1-215240 Chandler, John and Curry, John JOHN CANDLER'S (1964) MINIATURE WARGAMES: Napoleonic Wargaming du Temps de Napoleon Around the time Donald Featherstone published War Games in 1962, the book that was key in launching modern hobby wargames, others were publishing comprehensive sets of rules. This example by John Candler was published in the United States in 1964 and was one of the better known.

The original rules were published in a green ring binder, with 123 pages of detailed rules for a Napoleonic land and sea wargame. They covered all aspects necessary to play a detailed Napoleonic wargame on the tabletop. They were more complex than Featherstone's rules, but lacked the literary charm of the former. They are published by the History of Wargaming Project in order to preserve an example of early wargaming rules from the dawn of modern wargaming.1 vol, 120 pgs 2017 UK, JOHN CURRY EVENTS

1-215270 Goddard, Martin SPANISH CIVIL WAR: Bayonet and Ideology This is a set of rules specifically written for the Spanish Civil War, rather than an add-on to some other period. SCW is unique in many aspects, rather than WWII with less Tigers. Hence, this specialist set of rules. The rules are replete with company build lists, victory criteria, and war and battle sketch outline.

This game uses a square grid in the same manner as PBI. This means a square is either building, partial cover or not. By using squares it is clearer to the player what scenery the men are in, without fussing over trivial non important detail. Thus infantry can move into the farm(proper platoon commander's order) without being told to make sure you are behind the wall and facing the enemy MG(waste of time game mechanism).1 vol, 60 pgs 2017 UK. 1-978082 Dildy, Doug 082 B-29 SUPERFORTRESS vs KI-44 TOJO: Pacific Theater 1944-45 By the time the Americans began their aerial bombardment of Japan in 1944, both the JAAF and IJNAF were spent forces. What the Japanese did have though was the Ki-44 Tojo. Armed with two 40 mm cannon, it was the most heavily armed and feared single-seat fighter to see action against the new American bomber, the B-29 Superfortress. For the bomber crews, they had what they believed was their 'ace in hole': a fully armed B-29 carried four remotely operated gun turrets and a tail gunner's position, making it the world's most advanced self-defending bomber.

In every respect the Ki-44 pilots were fighting a desperate battle. Many who made their mark did so using suicidal ramming attacks or 'taiatari.' Illustrated with full-color artwork, this volume examines why the Ki-44 was unable to break up bomber formations conventionally during the Pacific War, and how its ramming tactics, while terrifying, graphically revealed Japan's inability to stop the B-29.1 vol, 80 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-995251 Stille, Mark 251 US NAVY ESCORT CARRIERS 1942-45 While not as famous as their larger and faster sister ships such as the Essex- and Yorktown-class carriers, escort carriers made an enormous contribution towards Allied victory both in the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. Rather than relying on size or speed, it was their sheer numbers that made them so effective. Indeed, the Casablanca-class escort carrier was the most-produced aircraft carrier in history.

In partnership with the Royal Navy, they provided the backbone of Allied anti-submarine efforts in the Atlantic, finally and irrevocably turning the tide of the war against the U-boats in 1943. In the Pacific, they provided the air cover for the series of landings which led to the doorstep of Japan by 1945. These robust ships faced submarine, air, and even surface threats from the Japanese, but proved able to contend with everything thrown their way.

Fully illustrated with contemporary photographs and unique specially commissioned artwork, this book shines a new light on these unjustly overlooked workhorses of the US Navy -- ships that helped usher in the Allied victory over the Axis powers in the Atlantic and Pacific.1 vol, 48 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-996314 Lardas, Mark 314 NASHVILLE 1866: From the Tennessee to the Cumberland In September 1864, the Confederate army abandoned Atlanta and were on the verge of being driven out of the critical state of Tennessee. In an attempt to regain the initiative, John Bell Hood launched an attack on Union General Sherman's supply lines, before pushing north in an attempt to retake Tennessee's capital Nashville.

This fully illustrated book examines the three-month campaign that followed, one that confounded the expectations of both sides. Instead of fighting Sherman's Union Army of the Tennessee, the Confederates found themselves fighting an older and more traditional enemy: the Army of the Cumberland. This was led by George R. Thomas, an unflappable general temperamentally different than either the mercurial Hood or Sherman. The resulting campaign was both critical and ignored, despite the fact that for eleven weeks the fate of the Civil War was held in the balance.1 vol, 96 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-996315 McCluskey, Allstair THE HINDENBURG LINE 1918: Haig's Forgotten Triumph From 26 September until 8 October 1918, the Allied armies in France launched their largest ever combined offensive on the Western Front of World War I. The British, French, American and Belgian armies launched four attacks in rapid succession across a 250km front between the Argonne and Flanders.

At the center of this huge assault the British, First, Third and Fourth Armies, led by Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, breached the formidable Hindenburg Line defenses and drove the Kaiser's Army from its last fully prepared defensive position west of the German border.

The impact of this defeat had a shattering effect on the Germans with their army admitting for the first time that an armistice was required to save it from annihilation. Although these decisive results were to a large extent consequences of the battle of the Hindenburg Line, the subsequent controversies over the conduct of the war meant that it went unheralded and has remained Haig's forgotten triumph.1 vol, 96 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-997220 Rottman, Gordon 220 EUROPEAN COUNTER-TERRORIST UNITS 1972-2017 The Munich Olympics massacre in 1972 was a shock awakening to the public. In the decades since, European countries have faced a wide range of threats from Palestinian and home-grown terrorists, to the more recent world-wide jihadists. The threats they pose are widespread from aircraft hijacking and political assassinations to urban warfare against security forces, and murderous attacks on civilian crowd targets, forcing governments have had to invest ever-greater efforts in countering these threats.

This book traces the evolution of police (and associated military) counter-terrorist forces across Europe over the past 45 years. Using specially commissioned artwork and contemporary photographs, it details their organization, missions, specialist equipment, and their growing cross-border co-operation.1 vol, 64 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

Maps were vital for commanders in drawing up plans of attack, and their detail and usefulness have increased over the centuries as the science of mapping has developed.

This beautiful book examines stunning original maps from a series of key conflicts from the Spanish Armada, the American Wars of Independence, and the Napoleonic wars to twentieth century conflicts from the First World War to Vietnam, and explains how they were represented through mapping and how the maps produced helped naval commanders to plan their strategy.1 vol, 192 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-215150 Clements, Eric USS CONSTITUTION: A Midshipman's Pocket Manual 1814 Launched in 1797, USS Constitution is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy. She is renowned for her actions during the War of 1812 against the Britain, when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British warships. The battle with HMS Guerriere earned her the nickname 'Old Ironsides' and a long-standing public adoration that has repeatedly saved her from scrapping. She continued to serve as flagship in the Mediterranean and African squadrons, and circled the world in the 1840s. Retired from active service in 1881, Constitution served as a receiving ship until designated a museum ship in 1907.

Comprising a series of documents and illustrations that give information on the building of the ship, her wartime service history and life on board ship during the years of her service, this fascinating book tells the story of Old Ironsides.1 vol, 144 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-215220 Anderson, M.S. THE WAR OF AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION: 1740-1748 Set in motion by the disputed succession of Maria Theresa and her husband to the lands and dignities of Emperor Charles VI, this series of major conflicts (1740-48) involved far more than just the fate of the Habsurgs. Soon, Austria, Prussia, France, Britain, Spain, Bavaria, Saxony, and the Netherlands were embroiled in their different but interlocking power struggles, with profound long-term significance for Europe and beyond.

The war marks the rise of Prussia to great-power status, and the opening of the struggle between France and Britain for maritime supremacy and colonial empire in North America, the Caribbean and India. This book examines the war and its consequences in their widest context.1 vol, 260 pgs 1995 LONDON, ROUTLEDGE PRESS

1-SS10245 Doyle, David SR-71 BLACKBIRD: In Action Lockheed produced the A-12 to meet the CIA's need for a high-altitude, high-speed surveillance aircraft with a low radar cross-section. In May 1967 the first Blackbird flew over Vietnam. When the CIA retired the A-12 from Vietnam in June 1968, its place was taken by the Air Force version of the plane with the now more familiar name of 'Strategic Reconnaissance' SR-71.

During the Vietnam War, SR-71 overflights averaged one per day, during which time the enemy unsuccessfully fired 800 surface-to-air missiles against it. In addition to the A-12 and SR-71, Lockheed also turned out the M-21, to launch D-21 drones.

Another version, the YF-12, was tested as a high-altitude interceptor but never made it to series production. Uncover the once top-secret history of the famous Blackbird through this all-new 80-page book, packed with detailed line drawings and over 200 photographs. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2017 US, SQUADRON/SIGNAL

1-215160 Anderson, Thomas STURMGESCHUTZ: Panzer, Panzerjager, Waffen-SS and Luftwaffe Units 1943-45 First established in 1940, the Sturmgeschutz assault guns were purpose-built vehicles intended to support the infantry during the phase of attack and breakthrough of enemy positions. During the eastern campaign the Sturmgeschutz proved to be potent tanks destroyers, able to reliably defeat even T-34 and KV heavy tanks. Cheaper and quicker to produce than the German Panzers, it was deployed widely and with great success forming an integral part of armored units, particularly in the final desperate days of the war when tank production could not keep up with the needs of the war effort.

Drawing on original material from German archives and private collections, and replete with over 200 images, this book tells the thrilling story of the Wehrmacht's unsung workhorse in the final years of World War II.1 vol, 272 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-215210 Cleaver, Thomas PACIFIC THUNDER: The US Navy's Central Pacific Campaign, August 1943-October 1944 On 27 October 1942, four Long Lance torpedoes fired by the Japanese destroyers Makigumo and Akigumo exploded in the hull of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8). Minutes later, the ship that had launched the Doolitte Raid six months earlier slipped beneath the waves of the Coral Sea. Of the pre-war carrier fleet the Navy had struggled to build over 15 years, only three were left: Enterprise, that had been badly damaged in the battle of Santa Cruz; USS Saratoga (CV-3) which lay in dry dock, victim of a Japanese submarine torpedo; and the USS Ranger (CV-4), which was in mid-Atlantic on her way to support Operation Torch.

For the American naval aviators licking their wounds in the aftermath of this defeat, it would be difficult to imagine that within 24 months of this event, Zuikaku, the last survivor of the carriers that had attacked Pearl Harbor, would lie at the bottom of the sea. Alongside it lay the other surviving Japanese carriers, sacrificed as lures in a failed attempt to block the American invasion of the Philippines, leaving the United States to reign supreme on the world's largest ocean.

This is the fascinating account of the Central Pacific campaign, one of the most stunning comebacks in naval history as in 14 months the US Navy went from the jaws of defeat to the brink of victory in the Pacific.1 vol, 296 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-215230 Doyle, David CLEVELAND TANK PLANT: Aircraft and Military Vehicle Production at Cleveland Plant 2 (1942-1970) Built during WWII to construct B-29s, the facility originally known as Fisher Aircraft Plant 2 instead produced the ill-fated XP-75A Eagle fighter, as well as countless components for the B-29, supplying subassemblies to Boeing, Bell and Martin. Closed following WWII, the outbreak of war in Korea recalled the plant to service, but with an entirely new purpose. Reopened as the Cleveland Tank Plant, the massive 1.7 million square foot plant was retooled in 1951 to produce the M41 Walker Bulldog and the M42 Duster.

Through the succeeding years, the plant also churned out the M56 Scorpion, M114 Reconnaissance Vehicle, M108 and M109 self-propelled howitzer, the M551 Sheridan, and even the revolutionary MBT-70 tank. Through its life, the Cleveland Tank Plant was operated by Cadillac, Chrysler and Allison.

Explore the rich history of not only the Cleveland Tank Plant, but also its products and their wartime use, as well as the intricacies of armored vehicle production in general. 1-972028 MnNab, Chris 028 GERMAN SOLDIER vs SOVIET SOLDIER: Stalingrad 1942-43 By the end of the first week of November 1942, the German Sixth Army held about 90 per cent of Stalingrad. Yet the Soviets stubbornly held on to the remaining parts of the city, and German casualties started to reach catastrophic levels.

In an attempt to break the deadlock, Hitler decided to send additional German pioneer battalions to act as an urban warfare spearhead. These combat engineers were skilled in all aspects of city fighting, especially in the use of demolitions and small arms to overcome defended positions and in the destruction of armored vehicles. Facing them were hardened Soviet troops who had perfected the use of urban camouflage, concealed and interlocking firing positions, close quarters battle, and sniper support.

This fully illustrated book explores the tactics and effectiveness of these opposing troops during this period, focusing particularly on the brutal close-quarters fight over the Krasnaya Barrikady (Red Barricades) ordnance factory.1 vol, 80 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-969005 Brookes, Andrew 005 TSR2: Britain's Lost Cold War Strike Jet The TSR2 is one of the greatest 'what-if' aircraft of the Cold War, whose cancellation still generates anger and controversy among aviation fans. It was a magnificent, cutting-edge aircraft, one of the most striking of the Cold War, but fell victim to cost overruns, overambitious requirements, and politics. Its scrapping marked the point when Britain's aerospace industry could no longer build world-class aircraft independently. After the demise of TSR2 the RAF's future jets would be modified US aircraft like the Phantom and pan-European collaborations like Tornado and Typhoon.

In this book the eminent air power analyst and ex-Vulcan bomber pilot Andrew Brookes takes a fresh, hard-headed look at the TSR2 project, telling the story of its development, short career and cancellation, and evaluating how it would have performed in Cold War strike roles as well as in the recent wars in the Middle East.1 vol, 88 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING
