1-2184905 Stallard, John Close Quarters! Cruel Seas supplement While gigantic warships stalk the open oceans, engaging enemies over the horizon with their titanic weapons, much smaller craft hug the coastal waters, protecting the land against raids and invasion. Such naval combat was often quick, brutal and decisive.

Brave sailors gun the engines of their smaller, less well-protected boats in order to rapidly close within sight of the enemy and engage them with machineguns, autocannons and torpedoes, raking the enemy boats with bullets or lighting the night sky with explosions. With such visceral close quarter fighting, many crews fought and died on the waves of the unforgiving cruel seas.

This supplement includes eleven new historic scenarios, spanning the seas of this global conflict as well as a random scenario generator. Also included are expanded ship rosters for the seafaring nations and new rosters for the Finnish Navy and Yugoslav Partisan Fleet. New rules for amphibious invasions and experimental Q-ships are presented as well as expanded rules for aircraft and submarines.

These new additions to your games of Cruel Seas will help you turn the tide of battle.

Close Quarters is a supplement for Cruel Seas, the 1/300 scale tabletop wargame of World War Two naval battles. A copy of the Cruel Seas rulebook is needed to use this supplement.

1-222560 Dillon, John All at Sea - Naval Support for the British Army During the American Revolutionary War The American Revolutionary War was a conflict that Britain did not want, and for which it was not prepared. The British Army in America at the end of 1774 was only 3,000 strong, with a further 6,000 to arrive by the time that the conflict started in the spring of 1775. The Royal Navy, on which the British depended for the defence of its shores, trade and far-flung colonies, had been much reduced as a result of the economies that followed the Seven Years War. 9 b/w maps, 9 tables

In 1775 the problem facing government ministers, the War Office, and the Admiralty was how to reinforce, maintain and supply an army (that grew to over 90,000 men) while blockading the American coast and defending Britain's many interests around the world; a problem that got bigger when France entered the war in 1778. With a 3,000 mile supply line, taking six to eight weeks for a passage, the scale of the undertaking was enormous.

Too often in military histories the focus is on the clash of arms, with little acknowledgement of the vital role of that neglected stepchild - logistics. In All At Sea, John Dillon concentrates on the role of the Navy in supporting, supplying and transporting the British Army during the war in America. Because of individual egos, other strategic priorities, and the number of ships available, that support was not always at the level the British public expected. However, without the navy the war could not have been fought at all.

1-938009 Various STRATEGY & TACTICS QUARTERLY # 9 - American Revolution w/ Map Poster American Revolution: Britain was the superpower of the day in the last half of the eighteenth century: her navy the equal of any two others; possessed of rich colonies in North America, the Caribbean, India, and the Far East; with a merchant fleet carrying the wealth of nations across every ocean. All was not as stable as it could be. The British citizens of North America, among the world's wealthiest and healthiest peoples just beginning the subjugation of a continent, resented what they saw as the heavy hand of the mother country. In just a few years petitions turned to violence and finally to rebellion. The empire turned to crush the uprising, and on paper should have had little trouble doing so. The combination of great distance and colonial determination blunted British efforts, and the rebellion grew into a long war, with former British antagonists waiting in the wings for an opportunity to pounce. Patrick S. Baker examines the course of this war in great detail, with maps and images aplenty, to explain how a contest seemingly so one-sided could reach its unexpected end. A map poster is included depicting the campaigns and battles of the American Revolution throughout the colonies and on the revese the war as it expanded into the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and India. 1 vol, 48 pgs 2020 US, DECISION GAMES

1-222570 McNicholls, Paul Journey Through the Wilderness - Garnet Wolseley's Canadian Red River Expedition of 1870 In the spring of 1870 an Anglo-Canadian military force embarked on a 1,200 mile journey, half of which would be through the wilderness, bound for the Red River Settlement, the sight of present day Winnipeg. At the time the settlement was part of the vast Hudson's Bay Company controlled territories which Canada was in the process of purchasing. 35 b/w photos/ills, 8 maps

Many historians have written on the events of the troubles at Red River in 1869/70, but the expedition itself is usually treated as a footnote and given a few lines or at most a paragraph. The author has found only one relatively recent account (published in the 1980s) that dealt with the expedition in detail and he has frequently, though respectfully, disagreed with many of the assertions and conclusions found therein. Consequently, it has been found necessary to go to the expeditionary force documents and first hand accounts of the men who took part, to properly understand exactly what the Red River Expedition was about and what the men who made up the force actually went through. By doing this author believes he has come up with a lively and original recounting of this little known story in British Imperial and Canadian history. 1 vol, 194 pgs 2020 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-217042 Lyulin, Stanislav PRUSSIAN CAVALRY: 1808-1840 Volume 2 The book is bilingual. The complete text, including the picture descriptions, is in Russian as well as in English, fully illustrated in color, and in large format.

Anyone interested in military history knows that the Prussian kingdom was one of the main protagonists of the Napoleonic Wars. After severe defeats in the fight against Napoleon I and great humiliation by the French occupation, Prussia finally went to the renewal of its own army. In association with Austria and Russia, Napoleon I was able to defeat and move into triumph in Paris. At the same time, the Prussian army and, above all, its uniformity and equipment, to say the least, has been poorly illuminated in Russian military history literature.

The book is a consistent continuation of the series of articles on the uniform of the Prussian Army, published in the years between 2008 and 2016, in the Old Arsenal, Sergeant, and Kaiser journals. Unfortunately, the magazine format prevented the exhaustive processing of the topic, and part of the artwork had to be omitted. This book attempted to collect the most important pieces of uniforms, uniform parts and equipment from the most important Russian and international collections.

Of course, the book cannot claim to portray all the small elements and differences in the uniforms and equipment of the Prussian soldiers in the first half of the 19th century, but it is to be hoped that this book will be for all collectors, Historians and interested parties will be a helpful reference work in clarifying uniformkundlicher issues. 1 vol, 258 pgs 2020 RUSSIA

1-222630 Bowman, Martin The Vought F4U Corsair - Images of War series First flown in 1940, the prototype Vought F4U Corsair instantly became the fastest fighter in the world and the fastest US aircraft of any description. Powered by a huge 18-cylinder Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp engine driving an enormous 13 feet 4 inch propeller, the first Corsairs were capable of 417mph. This figure would rise to nearly 450mph in later versions. 120 color & black and white illustrations

Production began in 1941, not only by Vought but also by Goodyear and Brewster, and the F4U entered service with the US Navy in September 1942. The aircraft subsequently came to be extensively used from land and sea by the US Marines, Royal Navy and Royal New Zealand Air Force. Famous squadrons like VMF-214 'The Black Sheep' and VF-17 'Jolly Rogers', along with many others, maintained total ascendancy over the Japanese for the rest of the war - a remarkable achievement for a single type.

After the Second World War the Corsair remained in production and was used with distinction by the French in Indo-China and again by the US Navy in Korea. Since then Corsairs have achieved significant success in air races and more and more are being restored to fly for museums and warbird enthusiasts the world over.

This comprehensive new book combines technical information and detailed development history with a fascinating combat history told, in many cases, by the Second World War and Korean War pilots themselves. Well researched, readable and illustrated with scores of rare and previously unpublished photographs, The Vought F4U Corsair is the perfect book for any fan of the 'bent wing bird'.

1-222580 Thomas, Paul Hitler's Light Tanks - Images of War series Hitler's Wehrmacht led the way in armored warfare as the successful blitzkriegs in Poland and North West Europe in 1940 so convincingly proved. The contribution of light tanks such as Panzers I, II and 35(t) was critical.

As the war spread to the Balkans, north Africa and the invasion of Russia, German engineers worked tirelessly modifying existing light tanks and developing new models. The growing Soviet armored threat, in particular, spawned tank destroyers such as the Marder III Panzerj1 vol, 128 pgs 2020 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-222620 Green, Michael United States Navy Submarines 1900-2019- Images of War series In 1900 the US Navy took into its first submarine, the Holland VI, into service. With a single torpedo tube, it had a crew of six, weighed 82 tons and traveled submerged at 6.2mph at a depth of up to 75 feet. 250 color & black and white illustrations

Contrast this to the 18 Ohio Class nuclear-powered submarines which entered service in 1981. Weighing 21,000 tons with a crew of 155, its underwater speed is estimated at 30mph at a depth of some 1,000 feet. It carries 16 nuclear warhead ballistic missiles with a range of 4,600 miles.

This latest Images of War title provides a detailed insight into the many US Navy submarine classes. Particularly fascinating is the post Second World War program of nuclear powered submarines stating with the Nautilius and progressing to the Skate, Thresher, Sturgeon, Los Angeles and George Washington. Admiral Hyman G Rickover's role as Father of the nuclear navy is examined in detail.

1-222590 Baxter, Ian The Fall of Berlin - Images of War series By March 1945, the Red Army had closed in on Berlin. Marshal Zhukov, with almost a million soldiers and 20,000 tanks and guns at his disposal, launched his assault of the Seelow Heights. While costly with 30,000 Russians killed, it brought the Russian Army to the gates of the capital.

On 20 April, Hitler's 56th birthday, Soviet artillery began a massive bombardment of the doomed city. The Fuhrer ordered every soldier, Hitlerjugend and Volksstrum to fight to the death. The house-to-house fighting that followed was brutal and savage with heavy casualties for both military and civilians.

Using superb Russian and German imagery this fine Images of War series book describes the Russian assault and Nazi last-ditch defense of Hitler's capital during the final days of the Third Reich.

1-222610 Diamond, Jon Montgomery's Rhine River Crossing Operation Plunder- Images of War series After the Normandy break-out, the Allies' headlong dash east came to a halt in the autumn with the ill-fated MARKET GARDEN operation and over-extended supply lines short of the Rhineland. After repulsing the Nazis' daring Ardennes offensive, Montgomery's and Bradley's Army Groups cleared the Reichwald and Rhineland and closed on the Rhine.

With both sides aware of the strategic significance of this physical barrier the stakes could not have been higher. Eisenhower's plan involved a vast airborne assault by General Ridgway's XV11 Airborne Corps (codename VARSITY) and the simultaneously coordinated river crossing by Monty's 21 Army Group codename PLUNDER with Dempsey's British Second Army and General William H. Simpson's US Ninth Army.

This superbly illustrated and researched book describes the March 1945 assault crossing involving naval amphibious craft, the air and artillery bombardment and diversionary attack by the British 1st Commando brigade at Wesel. In concert with VARSITY and PLUNDER, Patton's US Third Army Group crossed further south.1 vol, 240 pgs 2020 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-222600 Martinez, Eduardo Hungarian Armoured Fighting Vehicles in the Second World War- Images of War series The actions of the German armored forces during the Second World War is well known. What has not yet been so well told are the actions of the armored forces from Germany's allies. While it is true that their performance was generally quite secondary in comparison to the Reich, the actions of the Hungarian armored forces should be highlighted.

Hungary not only managed to organize its armored forces, but developed its own military industry that was able to supply weapons and equipment to its troops. The Hungarian military was able to produce all kinds of weapons, vehicles and armored vehicles, although they were generally under-gunned and under-armored.

This book rescues Hungary's participation during the Second World War from oblivion through the use of superb photographs, which take the reader from the beginning of the USSR campaign and the conquest of Soviet lands, before ending with the bloody battles to avoid the Soviet and Romanian advance into Hungary (the Siege of Budapest) and the last clashes in Austrian and Slovenian territory before the army's unconditional surrender.

The author highlights the bravery and courage of these men, as well as the terrible fate of the Hungarian armored forces when the Soviet Army invaded Hungary.
