1-978100 Forsyth, Robert 100 ME-262 vs P-51 MUSTANG: Europe 1944-45 Examines the two fighters in detail, exploring their history and development and containing accurate descriptions of the combats between the P-51 Mustang and the Me 262 in what were some of the most bitter and large-scale aerial actions fought over Europe in 1944-45.

Arguably two of the finest fighters built during the course of World War II, the Me 262 and P-51 Mustang heralded new dawns in aircraft performance. Making its operational debut in the summer of 1944, and powered by the Jumo 004 jet engine, the Me 262 outclassed Allied planes in terms of speed and firepower ratio, offering a formidable punch with four 30 mm MK 108 nose-mounted cannons.

However, in the P-51, fitted with the Rolls-Royce (Packard) Merlin engine and drop tanks, the USAAF finally had a fighter that had the 'legs' to escort its heavy bombers deep into Reich airspace and back. If flown to its strengths, the P-51 was more than capable of taking on the feared Me 262 on an equal footing, despite the differences in power and top speed. Indeed, the Mustang proved to be the Luftwaffe fighter arm's nemesis. When the P-51D sortied over Germany from the summer of 1944 onwards, it shredded through the ill-trained and depleted Gruppen of the Luftwaffe's defense wings.1 vol, 80 pgs 2019 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-995277 Hampshire, Edward 277 BRITISH AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT SHIPS: From Suez to the Falklands and the Present Day Amphibious assault ships have been at the center of nearly all of Britain's expeditionary campaigns since World War II, from the Suez crisis of 1956 to operations as far afield as Borneo (1963-66), the Falklands (1982), Sierra Leone (2000), and Iraq (2003).

In major operations such as Suez and the Falklands, the use of amphibious assault ships was essential to the military success of the campaigns. The Suez Crisis saw two of the Royal Navy's former light fleet carriers converted into 'commando carriers' to specialize in amphibious warfare. In the 1960s these were followed by the famous Fearless class ships - the first purpose-built amphibious assault ships in the Royal Navy. With an internal dock, headquarters capability, and multiple landing craft, these 'Landing Platform Docks' were built to project power around the world. When the Falklands were invaded, HMS Fearless was the key to the successful landing in San Carlos.

In the 1990s, a new generation was ordered: the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean and the Albion class LPDs. In recent years Ocean, Albion, and Bulwark have been the largest fighting ships of the Royal Navy and have acted as the navy's flagships, as well as being perhaps the most versatile ships in the navy.1 vol, 48 pgs 2019 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-222220 Forty, George HADRIAN'S WALL: Operations Manual Hadrian's Wall is the largest, most spectacular historical monument in Britain. Nothing else approaches its vast scale: a land wall running 73 miles from east to west and a sea wall stretching at least 26 miles down the Cumbrian coast. Some of its forts are as large as Britain's most formidable medieval castles, and with its mile towers, barracks, and soldier's leisure facilities, the site allows an astonishingly rich insight into Roman frontier life. Hadrian's Wall Operations Manual looks at the design and construction of the wall, from the initial land survey to its busiest period as Rome's most northern frontier.1 vol, 192 pgs 2018 UK, HAYNES PUBLISHING

1-222230 McNab, Chris ROMAN SOLDIER: Operations Manual Details kit, equipment, weapons, and insignia, as well as fighting formations and battle tactics, of the Roman legion and its troops

The history of the Roman Empire and its technological and military prowess resounds through the ages. At its height, the empire covered 5 million square km and held sway over 70 million people. How did a small city state in Latium achieve such prominence and carve an empire against which all other empires are measured?

The answer is, in part, the Roman Legionary. It was Roman soldiers who carved out a foothold in Italy from warring neighbors. It was the legions who made safe the empire from external menaces - such as the Carthaginians, Greeks and Parthians - and who defeated fierce tribal leaders such as Boudicca in Britain and Vercingetorix in Gaul. It was the Roman legionaries who did much of the early building in these provinces and who policed the new borders. They maintained internal order, crushed rebellions by subjects or slaves, and provided the necessary muscle for imperial governors.1 vol, 156 pgs 2018 UK, HAYNES PUBLISHING

1-PWAR093 Bomba, TY PAPER WARS: Issue 93: Wagram 1809 This two-player, but solitaire adaptable, wargame uses a 34x22-inch large-hex (3/4-inch per hex) map, fewer than 12 pages of rules, and one sheet of 228 medium-size (9/16-inch) counters to provide an emperor's-eye-view of this titanic and savagely fought two-day battle.

Each hex represents 875 yards, and each of the two days has four to six turns (depending on morale and exhaustion) with a separating night turn in between. Units of maneuver are mostly multi-step divisions for both sides. The game uses an alternating action sequence that keeps both players fully and tensely involved all throughout every turn.

The French are on the strategic offensive, but there's plenty of opportunity for both players to attack. In fact, the Austrians can win a sudden death victory by capturing the French crossing area over the Danube.1 vol, 64 pgs 2019 US, COMPASS GAMES

1-1947523 Cristini, Luca EYLAU 1807 The Battle of Preussisch-Eylau, fought in extreme weather conditions, under blizzards and temperatures of much below zero between the Great Armee and the Russians of Benningsen on 8 February 1807, has been called the most epic of Napoleon's battles, that which saw the greatest cavalry charge in history, led by Murat at the head of more than 10,000 troopers, but also the most controversial.

For the first time, after the triumphs of Ulm, Austerlitz, and Jena, Napoleon was stopped: throughout the day victory remained in the balance, and only late at night the Russian retreat left Napoleon master of the battlefield. Another battle will be needed at Friedland, four months later, to prompt Tsar Alexander I to call for peace.

Analyzes the French and Russian armies and their organization from the campaigns of Ulm, Austerlitz, and Jena in 1805-1806 to that of Poland of 1807. An hour-by-hour description of the Battle of Eylau and thereafter to the Battle of Friedland. Ends with a description of the battlefield of Eylau-Bagrationovsk today.1 vol, 102 pgs 2019 ITALY, THE SOLDIER SHOP

1-COM1016 Thomas, Stanislas NATIONS IN ARMS: Valmy To Waterloo Wargame Strategic level wargame covers Napoleon in Europe from 1792 to 1815. It uses an extensively updated, modified, and streamlined version of the Le Grand Empire game system from Pratzen Editions (that game covered the 1800-1815 time period). From two to seven players manage annual national production, diplomacy, and most importantly, war. Each game year is broken into four interactive, seasonal turns. A Chit Activation system is used to recreate the 'chaos of war', and events occur using an Historical Event card deck. It features a one-turn tutorial scenario , four epic campaign scenarios, and five smaller scenarios.

The game systems emphasize the military importance of lines of communication, the command and control ability of skilled leaders, quality of troops above quantity, and the impact of battle, epic sieges and attrition on a nation. You will have the power of great leaders at your fingertips, and the might of the corps they commanded: line infantry, guards, militia, supply trains, light and reserve cavalry, fleets and more.

1-969013 Hallion, Richard 013 THE WRIGHT FLYERS 1899-1916: The Kites, Gliders, and Aircraft that Launched the Air Age This book traces the Wright Brothers' story, from their first success on that cold December day throughout their glory years to their eventual eclipse by other aviators. It explores in detail the process that lead them to their pioneering craft and their many subsequent achievements over the following years, and highlights their enduring importance in the age of modern flight.

Orville and Wilbur Wright, two bicycle-making brothers from Dayton, Ohio, secured their place as the most famous names in aviation history when, on December 17, 1903, they made the first powered, controlled, and sustained heavier-than-air flight. But their success over the cold and windswept Carolina dunes that day has overshadowed their many other accomplishments before and after that historic flight. The Wrights' progression from theory to analysis to ground-testing components and wing shapes, and then to flight-testing kites, gliders, and their first powered aeroplane, marked the world's first successful 'X-Plane' research and development program. They established a template all subsequent aircraft have followed, one still relevant in the era of hypersonic flight and drone research.1 vol, 80 pgs 2019 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-222200 Yeo, Mike DESPERATE SUNSET: Japan's Kamikazes Against Allied Ships 1944-45 Fully illustrated throughout, Desperate Sunset examines the development and evolution of the kamikaze using first-hand accounts, combat reports and archived histories.

By the middle of 1944, Imperial Japan's armed forces were in an increasingly desperate situation. Its elite air corps had been wiped out over the Solomons in 1942-43, and its navy was a shadow of the force that had attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. But the Japanese had one last, desperate, card to play.

The Japanese High Command decided that the way to inflict maximum damage on the superior enemy forces was to get the poorly trained Japanese pilots to crash their explosive-laden aircraft onto their target, essentially turning themselves into a guided missile. The kamikazes announced themselves in the immediate aftermath of the Leyte Gulf naval battles, sinking the USS St. Lo and damaging several other ships. The zenith of the kamikaze came in the battle of Okinawa, which included ten kikusui (Floating Chrysanthemum) operations which involved up to several hundred aircraft attacking the US fleet.1 vol, 352 pgs 2019 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-963045 MODERN WAR # 45: Dragon & Hermit Wargame The Dragon and The Hermit Kingdom is a two player game that covers the hypothetical simulation of a second Korean War that could occur in the very near future. This game is a precursor to The Dragon that Engulfed the Sun (Modern War # 42). It simulates the war that would have occurred on the Korean peninsula just prior to that game's setting. The Dragon that Engulfed the Sun assumes that a Chinese victory had already occurred in Korea. This game, however, simulates the entirety of that preceding conflict, beginning with a supposed North Korean invasion of South Korea.
