1-216850 Elliott, Simon SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS IN SCOTLAND: The Northern Campaigns of the First Hammer of the Scots Since 1975 much new archaeological evidence has come to light to illuminate the immense undertaking of Septimius Severus' campaigns in Scotland, allowing for the first time the true story of this savage invasion to be told.

In the early 3rd century Severus, the aging Roman emperor, launched an immense 'shock and awe' assault on Scotland that was so savage it resulted in eighty years of peace at Rome's most troublesome border. The book shows how his force of 50,000 troops, supported by the fleet, hacked their way through the Maeatae around the former Antonine Wall and then pressed on into Caledonian territory up to the Moray Firth.

Severus was the first of the great reforming emperors of the Roman military, and his reforms are explained in the context of how he concentrated power around the imperial throne. There is also an in-depth look at the political, economic and social developments that occurred in the Province.1 vol, 288 pgs 2018 UK, GREENHILL BOOKS

1-914020G Beym Fredricc VAE VICTUS BOARD GAME # 20: Heroes & Kings Four battles from the series Au Fil de l'Epee, previously published in DTP by Canons en Carton, in revisited and redesigned versions. Features the celebrated heroes and kings of the French Middle Ages: William the Conqueror, Saint Louis, du Guesclin and Joan of Arc.

During the battle of Val es dunes, the man still known as William the Bastard, allied with the King of France Henry I, set about reconquering his duchy by confronting his rival Gui de Brionne and an army of rebellious barons. On open terrain, two lines of chevaliers face off and prepare for a bloody combat under the eyes of Raoul de Taisson who had not yet chosen his side.

Since the conquering of the Poitou by Philippe Auguste, there had been to definitive treaty to resolve the contradictions between French suzerainty and the former English rights. Hugh of Lusignan publicly withdraws his allegiance to Alphonse, Count of Poitiers, the French king's brother, and calls on his stepson, Henry III, the king of England for help. Louis IX of France is forced to react, resulting in the battle of Taillebourg during which the French knights cross the Charente River by force and overthrow the Anglo-Gascons.

Cocherel is a battle characteristic of the scientific and cunning methods the Constable du Guesclin employed to defeat his enemies. By feigning a hasty retreat and luring Charles the Bad into an imprudent pursuit, du Guesclin gives King Charles V of France with a valuable and important victory over one of his worst enemies.

Patay is the culminating point of the Loire campaign inspired by Joan of Arc who just liberated Orleans. This is the first of the memorable June 18 in the History of France with Joan of Arc and her companions La Hire, Xantrailles, Dunois, Alencon, and Richemont triumphing over John Talbot's English. This time the English archers won't have the final word.

Heroes & Kings puts players at the head of small armies dominated by powerful knights. These short and varied battles require both risk taking and a solid tactical sense.
Will you fare as well as these semi-mythical figures of the History of France in vanquishing the English and the rebellious barons?

1-216810 Peers, Chris KING STEPHEN AND THE ANARCHY: Civil War and Military Tactics in Twelfth-Century Britain The Anarchy, the protracted struggle between Stephen of Blois and the Empress Matilda for the English crown between 1135 and 1154, is often seen as a disastrous breakdown in one of the best-governed kingdoms of medieval Europe. But perhaps the impact of the conflict has been overstated, and its effect on the common people across the country is hard to judge. Describes each phase of this civil war, in particular the castles and sieges that dominated strategic thinking, and sets the fighting in the context of the changing tactics and military systems of the 12th century. 1 vol, 192 pgs 2018 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-216880 Greenwalt, Phillip and Robert Orrison A SINGLE BLOW: The Battles of Lexington and Concord and the Beginning of the American Revolution. April 19, 1775 The history of the Battles of Lexington and Concord (April 19, 1775) were the culmination of years of unrest between those loyal to the British monarchy and those advocating for more autonomy and dreaming of independence from Great Britain in the future. On the morning of April 19th, Gage sent out a force of British soldiers under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith to confiscate, recapture, and destroy the military supplies gathered by the colonists and believed to be stored in the town of Concord. Includes 150 images and 6 maps.

Due to the alacrity of men such as Dr. James Warren, Paul Revere, and William Dawes, utilizing a network of signals and outriders, the countryside was well-aware of the approaching British, setting the stage for the day's events.

When the column reached the green of Lexington, Massachusetts, militiamen awaited their approach. The first shots of April 19th would be fired there. The rest of the day unfolded accordingly.1 vol, 192 pgs 2018 US, SAVAS BEATIE

1-216890 Greenwalt, Phillip and Robert Orrison VICTORY OR DEATH: The Battles of Trenton and Princeton, December 25, 1776 - January 3, 1777 December 1776: Just six months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George Washington and the new American Army sit on the verge of utter destruction by the banks of the Delaware River. The despondent and demoralized group of men had endured repeated defeats and now were on the edge of giving up hope. Washington feared 'the game is pretty near up.' Includes 200 images and 10 maps.

Rather than submit to defeat, Washington and his small band of soldiers crossed the ice-choked Delaware River and attacked the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey on the day after Christmas. He followed up the surprise attack with successful actions along the Assunpink Creek and at Princeton. In a stunning military campaign, Washington had turned the tables, and breathed life into the dying cause for liberty during the Revolutionary War.

The campaign has led many historians to deem it as one of the most significant military campaigns in American history. One British historian even declared that 'it may be doubted whether so small a number of men ever employed so short a space of time with greater or more lasting results upon the history of the world.'

In Victory or Death, historian Mark Maloy not only recounts these epic events, he takes you along to the places where they occurred. He shows where Washington stood on the banks of the Delaware and contemplated defeat, the city streets that his exhausted men charged through, and the open fields where Washington himself rode into the thick of battle. Victory or Death is a must for anyone interested in learning how George Washington and his brave soldiers grasped victory from the jaws of defeat.1 vol, 192 pgs 2018 US, SAVAS BEATIE

2-201710 Grant, Charles WELLINGTON 1813: The Vittoria Campaign Contains 35 pages of color plates by Bob Marrion plus color maps of the key engagements.

In May 1813 Wellington bade farewell to Portugal and the Allied army marched into Spain. Wellington's advance continuously outflanked the French Army of King Joseph and Marshal Jordan, causing them to fall back to the east. On 21 June 1813, the French made a stand at Vittoria. In a bold and imaginative attack Wellington launched the Allies at the French, turning both flanks of the enemy.

By evening Wellington had achieved a resounding victory and the French were in rout. The destruction of the French army was only prevented by a night of plundering as the Allies fell on the baggage of the French army bearing the loot of Spain. A month later Marshal Soult, who had replaced Joseph and Jordan, launched a counter attack with a reorganized French army. After driving the Allies back through the Pyrenees passes at Maya and Roncesvalles the French were defeated by Wellington at Sorauren and retreated back into France.

On 31 August San Sebastian was stormed and the French garrison finally surrendered on 8 September. Wellington was poised to invade France.1 vol, 192 pgs 2018 UK, PARTIZAN PRESS

1-216790 Smith, Digby MURAT'S ARMY: The Army of the Kingdom of Naples 1806-1815 Although its crown was initially given to Joseph Bonaparte, the brief history of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Naples will be forever best associated with the reign of King Joachim Murat, Napoleon's famous and flamboyant cavalry commander, from 1808 to 1815. Known more for the splendor of its uniforms than the achievements of its troops, Naples under Murat nevertheless became a major, if short-lived, player on the Italian Peninsula. Includes 99 color plates and supporting b/w images.

This book is based around a series of 99 plates from the work of the military illustrator Henri Boisselier covering the army and navy of the Kingdom of Naples, reproduced with the kind permission of the Anne S.K. Brown Collection. Each plate is accompanied by a commentary on the figure, comparing Boisselier's depiction with the actual state of the army at the date of their portrayal. The accompanying text details the strength of each corps of the army (royal guard, infantry, cavalry, artillery, engineers, command and staff officers, and civilian para-military organizations) including uniform details, badges of rank, inter-company distinctions, flags and standards. The battle history of the units is also recounted, along with a brief history of the kingdom.1 vol, 128 pgs 2018 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-OSG208 Zucker, Kevin NAPOLEON'S RESURGENCE: War of Liberation Part 1: Spring 1813 Renaissance of the Grande Armee Napoleon advanced into Saxony with a fresh army of 130,000 men, conscripted and trained from scratch in just four months. The green cannon fodder lost 25,000 of their number at the Battle of Lutzen on May 2nd, and 15,000 more fell out along the march from weakness, malnutrition, and disease.

With additional reinforcements the army surged again to 160,000, intercepting the Coalition armies at Bautzen. The French lost 12,000 men, and even more through march attrition. The Russians and Prussians were losing just as many, and had not as many to lose. Yet Napoleon's mere 6,500 cavalry were wholly inadequate to impel his pursuits with the needed punch to damage the enemy. In hopes of building up his strength in cavalry and the other arms, Napoleon accepted a six-week truce. Late Summer negotiations, when they finally came, were not seriously engaged.

Battles: Lutzen, Struggle for the Four Villages, 2 May; Bautzen, The Guard's Moment of Truth, 20-21 May; and Luckau, Gateway to Berlin, 6 June.

Components: Two 22x34-inch maps, One 17x22-inch map, One 11x34-inch map, 560 die-cut units, 100 playing cards, Two rulebooks, 15 player aid cards, and Game box.1 vol, 1 pgs 2018 US, OSG

1-216760 Glantz, David M. OPERATION DON'S MAIN ATTACK: The Soviet Southern Front's Advance on Rostov, January-February 1943 With the defeat and destruction of German Sixth Army at Stalingrad all but certain at the end of 1942, the war on the Eastern Front took a definitive turn as the Germans struggled to erect a new defensive front to halt the Soviet juggernaut driving west. Operation Don's main attack is the first detailed study of the dramatic clash of armies that followed, unfolding inexorably over the course of two months across an expanse of more than 1,600 kilometers.

Using recently released Russian archival material never before available to researchers, David M. Glantz provides a close-up account, from both sides, of the planning and conduct of Operation Don-the Soviet offensive by the Red Army's Southern front that aimed to capture Rostov in January-February 1943.

His book includes a full array of plans, candid daily reports, situation maps, and strength and casualty reports prepared for the forces that participated in the offensive at every level. Drawing on an unprecedented and comprehensive range of documents, the book delves into many hitherto forbidden topics, such as unit strengths and losses and the foibles and attitudes of command cadre. Glantz's work also presents rare insights into the military strategy, combat tactics, and operational art of such figures as Generals Eremenko and Malinovsky and Field Marshal Erich von Manstein.1 vol, 912 pgs 2002 LAWRENCE, UNIV OF KANSAS

1-216870 Isaev, Alexei THE END OF THE GALLOP: The Battle for Kharkov -- February-March 1943 Based heavily on Soviet records, this book presents a lively account of a pivotal battle on the Eastern Front, heavily illustrated with rare photographs. Includes 16 pages of b/w photos, three maps, and five tables.

Red Army units were exhausted and had incurred heavy losses in the German counterattacks during February-March. During the course of the battle for Kharkov Soviet forces encountered a new, powerful enemy in the shape of the Panzer divisions of the SS. These were elite mechanized formations equipped with the latest technology, which were soon to become leading participants in decisive battles.

The battles outside Kharkov between February-March 1943 were dramatic maneuvering battles and the success of both sides hung in the balance on a daily basis. Operations such as these are always much more interesting than the tedious, meat grinding positioning for a 'house in the forest,' that is abundant in the histories of both world wars. Maneuvering, the deployment of corps and divisions around an area to attack an enemy where they are most vulnerable, played a much more important role than the arithmetic of the numbers of tanks and guns. The steady equalization of both Soviet and German sides added spice to this menu of a classic maneuvering battle.1 vol, 160 pgs 2018 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-216860 McGilvray, Evan ANDERS' ARMY: General Wladyslaw Anders and the Polish Second Corps 1941-46 Along with thousands of his compatriots, Wladyslaw Anders was imprisoned by the Soviets when they attacked Poland with their German allies in 1939. They endured terrible treatment until the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 suddenly put Stalin in the Allied camp, after which they were evacuated to Iran and formed into the Polish Second Corps under Anders' command.

Once equipped and trained, the corps was eventually committed to the Italian campaign, notably at Monte Cassino. The author assesses Anders' performance as a military commander, finding him merely adequate, but his political role was more significant and caused friction in the Allied camp. From the start he often opposed Sikorski, the Polish Prime Minister in exile and Commander in Chief of Polish armed forces in the West. Indeed, Anders was suspected of collusion in Sikorski's death in July 1943 and of later sending Polish death squads into Poland to eliminate opponents. Furthermore, Anders voiced his deep mistrust of Stalin and urged a war against the Soviets after the defeat of Hitler.1 vol, 280 pgs 2018 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-216830 Tucker-Jones, Anthony THE BATTLE FOR THE CAUCUSUS 1942-1943: Images of War Series In late 1942 Hitler's forces advanced far into the Caucasus in the southern Soviet Union in one of the most ambitious offensives of the Second World War, but this extraordinary episode is often forgotten-it is overshadowed by the disastrous German attack on Stalingrad which took place at the same time. Includes over 150 wartime photographs.

Operation Edelweiss was designed to seize the oil fields of Maikop, Baku, and Grozny. Seen by some as a wholly unnecessary diversion of resources from the critical confrontation at Stalingrad, the assault on the Caucasus aimed to secure oil supplies for the Germans and deny them to the Soviets.

As this memorable selection of photographs shows, the Werhmacht came close to success. Their forces advanced almost as far as Grozny, famously raising the Nazi flag over Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in the region, before they were compelled into a hurried withdrawal by the rapid deterioration of the German position elsewhere on the Eastern Front.1 vol, 136 pgs 2018 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-216840 Tucker-Jones, Anthony TANK WRECKS OF THE EASTERN FRONT 1941-1945: Images of War Series Four years of armored battle on the Eastern Front in WWII littered the battlefields with the wrecks of destroyed and disabled tanks. This photographic history provides a graphic record of the various types of tank deployed by the Red Army and the Wehrmacht during the largest and most destructive confrontation between mechanized armies in military history.

During the opening stages of the war the German victors regularly photographed and posed with destroyed Soviet armor. Operation Barbarossa left 17,000 smashed Soviet tanks in its wake, and the heavy and medium tanks such as the T-28, T-35, KV-1 and the T-34 proved to be a source of endless interest. Once the tide turned the wrecked and burnt-out panzers - the Mk IVs, Tigers and Panthers - were photographed by the victorious Red Army.1 vol, 136 pgs 2018 UK, PEN & SWORD
