1-930303 STRATEGY & TACTICS # 303: WAR RETURNS TO EUROPE - Yugoslavia 1991 War Returns to Europe: Yugoslavia 1991 is a simulation of the first engagements of the Yugoslav Wars of 1991-2001. Game play begins in June 1991 when Slovenia and Croatia proclaimed independence from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and ends in early 1992.

There are two players: the Federalist and the Separatist. The Federalist player assumes the role of the commander of the People's Army of Yugoslavia (JNA), the only Federal institution still working in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. The Federalist player must fight low morale, politicos, and the Separatists to keep Yugoslavia united, or at least to retain the largest possible tract of Serb-inhabited territory. The Separatist player represents the governments of the breakaway republics of Slovenia and Croatia fighting for independence and a free market economy.

1-963021 MODERN WAR # 21: KANDAHAR: SPECIAL FORCES IN AFGHANISTAN (SOLITAIRE) Kandahar: Special Forces in Afghanistan (Solitaire) gives you command of a Special Forces team in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2013. Your lead your men on a variety of randomly generated missions; you choose your weapons and equipment, decide on how to posture your team, and plan your approach and method of extraction.

You must choose weapons and equipment that don't run the risk of quickly exposing your team, and don't cause unintended escalation. (If the US military must divert regular combat units to your area to quell enemy activity, the value of the Green Berets will be called into question by the traditionalists at the Pentagon.) Your goal is to disrupt the enemy's freedom of action in your area of operations while creating only a minimal footprint at minimal cost.

Kandahar is a solitaire game in which you assume the role of a Special Forces colonel. The system will generate missions and enemy responses to your unit's activities.

Each team counter represents about five men, while each commander and officer counter represent one man each. Each enemy combat unit represents various sizes of units, typically platoons.

Components: One 22x34-inch map and 176 counters. Each hex represents 200 meters. Each turn represents anything from hours to days, depending on the tempo of your activities. 1 vol, 84 pgs 2015 US, DECISION GAMES

1-963022 MODERN WAR # 22: New World Order New World Order is a grand tactical wargame of battles that were, or could possibly be fought, in the era since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and even into the near future. Players control actual and hypothetical combat units using a wide range of technologies and forces to gain objectives. Two scenarios are included: Kiev, covering a hypothetical Russian clash with NATO forces at the Ukrainian capital, and Ulaan Baatar, a hypothetical clash between Russian and Chinese forces at the Mongolian capital.

There are two players in each game, commanding opposing forces. Both games use a system of shared rules, and each also has its own scenario special instructions. The game pieces represent military units, supporting firepower, and Netwar operations.

This led to two battles, the first in April and the second in November. These became some of the biggest engagements of the Gulf War. The player controls Coalition forces while the game system controls the Opposition forces (the Insurgents), known in the game as OPFOR.

This game includes scenarios for both battles for Fallujah, as well as a scenario allowing you to fight the entire campaign.

1-963029 MODERN WAR # 29: Putin's War - Crisis in the Baltic Putin's War: Reclaiming the Soviet Empire in Eastern Europe is a strategic-level, two-player wargame of low-intermediate complexity that covers the campaign that could occur
if the Russian dictator decides to give up his strategy of incremental 'opaque' warfare and
instead simply try for a big win.

The game's sub-systems are crafted to present a supreme commander's-eye-view of such a war. It's therefore almost fully strategic in its perspective, with only the most pastel of operational and tactical undertones added to enhance its tone and texture in those regards. Takes two experienced players only about two hours to complete and it's adaptable for solitaire play.

1-963030 MODERN WAR #30 Enduring Freedom Operational-level solitaire simulation of the US-Coalition invasion of Afghanistan in the wake of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. The player controls the forces of the Coalition (US, NATO, and the Northern Alliance). The game system controls the opposing Islamist forces (Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and Pakistani Volunteers).

The objective of the game is for the Coalition to destroy Al Qaeda and establish the basis for a stable Afghanistan such that a new civil war will not break out later. The game covers the period of October 2001 (the initial US invasion) to March 2002 (the conclusion of Operation Anaconda).

1-963031 MODERN WAR #31 Combat Veteran Combat Veteran is a simple two-player tactical combat system that simulates the dynamics of infantry combat at the individual (man-to-man) level. This game features two particular historic scenarios as the introduction to the wider system: Firefight at the Rice Paddy Angle (Vietnam in Mekong region, 1967), and Firefight at Combat Outpost Keating (Afghanistan in the Nuristan Province, 2009). Both firefights involved about a platoon of US infantry against a numerically superior enemy force.

The US and Viet Cong game soldier game pieces represent specific, individual men of their respective units, whereas Taliban soldier game pieces represent three to six men. Each hex represents about 40 meters of actual terrain (almost half a football field from hex corner to hex corner), and the entire map area is roughly the same acreage as Hyde Park in London. Each weapon game piece represents one specific type of named weapon and its standard loadout. For example, the M60 weapon game piece represents one M60 machinegun, at least a 150 rounds of ammunition, and presumably a spare barrel (and even an asbestos glove), etc.

1-963032 MODERN WAR #32 Operation Musketeer Operation Musketeer is a wargame based on the assumption that the 1956 Anglo-French-Israeli invasion of Egypt turned into a major superpower confrontation in which the forces of the Soviet Union and United States became involved. Historically, the invasion was ended because both the USSR and USA opposed the Allied invasion. But, the assumption here is that, instead, both Moscow and Washington were drawn into the conflict and deployed combat forces to support their respective camp.

The game system emphasizes command control. Each side is composed of different contingents. Players activate their contingents through the use of Command markers. This models the historical command-control factors involved in multi-national operations during the 1950s. Players command ground and air forces, and there is the possibility of nuclear war breaking out. There are two players: the Allies (including France, Britain, Israel and the US); and the East Bloc (Egypt, USSR).

1-212670 Alberts, Carl CHOPPER DOWN!: The Story of A Mercenary Pilot in Africa After 20 years of armed conflict in Angola and political instability in coup-ridden Sierra Leone going back to 1991, private corporate financial interests became the catalyst that spawned the creation of possibly the most successful private military corporation to date: Executive Outcomes (EO). With its initial task of securing Angolan government control in the Soyo oil-producing region, prompted by private oil interests, EO subsequently became involved in the war against UNITA throughout the country.

With little more that 100 of its own combat personnel on the ground in both the wars in Angola and Sierra Leone, the outstanding success that EO achieved was in no small part due to the force-multiplying effect and support given by its helicopter and jet pilots of the Air Wing. This is the true story of the frustrations, personal sacrifices and too often the extreme risks that the aircrews took while flying in support of the ground offensives. Most of this was achieved with outdated equipment and aircraft that were seldom airworthy.

Living under harsh conditions with the ever-present threat of enemy attack, as well as great risk from their ill-disciplined allies, the contribution these aircrews made to the overall success of the war effort was extensive. Although EO costs were but a small fraction of the replacement United Nations forces, which were generally unsuccessful, international pressure to leave prematurely, led to renewed regional conflict with great loss of life. Describes the realities of 'postwar syndrome,' his subsequent failed business venture in Liberia, and his involvement in the conflict in the Ivory Coast that brought about his arrest in South Africa for mercenary-related activities. 1 vol, 352 pgs 2016 SOUTH AFRICA, 30 DEGREES SOUTH PUBLISHERS

1-207260 Balaam, Andrew BUSH WAR OPERATOR: Memoirs of the Rhodesian Light Infantry, Selous Scouts and Beyond From the searing heat of the Zambezi Valley to the freezing cold of the Chimanimani Mountains in Rhodesia, from the bars in Port St Johns in the Transkei to the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa, this is the story of one man's fight against terror, and his conscience.

Anyone living in Rhodesia during the 1960s and 1970s would have had a father, husband, brother or son called up in the defense of the war-torn, landlocked little country. A few of these brave men would have been members of the elite and secretive unit that struck terror into the hearts of the ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas infiltrating the country at that time -- the Selous Scouts. These men were highly trained and disciplined, with skills to rival the SAS, Navy Seals and the US Marines, although their dress and appearance were wildly unconventional: civilian clothing with blackened, hairy faces to resemble the very people they were fighting against.

Twice decorated -- with the Member of the Legion of Merit (MLM) and the Military Forces' Commendation (MFC) -- Andrew Balaam was a member of the Rhodesian Light Infantry and later the Selous Scouts, for a period spanning twelve years. This is his honest and insightful account of his time as a pseudo operator. His story is brutally truthful, frightening, sometimes humorous and often sad.

In later years, after Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, he was involved with a number of other former Selous Scouts in the attempted coups in the Ciskei, a South African homeland, and Lesotho, an independent nation, whose only crimes were supporting the African National Congress. Training terrorists, or as they preferred to be called, 'liberation armies', to conduct a war of terror on innocent civilians, was the very thing he had spent the last ten years in Rhodesia fighting against. This is the true, untold story of these failed attempts at governmental overthrows. 1 vol, 288 pgs 2014 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-213080 Barlow, Eeben COMPOSITE WARFARE: The Conduct of Successful Ground Force Operations in Africa Composite Warfare presents African soldiers and scholars with a true African 'Art of War'. As a continent, Africa presents her armies with a vast, dynamic, and multidimensional operating environment. It has numerous complex and diverse ethnic, religious, cultural and tribal interests and loyalties, along with many multifaceted threat-drivers coupled to varied and infrastructure-poor terrain plus vast climatic variations.

The continent is, furthermore, characterized by numerous half-won conflicts and wars fought by incorrectly structured, inadequately trained and ill-equipped armies. For many reasons, these forces have difficulty adapting to the complex, demanding and rapidly changing environments they do battle in. Similarly, the armies have difficulty in decisively defeating the various threats they face. Many of these problems stem from the fact that numerous modern-day African armies are merely clones of the armies established by their once-colonial masters, their Cold War allies or their new international allies. Many of the principles and tactics, techniques and procedures they were - and still are - being taught relate to fighting in Europe and not in Africa. Some of these concepts are not even relevant to Africa. B/w drawings & charts, color & b/w photos

This book is intended as a guide and textbook for African soldiers and scholars who wish to understand the development of hostilities, strategy, operational design, doctrine and tactics. It also illustrates the importance of nonpartisanship and the mission and role of the armed forces. Officers, NCOs and their subordinates need to, furthermore, understand their role in defending and protecting the government and the people they serve. They additionally need to know how to successfully accomplish their numerous missions with aggression, audacity, boldness, speed and surprise.

The book provides the reader with valuable information relating to conventional and unconventional maneuver. It also discusses how African armies can, with structured and balanced forces, achieve strategic, operational and tactical success. It covers the role of government along with operations related to war, operations other than war and intelligence operations and how these operations, operating in a coordinated and unified manner, can secure and strengthen a government. Composite Warfare draws on the author's experiences and lessons in Central, Southern, East, West and North Africa where he has served numerous African governments as a politico-military strategist, division commander, division adviser, battalion commander, and special operations commander. 1 vol, 576 pgs 2016 UK, HARPIA PUBLISHING

1-203760 Billingsley, Dodge FANGS OF THE LONE WOLF: Chechen Tactics in the Russian-Chechen War 1994-2009 Books on guerrilla war are seldom written from the tactical perspective and even less seldom from the guerrilla's perspective. Fangs of the Lone Wolf is an exception. These are the stories of low-level guerrilla combat as told by the survivors.

It covers fighting from the cities of Grozny and Argun to the villages of Bamut and Serzhen-yurt, and finally the hills, river valleys and mountains that make up so much of Chechnya. The author embedded with Chechen guerrilla forces and knows the conflict, country and culture. 1-963019 Bomba, Ty MODERN WAR # 19: Red Dragon Falling It was the Chinese scholar-historian Wei Yuan, writing in the mid-19th century, who first formally identified his nation's apparently inescapable cycles of 'chaos and humiliation' (quru), followed by 'rejuvenation' (fuxiang), followed by 'wealth and power' (fuqiang), and then back to quru to start again.

More recently, Queens College futurist and sometimes-CIA analyst Dr. Bruce Bueno de Mosquita wrote concerning China that he sees no factors in the present-day environment working to end or deflect that same cycle. It was the shared conclusions of those two men, working over a century-and-a-half apart, which inspired the design of this wargame modeling the military parameters and possibilities inherent in the next phase of Chinese quru - civil war.

The likely starting points for such a conflict would either be the collapse of the Chinese real estate bubble - which is already broadly predicted to be inescapable and will constitute the largest financial collapse in world history - or the growing potable water crisis (a third of the water consumed by the Chinese is undrinkable by US standards.)

Beyond those factors, or in combination with them, there's also the gender imbalance, the fossil fuel air pollution crisis, the increasingly endemic corruption, the aging population structure, the expanding rural-urban economic gap, as well as the general collapse of ideology and the resultant moral lapse throughout the populace. One, some, or all of these factors may eventually lead to a crisis in China, as so often occurs in history, resulting in a civil war.

Each turn equals two months, probably starting sometime late in this decade or early in the next. The game is designed for two players, but it is adaptable for solitaire. Each hexagon represents 80 miles from side to opposite side. Units of maneuver are brigades, divisions and group armies and air corps (in the form of 176 large-size NATO-style counters).

1-963020 Bomba, Ty MODERN WAR # 20: Race to Baghdad Race to Baghdad: 2003 is a solitaire game in which the player takes command of Central Command Forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Your goal is to defeat Saddam Hussein's forces in such a manner as to prevent a post-campaign insurgency from breaking out.

The system plays the Iraqis. You will have to deal with a variety of situations, such as: battling Republican Guard divisions, safeguarding your lines of supply, sandstorms, etc., all the while keeping up the momentum in your drive on Baghdad.

The game has two levels: Standard Rules, which give a quick-play game, and the Optional Rules, which add more realism at the expense of increased complexity.

While this is a solitaire game, more than one can play as a team, making decisions by consensus, or with different players managing operations along each vector of Advance.

1-213790 Bridgland, Fred THE WAR FOR AFRICA: Twelve Months that Transformed a Continent This classic account of a Cold War struggle and its momentous consequences for the participants and across the continent, is released in a new edition with a new preface and epilogue.

The story of the Cuban-South African war in Angola in 1987-88 through the eyes of the South Africans who fought in it. Beginning as a power struggle between two former liberation movements, the MPLA and UNITA, the Angolan Civil War became a Cold War struggle with involvement from the Soviet Union, Cuba, South Africa and the USA.

This book examines the height of the Cuban-South African fighting in Angola in 1987-88, when 3,000 South African soldiers and about 8,000 UNITA guerrilla fighters fought in alliance against the Cubans and the armed forces of the Marxist MPLA government, a force of over 50,000 men. Bridgland pieced together the course of the war, fought in one of the world's most remote and wild terrain, by interviewing the South Africans who fought it, and many of their accounts are woven into the narrative. 1 vol, 0 pgs 2017 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-200090 Cann, John P. COUNTERINSURGENCY IN AFRICA: The Portuguese Way of War 1961-74 Portugal was the first colonial power to arrive in Africa and the last to leave. As other European states were granting independence to their African possessions, Portugal chose to stay and fight despite the small odds of success. That it did so successfully for thirteen years across the three fronts of Angola, Guine, and Mozambique remains a remarkable achievement, particularly for a nation of such modest means.

The Portugese approach to the conflict was distinct in that it sought to combine the two-pronged national strategy of containing the cost of the war and of spreading the burden to the colonies, with the solution on the battlefield. Even today Portugal's systematic and logical approach to its insurgency challenge holds valuable lessons for any nation forced to wage a small war on the cheap.

John P. Cann's study is both wide-ranging and comprehensive, providing a description and analysis of Portuguese counterinsurgency, including aspects such as intelligence and mobility, besides discussing social and logistical operations. Whilst discussing operations that took place during the 1960s and 1970s this study remains very relevant to present-day counterinsurgency operations. 1 vol, 240 pgs 2012 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-208140 Cann, John P. FLIGHT PLAN AFRICA: Portuguese Airpower in Counterinsurgency, 1961-1974 Following the 1952 reorganization of the Portuguese Air Force from the army and naval air arms, Portugal now had a dedicated organization for aviation that would bring it into line with its new NATO commitment. As it developed and trained for its NATO role, it was suddenly confronted in 1961 with fighting insurgencies in all three of its African possessions. This development forced it to acquire an entirely new and separate air force, the African air force, to address this emerging danger.

This is the story of just how Portuguese leadership anticipated and dealt with this threat, and how it assembled an air force from scratch to meet it. The aircraft available at the time were largely castoffs from the larger, richer, and more sophisticated air forces of its NATO partners and not designed for counterinsurgency. Yet Portugal adapted them to the task and effectively crafted the appropriate strategies and tactics for their successful employment.

1-205050 Clement, Jeffrey D THE LIEUTENANT DON'T KNOW: One Marine's Story of Warfare and Combat Logistics in Afghanistan In our wars since 2001 the term 'front line' has long since lost its meaning and the true combats have waged throughout the countries we've invaded, especially along the supply routes. Our opponents have not been able to stand with conventional forces, but instead attack inside our lines, their presence everywhere, if not always discernible. Into this mix of behind-the-lines attacks, combat logistics have played a larger role than ever.

In Afghanistan particularly, the long convoy routes have been vulnerable to the same kind of surprise attacks suffered by the Soviets in past decades. Overland supply was needed as the quick panacea of airpower was often overtaxed.

When he joined the Marines, Jeff Clement was not a high-speed, top-secret recon guy. A logistician instead, he led combat convoys across treacherous terrain in southern Afghanistan through frequent enemy attacks in order to resupply US and British positions. As such he and his vehicles were a constant target of the resistance, and each movement was a travail, often accompanied by thundering blasts as the insurgents paved their way with IEDs. As a Marine Corps lieutenant, he deployed to Afghanistan twice, and always found a learning curve, as men previously on the ground were more savvy, and the insurgents, there for the duration, were savvier still. 1 vol, 264 pgs 2014 US, CASEMATE

1-969003 Davies, Peter 003 NORTH AMERICAN X-15 The revolutionary X-15 remains the fastest manned aircraft ever to fly. Built in the two decades following World War II, it was the most successful of the high-speed X-planes. The only recently broken 'sound barrier' was smashed completely by the X-15, which could hit Mach 6.7 and soar to altitudes above 350,000 feet, beyond the edge of space. Several pilots qualified as astronauts by flying above 50 miles altitude in the X-15, including Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon.

The three X-15s made 199 flights, testing new technologies and techniques which greatly eased America's entry into manned space travel, and made the Apollo missions and Space Shuttle viable propositions. With historical photographs and stunning digital artwork, this is the story of arguably the greatest of the X-Planes. 1 vol, 88 pgs 2016 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-204200 De La Pedraja, Rene WARS OF LATIN AMERICA 1982-2013: The Path to Peace This book, continuing the narrative begun by the author in two preceding volumes, provides a clear description of military combat occurring in Latin America for the years from 1982 into mid-2013. Although the text concentrates on combat operations, matters of politics, business and international relations appear as necessary to understand the wars.

The author has uncovered many previously unknown sources to provide new information never published before. The book traces the many insurgencies in Latin America as well as conventional wars. Among the highlights are the chapters on the Falklands War and the US invasions of Grenada and Panama. One useful aspect of the text is an explanation of why, of the many insurgencies appearing in Latin America, only those in Cuba and Nicaragua were successful in overthrowing governments. The book also helps explain why even unsuccessful insurgencies have survived for decades, as has happened in Colombia and Peru.

1-200160 DiMarco, Louis CONCRETE HELL: Urban Warfare From Stalingrad to Iraq Throughout history cities have been at the center of warfare, from sieges to street-fighting, from peace-keeping to coups de mains. Sun Tzu admonished his readers of The Art of War that the lowest realization of warfare was to attack a fortified city. Indeed, although strategists have advised against it across the millennia, armies and generals have been forced nonetheless to attack and defend cities, and victory has required that they do it well. DiMarco provided a masterful study of the brutal realities of urban warfare, of what it means to seize and hold a city literally block by block.

1-199280 Ecker, William and Jack, Kenneth and Dobbs, Michael BLUE MOON OVER CUBA: Aerial Reconnaissance during the Cuban Missile Crisis Most books on the Cuban Missile Crisis tell the story using the memoirs of those who advised President Kennedy as he struggled to avoid World War III. This book is the only known personal account of the lead photographic reconnaissance squadron's scouting dangerous low-level operations, flying the supersonic RF-8A Crusader, during the classified Operation Blue Moon.

Captain Ecker was the commanding officer of US Navy Light Photographic Squadron 62 (VFP-62, otherwise known as Fightin' Photo) during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a team created for reconnaissance and aerial photography, and consulted on the movie Thirteen Days, which included dramatic scenes of his first mission over Cuba on October 23, 1962. 1-207980 Gilbert, Oscar MARINE CORPS TANK BATTLES: In the Middle East In the aftermath of Vietnam a new generation of Marines was determined to wage a smarter kind of war. The tank, the very symbol of power and violence, would play a key role in a new concept of mobile warfare, not seen since the dashes of World War II. The emphasis would be not on brutal battles of attrition, but on paralyzing the enemy by rapid maneuver and overwhelming but judicious use of firepower.

Yet in two wars with Iraq, the tankers, as well as the crews of the new Light Armored Vehicles, quickly found themselves in a familiar role battering through some of the strongest defenses in the world by frontal assault and fighting their way through towns and cities.

In America's longest continual conflict, armored Marines became entangled in further guerilla war, this time amid the broiling deserts, ancient cities, and rich farmlands of Iraq, and in the high, bleak wastes of Afghanistan. It was a familiar kind of war against a fanatical foe who brutalized civilians, planted sophisticated roadside bombs, and seized control of entire cities.

It has been a maddening war of clearing roads, escorting convoys, endless sweep operations to locate and destroy insurgent strongholds, protecting voting sites for free elections, and recapturing and rebuilding urban centers. It's been a war in which the tanks repeatedly provided the outnumbered infantry with precise and decisive firepower. The tankers even added a new trick to their repertoire -- long-range surveillance.

1-COM1020 Gorowski, John BREAKING THE CHAINS: Hypothetical Modern Wargame 2021: South China Sea A hypothetical future military conflict over territorial disputes in the South China and East China Seas around the year 2021. After decades of patient diplomacy, Beijing's new navy could offer military options for finally asserting sovereignty over prizes within the First Island Chain - that string of islands which runs from the Ryukus south through Taiwan, the Philippines and then curls back to the mainland via Malaysia.

BtC presumes that China comes to blows with a Southeast Asian country in a conflict that could expand to possibly include: Australia, India, Japan, the US, and other Southeast Asian nations. However, beyond China and one South East Asian nation, the exact composition of opposing coalitions is not predetermined but rather a function of the decisions players make as the game unfolds.

Includes two reference cards, rules, dice, and 440 5/8-inch counters, and 22x34-inch map where each hex spans about 70 nautical miles (80 land miles) and each turn represents one day of real time. Players alternate maneuvering air, ground, and naval units for up to 14 nations to resolve battles with a universal 'strike' mechanism that applies across all types of combat; missile defense capabilities are central to survival. Air units represent from 30-90 aircraft each, most ground units are regiments, and naval units are small groups of surface ships/submarines or individual aircraft carriers. Specialized chit play simulates black ops, cyber warfare, and various political developments.

Naval operations which dominate play are based on a roll-to-evade model rather than search-to-find model. That means, owing to a battle space awash in electromagnetic emissions, enemy positions - except for motionless submarines - are assumed to be known unless a last-minute dice roll determines a potential target has evaded detection. So there is no hidden movement to stifle solitaire play and the hidden placement of submarines can be forgone. Finally, the special chits that govern black ops can be played at random to further enable solo game play.

Complexity: 7 out of 10
Solitaire Suitability: 7 out of 10
Time Scale: Daily Turns subdivided into 4-hour cycles
Map Scale: 70 nautical miles per hex
Unit Scale: Individual aircraft carriers, pairs or triplets of smaller ships/submarines; Air wings (25-75 aircraft); Land battalions, regiments and divisions

1-198360 Grau, Lester W and Billingsley, Dodge OPERATION ANACONDA: America's First Major Battle in Afghanistan Drawing upon previously unavailable or neglected sources, Lester Grau and Dodge Billingsley give us the most complete and accurate account of this thirteen-day firefight waged in mountainous terrain nearly two miles above sea level. They describe how allied troops fought a fierce and well-entrenched enemy to a standstill, close to an old Soviet battlefield, and then drove them completely out of Afghanistan.

Grau and Billingsley's account also highlights problems encountered in Anaconda and the lessons we should learn from their in-depth study. The Army and Air Force operated under conflicting views regarding the appropriate application of Close Air Support, and airpower both crippled and aided the overall effort. In addition, severe shortages of transport, attack helicopters, and artillery hampered the effort, while the acquisition and timely sharing of intelligence barely occurred at all and coalition relations frayed under the intense pressures of combat.

As an added bonus, the authors also include with the book a documentary on DVD that features interviews with soldiers who fought in Anaconda, provides additional information concerning major phases of the battle, and presents insightful commentary by Grau and by Billingsley, who was on the ground with US forces for the operation. Providing the richest description and critique of all the forces involved-including those that fought on the enemy side-the combined book-and-DVD surpasses all previous accounts of this landmark engagement and is an essential volume in the literature on our war in Afghanistan. 1-213571 Hooton, E.R., Tom Cooper, Farzin Nadimi THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR VOLUME 1: The Battle For Khuzestan, September 1980-May 1982 The Iran-Iraq War was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century and accidentally created the current nightmare of Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. Includes 120 photos, 15 artworks, five maps, and four diagrams.

Uses materials obtained from US intelligence circles and British governmental archives. It provides a unique insight into a war which began through miscalculation and rapidly escalated into the longest conventional conflict in the post-Second World War era.

The first volume looks at the background and describes in detail how Saddam Hussein decided to invade, but hamstrung, the Iraqi Army to restrict its greatest success to a narrow strip of territory in Iran's southern province of Khuzestan. This left the Iraqis unable to either advance or withdraw, and exposed them to ever greater and more successful Iranian counter-strokes which drove them out in May 1982 in the ferocious Battle of Khorramshahr. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2017 UK, HELION and COMPANY

1-213572 Hooton, E.R., Tom Cooper, Farzin Nadimi THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR VOLUME 2: Iran Strikes Back, June 1982-December 1986 The Iran-Iraq War was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century and accidentally created the current nightmare of Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. Includes 120 photos, 15 artworks, five maps, and four diagrams.

Volume 2 takes up the account after Iraq withdrew from Khuzestan and is based upon material from both sides: US intelligence data, British Government documents and secret Iraqi files. Iraq's withdrawal exposed the great southern city of Basra to Iranian attack, but it was shielded by fortifications based upon a huge antitank ditch - the so-called 'Fish Lake' - which the Iranians tried to storm in the summer of 1982.

This bloody failure left Tehran in a position where prestige prevented a withdrawal into Iran, but the armed forces lacked the resources to bring the conflict to a favorable conclusion. During the next four years, the Iranians tried to outflank the 'Fish Lake' defenses initially through the marshes in the north and finally through an attack on the Fao Peninsula, which increased national prestige, but was a strategic failure and paved the way for Iraq's massive victories in 1988. This followed a series of successful defensive battles in which the Iranians were driven back with great loss. This account describes the battles in greater detail than before and, by examining them, provides unique insights and ends many of the myths which are repeated in numerous other accounts of this conflict. 1 vol, 112 pgs 2017 UK, HELION and COMPANY

1-212240 Lai, Benjamin THE DRAGON'S TEETH: The Chinese People's Liberation Army - Its History, Traditions, and Air Sea and Land Capability in the 21st Century When Mao Zedong proclaimed The People's Republic of China in 1949, China was a poor and wrecked society after years of continuous wars. For centuries, in fact, China had been seen as a sort of plunder-zone to be invaded, and then a backwater until the late 1980s, when domestic policy brought about monumental changes. The result was that in the past quarter-century China has grown to be the second largest economy in the world, and its military has grown proportionately.

Successive decades of economic growth have transformed China-in addition to the weapons revolution during the computer age-so that by now the People's Liberation Army (PLA) has become a modern fighting force. No longer having to rely on massed infantry attacks, it now features a formidable arsenal including nuclear submarines, ICBMs, stealth fighters, and modern battle tanks. Perhaps ominously for other maritime powers, the Chinese have also focused on beyond-the-horizon missile technology, as well as anti-aircraft systems, and have also explored the possibilities of cyber-warfare.

What is today's PLA really like? What are its traditions and histories, and how is it armed and equipped? How does it recruit and train? This book describes some of the lesser known battles and wars the Chinese have undertaken, and the development of their key weapons systems. The United States, having opened the door to drone warfare, have had an attentive audience for such technologies in Beijing.

The last chapter provides thoughts on how the Chinese view matters of security. It is not yet known whether foreign powers can still enforce their territorial wills on China, but future attempts will meet an increased challenge. This book will be of interest not only to general readers but to policy-makers and militaries in the West, who may not yet realize that a new China has replaced the old. 1 vol, 320 pgs 2016 US, CASEMATE

1-192500 Lowry, Richard S. NEW DAWN: The Battles for Fallujah Fallujah. Few names conjure up as many images of blood, sacrifice, and valor as does this ancient city in Al Anbar province forty miles west of Baghdad. This sprawling concrete jungle was the scene of two major U.S. combat operations in 2004. The first was Operation Vigilant Resolve, an aborted effort that April by U.S. Marines intent on punishing the city's insurgents. The second, Operation Phantom Fury, was launched seven months later. Richard Lowry's 'New Dawn: The Battles for Fallujah' is the first comprehensive history of this fighting.

Also known as the Second Battle for Fallujah, Operation Phantom Fury was a protracted house-to-house and street-to-street combat that began on November 7 and continued unabated for seven bloody and exhausting weeks. It was the largest fight of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the heaviest urban combat since the Battle of Hue City, Vietnam in 1968. Death and redemption were found everywhere, from narrow streets to courtyards, kitchens, bedrooms, and rooftops. By the time the fighting ended, more than 1,400 insurgents were dead, compared to ninety-five Americans (and another 1,000 wounded).

Lowry (Marines in the Garden of Eden) spent years researching and writing his new campaign history. In addition to archival research, New Dawn is based upon the personal recollections of nearly 200 soldiers and Marines who participated in the battles for Fallujah, from the commanding generals who planned the operations to the privates who kicked in the doors. The result is a gripping, page-turning narrative of individual sacrifice and valor that also documents the battles for future military historians.

The struggle against a determined enemy at the crossroads of civilization is the story of American kids who grew up down the block from you only to fly halfway around the world to fight in the largest battle of the war. 'New Dawn' is about their courage, their sacrifice, and their commitment to freedom. And it is a story you will never forget.

1-963016 Miranda, Joseph MODERN WAR # 16: Visegrad: The Coming War in Eastern Europe Visegrad: The Coming War in Eastern Europe covers a hypothetical conflict between the forces of the Eastern NATO and Russia. With the US in retreat in the world, and the Russians getting overly aggressive, it could be that a resurgent Russia could make an attempt to take back its classic sphere of influence. This, factored in with the fact that Russia is the primary energy source for much of Europe, has made them overly powerful. The biggest threat to the Russian energy dominance is amazingly the country of Poland. Recent technological breakthrough in 'Fracking' has made the Polish shale resources the number one competitor to Russian energy domination. So, once again, the two nations may well be on a collision course to destiny.

The other assumption made for the background of the game is that Germany, caught in the grips of an isolationist government, and not willing to risk rocking the boat with its primary source of energy, declares Poland the aggressor and that it will be neutral in the NATO 'violation'. The US, already weakened from its own internal problems, is unable to force them to honor their commitments. The resulting chaos and confusion will delay the entry of much of the NATO forces and force Poland and its neighbors to go it alone.

The game includes one map (22x34-inch) and 176 counters.

1-963017 Miranda, Joseph MODERN WAR # 17: Dien Bien Phu Dien Bien Phu (Solitaire) is a wargame covering the decisive battle of the First Indochina War in which elite French Expeditionary Force units defended an air-land base against the communist Viet Minh. The game covers the critical period of Viet Minh assaults and French counterattacks of March to May, 1954. Historically, the Viet Minh won the battle, overrunning the base. This led to the collapse of the French position in Indochina and eventual US involvement in Vietnam.

In Dien Bien Phu, you play the French while the game system controls the Viet Minh. The objective is for the French to hold out long enough for the fortress to be relieved, or even gain a decisive victory by breaking Viet Minh morale.

While a solitaire game, Dien Bien Phu can also be played by two or more players, each taking charge of different aspects of the French defense. For example, one player can be overall commander, while others command various defensive sectors, or take charge of air and artillery.

Your duty is to lead your men on a variety of randomly generated missions (representing orders direct from high command), choose weapons and equipment that are best suited for the mission, decide on how to deploy your team, plan your approach, and a method of extraction.

However, it is not quite that simple; you must choose weapons and equipment that do not expose your team, and do not cause unintended escalation (if the US military must divert regular combat units to your area to quell enemy activity, the value of the Green Berets will be called into question by the 'traditionalists' at the Pentagon). Your goal is to disrupt the enemy's freedom of action in your area of operations with a minimal 'footprint' and minimal cost.

1-212310 Moorcraft, Paul OMAR AL-BASHIR: And Africa's Longest War President Omar al-Bashir is Africa's and arguably Arabia's most controversial leader. In power since 1989, he is the first sitting head of state to be issued with an arrest warrant, for war crimes, by International Criminal Court. He has been a central personality in Islamic and African politics, as well as a love-to-hate figure for the US in the 'war on terror'.

For military history readers, Al-Bashir is a field marshal who has fought possibly the world's longest conflict. Modern Sudan has been embroiled in war since 1955. Includes 16 pages of black and white illustrations.

No proper biography has been written on him before. Nor has there been a comprehensive military history of Sudan. The book briefly covers the military background until independence. Then it dissects the long north-south civil war until Bashir's Islamist military coup in 1989. 1-212120 Neville, Leigh MODERN SNIPERS The years since 9/11 have seen major changes in the way snipers are employed on the modern battlefield, along with incredibly rapid evolution in their weapons, equipment and training. This book covers the 14 years of near-constant warfare since the dawn of the 21st century, documenting where, when, and how snipers have been deployed; their rifles, optics and their ancillary equipment such as laser range finders; their training and tactics; and accounts of real-life operations involving sniper teams.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan reaffirmed the importance of snipers in both conventional and unconventional warfare, and this new study covers these developments in depth, as well as looking at the role of the sniper in police and counter-terrorism environments. 1 vol, 336 pgs 2016 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-211240 O'Halloran, Kevin RWANDA: Unamir 1994 / 95 In 1994 a group of Australian UN peacekeepers, made up of soldiers and army medical personnel, was sent to Rwanda under a United Nations mandate to help restore order to the war-torn country. These Australians would be exposed to a lack of humanity they were not prepared for and found hard to fathom.

On 22nd April 1995, the daily horror and tragedy they had witnessed escalated out of control. At a displaced persons' camp in Kibeho, in full view of the Australian soldiers, over 4,000 unarmed men, women and children died in a hail of bullets, grenades and machete blades at the hands of the Rwandan Patriotic Army. Constrained by the UN peacekeeping Rules of Engagement, these Australians could only watch helplessly and try to assist the wounded under the gaze of the trigger-happy killers.

Pure Massacre is a record of what happened during this peacekeeping mission. Kevin 'Irish' O'Halloran, a Platoon Sergeant at the time, stresses the weaknesses of the UN charter and what happens when 'good men do nothing'. He pulls together the perspectives of those Australian soldiers who served in Rwanda at this time. Pure Massacre gives a new and personal voice to the Kibeho Massacre. It takes a special type of bravery, discipline and compassion to do what these soldiers did. Little did they know, when the second tour of Rwanda was over, that they would be the highest decorated UN peacekeeping contingent since the Korean War.

For many, their service in Rwanda would come with a personal toll. No Australians died during and immediately after the massacre at Kibeho, but as Pure Massacre testifies, the suffering and tragedy is embedded in their memories. 1 vol, 148 pgs 2016 AUSTRALIA, BIG SKY PUBLISHING

He was determined to ensure that they were unbeatable in the air, particularly against their Cold War adversaries flying the already legendary MiG fighter jets.

Working with the support of General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, Jr, and under conditions of the utmost secrecy, the CONSTANT PEG program was launched with Peck as the original 'Red Eagle.' This fascinating history was first revealed in Steve Davies' acclaimed Red Eagles: America's Secret MiGs, but this book is the insider's perspective, complete with never-before-published anecdotes and photographs, revealing how Peck battled bureaucracy and skepticism to ultimately establish the premier fighter pilot training center. 1 vol, 352 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-201690 Pringle, Ian DINGO FIRESTORM: The Greatest Battle of the Rhodesian Bush War On 23 November 1977, an armada of helicopters and airplanes took off from Rhodesian airbases and crossed the border into Mozambique. Their objective: to attack the headquarters of the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army, where thousands of enemy forces were concentrated. Codenamed Operation Dingo, the raid was planned to coincide with a meeting of Robert Mugabe and his war council at the targeted HQ. It would be the biggest conflict of the Rhodesian Bush War.

In this fascinating account, Ian Pringle describes the political and military backdrop leading up to the operation, and he tells the story of the battle through the eyes of key personalities who planned, led and participated in it. Using his own experience as a jet and helicopter pilot and skydiver, he recreates the battle in detail, explaining the performance of men and machines in the unfolding drama of events. It's a fresh, gripping recreation of a major battle in southern African military history. 60+ b/w and color photos and b/w maps. 1 vol, 304 pgs 2013 UK, HELION

At that time tribal quarrels, generally over water, were taking place in the troubled strip of country between the Protectorate and Ethiopia; the Ogaden. It was the Scouts' difficult task to keep the warring clansmen apart. It gives a vivid account of a nineteen-year-old in command of Somali troops in a fascinating and unpredictable country.

The second part of the book deals with the author's second period of service with Muslims, a quarter of a century later. This time in the Southern Province of Oman - Dhofar. Here he commanded the Northern Frontier Regiment of the Sultan's Armed Force in a limited but fierce war against Communist Insurgents. The existence and missions of the two detachments were classified secrets. The armies of the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies posed a threat to Western Europe. US military planners decided they needed a plan to slow the juggernaut they expected when and if a war began. The plan was Special Forces Berlin. 1-200370 Stirling, Robert Special Forces Sniper Skills Special Forces Sniper Skills is a hard hitting account of the men, weapons and techniques used to coldly eliminate high value targets on the battlefield. Though many books have become best-sellers through telling one side of the story - a sniper's experiences, a training manual or a weapons catalogue - none before have combined the whole spectrum of a sniper's life and skills into one gripping book. This book examines the role of the sniper, and the unique skills employed, when serving as part of a Special Forces unit including the British SAS, the US Navy Seals and the Russian Spetznaz. The book is illustrated with photographs of every aspect of the sniper's trade and stories from the real-life experiences of the author's comrades: men who have served in almost every overt and covert conflict since World War II. 1 vol, 248 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-980058 Stirling, Robert SAS ULTIMATE GUIDE TO COMBAT: How to Fight and Survive in Modern Warfare I've written this book to help you - the soldier - kill the enemy when you get the chance and, most importantly, come back home in one piece. To achieve this aim I've covered combat training from boot camp up to the level required of a Special Forces soldier. And then gone on to add a few tricks of my own.

I've done a bit of soldiering (Northern Ireland, SAS deployments, Bush Wars in Africa, life as a merc) and been in my fair share of fire-fights. I've only been wounded twice and learnt from both occasions. I'm going to use my experience to teach you to play the game. I'm not going to teach you how to survive in snowy mountains for a month with only one tea-bag or how to kill a room fill of people with only a toothpick. There are plenty of books that do that already.

This book will teach you how to fight and survive war in the 21st century from the tools of the trade, to avoiding getting shot or blown-up, from surviving an interrogation to defending a position. This is a book not for the faint hearted, but then neither is war. 1 vol, 344 pgs 2012 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-210750 Streatfeild, Richard HONOURABLE WARRIORS: Fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan - A Front-line Account of the British Army's Battle for Helmand In 2009 Major Richard Streatfeild and his men fought for six months against the Taliban in Sangin, northern Helmand. They were engaged in over 800 fire-fights. They were the target of more than 200 improvised explosive devices. Ten men in his company were killed, 50 were wounded. This is their story - and it is the story, from the front line, of Western intervention in Afghanistan.

His graphic personal account gives an inside view of the physical, psychological and political battle to come to terms with severe casualties and the stress of battle while seeking the support of the local population. As he describes the day-to-day operations, he provides a fascinating record of the Taliban's guerrilla tactics and the British response to them. 1-202890 Taylor, Justin A WHISPER IN THE REEDS: 'The Terrible Ones' - South Africa's 32 Battalion at War This amazing work relates the experiences of Justin Taylor who served as the Signals Officer for the South African Defense Force's infamous 32 Battalion - the 'Terrible Ones'! As a young officer he trained in the intricacies of Signaling before volunteering for Border Duty and service with 32 Battalion - a request that was met with astonishment - 'you want to work with 32 Battalion!?'

This book takes you into the discipline of military communications as never before, delivering a new perspective on the work of 'Nine Charlie'; the Battalion Signals Officer with his mantra of 'check, check and recheck!' It illustrates how a unit's Signals Officer sits at the core of military operations, allowing Command elements to control and coordinate war-fighting, whilst countering the never ending failures of equipment and communications. What is more, it emphasizes how the Signals Officer needs to remain abreast of enemy eavesdropping.

Little is known of 32 Battalion - a unit that drew its origins from the Angolan Civil War of 1975 - most of its troops were black Portuguese-speaking soldiers; the remnants of Holden Roberto's FNLA guerrilla army that had fought against the Portuguese colonials. Established by the legendary Colonel Breytenbach and barracked at 'Buffalo Base' in the Caprivi Strip, 32 Battalion was to develop a reputation for military prowess that was second to none. 'A Whisper in the Reeds' takes you into the heart of this elite unit and its military capability. It relates how black and white worked together with a mutual respect forged in the cauldron of combat.

Taylor was placed to take part in one of 32 Battalion's most spectacular operations - the Battle of Savate. Here, the Battalion undertook an aggressive assault on an entrenched enemy brigade that was positioned deep in Angola. Thrown into the chaos of combat, Taylor experienced the intensity and horror of close quarter battle. Working close with the Officer Commanding he saw first hand the difficulty of command and control in a kinetic assault environment. In addition he saw close friends killed and was himself wounded. His account of this historic battle is one of the most comprehensive ever and should be read by every student of military history.

Tasked to train new signalers in the skill of military signaling, Taylor designed and delivered a training program that earned him the respect of both his superiors and the students under training - a Chief of the SADF Commendation medal acknowledging his skill and professionalism.

Justin Taylor was the consummate soldier, utterly professional and dedicated to the trade of military signaling. Read this work and learn why 'a whisper in the reeds' will always carry the story of 32 Battalion.

Justin Taylor grew up on a sugar farm in Zululand and spoke Zulu before he could speak English. He was sent to boarding school for ten years before reporting for National Service in 1979. Doing 'your bit' for your country ran in Taylor's family - his grandfather was a fighter pilot in the Royal Flying Corps and in the Second World War his father flew Spitfires for the SAAF.

In 1979 he was drafted into the military, completing two years of National Service as a Signals Officer with 32 Battalion in the Namibian / Angolan conflict (1979-80). Justin was wounded at the Battle of Savate and awarded the Chief of SADF Commendation Medal (MMM) for services of a high order. He then went on to complete part-time military service with 2 Reconnaissance Regiment.

1-214930 Tonder, Gerry van MALAYAN EMERGENCY It is 25 years since the end of the Cold War, now a generation old. It began over 75 years ago, in 1944-long before the last shots of the Second World War had echoed across the wastelands of Eastern Europe-with the brutal Greek Civil War. The battle lines are no longer drawn, but they linger on, unwittingly or not, in conflict zones such as Iraq, Somalia and Ukraine. In an era of mass-produced AK-47s and ICBMs, one such flashpoint was Malaya . 80 b/w & 30 color illustrations.

By the time of the 1942 Japanese occupation of the Malay Peninsula and Singapore, the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) had already been fomenting merdeka - independence - from Britain. The Japanese conquerors, however, were also the loathsome enemies of the MCP's ideological brothers in China. An alliance of convenience with the British was the outcome. Britain armed and trained the MCP's military wing, the Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA), to essentially wage jungle guerrilla warfare against Japanese occupying forces. With the end of WWII, the anti-Japanese fighters became anti-British, and, using the same weapons and training fortuitously provided by the British army during the war, the MCP launched a guerrilla war of insurgency.

Malaya was of significant strategic and economic importance to Britain. In the face of an emerging communist regime in China, a British presence in Southeast Asia was imperative. Equally, rubber and tin, largely produced in Malaya by British expatriates, were important inputs for British industry.

Typically, the insurgents, dubbed Communist Terrorists, or simply CTs, went about attacking soft targets in remote areas: the rubber plantations and tin mines. In conjunction with this was the implementation of Mao's dictate of subverting the rural, largely peasant, population to the cause. Twelve years of counterinsurgency operations ensued, as a wide range of British forces were joined in the conflict by ground, air and sea units from Australia, New Zealand, Southern and Northern Rhodesia, Fiji, and Nyasaland. 1 vol, 128 pgs 2017 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-205920 Tucker-Jones, Anthony THE SOVIET-AFGHAN WAR: Images of War Series This photographic history of the Soviet-Afghan War of 1979 to 1989 gives a fascinating insight into a grim conflict that predated the American-led campaign in that country. In an unequal struggle, the mujahedeen resisted for ten years, then triumphed over Moscow. For the Soviet Union, the futile intervention has been compared to the similar humiliation suffered by the United States in Vietnam. For the Afghans the victory was just one episode in the long history of their efforts to free their territory from the interference of foreign powers.

By focusing on the Soviet use of heavy weaponry, Anthony Tucker-Jones shows the imbalance at the heart of a conflict in which the mechanized, industrial might of a super power was set against lightly armed partisans who became experts in infiltration tactics and ambushes. His work is a visual record of the tactics and the equipment the Soviets used to counter the resistance and protect vulnerable convoys.

It also shows what this grueling conflict was like for the Soviet soldiers, the guerrilla fighters and the Afghan population, and it puts the present war in Afghanistan in a thought-provoking historical perspective.

1-214760 van der Bijl, Nicholas OPERATION BANNER: The British Army in Northern Ireland 1969-2007 The book opens by setting the historic backdrop to The Troubles. In summer 1969 the annual Loyalist marching season sparked violence in Londonderry which spread rapidly. After three days of violence the British Government deployed troops in support of the Royal Ulster Constabulary. Initially the Catholic community welcomed the Army's presence but this was to change over the years.

The first soldier was killed in 1971 and a further 48 died that year. January 30 1972 - Bloody Sunday - galvanized IRA recruitment and the British Embassy was burnt in Dublin. The Official IRA bombed Aldershot HQ of the Parachute Regiment and in August 1972 the Army launched Op Motorman to clear No Go areas. Internment followed and the Province was firmly in the grip of sectarian violence. The next 30 years saw a remorseless counter-terrorist campaign which deeply affected the lives of all the people of Northern Ireland and several generation of the British Army.

The Peace Process ground on for over 10 years but the campaign formally ended in 2007 with the establishment of hitherto unimaginable power sharing. 1 vol, 288 pgs 2017 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-205300 van der Bijl, Nick CONFRONTATION: The War with Indonesia 1962 - 1966 For over four years in the 'Swinging Sixties' the armed forces of the UK were engaged in a little publicized but crucial jungle war against communist aggressive on the vast island of Borneo.

At any one time up to 50,000 troops (half of the Army's strength today) were deployed along a 1,000-mile front. Their enemy was the communist-led Indonesians whose leaders were determined to seize the states of Sarawak, Sabah, and the oil rich Brunei, all of whom for their part wished to maintain their Commonwealth links. The catalyst for the war was the 1962 uprising in Brunei which was quickly crushed by the bold intervention of British army units.

The arrival of Major General Walter Walker, himself a controversial figure, gave the subsequent campaign a clear direction. Indonesian incursions were rigorously defended and ruthlessly pursued. Top Secret 'Claret' operations took the fight to the enemy with cross border operations initially using Special Forces and later with Chindit-style long range patrols. The outcome was a text book military victory thus avoiding a British 'Vietnam' debacle. 1 vol, 304 pgs 2014 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-205320 van der Bijl, Nick and Aldea, David 5th INFANTRY BRIGADE IN THE FALKLANDS WAR For many people it was 3 Commando Brigade, commanded by Major General Julian Thompson, and made up of Royal Marines and Paras that recaptured the Falklands. Yet 5th Infantry Brigade played a key and until now little acknowledged role in this extraordinary saga. Cobbled together in haste (having been stripped of its assets to bring 3 Commando Brigade up to strength), it comprised principally of two Guards battalion (2nd Scots and 1st Welsh) and the Gurkhas.

Many felt the 5th was inadequately trained when it sailed from Southampton on the QE2 and this view was given substance by early disasters such as the tragedy at Bluff Cove. Yet by the end, its contribution, of which Tumbledown is the best known, could not be denied. Why then was its commander (Brigadier Tony Wilson) so conspicuously ignored when the medals and decorations were handed out? 1 vol, 256 pgs 2014 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-204290 Venter, Al PORTUGAL'S GUERRILLA WARS IN AFRICA: Lisbon's Three Wars in Angola, Mozambique and Portuguese Guinea 1961-74 Portugal's three wars in Africa in Angola, Mozambique and Portuguese Guinea (Guine-Bissau today) lasted almost 13 years - longer than the United States Army fought in Vietnam. Yet they are among the most underreported conflicts of the modern era.

Commonly referred to as Lisbon's Overseas War (Guerra do Ultramar) or in the former colonies, the War of Liberation (Guerra de Libertacao), these struggles played a seminal role in ending white rule in Southern Africa.

Though hardly on the scale of hostilities being fought in South East Asia, the casualty count by the time a military coup d'etat took place in Lisbon in April 1974 was significant. It was certainly enough to cause Portugal to call a halt to violence and pull all its troops back to the Metropolis. Ultimately, Lisbon was to move out of Africa altogether, when hundreds of thousands of Portuguese nationals returned to Europe, the majority having left everything they owned behind. Independence for all the former colonies, including the Atlantic islands, followed soon afterwards.

As a foreign correspondent, Al Venter covered all three wars over more than a decade, spending lengthy periods in the territories while going on operations with the Portuguese army, marines, and air force. Venter's camera was always at hand; most of the images used between these covers are his. 1 vol, 544 pgs 2014 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

Equally unique, was the exclusive use of social media to invite and encourage individuals to tell their personal stories, without apology or recrimination, and so provide an indelible oral history of the war. Color & b/w photos, and illustrations.

Over a period of three years, 21,000 of them spoke: national service troops, permanent force officers, aviators, aircrew, medics, submariners and padres. Erstwhile antagonists also stepped up to the plate, placing their own personal first-hand experiences amongst those of their enemies of yesterday: Russians, Cubans, Angolans and SWAPO.

The story is further enriched by the inclusion of a rich plethora of hitherto unseen 'unofficial' photographs of stolen memories, in a war situation where the taking of any such photographs was strictly prohibited. Veterans unabashedly wear their hearts on their sleeves, speaking of the psychological impact of untold tragedy and grief; of bravery and unmitigated fear; of shenanigans and mischievous escapades to relieve the pressures of war; of miracles and fate; and of camaraderie. 1 vol, 540 pgs 2016 SOUTH AFRICA, 30 DEGREES SOUTH PUBLISHERS
