1-218230 Lambshead, John ONE-HOUR SKIRMISH WARGAMES: Fast-play Dice-less Rules for Small-unit Actions from Napoleonics to Sci-Fi Many wargamers enjoy the challenge of skirmish games where, instead of the strategy of vast armies portrayed by traditional wargames, the focus is on the tactics of a small unit. However, skirmish rules are often so complex that it can take hours of rolling dice, consulting tables and recording data to recreate what would in reality be a fast and furious firefight lasting just minutes.

Now these new rules make it possible to recapture the speed and intensity of these actions where every man, and every second, counts. The basic rules are supported by sections which give special rules and scenarios to capture the flavor of a range of different periods, from Napoleonic to Modern Warfare and beyond with Sci-Fi.

From the 95th Rifles scouting for Wellington, Western gunfights, and WWI trench raids, through WW2 parachute assaults or Special Forces strikes in Afghanistan, or even Space Marines storming a space station, Squad Firefights elegantly simple system allows you to focus on proper tactical decisions rather than rolling buckets of dice or calculating masses of modifiers.1 vol, 120 pgs 2018 UK, PEN AND SWORD

1-218140 Viverito, Phil TANKS AND YANKS: Rules for WWI: 1917 to 1918 Tanks & Yanks is a rule system which focuses on the last two years of the Great War and offering an educational tool in understanding, in miniature, the tactics of the late war years. The booklet includes 104 pages of quotes, diagrams, and charts -- 14 pages of actual rules and the rest is period information from actual tactical manual diagrams, pictures, quotations, and vehicle data sheets. If nothing else, the book is a fine source for late WWI information on the armies of the Great War; includes a bibliography and on-line support.

The system can be used with either 15, 18, 25, or 28 mm figures. No special basing needed -- use individual stands or multiple-figure stands. Unit sizes are platoon level to battalion level with nine to 12 figures to a platoon, four platoons to a company, and three to four companies to a battalion. Model units for large battles use four or more tanks to a command. For smaller games, one or more tanks can be used. The rules have a very simple method of movement and casualty calculation for personnel and armor. Dice required are d6s and d10s.

System play is easy to learn and quick-you can play using just the Q.R.S. once you are familiar with the system. Tanks & Yanks has two Turn Sequences for initial set-up and deployment. Each turn has six turn Phases; 1) Simultaneous shooting/morale, 2) Assault/initiatives, 3) Movement, 4) Simultaneous shooting/morale (if not having fired in phase 1), 5) Hand to hand combat and 6) Consolidation. Command & Control is simple yet effective. Use it or lose it. Typical game time is two to four hours with two to eight players.

Ground & Air rules included. Test players have run dozens of scenarios to great success. Demonstration games of Tanks & Yanks at Siege of Augusta 2018 and Nashcon 2018 were very well received.1 vol, 104 pgs 2018 US, ON MILITARY MATTERS

1-968007 Konstam, Angus 007 SINK THE TIRPITZ: 1942-44 - The RAF and Fleet Air Arm Duel with Germany's Mighty Battleship When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941, Stalin requested help from the Western Allies. The result was the Arctic Convoys - the opening of a sea route from Britain to Northern Russia, used to supply the Soviets with vitally-needed war materials. This route passed close to German-occupied Norway, and so in January 1942 the newly-completed battleship Tirpitz - sister of the Bismarck - was sent there, to form the core of the naval force stationed in Northern Norway to intercept these convoys.

For more than two years, Tirpitz remained a latent threat to the Allies, and despite fuel shortages her occasional sorties posed a grave threat to Allied shipping. So, the sinking of the battleship became a major priority for the British. The fjords where she lurked were strongly-defended, rendering naval attack virtually impossible. So, unless she could be caught at sea, she had to be destroyed by other means.

In the spring of 1942 the Royal Air Force launched three heavy bombing raids on the battleship's anchorage, but no hits were scored. The following autumn she was damaged during a midget submarine attack, and moved to a more secure anchorage. A lack of bombers caused a hiatus in these air attacks, but they were resumed in 1944, by which time the Fleet Air Arm had the resources to join in the air campaign. The most sustained of these naval air operations was Operation Goodwood, but like the others, its results were disappointing. It was now clear that only heavy bombers dropping especially heavy bombs could do the job.

So, that autumn the RAF launched the first of three large-scale attacks using Lancaster bombers armed with enormous Tallboy bombs. In the first, code-named Operation Parvane, the Tirpitz was badly damaged. In the third air attack, carried out in November 1944, the battleship was hit three times, and she capsized and sank, taking most of her crew down with her. Her passing broke German naval power in Arctic waters.1 vol, 96 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-972037 Lai, Benjamin 037 CHINESE SOLDIER versus Japanese Soldiers: China 1937-38 In July 1937, the Marco Polo Bridge Incident sparked a bloody conflict between Chinese and Japanese forces that would rage across China and beyond for more than eight years.

The two sides' forces brought very different strengths and limitations to the conflict. In 1937 China was divided into factions, each controlled by warlords with independent forces, and there was no unified Chinese army. In order to fight the Japanese, Chiang Kai-shek, the nominal leader of Nationalist China, was compelled to do deals with these regional powers. For their part, the Japanese employed ground forces broadly comparable to those fielded by Western powers, including modern artillery and tanks.

Featuring specially commissioned artwork and drawing upon an array of sources, this study investigates the origins, training, doctrine and armament of the Chinese and Japanese forces who fought in the opening stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War.1 vol, 80 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-978089 Davies, Peter 089 B-52 STRATOFORTRESS vs SA-2 GUIDELINE SAM: Vietnam 1972-73 Ever since its introduction in the late 1950s, the B-52 Stratofortress has been the United States' primary heavy bomber and a powerful symbol of its immense military might. Its powerful electronic countermeasures equipment (ECM) was thought to make the B-52 immune to ground-to-air missile attack, but in Vietnam, and later conflicts such as Operation Desert Storm in 1991, it came up against the Soviet-designed SA-2 SAM which used heavy salvoes of missiles to bring down the bombers.

The losses of several of its most feared, powerful, and supposedly invincible bombers per night to a torrent of Soviet missiles during the closing stages of the Vietnam War was sobering to Americans, but the B-52s' crushing attacks virtually eliminated North Vietnam's defenses and forced a peace settlement. This fascinating book analyses the roles of the SA-2 operators and the B-52 Electronic Warfare Officers (EWOs) using specially commissioned artwork as well as first-hand accounts, and traces the cat-and-mouse tactics that each side employed.1 vol, 80 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-978088 Greentree, David 088 BRITISH DESTROYER versus GERMAN DESTROYER: Narvik 1940 The opening months of World War II saw Britain's Royal Navy facing a resurgent German navy, the Kriegsmarine. Following the German invasion of Denmark and Norway in early April 1940, British and German destroyers would clash in a series of battles for control of the Norwegian coast. The operational environment was especially challenging, with destroyer crews having to contend with variable weather, narrow coastal tracts, and possibility of fog and ship breakdowns.

In two engagements at Narvik, the Royal Navy entered the harbor and attacked the loitering German destroyers who had dropped off mountain troops to support the German invasion. The raids were devastating, halving at a stroke the number of ships at Hitler's disposal.

Employing specially commissioned artwork and drawing upon a range of sources, this absorbing study traces the evolving technology and tactics employed by the British and German destroyer forces, and assesses the impact of the Narvik clashes on both sides' subsequent development and deployment of destroyers in a range of roles across the world's oceans.1 vol, 80 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-995263 de Groot, Bouko 263 DUTCH NAVIES OF THE 80 YEARS' WAR: 1568-1648 The tiny new state of the United Provinces of the Netherlands won its independence from the mighty Spanish empire by fighting and winning the Eighty Years' War, from 1568 and 1648. In this long conflict, warfare on water played a much bigger role in determining the ultimate victor.

The fleet helped carve out a new empire, growing national income to such levels that it could continue the costly war for independence. Yet it was in coastal and inland waters that the most decisive battles were fought. Arguably the most decisive Spanish siege (Leiden, 1574) was broken by a fleet sailing to the rescue across flooded polders, and the battle of Nieuwpoort in 1600, the largest successful invasion fleet before World War II, was one of the most decisive battle in western history.

Using detailed full color artwork, this book shows how the Dutch navies fought worldwide in their war of independence, from Brazil to Indonesia, and from the Low Countries to Angola.1 vol, 48 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-996328 Drohan, Brian 328 IMJIN RIVER 1951: Last Stand of the Glorious Glosters After China's November 1950 intervention in the war and the subsequent battle of the Chosin Reservoir, UN forces faced a new onslaught in the spring of 1951 with over 350,000 veteran troops attacking along the Imjin River.

he US 3rd Infantry Division took the brunt of the attack along with the attached British 29th Infantry Brigade which included the Gloucestershire Regiment. The heroic defense of the American and British forces would pass into legend, most especially the doomed effort of the Glosters, as they sought to buy time for the rest of the UN forces to regroup and organize an effective defense of Seoul, the South Korean capital city.

Featuring full color commissioned artwork, maps, and first-hand accounts, this is the compelling story of one of the most epic clashes of the Korean War. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-996327 Winkler, John 327 PECKUWE 1780: The Revolutionary War on the Ohio River Frontier As the Revolutionary War raged on fields near the Atlantic, Native Americans and British rangers fought American settlers on the Ohio River frontier in warfare of unsurpassed ferocity. When their attacks threatened to drive the Americans from their settlements in Kentucky, Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, and other frontiersmen guided an army of 970 Kentuckians into what is now Ohio to attack the principal Native American bases from which the raids emanated.

This superbly illustrated book traces Colonel George Rogers Clark's lightning expedition to destroy Chalawgatha and Peckuwe, and describes how on 8 August 1780 his Kentuckians clashed with an army of 450 Native Americans, under Black Hoof, Buckongahelas, and Girty, at the battle of Peckuwe. 1-218150 Cole, Myke LEGION vs. PHALANX: The Epic Struggle for Infantry Supremacy in the Ancient World From the time of Ancient Sumeria, the heavy infantry phalanx dominated the battlefield. Armed with spears or pikes, standing shoulder to shoulder with shields interlocking, the men of the phalanx presented an impenetrable wall of wood and metal to the enemy. Until, that is, the Roman legion emerged to challenge them as masters of infantry battle.

Covering the period in which the legion and phalanx clashed (280-168 BC), covers tactics, arms, and equipment, organization, and deployment. Drawing on original primary sources to examine six battles in which the legion fought the phalanx -- Heraclea (280 BC), Asculum (279 BC), Beneventum (275 BC), Cynoscephalae (197 BC), Magnesia (190 BC), and Pydna (168 BC) - he shows how and why the Roman legion, with its flexible organization, versatile tactics, and iron discipline, came to eclipse the hitherto untouchable Hellenistic phalanx and dominate the ancient battlefield.1 vol, 288 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-218220 Stansfield, Stewart EARLY MODERN SYSTEMS OF COMMAND: Queen Anne's Generals, Staff Officers and the Direction of Allied Warfare in the Low Countries and Germany, 1702-1711 Hardback. Includes 13 color and b/w illustrations, two maps, and nine tables.

The Anglophone history of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14) in the Low Countries is dominated by military biographies of John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), and studies of the battles he fought. Yet while Marlborough exercised a profound influence as a statesman and general-operating as he did in a less flexible paradigm that could emphasize high-level actors at the expense of their subordinates-he did not direct his forces, or liaise with those of his allies, alone.

Throughout the conflict, Marlborough was variously aided, abetted, and disrupted by a number of general and staff officers. These officers provided the mechanism by which supra-regimental command was effected. While these individuals possessed military dignity according to their rank and station, their real authority in the army was in no small part drawn from the powers and duties delegated to them by the commander-in-chief, or assumed upon their own initiative. Clear chains of command in the modern form did not exist.

Such officers functioned not only as vital elements in their own army, but within the broader context of confederate warfare as a whole. They came from diverse backgrounds and possessed varying political affiliations, aspirations, and notions of duty. Their careers were governed as much by patronage and preference as any personal merit. A burgeoning sense of military duty was complicated by prejudice and the boundary between public and private endeavor was indistinct. Some officers gained wealth and financial security in the course of the war; others were ruined by the intrigues of themselves and others.

Early Modern Systems of Command explores the lives these individuals led on campaign and the nature of the apparatus of command they formed. Drawing upon a wealth of primary material-including sources hitherto unstudied-it examines topics as diverse as corruption, logistics, military justice and intelligence-gathering. Investigating not only the degree to which all actors, from the commander-in-chief down to his subordinate officers, were active in the decision-making processes of the campaign, but also the extent to which they contributed to the ongoing process of British and European military development.1 vol, 318 pgs 2018 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-218120 LA BATAILLE DE LUTZEN: 1813 In May of 1813, Napoleon began the campaign for Germany with a bang - as was his custom. The Prussian and Russian armies attempted to ambush the French main army strung out in road march. Their approach went undetected and they are able to close within two miles. In fact, not until the moment of their assault do the French become aware of them.

But, instead of the expected weak flank guard, they are met by the strong divisions of Souham and Girard and by mid-afternoon, Napoleon and 100,000 French and their allies have swarmed to their support. The battle raged in ever-mounting fury until night finally brought an end to the slaughter. The first major battle of the 1813 campaign ends with thousands of dead and wounded and with the Russian and Prussian armies in full retreat.

La Bataille de Lutzen simulates the first major clash of Napoleon's 1813 campaign. Lacking adequate cavalry and handicapped by a large number of raw recruits, the French player must rapidly consolidate his scattered forces to counter the sudden Allied attack. As the player commanding the Allied forces, you must deal the French a decisive blow before Napoleon can react and bring reinforcements to bear.

Lutzen is ideal for multiple players or solitaire study. Each turn represents 20 minutes of real time, and each hex equals 100 meters. The rules are the Lutzen version of the award winning system developed by the Marshall Enterprises Household and cover the full range of features characteristic of the Napoleonic battlefield. Players are faced with the same tactical dilemmas their historical counterparts faced, though play balance depends upon their own skill.

1-218130 LA BATAILLE DE DRESDE: 1813 1813, Austria ends its neutrality and enters the VIth Coalition against France. After joining contingents of the Russian and Prussian armies this new army marches north out of Bohemia nearly 200,000 strong. The army marches along the west bank of the Elbe into Saxony, its large lumbering columns stretched across the Erz mountains.

From where he has been pursuing enemy forces to the east, Napoleon sees this new threat aimed at his line of communications and the city of Dresden, the main supply depot for his army. Only a single French Corps stands in its way. Outnumbered nearly ten-to-one, it cannot hold. In a flurry of orders Napoleon redirects his guard and several corps to march to its rescue.

La Bataille de Dresde details the titanic battle that ensued on August 25th and raged through the 27th. Up to 4 players control the Prussian, Austrian and Russian forces commanded by Feldmarschall Carl zu Schwarzenberg, while up to a further four command such French personages as Marshals Ney, Marmont, Mortier, Victor, St. Cyr... or Napoleon, himself. Every battalion of infantry, squadron of cavalry or battery of artillery that was present at the battle is included... and are at their command.

1-930313 STRATEGY & TACTICS # 313: Windhoek: SW Africa 1914-15 Windhoek: The Campaign in German Southwest Africa, 1914-15 is a wargame of the campaign in which British Empire forces, mainly from the Union of South Africa, conquered the German colony of Southwest Africa. In the original campaign, the British won within 10 months, but the campaign could have gone different, as von Lettow Vorbeck demonstrated in German East Africa.

This is a two-player game, in which one side commands the Germans, and the other Allied forces (including South Africa, British and Portuguese colonial). The Allied player must win the game quickly, while the Germans win by delaying the Allies beyond the historical time frame. The central game mechanism is Action Points (AP). These are a quantification of each sides command and logistical capabilities. Players expend AP to recruit units and conduct various military operations. On the map each hex represents approximately 25 miles.

The encirclement of Paulus' Sixth Army in Stalingrad trapped a significant portion of the Wehrmacht's combat forces in the ruins of the devastated city, where they would ultimately die or be taken prisoner, but at the same time the entire German position was left in a catastrophic state.

The year's campaign had seen the Germans advance first east, but then increasingly to the south and southeast; the Soviet counter-offensive not only isolated Sixth Army, it also raised the possibility of the collapse of the entire front. The ultimate failure of the Red Army to achieve this is due in no small part to the efforts of one of the Wehrmacht's greatest commanders: Erich von Manstein, who rebuilt the German front line and fought a mobile campaign, in which all the strengths of the German forces, and all the weaknesses of their Soviet opponents, were revealed. 1 vol, 464 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-969009 Forsyth, Robert 009 DORNIER DO 335 The Dornier Do 335 was conceived as a high-speed, all-weather fighter, and represented the pinnacle of piston-engined aircraft design. The Do 335 was a big aircraft, weighing just over 10,000kg when laden with fuel, equipment, and pilot, yet powered by two Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines, it was capable of reaching a maximum speed of 750km/h at 6400 meters, making it the fastest piston engine aircraft produced in Germany during World War II.

Some 40 aircraft were built between late 1943 and the end of the war, and it was intended to deploy the type as a day fighter, bomber, night fighter, bad weather interceptor, and reconnaissance aircraft, all of which were intended to incorporate the latest armament, bomb sights, communications, and radar equipment, as well as an ejector seat. Featuring archive photography and specially commissioned artwork, this is the full story of the aircraft that the Luftwaffe hoped would turn the tide of the war.1 vol, 80 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

2-212350 Harrison, Richard THE BATTLE OF KURSK: The Red Army's Defensive Operations and Counter-Offensive, July-August 1943 Offers a peculiarly Soviet view of the battle. This study was compiled by the Red Army General Staff's military-historical directorate, which was charged with collecting and analyzing the war's experience, and issued as an internal document in 1946-47, but not published until 2006 and then heavily supplemented by commentary and other information not contained in the original. The present work omits these additions, while supplying its own commentary in places deemed necessary.

The book is divided into two parts, dealing with the defensive and offensive phases of the battle, respectively. The first begins with a strategic overview of the situation along the Eastern Front by the spring and summer of 1943 and the Soviet decision to stand on the defensive. This is followed by a detailed examination of the Central Front's efforts to counter the expected German attack out of the Orel salient, and the Voronezh Front's attempts to do the same against the German concentrations in the Belgorod-Kharkov area.

The rest of this section is devoted to an exceedingly detailed day-by-day, tactical-operational account of the struggle, particularly along the southern face of the salient, where the Germans came closest to succeeding.

The second part will be more of a revelation to the Western reader, who is likely to be more familiar with the defensive phase of the battle. Here the authors once again, in great detail, lay out the Red Army's preparations for and conduct of a massive counteroffensive to clear the Orel salient, which soon degenerated to a grinding struggle, which while ultimately successful, cost the Soviets dearly.

Likewise, the authors detail the Voronezh Front's preparations to reduce the Belgorod salient and seize the industrial center of Kharkov. This offensive, in conjunction with a simultaneous offensive in the Donets industrial region, pushed the German lines to the breaking point and set the stage for the follow-on advance to the Dnepr River and the eventual liberation of Ukraine.1 vol, 320 pgs 2018 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-218200 Harrison, Richard THE BATTLE OF MOSCOW 1941-42: The Red Army's Defensive Operations and Counter Offensive along the Moscow Strategic Direction New translation into English offers a detailed examination of the climax of Hitler's Operation Barbarossa. Includes 12 maps.

This work originally appeared in 1943, under the title 'Razgrom Nemetskikh Voisk pod Moskvoi' (The Rout of the German Forces around Moscow). The work was produced by the Red Army General Staff's military-historical section, which was charged with collecting and analyzing the war's experience and disseminating it to the army's higher echelons. This was a collective effort, featuring many different contributors, with Marshal Boris Mikhailovich Shaposhnikov, former chief of the Red Army General Staff and then head of the General Staff Academy, serving as general editor.

The book is divided into three parts, each dealing with a specific phase of the battle. The first traces the Western Front's defensive operations along the Moscow direction during Army Group Center's final push toward the capital in November-December, 1941. The study pays particular attention to the Red Army's resistance to the Germans' attempts to outflank Moscow from the north. Equally important were the defensive operations to the south of Moscow, where the Germans sought to push forward their other encircling flank.

The second part deals with the first phase of the Red Army's counteroffensive, which was aimed at pushing back the German pincers and removing the immediate threat to Moscow. Here the Soviets were able to throw the Germans back and flatten both salients, particularly in the south, where they were able to make deep inroads into the enemy front to the west and northwest.

The final section examines the further development of the counteroffensive until the end of January 1942. This section highlights the Soviet advance all along the front and their determined but unsuccessful attempts to cut off the Germans' Rzhev-Vyaz'ma salient. It is from this point that the front essentially stabilized, after which events shifted to the south.1 vol, 476 pgs 2018 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-218170 Jennings, Christian THE THIRD REICH IS LISTENING: Inside German Codebreaking 1939-45 Comprehensive account of the successes, the failures, and the science of Germany's code-breaking and signals intelligence operations from 1935 to 1945. This fast-moving blend of modern history and popular science is told through colorful personal accounts of the Germans at the heart of the story, including a former astronomer who worked out the British order of battle in 1940; a U-Boat commander on the front line of the Battle of the Atlantic; and the woman from the foreign ministry decrypting Japanese and Italian signals.

It investigates how and why a regime as technologically advanced as the Third Reich both succeeded, and failed, in its battle to break their enemy's codes and to use the resultant intelligence effectively, and why they failed to recognize the fact that the Allies had cracked the enigma code.1 vol, 336 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-963038 MODERN WAR # 38 Soyuz '81 Soyuz '81 is an intermediate low complexity two-player wargame covering the possibilities inherent within the first month of that never-run operation. The Soviet side encompasses all Soviet, East German and Czechoslovakian forces. The Polish side consists of that nation's regular army and state militia. Each hex represents 16 miles (26 km) from side to opposite side. Each turn represents one tenth of a month (approximately three days). Each unit of maneuver is a division. The game map covers Poland and the adjacent jump off areas for the Soviet Army.

The Soviet player is cast in the role of aggressor, attempting to make work a classic strategy of 'converging columns' advancing from around the periphery of Poland. His success or failure will be reckoned on his ability to bring that country to heel without having to expend an inordinate amount of military and political power to do it.
