Saab adopted a novel and extremely advanced aerodynamic configuration of a main delta wing combined with delta-shaped foreplanes.

Viggen became the first canard-equipped military aircraft to enter production since aviation's 'stick-and-string' days. Viggen easily met the strict Swedish Air Force specification of combat operations from 500-meter runways and public roads -- a performance standard that few other attack jets in the world could equal.

Significantly, the Viggen was the first aircraft to be equipped with both afterburner and reverse trust. Continually upgraded during its career, the Viggen produced a number of variants, including a two-seater trainer as well as photo-reconnaissance, ground-attack, and all-weather interceptor versions, which came to an end with the last Viggen flight in Swedish military service in June 2007.

This volume contains photos published here for the first time, as well as detailed drawings based on original Saab technical manuals. Outstanding among the few publications in the world devoted to Saab 37, this book will be of interest to modelers and aircraft enthusiasts alike. 1-SS25043 Stapfer, Hand-Heiri Messerschmitt Bf 109 G Walk Around Commonly known as the 'Gustav' because of the G suffix in its name, The Bf 109 G began rolling off assembly lines in February 1942 and remained in production until the end of World War II. The Bf 109 G was mainly distinguished from its predecessor by the fact that it incorporated the Daimler Benz DB 605 A engine, a powerplant with a takeoff rating of 1,475 h.p. - 125 h.p. more than the DB 601 E engine in the Bf 109 F-4. Production of the Bf 109 G was also undertaken by Germany's Allies, including Romania and Hungary.

No reliable manufacturing statistics survive but it is estimated that a massive 23,000 Gustavs were built by the end of the war. Lavishly illustrated with wartime photos as well as modern museum shots, this volume recounts in detail the stories of the numerous versions of the versatile Gustav, including the G-1 and G-5 with their pressurized cabins; the prolific G-2 and G-4, which saw extensive service on the Eastern Front and in North Africa; the G-6, which was built in greater numbers than any other Gustav; the short-range reconnaissance G-8, and others.

Particular attention is devoted to Gustav aircraft flown by Germany's allies during the war - wartime photos of Croatian, Finnish, Hungarian, Italian, Romanian, Slovak, and Slovenian pilots and their aircraft fill the book, highlighting a facet of the Axis war effort often overlooked by historians. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs, detailed color profiles and line drawings. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2014 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10210 Stapfer, Hans-Henri B-26 MARAUDER IN ACTION Updated and packed with 20 new pages since Squadron's last edition.

The B-26, nicknamed Flak Bait, was the only American bomber to accomplish more than 200 missions during World War II. In addition, Martin's medium bomber had a loss rate of less than 1% - the lowest loss rate of any American bomber operated during the war. Over 60% of the Marauders that started bombing operations from English bases during the summer of 1943 were still operational a year later. Among B-17 and B-24 units, this figure was less than 2%.

On the other hand, the B-26 acquired quite a reputation as a widow maker, a reputation that was never fully corrected during its operational career and that was the main reason that most B-26s were scrapped shortly after the end of hostilities.

A total of 129,943 Marauder sorties over Europe were recorded by the USAAF, this at the cost of 911 B-26s lost in combat. The Marauders belonging to the 9th and 12th Air Force dropped a total of 169,382 tons of bombs, mainly on tactical targets, such as bridges, enemy strong points, and marshaling yards, but also on V1 flying bomb sites in Northern France. Between November 1940 and March 1945, a total of 5,266 B-26s were built.

Many senior pilots of the 22nd Bomb Group in Australia - the outfit that pioneered the Marauder - recalled the B-26 as 'the best damn airplane the Air Force ever had.' Illustrated with 160 vintage photographs, color profiles, and detailed line drawings. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2015 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10243 Stapfer, Hans-Henri MESSERSCHMITT BF-109: In Action By the time the Third Reich collapsed in 1945, the Messerschmitt firm had produced some 34,000 examples of the legendary Bf 109, making it the most prolific aircraft of the era. Key to this tremendous output and to the plane's longevity was a simple design that allowed rapid production - even by unskilled Zwangsarbeiter (forced laborers) - and gave Messerschmitt an advantage over the Focke Wulf Fw 190.

The Bf 109 B-1 with a two-blade propeller was the first variant to be mass produced and the first to see combat. Jagdgruppe 88 of the Legion Condor, serving Francisco Franco's Nationalists in Spain, took delivery of its first Bf 109 B-1 aircraft in May 1937. The 39 Messerschmitts went on to play a significant role in the Spanish Civil War.

Other variants followed in short order. The Bf 109 C introduced wing armament to the craft. The Bf 109 D filled out Switzerland's air force. With their new three-bladed propeller, the 4,000 Bf 109 E that rolled out between November 1938 and March 1939 formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter fleet during the first third of WWII. The fighter got a power boost when the Bf 109 G came out with the addition of the new Daimler Benz DB 605 A engine.

The Luftwaffe began receiving the Bf 109 G in the summer of 1942 and output of the Gustav continued until January 1945. In October 1944, delivery to combat units began of the Bf 109 K-4, a version intended to bridge the gap, pending mass production of the Messerschmitt Me 262 A jet fighter. Packed with 200 vintage photos, line drawings, and color profiles, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in Action covers the entire career of the Bf 109 in all its versions and variations. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2016 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10216 Sullivan, Jim F6F HELLCAT IN ACTION Updated and packed with 20 new pages since Squadron's last edition of the F6F Hellcat In Action! During World War II, the United States Navy needed a powerful fighter to counter the Japanese Zero. After their debut in combat in early 1943, Hellcats scored more than 5,000 confirmed kills with a 19-to-1 kill ratio.

The folding-wing aircraft were capable of operating from carriers or land. Some were equipped with radar for night combat. The heavily-armed fighters could pack armament including six wing-mounted .50-caliber machine guns, 20mm cannons, wing-mounted rockets and a bomb rack. Flown by both the US Navy and Marine Corps, the aircraft was also employed by the British Fleet Air Arm during World War II. France also made use of the aircraft after the war, employing it during the Indochina conflict in the early 1950s.

In American service after World War II, remote-controlled versions of the aircraft were used to test atomic bomb blasts and as flying bombs. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs, color profiles, and detailed line drawings. 1 vol, 52 pgs 2016 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-SS10220 Sullivan, Jim F4U CORSAIR IN ACTION Now updated and expanded, Squadron's just released new edition of the F4U Corsair in Action includes 53 exciting new photographs in 16 all new, additional pages. Bringing to mind the exploits of Pappy Boyington and Tommy Blackburn the Corsair is among the most formidable U.S. fighters of World War II. The F4U maintained a kill ratio of 11:1 according to the United States Navy and went on to serve American forces in Korea, holding its own in the early years of the jet age.

The Corsair was first conceived as a high-speed, high-altitude fighter for the Navy in 1938 when Chance Vought's design team drew up plans for a fighter with a 1,800 h.p. engine and a huge 13-foot propeller. The Corsair's famous inverted gull wing design was introduced to allow prop clearance. Handling problems delayed the aircraft's deployment aboard carriers, but Marine Corps pilots quickly took to the powerful, rugged fighter and VMF-124, the first Marine squadron to fly the Corsair in combat, also produced the first Corsair air ace, Kenneth A. Walsh, by the summer of 1943. A total of 12,571 Corsairs were built between 1940 and 1952, most of them by Vought, but hundreds by Goodyear and Brewster as those companies' assembly lines had to be pressed into service to meet soaring demand for the remarkable aircraft.

Jim Sullivan's exhaustive volume surveys the history of the Corsair from its first prototype to the restored warbirds that have continued to delight air show audiences down to the present day.
