1-214040 Chadwick, Frank ARMIES OF OCTOBER: Armies and Weapons of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War In October of 1973 the Arab armies of Egypt, Syria, and almost a dozen other states launched a surprise attack against the Israeli-occupied territories in the Sinai and Golan Heights.

This offers a comprehensive study of the belligerent armies available under a single cover. For the armies of Israeli, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the Palestinian Liberation Army.

The Armies of October features:

* Army organization
* Doctrinal strengths and weaknesses
* Detailed notes on equipment holdings
* Order of battle down to the battalion level

For Command Decision players we also include game organizations from division to battalion level and a complete list of weapons and combat vehicles with all game statistics.

The October War, the Yom Kippur War, the Ramadan War-all these names described the largest and hardest-fought war in the long history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Never was there a conflict of this scope, featuring this much back-and-forth maneuver, or such dramatic turns of fortune. For the wargamer, this conflict provides armies more balanced in equipment and capabilities than any other Mideast war. It also saw the first widespread use of wire-guided antitank missiles and the first major generation of post-WWII armored vehicles.

The October War provides a unique conflict for study and gaming, a blend of the logical development of WWII weapon systems encountering the early examples of late-century military technology in the form of wire-guided missiles, extensive mechanization throughout the force structure, and omnipresent light antitank weapons.1 vol, 100 pgs 2017 US, TEST OF BATTLE GAMES

1-214050 Hasenhauer, Richard BRIGADE FIRE & FURY: 2nd Edition of Fire and Fury Fire and Fury remains one of the most popular historical military miniatures wargames in the hobby. This second edition provides a fresh look at American Civil War combat. The basic unit is the brigade of infantry or cavalry.

A number of factors made the original rules unique and popular. They were easy to learn, quick and fun to play, and incorporated just the right amount of historical detail. Battles could be fought to a near-historical or at least plausible conclusion. The rulebook format, groundbreaking for its time, had clearly written rules with lots of diagrams and color photographs. We tried our best to remain faithful to these attributes while making a few improvements.

We cleaned up or redesigned some 'clunky' game mechanics. We also added just a little more historical detail some players liked from the regimental-level game but still was appropriate at brigade-level. We rewrote the rules, added better organization and more clarity, and redesigned and added more diagrams. We then playtested the rules thoroughly, using historical scenarios as a benchmark. We also included at the back of the book a fictional army generator for playing pick-up games.

Includes full-color photos and diagrams, two quick reference sheets, and three historical battle scenarios:

1. Battle of First Bull Run - 21 Jul 1861 - First major battle in the East.
2. First Day Battle of Gettysburg - 1 Jul 1863 - Opening phase.
3. The Battle of Reams Station - 25 Aug 1864 - Late-war Petersburg Campaign.

Historical battles do not always make for an evenly balanced game, so the special scenario rules and victory conditions are sometimes adjusted to give either side a chance for victory.

Note: BRIGADE Fire & Fury (OMM # 214050) should not be confused with REGIMENTAL Fire & Fury (OMM # 192210), both by Rich, but different battle scales. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2017 US, FIRE AND FURY

1-666119 Abad, Ruben LAS CAMPANAS DEL DUQUE DE ALBA DE FUENTERRABIA A ARGEL (1524-1541) Few figures in the history of Spain have aroused as much controversy as Fernando Alvarez de Toledo and Pimentel, Duque de Alba. Admired by some and feared by others, he pushed the Spanish empire to achieve its greatest military successes and continental supremacy.

During Fernando's military career he held important positions representing the Spanish Crown throughout the continent. The various political events that took place led one after another to the most committed destinations where Spain struggled to achieve the desired hegemony.

He was governor of the Duchy of Milan (1555-1556), Viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples (1556-1558), Governor of the Netherlands (1567-1573), and Viceroy and Constable of the Kingdom of Portugal (1580-1582). Only the Duke of Alba was a rival and their talents shone in France, Central, North Africa, Germany, the Netherlands, and Portugal.

1-666120 Canales, Francisco Martinez LA GUERRA DE SUCESION DE MANTUA: 1628-1631 The death of Vicente II Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua and Monferrato -- Levante and Poniente bordering with the Spanish Milanese -- opened another dispute in a Europe already in conflict. Who would inherit the duchies attracted the attention of France, the Holy Roman Empire, the intriguing Duke of Savoy, and Spain.

This book investigates the diplomatic maneuvering -- Quevedo himself spying in Venice -- and the battles in Italy, from the plains of the Po River to the steps and Alpine valleys, led by commanders such as Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba and Ambrosio Spinola. 1-214090 van Buskirk, Judith STANDING IN THEIR OWN LIGHT: African American Patriots in the American Revolution The Revolutionary War encompassed at least two struggles: one for freedom from British rule, and another, quieter but no less significant, fight for the liberty of African Americans, thousands of whom fought in the Continental Army. Because these veterans left few letters or diaries, their story has remained largely untold, and the significance of their service largely unappreciated.

Revolutionary-era African Americans began their lives in a world that hardly questioned slavery; they finished their days in a world that increasingly contested the existence of the institution. Judith L. Van Buskirk traces this shift to the wartime experiences of African Americans. Mining first-hand sources that include black veterans' pension files, Van Buskirk examines how the struggle for independence moved from the battlefield to the courthouse-and how personal conflicts contributed to the larger struggle against slavery and legal inequality. Black veterans claimed an American identity based on their willing sacrifice on behalf of American independence. Abolitionists, citing the contributions of black soldiers, adopted the tactics and rhetoric of revolution, personal autonomy, and freedom.

Van Buskirk deftly places her findings in the changing context of the time. She notes the varied conditions of slavery before the war, the different degrees of racial integration across the Continental Army, and the war's divergent effects on both northern and southern states. Her efforts retrieve black patriots' experiences from historical obscurity and reveal their importance in the fight for equal rights-even though it would take another war to end slavery in the United States.1 vol, 312 pgs 2017 US, UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA PRESS

1-214070 Dawson, Paul Lindsay NAPOLEON'S GODS: The Grenadiers a Cheval 1812-1815 The senior regiment of Napoleon's Imperial Guard was the Grenadiers a Cheval, nicknamed the Gods, and hence the title of this book.

As heavy cavalry of the Guard, they took part in the charge of the cavalry of the Guard at Austerlitz. They especially took a share of glory with their charge at Eylau on 8 February 1807. They served in Spain, Austria and Russia. No other cavalry regiment in the French army compared to its service in 1813 and 1814, the campaigns of the Guard par excellence. They were present at Dresden, Leipzig and especially Hanau where they charged the Austrian and Bavarian cavalry, and took part in the famous charges of the Imperial Guard at Waterloo.

This book provides a brief introduction to Napoleon's Imperial Guard and the regiment's place in it, as well as brief early history of the regiment, and a hoof-to-tack description of the Grenadiers a Cheval from the fateful Russian campaign of 1812 to its disbandment in 1815 following the disaster of Waterloo. It describes the horses, uniforms and equipment of the regiment, as well as regimental organization, and provides short biographies of the officers and some of the men, giving a vivid picture of how the men of the regiment lived, and in some cases, how they died.1 vol, 404 pgs 2017 UK, BLACK TENT PUBLICATIONS

1-214080 Bechthold, Mike FLYING TO VICTORY: Raymond Collishaw and the Western Desert Campaign, 1940-1941 Canadian-born flying ace Raymond Collishaw (1893-1976) served in Britain's air forces for 28 years. As a pilot in World War I, he was credited with 61 confirmed kills on the Western Front. When World War II began in 1939, Air Commodore Collishaw commanded a Royal Air Force group in Egypt. It was in Egypt and Libya in 1940-41, during the Britain's Western Desert campaign, that he demonstrated the tenets of an effective air-ground cooperation system.

It was only after the chastening failure of Operation Battleaxe in June 1941, fought according to army doctrine, that Winston Churchill shifted strategy on the direction of future air campaigns-ultimately endorsing the RAF's view of mission and target selection. This book examines his contribution to the British system of tactical air support-a pattern of operations that eventually became standard in the Allied air forces and proved to be a key factor in the Allied victory. Includes 30 b&w illustrations and seven maps.1 vol, 296 pgs 2017 US, UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA PRESS
