Also includes tactics used in the 18th century and Napoleonic period as well as a chapter on the organization, flags, ships, uniforms, tactics and armament of the Ottoman river fleets.

1-220950 SPQR: Ancients Miniatures Rules Build a warband (lists for Imperial Rome, Dacia & Sarmatia, Iberia, Gaul, Caesar's Legions, Macedonia, Persia, Thebes, Sparta, and Athens) for scouting, raids, and other skirmish actions. Each warband features specialized scenarios to reflect its own tactics and methods of waging war. Includes 42 scenarios and campaign system.

1-220980 Hoffmann, Birgitta THE ROMAN INVASION OF BRITAIN: Archaeology Versus History Compares Roman Conquest of Britain from historical sources with the archaeological evidence, which is often contradictory. Archaeologists and historians all too often work in complete isolation from each other and this book hopes to show the dangers of neglecting either form of evidence. In the process, it challenges much received wisdom about the history of Roman Britain. Takes a number of major events or episodes (such as Caesar's incursions, Claudius' invasion, and Boudicca's revolt), presents the accepted narrative as derived from historical sources, and then presents the archaeological evidence for the same. Includes 16pp color plates, plus b/w maps and diagrams.

1-220970 Nolan, Roger JULIUS CAESAR'S INVASION OF BRITAIN: Solving a 2,000-Year-Old Mystery Julius Caesar came, saw and conquered southern Britain, but just where he landed and the precise routes his army marched through the south of the country have never been firmly established. Numerous sites have been suggested for the Roman landings of 55BC and 54BC, yet, remarkably, the exact locations of the first major events in recorded British history remain undiscovered - until now.

After years of careful analysis, Roger Nolan has painstakingly traced not only the places where the Romans landed, but he has also discovered four temporary marching camps Caesar's army built as it drove up from the south coast in pursuit of the British tribal leader, Cassivellaunus.

This advance took Caesar across the Thames to Cassivellaunus' stronghold at Wheathampstead in present-day Hertfordshire. These marching camps are placed almost equidistant from each other and, most importantly, are in a straight line between the coast and Wheathampstead.

Roger Nolan's research has also enabled him to identify the place mentioned in Caesar's Commentaries, where the Roman legions were ambushed by the British whilst foraging and where a large battle then ensued.1 vol, 176 pgs 2019 UK, FRONTLINE BOOKS

1-220960 Schmitz, Michael ROMAN CONQUESTS: The Danube Frontier The Roman conquests of Macedonia in the 2nd century BC led directly to the extension of their authority over the troublesome tribes of Thrace to the south of the Danube. But their new neighbor on the other side of the mighty river, the kingdom of the Dacians, was to pose an increasing threat to the Roman empire. Inevitably, this eventually provoked Roman attempts at invasion and conquest. It is a measure of Dacian prowess and resilience that several tough campaigns were required over more than a century before their kingdom was added to the Roman Empire. It was one of the Empire's last major acquisitions (and a short-lived one at that).

Dr. Michael Schmitz traces Roman involvement in the Danube region from first contact with the Thracians after the Third Macedonian War in the 2nd century BC to the ultimate conquest of Dacia by Trajan in the early years of the 2nd Century AD. Like the other volumes in this series, this book gives a clear narrative of the course of these wars, explaining how the Roman war machine coped with formidable new foes and the challenges of unfamiliar terrain and climate. Specially commissioned color plates bring the main troop types vividly to life in meticulously researched detail.1 vol, 224 pgs 2019 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-220951 Chartrand, Rene THE ARMIES AND WARS OF THE SUN KING 1643-1715: Volume 1 - The Guard of Louis XIV Volume 1 deals with the Sun King's early years, from his birth in 1638, the resounding victory of Rocroi when he was five and a child king, the unstable years of the Fronde civil wars, his seizure of absolute power in 1661, the initial foreign military adventures, and the French army's blitzkriegs of 1667-1668.

This is followed by a look at the command systems, short biographies of the senior officers, their own guards, their lifestyles and orders of chivalry. Closing with several chapters on the Royal Guard including their more mundane or obscure duties with their battle record, uniforms and material culture. Of the appendices, the largest is devoted to the opponent Spanish army of the 17th century. Includes about 200 illustrations, most in color, taken from contemporary sources joined by many works by now nearly forgotten 19th century eminent military illustrators such as Marbot, Titeu, Philippoteaux, and JOB.

As a bonus, each volume has five especially commissioned color plates of three figures each showing usually never before seen uniforms reconstructed from descriptions and three especially commissioned color plates showing colors and standards.1 vol, 246 pgs 2019 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-PWAR092 PAPER WARS: Issue 92: Pitt's War Pitt's War simulates the epic struggle between United Kingdom and France from the beginning of the French Revolution to the end of the French Empire at Waterloo (1792-1815) on a map with zones covering Europe and the Levant. Each turn is worth a year with a fair and a bad weather impulse. Combat units are multi step historical armies with elite corps and main generals. Includes 130 event markers to simulate easily the essence of that period.

One player controls the French forces and the other one controls United Kingdom and her allies to gain predominance over Europe. Because of the low density of counters and low complexity rules, players are able to end a full game in less than 10 hours for the full campaign. The game also provides two scenarios to cover the Republic period and the French Empire.

1-221010 Field, Andrew GROUCHY'S WATERLOO: The Battles of Ligny and Wavre This concluding volume of a study exploring the French perspective of the Waterloo campaign covers the final offensive the French victory over the Prussians at Ligny and Marshal Grouchy's pursuit of the Prussians and the battle at Wavre. Grouchy's extensive description of his operations forms the backbone of the narrative, supplemented by other French sources and those of Prussian eyewitnesses. Napoleon in his memoirs accused Grouchy, like Marshal Ney, of a series of failures in command that led to the French defeat, and many subsequent historians took the same line.1 vol, 336 pgs 2019 UK, PEN & SWORD
