1-225570 Brooks, Richard and Curry, John A Practical Guide to Medieval Warfare This book examines operational and tactical medieval warfare: how armies deployed, advanced, fought, won and lost. Includes dressing the ranks, advance to contact, battle cries, pre-battle speeches, sieges, and street fighting.

This book assumes medieval warriors largely knew what they were doing and if we do not comprehend the decisions they took when waging war, this reflects a lack of understanding on our part.

Includes five sets of rules to create pitched battles, skirmishes, raids, and retreats on the tabletop.
Game 1: Middle Aged Spread - Battle level rules 1066-1485
Game 2: Sword and Spear: Wargaming Low-Level Battle Tactics
Game 3: Once More unto the Breach: Skirmish Rules
Game 4: Gaming Retreats: Cymerau (1257)
Game 5: Gaming Cattle Raids: The Night Belongs to Paddy

1-225580 Perla, Peter and Curry, John Confrontation in the Falklands! (1982) Wargaming Methods, Scenarios and Games First of a new series that explores a particular area of warfare through the use of wargames. Each game has been crafted to examine different aspects of the conflict. Playing these games, along with reading the supporting designer's notes, aims to help the reader actively develop their understanding through experiential learning.

The goal is to help them develop a deeper understanding than from just reading primary and secondary sources about the war. Reading memoirs and commentary is essential, but so is making command decisions, such as looking at the conceptual map of the Falkland Islands and pondering how close to move the British aircraft carriers to the land action. It is in this space that wargaming rules supreme in the taxonomy of interactive learning techniques.

This book contains four games:
Game 1: Matrix Game - Wider conflict to be resolved without a land battle on East Falklands
Game 2: The Falklands War: Task Force Commander - game about naval risk management looks at the decisions made by the Royal Navy to support the amphibious landings and subsequent advance to Stanley
Game 3: Battalion Commander - explores the land battle - often decisions in the planning stage set out the path to subsequent success or failure and includes a sample scenario the Battle for Goose Green
Game 4: The Falklands II (1984) - professional wargame designed by Paddy Griffith about a potential second Argentine invasion several years after the Falklands War, and includes a detailed model of Cold War air combat. The game demonstrated that a second Argentine invasion would initially be successful.

1-225610 Swanton, Justin Ancient Battle Formations Examines the main battle-winning formations of the Ancient world, determining their composition, function and efficacy.

An introductory chapter looks at the fundamental components of the principal battle formations of heavy and light infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots, showing how they bolstered the individual's soldier's willingness to fight. The rest of the book focuses on massed infantry that reigned supreme in this era: the heavily armored Greek hoplite phalanx that was immune to the weaponry of its non-Greek opponents; the Macedonian pike phalanx that was unbeatable against frontal attacks so long as it kept order; the Roman triplex acies which, contrary to popular opinion, consisted of continuous lines in open order, with file spaces wide enough to allow embattled infantry to fall back after which those files closed up instantly against the enemy.

A careful study of the Greek and Latin of the sources sheds fresh light on how these formations were organized and worked, reevaluating many conventional notions and leading to some surprising conclusions. 1 vol, 320 pgs 2020 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-225590 Romane, Julian The First and Second Italian Wars 1494-1504:Fearless Knights, Ruthless Princes and the Coming of Gunpowder Armies Describes the course of military operations and political machinations in Italy from 1494 to 1504, beginnig with the French conquest of much of Italy, their regression, and the second French invasion that allied with the Pope's son, Cesare Borgia.

Cesare managed to double deal too many people; his efforts ended in disaster. The French agreement with the Spanish allowed them to retake Naples only to be defeated at the Garigliano by general Gonzalo de Cordoba.

These wars were not just another series of medieval fights. These battles were different from what had gone before: the French utilized a new method of artillery transport; the Spanish commander formulated a new system of military unit organization, and Cesare Borgia sought different systems of raising troops and forming states. And all the powers managed to spend vast amounts of money the likes of which no one had imagined before. This was the emergence of the so-called Military Revolution.

1-225640 Wills, Garry David Wellington at Bay - The Battle of Villamuriel, 25 October 1812 The Battle of Villamuriel was the largest engagement of Wellington's retreat from Burgos in 1812. Twice as many men were involved as in the better-known actions at Villadrigo/Venta del Pozo two days earlier. Includes 12 b/w maps, 5 color plates, 3 b/w and 6 color photos, numerous tables.

Improves significantly on previous accounts in the campaign histories by Napier, Fortescue, Oman, and Divall. Archival sources from Great Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal have been used to build a coherent and balanced account. The orders of battle are detailed and the military experience of both the commanders and their units is provided. Detailed maps of the deployment of both forces throughout the action are provided. A detailed breakdown of the casualties on both sides is also given.

Also highlighted are the previously unreported role of 9th Foot as an aspiring light infantry regiment, and the 1835 controversy around Napier's account using the archives of the Sir John Oswald and a potential source for Napier's account is identified. This has resulted in a detailed study of one day's action in the 1812 campaign, with a view to extracting improved understanding of how the armies fought. The wargamer is provided with detailed scenarios to enable them to recreate the action on the table top. The action is effectively a rematch between the Anglo-Portuguese 5th Division and the 5th Division of the Armee de Portugal, only a few months after the former successfully dispersed the latter at Salamanca in July. 1 vol, 224 pgs 2020 UK, HELION AND SON
