1-213570 Megehee, Mark EAGLES ASCENDING: An Outline Military History of the Rise of Brandenburg-Prussia, 1600-1700 Eagles Ascending begins with the union of two petty states, the Mark of Brandenburg and the Duchy of Prussia in 1618, which led to the Kingdom of Prussia by the end of the 17th Century -- a dizzying rise of political and military power in less than a century. Before there could be Frederick The Great, there had to be Frederick Wilhelm, 'The Great Elector.'

This fascinating account traces the origins and rise to dominance of Brandenburg-Prussia across the 17th Century, and introduces readers to the remarkable men who laid the foundations for the later German Empire, it's Army and Navy. Information, much of it appearing in English for the first time, makes the 'mover and shakers' of a distant era spring to life, their portrayals made more compelling by superb period artwork, maps, and plans. Here are the wars, battles and leaders who by land and sea shaped the emergence from medieval to modern Germany.

The lively narrative is enhanced by 26 original full color plates specifically researched for this work detailing the development of the uniforms of Brandenburg-Prussia in the century in which modern military uniforms began. Tactics, and the ever more sophisticated weapons which determined them in the 17th Century, are detailed as well.

Conflicts such as the Scanian War, the First Northern War, and the War of the League of Augsburg, mark the progression of Brandenburg-Prussia from weakling to king maker status. Orders of battle, ship plans, period and new battle maps contribute to this splendid foray into the history of a proto-nation rising to greatness in a century more violent even than our own. Complete with footnotes, bibliography, and thoroughly indexed, this book fills a void in English language literature of the military roots and first 'blitkriegs' of German Armies to come.1 vol, 154 pgs 2016 US, TVAG

1-213530 Jones, Serena NO ARMOUR BUT COURAGE: Colonel Sir George Lisle, 1615-1648 Few army officers of King Charles I shone as bright as George Lisle during the English Civil Wars, yet have drawn so little attention from subsequent historians. Born in London in 1615, Lisle's father was a well-connected publisher and monopolist, and his mother a kinswoman of the Duke of Buckingham.

Raised in the city of Westminster in a landscape of court intrigue, royal favoritism and ill-advised royal financial experiments, Lisle took to soldiering and was commissioned as a Lieutenant-Colonel at the outbreak of war in 1642. He fought at Edgehill; then at Chalgrove and the First Battle of Newbury in 1643 - latterly where his courage in leading a forlorn hope against a wall of musketeers and artillery first drew him to public attention.

Commissioned shortly afterwards as a full Colonel, in 1644 he took charge of a veteran regiment and was noticed again for his diligence and efficiency at the Battle of Cheriton, despite the battle being lost. Weeks later, he was promoted to tertio command and accompanied Charles on his critical 'night march' from Oxford.

At the Second Battle of Newbury in October, to prevent his position being overwhelmed, he famously tore off his coat and led three charges in his shirtsleeves - driving off the enemy and preventing disaster. Reputedly refusing a knighthood, he wintered as a garrison commander before leading the principal assault on the city of Leicester in May 1645 and then being badly wounded at Naseby.

Knighted in December, he remained at Oxford until its surrender in June 1646 - returning to London in 1647. In 1648, he took up arms again during the Kent rebellion before enduring a three-month siege inside the town of Colchester. Infamously (and controversially), he was executed after the starving town surrendered - and this catapulted him to the status of 'Royalist martyr.'

In this first ever biography of Lisle, the author has scoured dozens of primary sources for fragmentary references - painstakingly piecing together his personal background and reexamining every known detail of his career. The accuracy of existing stories and long-held assumptions about him is investigated minutely, and the first well-informed assessments made of his character and motives. Finally, the persistent memory of his execution is traced forwards through later writers and painters into the 20th century to complete the first cohesive picture of one of King Charles' most loyal, effective and respected military officers.1 vol, 512 pgs 2017 UK, HELION and COMPANY

1-213580 Clover, Gareth THE AMERICAN SHARPE: The Adventures of an American Officer of the 95th Rifles in the Peninsular and Waterloo Campaigns Sharpe and his adventures has made the 95th Foot renowned again and the discovery of an unpublished diary by an American from Charleston South Carolina who served, despite his father's objections, as an officer in this elite regiment has caused great excitement. Includes 16 high quality color prints.

James Penman Gairdner was born in Charleston, SC, but he was sent back to the 'Old Country' for his education, receiving his schooling at Harrow. After school, rather than joining his father's merchant business, he decided to become a soldier and received a commission in the famous 95th Rifles.

He subsequently served, without a break, from the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo in January 1812 until the end of the war in 1814. He then fought in the Waterloo campaign and formed part of the Army of Occupation. He was wounded on three occasions.

Throughout his service he kept a journal, which he managed to maintain on almost a daily basis. This journal, along with a number of letters that he wrote to his family are presented for the first time.

Readers will not find dramatic stories of great battles or adventurous escapades. Instead, Gairdner, details the everyday life of one of Wellington's soldiers; one of marches and billets, of the weather, the places, and the people of the Iberian Peninsula and of Paris and Occupied France - the real nature of soldering.

His diaries also highlight the very strange relationship between these newly independent Americans and the 'Old Country' they had so recently fought with; which even allowed for a true American boy to fight in the British Army, but not in America!1 vol, 272 pgs 2017 UK, FRONTLINE BOOKS

1-213560 McCarthy, Michael CONFEDERATE WATERLOO: The Battle of Five Forks, April 1, 1865, and the Controversy that Brought Down a General The Battle of Five Forks broke the long siege of Petersburg, triggered the evacuation of Richmond, precipitated the Appomattox Campaign, and destroyed the careers and reputations of two generals. Includes 55 images and 10 maps.

General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia had been locked into the sprawling defenses surrounding the logistical stronghold of Petersburg and the Southern capital at Richmond for more than eight months when General Grant struck beyond his far left flank to break the extended Rebel lines. A series of battles led up to April 1, when General Phil Sheridan's forces struck at Five Forks. The attack surprised and collapsed General George Pickett's Confederate command and turned Lee's right flank. An attack along the entire front the following morning broke the siege and forced the Virginia army out of its defenses and, a week later, into Wilmer McLean's parlor to surrender at Appomattox.

Despite this decisive Union success, Five Forks spawned one of the most bitter and divisive controversies in the postwar army when Sheridan relieved Fifth Corps commander Gouverneur K. Warren for perceived failures connected to the battle. The order generated a life-long effort by Warren and his allies to restore his reputation by demonstrating that Sheridan's action was both unfair and dishonorable. The struggle climaxed with a Court of Inquiry that generated a more extensive record of testimony and exhibits than any other US military judicial case in the 19th Century. In addition to Sheridan and Warren, participants included Generals U. S. Grant and Winfield S. Hancock, and a startling aggregation of former Confederate officers.1 vol, 336 pgs 2017 US, SAVAS BEATIE

1-213540 Prekatsounakis, Yannis CRETE: THE BATTLE FOR HERAKLION 1941: The Campaign Revealed Through Allied And Axis Accounts Crete, 20 May 1941: the first campaign-sized airborne assault is launched. Many books have been written about this famous invasion, with the emphasis mainly on the battles for Maleme and Chania. The Battle for Heraklion - an epic struggle - remained largely forgotten and widely unstudied.

The desperate fight for Heraklion had everything: street-fighting in the town; heroic attacks against well-fortified positions and medieval walls; heavy losses on all sides; and tragic stories involving famous German aristocratic families like the von Bluchers and members of the Bismarck family.

This book highlights personal stories and accounts - and the author's access to records from all three sides allowed accounts to be placed in their correct place and time. Finally, the history of the battle is written with the added perspective of extensive Greek accounts and sources. In contrast, earlier books were based solely on British and German sources -- totally ignoring the Greek side. Many of these accounts are from people who were fighting directly against each other. Some reveal what the enemies were discussing and thinking while they were shooting at or attacking each other. Some accounts are so accurate and detailed that we can even identify who killed whom.

In addition, long-lost stories behind both well known and previously unpublished pictures are revealed. For the first time, 75 year-old mysteries are solved: what were the names of the paratroopers in the planes seen crashing in famous pictures? What was the fate of soldiers seen in pictures taken just before the battle? The author has studied the battlefield in every detail -- thus giving the reader the opportunity to understand actions and incidents by examining what happened on the actual field of battle.

For example, how was it possible for a whole platoon to be trapped and annihilated, as in the fate of Wolfgang Graf von Blucher? Such a question is not easily answered even by people with a military background. How was it possible for the paratroopers to fail in their attempt to occupy the town? The answers to questions like these became very clear when the author walked through the battlefields - following the accounts of the people from all sides who had fought there and which describe the same incidents.

The author's extensive research is vividly presented via detailed maps and photographs, both from the era of the battle and today; even battlefield archaeology plays a role in revealing what really happened on the battlefield. 1 vol, 304 pgs 2017 UK, HELION and COMPANY

1-213571 Hooton, E.R., Tom Cooper, Farzin Nadimi THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR VOLUME 1: The Battle For Khuzestan, September 1980-May 1982 The Iran-Iraq War was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century and accidentally created the current nightmare of Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. Includes 120 photos, 15 artworks, five maps, and four diagrams.

Uses materials obtained from US intelligence circles and British governmental archives. It provides a unique insight into a war which began through miscalculation and rapidly escalated into the longest conventional conflict in the post-Second World War era.

The first volume looks at the background and describes in detail how Saddam Hussein decided to invade, but hamstrung, the Iraqi Army to restrict its greatest success to a narrow strip of territory in Iran's southern province of Khuzestan. This left the Iraqis unable to either advance or withdraw, and exposed them to ever greater and more successful Iranian counter-strokes which drove them out in May 1982 in the ferocious Battle of Khorramshahr.1 vol, 80 pgs 2017 UK, HELION and COMPANY

1-213572 Hooton, E.R., Tom Cooper, Farzin Nadimi THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR VOLUME 2: Iran Strikes Back, June 1982-December 1986 The Iran-Iraq War was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century and accidentally created the current nightmare of Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. Includes 120 photos, 15 artworks, five maps, and four diagrams.

Volume 2 takes up the account after Iraq withdrew from Khuzestan and is based upon material from both sides: US intelligence data, British Government documents and secret Iraqi files. Iraq's withdrawal exposed the great southern city of Basra to Iranian attack, but it was shielded by fortifications based upon a huge antitank ditch - the so-called 'Fish Lake' - which the Iranians tried to storm in the summer of 1982.

This bloody failure left Tehran in a position where prestige prevented a withdrawal into Iran, but the armed forces lacked the resources to bring the conflict to a favorable conclusion. During the next four years, the Iranians tried to outflank the 'Fish Lake' defenses initially through the marshes in the north and finally through an attack on the Fao Peninsula, which increased national prestige, but was a strategic failure and paved the way for Iraq's massive victories in 1988. This followed a series of successful defensive battles in which the Iranians were driven back with great loss. This account describes the battles in greater detail than before and, by examining them, provides unique insights and ends many of the myths which are repeated in numerous other accounts of this conflict.1 vol, 112 pgs 2017 UK, HELION and COMPANY
