1-221250 Lucas, James HITLER'S MOUNTAIN TROOPS Warfare in the mountains was unique - fighting in a vertical wilderness in which the objective of a nearby mountain peak meant a grueling descent into the valley and an exhausting ascent to the summit, often under fire and in grim weather conditions. Hence the Gebirsjaeger were tough and hardy men, often from the alpine regions of Germany - true 'mountain men' at home in the harsh conditions, an advantage that frequently won victories or facilitated escape where any other unit would have failed.

Gebirsjaeger Divisions fought in Poland in 1939, Norway in 1940, Greece in 1941, Yugoslavia in 1941, Crete in 1941, all over the Eastern Front starting in 1941, including the encirclement around Uman, Lappland from 1941 to 1945, the battles in the Caucasus in 1942-1943, the Volkhov Sector of the Battle of Leningrad in 1942-43, along the Western Front in 1944-45, and in Steiermark, Austria in 1945. Profusely illustrated with black and white photos and battle maps, and a thorough alphabetical index.1 vol, 256 pgs 1992 US, ARMS & ARMOUR

1-TPS01 Various TURNING POINT SIMULATIONS # 01: The Battle of Marathon The Battle of Marathon took place where, oddly enough, two armies confronted each other for FIVE days with almost no fighting, and Athenian democracy was put to the test as the Greek forces debated (and voted) whether or not to attack the Persians.

As to the battle itself, numbers are uncertain but we know the Greeks were heavily outnumbered. We know also that the two armies' fighting style and equipment were near opposites, with Greeks depending on shields, armor, and close-quarter fighting and Persians depending on missile weapons and skirmishing. It seems pretty clear that the Greek army ran (or advanced at speed) as soon as they got within bow range, to reduce the time they would endure arrows without being able to retaliate.

At under two hours of play time, you can make your own explorations into this battle without scheduling 'marathon game sessions' in order to play. With a mounted, full color 11' x 17' map and just over 175 unit counters, you'll be able to try various strategies and see what differences you can make on the outcome. Units activate by chit-pull per formations and combat includes both melee and ranged fire. Leadership and morale matter (in several ways) and combat results use step reduction and several levels of unit deterioration.

The game offers a historical set-up scenario plus variants for both set up and reinforcements. With the variants, it's possible that the Spartans may finally show up to the battle.

1-COM1067 Firer. John A PRAGMATIC WAR: The War of the Austrian Succession 1741-1748 - No Peace Without Spain System (Wargame) Pragmatic War: The War of the Austrian Succession 1741 - 1748 is a two-player game simulating the War of the Austrian Succession. One player represents the Austrian interest represented by the Austrians and those powers in Europe faithful to the original agreement, ('the Pragmatic Alliance'). The other player represents the challengers to the Austrians, the Bavarian rival for the Imperial title, Charles Albert and his supporters, primarily the Bourbon rulers of France and Spain, intermittently joined by Prussia (the Bourbons).

The war like its predecessor, the War of the Spanish Succession, was fought primarily to determine who would succeed to the throne of a great empire, in this case the Austrian Empire. When the current ruler of the Austrian crown lands and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles VI died without male issue he had laid the groundwork for his eldest daughter Maria Theresa to succeed to the Hapsburg crown lands.

Known as the 'Pragmatic Sanction,' this diplomatic effort obtained the agreement of the leading powers of Europe to her accession to the Hapsburg dominions and the election of her paramour as the next Holy Roman Emperor. However, with the opportunistic seizure of Silesia by the young Frederick the Great of Prussia, the agreement unraveled and the war began. In time, it would involve virtually all of Europe.

A Pragmatic War continues the series pioneered and excellently portrayed by Don Herndon's No Peace Without Spain! and expanded upon by Nine Years: War of the Grand Alliance 1688-1697. The basic NPWS system is ported to APW but expanded and adapted to include such period specific features as:

* Soldier-Kings (martial rulers) and their political-military effect upon operations
* Expanded opportunities for French sea power to influence the war
* Influence of historic British admirals
* Young Frederick the Great's opportunism
* Variable full belligerency by France, Britain and Holland
* Hungarian support for Maria Therese
* The advent of light troops (Insurrectionists and Genzers)
* The '45 and the potential for a seaborne invasion of England
* The Holy Roman Emperor and his effect on political-military affairs

1-221260 Zaloga, Steven and Madej, Victor THE POLISH CAMPAIGN OF 1939 Most accounts of the German invasion of Poland spout the same story: the Polish cavalry attacked the German armor with their lances and were slaughtered, the Polish Air Force was destroyed on the ground on the first day of the war, and the Polish defenders collapsed under the German weight.

All of these myths are wrong. The Polish air force was scattered deliberately before the war broke out, so that it would not -- and was not -- destroyed on the ground. Polish cavalry never attacked the Germans with horses. The story that the captured Polish cavalrymen rapped on the sides of German tanks, thinking they were cardboard, is a myth, invented by German propagandists and foisted on unsuspecting Italian journalists. The Poles held out for more than a month, despite crushing casualties.

All these facts -- and more -- are told in this book, along with detailed information on the Polish Army's order of battle, equipment, training, and battles. Readers will learn that the Polish cavalry used their horses as transport, were equipped with anti-tank rifles, and fought hard and well. The Polish air force was undone by the breakdown of its communications and loss of pilots and planes in battle, not destroyed on the ground. Vicious street fighting wore down elite German panzer divisions. The Poles showed they could fight and stand up to the German war machine.

All that has been forgotten, undeservedly so. This book makes it all real. It includes the movements of every division, their equipment, training, and tactics1 vol, 195 pgs 1985 US, HIPPOCRENE BOOKS

1-221340 Cutler, Thomas BROWN WATER BLACK BERETS: Coastal and Riverine Warfare in Vietnam The men of the US Navy's brown-water force played a vital but often overlooked role in the Vietnam War. Known for their black berets and limitless courage, they maneuvered their aging, makeshift craft along shallow coastal waters and twisting inland waterways to search out the enemy. In this moving tribute to their contributions and sacrifices, Tom Cutler records their dramatic story as only a participant could. His own Vietnam experience enables him to add a striking human dimension to the account. The terror of firefights along the jungle-lined rivers, the rigors of camp life, and the sudden perils of guerrilla warfare are conveyed with authenticity. At the same time, the author's training as a historian allows him to objectively describe the scope of the navy's operations and evaluate their effectiveness.

Winner of the Navy League's Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement in 1988 when the book was first published, Cutler is credited with having written the definitive history of the brown-water sailors, an effort that has helped readers better understand the nature of US involvement in the war.1 vol, 426 pgs 1988 US, BLUEJACKET BOOKS

1-221350 Pejsa, Arthur MODERN PRACTICAL BALLISTICS An authoritative book by Art Pejsa, pioneer Honeywell aerospace physicist, US Naval Academy math prof, and NRA rifle expert. Covers a wide range of informative topics including the basic fundamentals of physics, with a large glossary, and extensive ballistics tables.

A decade of original research by Pejsa has produced a set of new, simple but exact formulas and a method for do-it-yourself ballistics. Easy examples show how to calculate any of the data. A great text for an elementary course in exterior ballistics.

Treats most of the classical topics of ballistics. Mainly, however, it is a tutorial on a new, simplified method for accurate exterior ballistics computations. Using the author's new easy but virtually exact formulas, persons with high school math skills can calculate data more accurately than most published tables. It is the culmination of a decade of successful original research aimed at bringing ballistics analysis from the exclusive domain of a few experts.
