The last battleship to be commissioned by the USA, USS Missouri known as the 'Mighty Mo' acted as venue for the Japanese surrender in WWII. Brilliant simple and subtle rules for 2 to 20 players, covering multi-corps actions. Excellent step by step introduction for those new to Napoleonic wargaming, especially for those who think the period too complicated.

Playable one-on-one on a 2 foot-by-2 foot table in an hour or an afternoon-long game with 20+ players across 16-18 full-size 6x4-foot tables (visit the BlundersontheDanube blog for full game reports, maps, and OBs for the large, multi-player 'Campaign in a Day' games).

Two infantry stands form one unit (brigade). Morale based (no figure removal) for fog of war. Uses any basing system with common stand frontage. Play the Napoleonic battles and campaigns big or small that you've always dreamed of trying.

Rules review on Little Wars TV gave Snappy Nappy an '8' for playability (Tom) and a '9' for playability (Greg). Comprehensive review on LittleWarsTV website.

1-225500 Theotokis, Nikoloaos Airborne Landing to Air Assault - A History of Military Parachuting Covers the entire history of the use of the parachute in warfare over last 100 years or so. Adapting the parachute for military purposes occurred with extraordinary speed during WWI and by WWII, it had become an established technique for special operations and offensive actions on a large scale. The range of parachute drops and parachute-led attacks was remarkable, and the most dramatic examples from the world wars and lesser conflicts are recounted in this graphic and detailed study, along with evolution of techniques of air assault since 1970s. 1 vol, 272 pgs 2020 UK, PEN AND SWORD

1-225520 Harrell, John S The Nisibis War - The Defence of the Roman East AD 337-363 The war of 337-363 was an exception to the traditional Roman reliance on a strategic offensive to bring about a decisive battle. Instead, the Emperor Constantius II adopted a defensive strategy and conducted a mobile defense based upon small frontier (limitanei) forces defending fortified cities, supported by limited counteroffensives by the Field Army of the East. These methods successfully checked Persian assaults for 24 years.

However, when Julian became emperor, his access to greater resources tempted him to abandon mobile defense in favor of a major invasion aimed at regime change in Persia. Although he reached the Persian capital, Ctesiphon, he failed to take it, was decisively defeated in battle and killed. The Romans subsequently resumed and refined the mobile defense, allowing the Eastern provinces to survive the fall of the Western Empire. Includes strategic, operational, tactical, and logistical analysis of these campaigns and battles, highlighting their long-term significance.

1-225490 Powell, David Tullahoma - The Forgotten Campaign that Changed the Course of the Civil War, June 23 - July 4, 1863 July 1863 was a momentous month in the Civil War. News of Gettysburg and Vicksburg electrified the North and devastated the South. Sandwiched geographically between those victories and lost in the heady tumult of events was news that William S. Rosecrans's Army of the Cumberland had driven Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee entirely out of Middle Tennessee. The brilliant campaign nearly cleared the state of Rebels and changed the calculus of the Civil War in the Western Theater.

The campaign included deceit, hard marching, fighting, and incredible luck -- both good and bad. Rosecrans executed a pair of feints against Guy's Gap and Liberty Gap to deceive the Rebels into thinking the main blow would fall somewhere other than where it was designed to strike. An ineffective Confederate response exposed one of Bragg's flanks -- and his entire army -- to complete disaster. Torrential rains and consequential decisions in the field wreaked havoc on the best-laid plans.

Still Bragg hesitated, teetering on the brink of losing the second most important field army in the Confederacy. The hour was late and time was short, and his limited withdrawal left the armies poised for a climactic engagement that may have decided the fate of Middle Tennessee, and perhaps the war. Finally fully alert to the mortal threat facing him, Bragg pulled back from the iron jaws of defeat about to engulf him and retreated all the way to Chattanooga, the gateway to the rest of the Southern Confederacy.

1-223015 Edited by the Kure Maritime Museum and Kazushige Todaka; Translated by Robert D. Eldridge CRUISERS: Selected Photos from the Archives of the Kure Maritime Museum (The Japanese Naval Warship Photo Albums) Originally published in Japan in 2005, each album in The Japanese Naval Warship photo album series contains official photographs taken by the Kure Maritime Museum, as well as those taken by private individuals. These pictorial records document the main types of Japanese vessels, from battleships to submarines, based on the best images from Shizuo Fukui, a former Imperial Japanese Navy commander and technician.

These photos include the ones Fukui began collecting as a young boy and continued after he worked as a naval shipbuilder, and those that he was given in order to complete a photographic history of the Imperial Japanese Navy's ships, which include those gathered by Nagamura Kiyoshi, a shipbuilder who proactively collected photos, and the collection of machinist Amari Yoshiyuki. Moreover, with the help of shipbuilder Makino Shigeru, among others, Fukui was able to continue to gather photographs and other items throughout the postwar period. It is not an exaggeration, therefore, to say that Fukui dedicated his entire life to this work. These images are especially valuable because of the massive destruction of official documents at the end of the war. 1 vol, 264 pgs 2020 US, US NAVAL INSTITUTE PRESS

1-225480 Harrison, Richard editor The Russian Civil War, 1918-1921 - An Operational-Strategic Sketch of the Red Army's Combat Operations The Russian Civil War was one of the most fateful of the 20th century's military conflicts, a bloody three-year struggle whose outcome saw the establishment of a totalitarian communist regime within the former Russian Empire. As such, it commands the attention of the military specialist and layman alike as we mark the one hundredth anniversary of the war's end. 48 maps

This work is the third volume of the three-volume Soviet official history of the Russian Civil War, which appeared during 1928-1930, just before the imposition of Stalinist orthodoxy. While the preceding volumes focused on the minutiae of the Red Army's organizational development and military art, this volume provides an in-depth description and analysis of the of the civil war's major operations along the numerous fronts, from the North Caucasus, the Don and Volga rivers, the White Sea area, the Baltic States and Ukraine, as well as Siberia and Poland. It also offers a well-argued case for the political reasons behind the Bolsheviks' military strategy and eventual success against their White opponents.

And while it is a certainly a partisan document with a definite political bias, it is at the same time a straight forward military history that manages to avoid many of the hoary myths that later came to dominate the subject. As such, it is easily the most objective account of the struggle to emerge from the Soviet Union before the collapse of the communist system in 1991.
