1-220580 von Essen, Michael Fredholm CHARLES XI's WAR: The Scanian War Between Sweden and Denmark, 1675-1679 The book describes and analyses the Scanian War, which was fought from 1675 to 1679 between, on one side, primarily Brandenburg and Denmark-Norway and, on the other side, SE - Sweden.

The war was mainly fought in Scania, the former Danish lands along the border with Sweden, and in northern Germany. The Danish objective was to retrieve Scania which, a generation earlier, had been captured by SE - Sweden and ceded by Denmark.

Although the Danish fleet was victorious at sea, and an alliance headed by Brandenburg defeated the Swedes in Germany, the subsequent peace negotiations resulted in no major territorial changes. Danish partisans continued guerrilla operations in Scania for years, yet the former Danish territories remained in Swedish hands. However, the Danish invasion of Scania was defeated by the young Swedish King Charles XI. Includes 75 b/w illustrations, 27 b/w photos, 14 b/w maps, and 8 color plates.1 vol, 262 pgs 2019 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-220520 Graham. D. P. THE IRISH BRIGADE 1670-1745: The Wild Geese in French Service Explains the origins of the brigade and its regiments, the personalities who led them and formed their reputation, and the circumstances of their final dissolution in the aftermath of French Revolution. From the Nine Years War, through the War of the Spanish Succession, and beyond, their descendants would be present at Fontenoy, Culloden, and in the Americas, forever destined to fight for a cause and land which had changed beyond recognition.

Irish troops had fought for Louis XIV in the 1670s, under Irish officers who had little choice but to fight in foreign service, with the blessing of Charles II. With the accession of James II, and the religious politics of who might earn the English crown, they became embroiled in the Jacobite succession crisis, fighting in Ireland, then sent to France under Lord Mountcashel in 1689. With the fall of Limerick in 1691, Patrick Sarsfield led the second 'flight' of 'Wild Geese' to the continent, to fight in a war for the French against the Grand Alliance of Europe, in the vain hope that their loyalty might warrant French support in a return to Ireland under a Jacobite king.1 vol, 352 pgs 2019 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-220530 Atkinson, Rick THE BRITISH ARE COMING: The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777 This initial volume of the American Revolution trilogy covers the first 21 months of the war for independence. From the battles at Lexington and Concord in spring 1775 to those at Trenton and Princeton in winter 1777, American militiamen and then the ragged Continental Army take on the world's most formidable fighting force.

Includes American and British perspectives and covers characters: Henry Knox, the former bookseller with an uncanny understanding of artillery; Nathanael Greene, the blue-eyed bumpkin who becomes a brilliant battle captain; Benjamin Franklin, the self-made man who proves to be the wiliest of diplomats; George Washington, the commander in chief who learns the difficult art of leadership when the war seems all but lost. The story is also told from the British perspective, making the mortal conflict between the redcoats and the rebels all the more compelling.1 vol, 800 pgs 2019 US, HENRY HOLT

1-220540 Scott L. Mingus, Cooper H. Wingert TARGETED TRACKS: The Cumberland Valley Railroad in the Civil War, 1861-1865 Using the railway's voluminous reports, the letters and diaries of local residents and Union and Confederate soldiers, official reports, and newspaper accounts, this book profiles the 1861-1865 Cumberland Valley Railroad connecting Hagerstown, Maryland to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Includes 28 images and three maps.

Because of its proximity to major cities in the Eastern Theater, the Cumberland Valley Railroad was an enticing target for Confederate leaders. As invading armies jostled for position, the CVRR's valuable rolling stock was never far from their minds. Northern military and railway officials, who knew the line was a prized target, coordinated-and just as often butted heads-in a series of efforts to ensure the railroad's prized resources remained out of enemy hands. When they failed to protect the line, as they sometimes did, Southern horsemen wrought havoc on the Northern war effort by tearing up its tracks, seizing or torching Union supplies, and laying waste to warehouses, engine houses, and passenger depots.1 vol, 288 pgs 2019 US, SAVAS BEATIE

1-220570 Samuels, Martin PIERCING THE FOG OF WAR: The Theory and Practice of Command in the British and German Armies, 1918-1940 Since the late 1970s, anglophone and German military literature has been fascinated by the Wehrmacht's command system, especially the practice of Auftragstaktik. There have been many descriptions of the doctrine, and examinations of its historical origins, as well as unflattering comparisons with the approaches of the British and American armies prior to their adoption of Mission Command in the late 1980s. Almost none of these, however, have sought to understand the different approaches to command in the context of a fundamental characteristic of warfare - friction. This would be like trying to understand flight, without any reference to aerodynamics. Inherently flawed, yet this is the norm in the military literature. This book seeks to address that gap. 4 b/w maps, 4 b/w diags, 14 tables

Analyzes the nature of friction and the potential command responses to it, including the development of a typology of eight command approaches, each approach then being tested to identify its relative effectiveness and requirements for success. Examines the British and German armies' doctrines of command during the period to reveal similarities and differences in relation to their perspective on the nature of warfare and the most appropriate responses. For example, this looks at the German doctrine as practiced by Erwin Rommel, both as a young subaltern fighting the Italians in 1917, and then as a newly-appointed divisional commander against the French in 1940, is used to test the expression of in practice. Finally, this explores different command doctrines with case studies of two key armored battles: Amiens in August 1918 and Arras in May 1940.1 vol, 256 pgs 2019 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-220550 Barry Quintin COMMAND OF THE SEA: William Pakenham and the Russo-Japanese Naval War 1904-1905 Studies the Russo Japanese War of 1904-1905, as seen through the eyes of the British Naval Attache Captain William Pakenham. The complicated set of international relations at the turn of the century is reviewed, as well as the balance of sea power in the Far East, which was a matter of considerable importance to the British government. The role of the naval attache was thus of considerable importance, particularly once war had broken out. Includes 28 illustrations and six maps.

He sent a stream of comprehensive reports not only describing the naval actions but also dealing with crucial matters relating for instance to the design of warships, developments in gunnery and the use of torpedoes. These were closely studied at the British Admiralty, at a time when the revolutionary design of the new battleship Dreadnought was under consideration.1 vol, 264 pgs 2019 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-220560 Scotland, Tom A TIME TO DIE AND A TIME TO LIVE: Disaster to Triumph: Groundbreaking Developments in Care of the Wounded on the Western Front 1914-1918 Describes the tremendous progress was made in the treatment of wounded soldiers during the Great War which significantly improved chances of survival. It describes ground breaking advances in resuscitation, anesthesia and surgery which established the foundations of modern war surgery. It stresses the importance of blood transfusion. Includes 90 b/w photos, 8 b/w maps, and 25 tables.

In 1914, definitive management of wounds took place at base hospitals after a journey which sometimes took days. Resuscitation was practically non- existent, anesthesia was poor and surgical methods were hopelessly inadequate. Many soldiers developed catastrophic wound infections and died as a result of overwhelming sepsis when they should have survived.

Two pioneering surgeons challenged established doctrine and introduced new surgical methods against much opposition and hostility from clinicians who lacked vision to see beyond existing methods of treatment. Resuscitation and anesthesia were transformed as knowledge increased and by 1917 blood transfusion became very important in improving survival. From May 1918, Field Ambulance Resuscitation Teams were employed by Australian medical personnel to deliver resuscitation and surgery to wounded soldiers within a very short time, saving limbs and lives.1 vol, 256 pgs 2019 UK, HELION AND COMPANY
