1-220170 Hooton, E.R. SPAIN IN ARMS: A Military History of the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 Examines how the Spanish Civil War conflict developed on the battlefield through the prism of eight campaigns between 1937-1939 and shows how many accounts of military operations during this conflict are based upon half-truths and propaganda. Includes 20 black and white photographs and 20 maps.

Includes the Italian campaign against the Basques on the Northern Front in 1937 was one of the most spectacular Nationalist successes of the Civil War, with 60,000 prisoners taken. Claims to be the first book to quote secret data about Italian air operations intercepted by the British -- the Italians flew 1,215 sorties and dropped 231 tons of bombs during the campaign, whilst also suffering the heaviest losses.

It also demonstrates how the Nationalists won not simply by benefitting from a cornucopia of modern arms from the Fascist powers but by using its limited resources to maximum effect, including training and overall command and the Republic's corresponding weaknesses in the same fields. The Republican Brunete and Belchite offensives of 1937 are described in detail, from the weapons they carried and the tactics they employed to the dynamic Nationalist response and reaction of the generals.

This book also explores how the extent of foreign intervention on both sides has been greatly exaggerated throughout history and provides the first accurate information on this military intervention, using British and French archives to produce a radically different but more accurate account of the battles and the factors and men who shaped them. 1 vol, 256 pgs 2019 US, CASEMATE

Originally, there was no real organization to the streams of volunteers arriving from every quarter of the world, but eventually, the units evolved into brigades.

1-COM1096 Starkweather, Adam CRUSADE AND REVOLUTION: The Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939 DELUXE EDITION Crusade and Revolution uses the traditional card-driven system, adapting it to the specific circumstances of the Spanish Civil War. Each player has his own deck of strategic cards and must make difficult choices on their use throughout the game. Each card has four possible uses, but only one of them can be chosen each time the card is played! The possibilities are:

* Recreate a Historical Event: Each card shows a historical event that affected the course of the war. They include political, military, economic and even social events, as well as the reinforcements that flowed to both sides throughout the war both from within Spain, and from foreign powers Germany, Italy and Russia.
* Conduct Operations: Each card has an operations value that is used for activating units on the game map for movement, preparing fortifications, or attacking.
*Strategic Redeployment (SR) of Troops: Each card has a Strategic Redeployment value that is used to move units great distances on the game map, or to bring units out of Reserve to shore up a threatened flank.
* Replacement Points for Reforming Your Army: Each card has a Replacement Point value which is recorded and used for repairing damaged or rebuilding destroyed units at the end of the turn.

Design uses 'small units' through Feb 1937, switches to 'large units' from March 1937 to February 1938, and then ends with the 'Decisive Phase' that begins in March 1938 and lasts until the end of the war in April 1939. During this time, the Nationalists tried to force the enemy's unconditional surrender, while the Republic fought desperately to resist and prolong the Spanish Civil War to intertwine with looming WWII.
