1-216980 WHAT A TANKER: WWII Tank Combat Rules Game of WWII tank combat which focusses on the players taking command of one (or more) tanks and fighting their way through the battlefields of WWII.

The emphasis of the game sees tank crews gain experience and, as a consequence of achieving successful kills against enemy tanks, advance up the career ladder. Crews can progress to command a succession of the iconic armored vehicles of WWII or may choose to remain as an Ace in one AFV. With experience comes the ability to better influence the battle and gain an edge over your opponents, but remember, even the greatest Ace can be brought down by a lucky shot from a raw crew. As well as hunting down your foe, you must protect your experienced crew as a valuable asset in war.

The rules are 72-full color pages in total, including scenarios and full lists for France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, the Soviet Union and the United States. The great campaign system allows you to progress your tank crew to the illusive Ace status and through a series of iconic tanks of WWII.1 vol, 72 pgs 2018 UK, TOO FAT LARDIES

1-199298 Kinrade, Warwick BATTLEGROUP: Torch EGYPT, 1942... After defeat at the Battle of Gazala, the British 8th Army has been chased back through the western deserts, fighting a rearguard action to hold the line near a railway halt called El Alamein. Here, the tide of the desert war would turn decisively in the British's favor. At El Alamein Rommel's weary army was repeatedly defeated and forced into a very long retreat to save itself. Meanwhile, American and British troops land on the shores of Morocco and Algeria in Operation Torch, with the plan to cut-off the Germans by capturing Tunisia. A hard seven-month campaign would follow in the final struggle to capture North Africa.

* BACKGROUND A general overview of the later North Africa campaign, from Gazala, through three battles at El Alamein to Operation Torch and the Allies' attack into Tunisia. With British, American and French forces of 1st Army in the north and 8th Army pursuing Rommel's Panzer Armee Afrika to the Mareth Line, and then beyond, in the south. This book covers the desert fighting from May 1942 to May 1943 and the Axis' ultimate surrender in Tunisia.

* ARMY LISTS Nine army lists designed to be played with the character of the principal combatants for North Africa: the veteran Deutsche Afrikakorps for 1942 and Defenders of Tunisia for 1943, Italian armored and infantry divisions to face British (and Commonwealth) armored and infantry divisions. Also, for Tunisia, the first combat operations for the US 1st Armored Division and US infantry divisions, as well as ex-Vichy French 'March' divisions, now turned against their former Axis allies.

* SPECIAL RULES New special rules to adapt the core Battlegroup rules to the later North African battlefields. Recreating the character of desert fighting, with its dusty conditions, reliance on tank warfare and mobile formations, and the wearing effects of the harsh conditions. Also rules for the colder, muddy, difficult hill-country of northern Tunisia, a very different type of battlefield, all helping to create games with the distinctive feel for the end of the 'desert' war.1 vol, 96 pgs 2017 UK, THE PLASTIC SOLDIER COMPANY

1-217060 Fitzpatrick, David EMORY UPTON: Misunderstood Reformer Biography of Emory Upton (1839-1881) is widely recognized as one of America's most influential military thinkers. His works-The Armies of Asia and Europe and The Military Policy of the United States-fueled the army's intellectual ferment in the late nineteenth century and guided Secretary of War Elihu Root's reforms in the early 1900s. Upton is also widely misunderstood as an antidemocratic militaristic zealot whose ideas were 'too Prussian' for America. Includes 15 black and white illustrations and 4 maps.

A devout Methodist farm boy from upstate New York, Upton attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and served in the Civil War. His use of a mass infantry attack to break the Confederate lines at Spotsylvania Courthouse in 1864 identified him as a rising figure in the U.S. Army. Upton's subsequent work on military organizations in Asia and Europe, commissioned by Commanding General William T. Sherman, influenced the army's turn toward a European, largely German ideal of soldiering as a profession. Yet it was this same text, along with Upton's Military Policy of the United States, that also propelled the misinterpretations of Upton. This, however, show Upton's dedication to the ideal of the citizen-soldier and placing him within the context of contemporary military, political, and intellectual discourse.1 vol, 344 pgs 2018 US, UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA PRESS

1-217040 Lyulin, Stanislav PRUSSIAN CAVALRY: 1808-1840 Volume 1 The book is bilingual. The complete text, including the picture descriptions, is in Russian as well as in English, fully illustrated in color, and in large format.

Anyone interested in military history knows that the Prussian kingdom was one of the main protagonists of the Napoleonic Wars. After severe defeats in the fight against Napoleon I and great humiliation by the French occupation, Prussia finally went to the renewal of its own army. In association with Austria and Russia, Napoleon I was able to defeat and move into triumph in Paris. At the same time, the Prussian army and, above all, its uniformity and equipment, to say the least, has been poorly illuminated in Russian military history literature.

The book is a consistent continuation of the series of articles on the uniform of the Prussian Army, published in the years between 2008 and 2016, in the Old Arsenal, Sergeant, and Kaiser journals. Unfortunately, the magazine format prevented the exhaustive processing of the topic, and part of the artwork had to be omitted. This book attempted to collect the most important pieces of uniforms, uniform parts and equipment from the most important Russian and international collections.

Of course, the book cannot claim to portray all the small elements and differences in the uniforms and equipment of the Prussian soldiers in the first half of the 19th century, but it is to be hoped that this book will be for all collectors, Historians and interested parties will be a helpful reference work in clarifying uniformkundlicher issues. 1 vol, 276 pgs 2018 RUSSIA

1-217050 Meixsel, Richard Bruce FRUSTRATED AMBITION: General Vicente Lim and the Philippine Military Experience, 1910-1944 Biography of Vicente Podico Lim (1888-1944) was once his country's best-known soldier. The first Filipino to graduate from West Point and a graduate of the US Army War College, Lim figured in every significant military development in the Philippines during his thirty years in uniform. Frustrated Ambition is the first in-depth biography of this forgotten figure, whose career paralleled the early 21th century history of the Philippine military. Includes 9 black and white illustrations and 5 maps.

As independence seemed increasingly likely for the Philippines in the 1930s, Lim positioned himself to take a leading role in developing armed forces for a sovereign nation. But as Lim maneuvered behind the scenes, Manuel L. Quezon, soon to be the commonwealth president, revealed that he had invited General Douglas MacArthur to serve as military adviser to the Philippines.

Frustrated Ambition corrects the conventional historical narrative of events thereafter-one that emphasizes the failure of the nascent Philippine military under MacArthur and inflates the general's heroic role in the defense of Bataan and Corregidor. Richard Bruce Meixsel restores Lim as the then-recognized leader of the opposition to MacArthur's mission, and shows how Lim took the Philippine Army in a more tenable direction as MacArthur's military system foundered.

World War II brought Lim to the fore. While MacArthur directed his troops from Corregidor, Lim commanded a division on Bataan that may have suffered more combat losses at the battle of Abucay than did all American units on Bataan during the entire campaign. When the U.S. high command turned its efforts to evacuating the Philippine Islands, Lim began to prepare for the ensuing underground struggle against the Japanese-a fight that cost him his life.

By recounting Vicente Lim's career, Frustrated Ambition illuminates forgotten episodes in Philippine history, offers new perspectives on military affairs during the American occupation, and recovers the story of Filipino soldiers whose service changed the course of their country's military history.1 vol, 368 pgs 2018 US, UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA PRESS

1-938002 Various S&T QUARTERLY # 2: America in World War I America in World War I: In April 1917, the United States entered World War I and the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) proved decisive in the ensuing Allied victory on the Western Front. Yet, a mere 10 years prior the US military was woefully unprepared for war.

How did America build a war winning military that deployed tanks, airplanes, and cutting edge combat divisions? This issue tells the story of the rise of American military doctrine in the late 19th century, the Spanish-American War, and the Herculean efforts to build a modern military. It also shows how the AEF fought and won big battles on the front lines of one of the greatest wars in history, as well as establishing the foundations for the US military that triumphed in World War II and remains a major force on today's global scene.

This issue includes analysis, maps, orders of battle, descriptions of weapons, and biographies of notable military figures such as John Pershing, Billy Mitchell, the young George Patton, and Homer Lea. Includes a map poster.1 vol, 48 pgs 2018 CA, DECISION GAMES

1-DG1404 Various OPERATION OLYMPIC & CORONET: Wargame Olympic & Coronet is a hypothetical simulation on a regiment-brigade level of the planned invasion of Japan. Olympic is the planned November 1945 invasion of Kyushu, the southernmost Japanese Home Island, while Coronet is the planned March 1946 invasion of the Tokyo Plain.

As the Japanese were committed to a strict operational plan organized around the theme of an aggressive beach defense, the basic version of Olympic & Coronet is a solitaire game in which a single player controls both opposing forces. During solitaire play, you should alternately direct each opposing force so as to maximize the ability of each to fulfill its particular victory conditions. You will have complete control over all American (US) units, while the Japanese units will be restricted by their doctrine rules. To as great a degree as possible, those prescribe how and when Japanese units move and fight. The Japanese doctrine rules fill the role of the absent Japanese player.

In addition to the basic solitaire version, rules for a two-player game, and optional rules for the solitaire and two-player versions are included.

In Olympic, the American objective is to rapidly destroy or drive all Japanese units from the extreme southern portion of Kyushu, and to do that as economically as possible in terms of American casualty points. The Japanese objective is to prevent the American objective from being attained by inflicting the greatest possible number of American casualty points and continuing to occupy and defend southern Kyushu for as long as possible.

In Coronet, the American objective is to rapidly destroy or drive all Japanese units from Tokyo and the surrounding area, and to do that as economically as possible in terms of American casualty points. The Japanese objective is to inflict the greatest possible number of American casualty points and continue to occupy and defend Tokyo and the surrounding cities and towns for as long as possible.

1-956060 various WORLD AT WAR 60: Eisenhower's War Eisenhower's War (EW) is a two-player wargame covering the final 11 months of World War II in northwest Europe, from D-Day through the end of April 1945, when the Anglo-Allied campaign in the west effectively came to its end. The game is also easily adaptable for solitaire play. The political boundaries shown on the map are those drawn by Hitler prior to his downfall.

Victory is judged by measuring the player's performances against that of their historic counterparts, with the historic outcome reckoned as a draw. If the Allied player does better than Eisenhower, he will be adjudged to have won the game. If he does worse, he'll be reckoned to have lost the game. Each turn of play equals one or two months of 'real' time, depending on the time of year.

Components: 22x34 inch map, 176 die-cut counters.1 vol, 62 pgs 2018 US, DECISION GAMES

1-217020 Brokhausen, Nick WE FEW: U.S. Special Forces in Vietnam This riveting memoir details the actions and experiences of a small group of Americans and their allies who were the backbone of ground reconnaissance in the Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam War. On his second tour to Vietnam, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. This unit was part of MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group), or Studies and Observations Group as it was innocuously called.

The small recon companies that were the center of its activities conducted some of the most dangerous missions of the war, infiltrating areas controlled by the North Vietnamese in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. The companies never exceeded more than 30 Americans, yet they were the best source for the enemy's disposition and were key to the US military being able to take the war to the enemy, by utilizing new and innovative technology and tactics dating back to the French and Indian Wars.

Brokhausen's group racked up one of the most impressive records of awards for valor of any unit in the history of the United States Army. It came at a terrible price, however; the number of wounded and killed in action was incredibly high. Those missions today seem suicidal. In 1970 equally so, yet these men went out day after day with their indigenous allies - Montagnard tribesmen, Vietnamese, and Chinese Nungs - and faced the challenges with courage and resolve.1 vol, 360 pgs 2018 US, CASEMATE
