This book is about some of the key innovations in wargaming. It includes chapters on:

* Designing Wargaming Rules
* The Hunt for Weapons of Mass Destruction: A Committee Game
* An Introduction to Kriegsspiel by Paddy Griffith
* A Naval Kriegsspiel by Paddy Griffith
* TEWTS Tactical Exercises Without Troops
* Space Invaders on the Rhine: A Hall Game
* Hijack! An anti-terrorism wargame

WARGAMING IN HISTORY Vol. 3: ACW Five Battles
Includes Gettysburg; Brandy Station, Barlow's Knoll, Sickles' Folly, and Pickett's Charge.

Illustrated throughout in color. This series is now well understood as one of the major classics of wargaming history. As with the two previous volumes, Gettysburg provides a detailed study of the actual battle and then uses the military challenges of important phases of the battle to create a series of wargames. In this case Fire & Fury Regimental rules are used and the scale, because of the volume of troops involved, is 15mm. The result gives much food for thought, especially the significance of artillery on the second day.1 vol, 160 pgs 2011 UK, KEN TROTMAN

WARGAMING IN HISTORY Vol. 12: KONIGGRATZ
Fully illustrated throughout with color photos, maps, and full orders of battle. Examines the Battle of Koniggratz on 3rd July 1866, where the Prussians inflicted a devastating defeat on the Austrians, effectively ending the Seven Weeks War in one day and establishing Prussia in the front rank of European Powers.

Analyses the battle in great detail, and then describes a wargame of the entire battle on one board, as well as wargaming three key areas of the battle: The Holawald, where the Prussians were checked; Problus, where Austria's Saxon allies hung on, and the Swiepwald, where disobedient Austrian commanders threw away a quarter of the army's strength, thereby losing the battle.

Examines a plausible 'What If' alternative battle on the Austrian right, which could have avoided disaster, had the commanders followed their orders. It questions the received wisdom on the causes of the defeat and offers the performance of the key personalities. The book includes photos of the 150th Anniversary Re-enactment of the battle.1 vol, 204 pgs 2016 CAMBRIDGE, KEN TROTMAN

WARGAMING IN HISTORY Vol. 6: FIRST BULL RUN 1861 THE CAMPAIGN, UNION MILLS FORD, HENRY HOUSE HILL
The authors examine the very birth of the American Civil War (a prelude to a more detailed study of Stonewall Jackson to come), pointing out the huge possibilities that First Bull Run offers because of its nature as an encounter between amateur armies led by inexperienced officers. This study of the historic battle is peppered with color photographs (including a whole chapter on the battlefield today), stunningly good maps, and detailed orders of battle.1 vol, 184 pgs 2012 UK, KEN TROTMAN

WARGAMING IN HISTORY Vol. 10: THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY 1862
THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY 1862: JACKSON'S VALLEY CAMPAIGN, KERNSTOWN, McDOWELL, FIRST WINCHESTER, CROSS KEYS AND PORT REPUBLIC.

As usual illustrated throughout in color with color maps and wargame photos, orders of battle etc. 2014. The latest volume in the series goes to one of the most fruitful of campaigns to wargame, Jackson's most famous series of battles in the Shenandoah Valley. In characteristic way the authors have not put pen to paper or soldier to table without the most thorough first-hand research of the ground, allowing them to tackle the real deciding issues of the campaign, such as the stone wall at Kernstown, the exhaustion of Schenck's troops at McDowell, Jackson moving in the wrong direction approaching Winchester, the gang of slaves who saved the day at Port Republic, the supply problems that dictate the campaign, and more.

As with previous volumes, this 'staff ride' doubles as a major history of the campaign and a state-of-the-art wargaming study.1 vol, 204 pgs 2014 UK, KEN TROTMAN

WARGAMING IN HISTORY Vol. 8: The Austro-Prussian War of 1866 - The Campaign in Bohemia
As usual, illustrated throughout with color maps and wargame photos. Includes detailed orders of battle. In this volume on the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, the authors provide a detailed and highly informed history of the opening battles with the usual overwhelmingly impressive wargames covering Gitschin, Trautenau, Nachod, and Skalitz.

These are fought with Fire & Fury rules, carefully amended (with suitable authority!) for the armaments of the period. These amendments are included as well as orders of battle, wargaming orders of battle, studies of the battlefields today, and another crop of superb uniform plates by Bob Marrion.1 vol, 202 pgs 2012 UK, KEN TROTMAN

WAR GAMES:Battles and Manoevers with model soldier
The success of Donald Featherstone's first wargaming book was responsible for launching the modern hobby of warganming into the civilian market. It contained an introduction to the hobby, how to set up a wargames campaign and three sets of rules. The book contained three sets of classic wargaming rules.
Tony Bath's Ancient Wargaming Rules
Donald Featerstones' own American Civil War rules
Lionel Tarr's World War II Rules.
This revised edition includes:
A foreword by Paddy Griffith
The full Lionel Tarr Wargaming rules
A timeline of wargaming
This book is the first of a series of classic wargaming books.
I was delighted to be asked to produce a revised edition of this book as part of the History of Wargaming Project to bring it to a new audience.

BATTLES WITH MODEL SOLDIERS: An Introduction to Wargaming
Second edition published by the History of Wargaming Project.

Written for the newcomer to the hobby of wargaming, i discusses how armies can be assembled and how, on any reasonably sized table, engagements can be fought by tactical maneuvering. The basic rules by which forces are moved and casualties assessed are explained.

The book then goes onto to give a brief overview of the different wargaming periods and includes some simple rules and a detailed description of an American Civil War battle on the table top. The book was well received when first published and still has a charm that will appeal to the modern wargamer. 1 vol, 216 pgs 2015 UK, JOHN CURRY EVENTS

WARGAMING COMMANDO OPERATIONS AND REFLECTIONS ON WARGAMING Vol 2
Originally rejected by the publisher, this book has finally been brought into print by the History of Wargaming Project.

The Commandos were one of Britain's elite fighting forces during World War II. They were responsible for raids; ranging from strategic importance down to minor attacks.

Part One is an introduction to the Commandos, their history, training and equipment. It also covers previously unpublished material on a planning a raid, an attack on a gun battery in 1942 and a beach assault in 1944.

Part Two includes three previously unpublished sets of Featherstone rules, three scenarios, and recollections from early wargamers about some early commando wargames with Donald Featherstone and Lionel Tarr. One of the scenarios is for a platoon level solo game of a raid on a gun position.

Part Three is Don Featherstone's reflections on a lifetime of wargaming, the media and being at war. 1 vol, 150 pgs 2013 UK, JOHN CURRY EVENTS

WARGAMING IN HISTORY Vol. 9: THE SEVEN YEARS WAR - LOBOSITZ, REICHENBERG, PRAGUE AND KOLIN
As usual, illustrated throughout in color: color maps, orders of battle, 13 superb color uniform plates (almost entirely by Bob Marrion), this time of 7 Years War heavy cavalry. Some very meaty battles here each with their own set of challenges, some new rule changes (particularly covering the first volley & introducing Converged Grenadier regiments), the usual meticulous background account of what actually happened, plus the further exploits of the troops of the VFS & Lorraine round out the new offering. 1 vol, 204 pgs 2012 UK, KEN TROTMAN

REFIGHTING HISTORY VOLUME 1: SEVEN YEARS WAR - FIGHTING WITHDRAWALS
Refighting History is a new series of wargame books by Charles S Grant. In this series Charles describes historical actions, provides the detail of the forces involved and the preparation to bring the actions to the wargame table. Each refight is then described both in words and pictures. These will include not only famous larger battles but also smaller actions which can be achieved with modest wargame forces.

In addition to the battles and games Charles will include sections on tactics, troop types and the development of his own armies. The series will aim to bring research, real scenarios, lots of pictures and the fun of wargaming to the reader. So with Volume 1 looking at Seven Years War small action, specifically fighting withdrawals, we are set to begin Refighting History.1 vol, 112 pgs 2013 UK, PARTIZAN PRESS

REFIGHTING HISTORY VOLUME 2: THE WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION - Mollwitz, Chotusitz and Sahay
Having covered some relatively small actions in Volume 1, Volume 2 examines three larger battles from the First Silesian War of the War of the Austrian Succession.

* Mollwitz is covered with an excerpt from The War Game describing how it was first fought back in 1968. The battle is then revisited with quite different results.

* Chotusitz includes an unusual twist.

* Sahay is a most interesting action.

Also, this contains an update on Charles Grant's wargame armies and a section on battlefield maneuver in the mid-18th C and its implications for wargaming. 1 vol, 136 pgs 2016 UK, PARTIZAN PRESS

WARGAMING IN HISTORY Vol. 2: War of Austrian Succession 1740-1748
Deals with three battles: Dettingen, Fontenoy, and Lauffeld. Two are fought twice, in different ways, so in all, five wargames are described. One of these is also examined using smaller unit sizes for those who do not have large units of miniature soldiers.

Additional material has been brought together at the end. There is a chapter that deals with the
'Wild Geese' (the Irish) and the Scots in French service, including 16 color plates by
popular military artist Bob Marrion. There is also a chapter of wargame miscellany, with a number of sections which relate to the wargame aspects of monarchs on the battlefield, written orders, allies and alliances and elite troops.1 vol, 190 pgs 2010 UK, KEN TROTMAN

BORDER RAID: Pillage in Procrastor
We have now arrived at the sixth mini campaign book dealing with the fictitious wars of the Grand Duchy of Lorraine and the Vereinigte Freie St?dte (VFS). For those that have followed the history of the conflict between these two adversaries this book follows on from the Attack on the Junger. However the activities are only loosely connected to the previous campaign and the book stands on its own.

I have become increasingly conscious that a large number of my campaign battles require significant wargame armies. These are not within every wargamer's reach. In the last book, Attack on the Junger, I quite deliberately included two small actions and in the last Wargaming in History I focused on Seven Years War small actions. Following on in this vein Border Raid is very much about a mini campaign with small forces and small actions.

This campaign is completely different from those described in previous books. The previous books have led the readers and players through number of set piece scenarios. The actions that took place in this campaign were not pre-planned but created by the orders and actions of the players involved. They have been described here and could be replayed. However, dozens of quite different actions might be the result of fighting this campaign.1 vol, 80 pgs 2015 UK, PARTIZAN PRESS

EVERY BULLET HAS ITS BILLET A Guide to Wargaming the Late 17th Century
This period saw the birth of regular armies and navies for most major European powers. Massive battles were fought on land and at sea from the frozen winters of Scandinavia to the searing summer heat of North Africa. Alliances were agreed, broken and remade and thrones changed hands in the name of religion and the pursuit of power.

This guide provides the kind of information wargamers require to take the step into one of military history's most colourful eras. It offers overviews of the main conflicts and outlines major, minor, and unusual battles.

Covers how to create and paint your troops, information on uniforms and flags, which regiments fought where, the evolution of tactics and battlefield doctrines, and information on the legendary commanders who created them is all included.

The book is designed to act as a reference source and is not aligned with any particular rule set. Includes 108 color photos, 9 b/w illustrations, and 4 color maps.1 vol, 124 pgs 2020 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

JOHN CANDLER'S (1964) MINIATURE WARGAMES: Napoleonic Wargaming du Temps de Napoleon
Around the time Donald Featherstone published War Games in 1962, the book that was key in launching modern hobby wargames, others were publishing comprehensive sets of rules. This example by John Candler was published in the United States in 1964 and was one of the better known.

The original rules were published in a green ring binder, with 123 pages of detailed rules for a Napoleonic land and sea wargame. They covered all aspects necessary to play a detailed Napoleonic wargame on the tabletop. They were more complex than Featherstone's rules, but lacked the literary charm of the former. They are published by the History of Wargaming Project in order to preserve an example of early wargaming rules from the dawn of modern wargaming.1 vol, 120 pgs 2017 UK, JOHN CURRY EVENTS

THE STRELTSY - Russia's First Standing Forces 1500 to 1705
The Russian streltsy had a short, interesting, and later troubled history. Known as Orthodox 'old believers' that resented and refused western traditions, they were Russia's first permanent standing infantry with firearms - and this shows in their name, which roughly translates from the Russian word for 'shooter.' Created by Ivan the Terrible, this armed force was never disbanded, even in times of peace. Soldiers served for life, and they were nicknamed as 'stirrup' troops because they were usually always near the tsar's own stirrups. Often wielding both a musket and a poleaxe, they were a destructive force in Russia's army in the 16th and 17th centuries - fighting often behind a 'walking city' of wooden frames against forces such as the Tartars. However, their staunch believe in rejecting western ideology caused them to alienate themselves from Peter the Great, slaughtering his mother's family and dubbing him the Anti-Christ, ultimately leading to a failed rebellion and their complete dissolution from the Russian Army by 1720.

The author of this book dives into the history of the streltsy, their outfits, and their weaponry; he presents images of what remains of streltsy flags; as well as showcases both flat and 3D miniatures of the streltsy in wargaming. Fifty pages of color plates and illustrations.1 vol, 74 pgs 2023 US, ON MILITARY MATTERS LLC

A WARGAMER'S GUIDE TO THE BATTLE OF LEIPZIG 1813: The Battle of Nations
Describes the strategic situation in central Europe in 1813 and offers an account of the historical battle with detailed orders of battle, scaled-down orders of battle for game purposes, maps of the historical events, stylized maps for laying out wargames tables, and instructions for each scenario and the mini-campaign. Design notes explain the rationale and historical background to the scenario instructions. Includes eight b/w illustrations, 33 color photos, nine maps, and 12 tables.

The scenario maps are set out on square grids for ease of setting up tabletop terrain. Any set of wargames rules for the period should be able to be used to play the scenarios. The key points for the game army lists are the number of units and their quality. There is a section that discusses the quality of the troops of the various nations involved.

A discussion of the historical battle raises questions about the decisions made by the actual commanders. These can be explored by the wargame commanders, for example by their allocation of forces to different sectors (within historical constraints), their deployment within those sectors, or timing their use of reserves.

Was Napoleon's defeat inevitable? Wargaming is a form of counter-factual history, and the guide includes a variation which may answer the question, 'What if Napoleon had recalled the Dresden garrison?' Napoleon had agreed with Marshall St. Cyr that it would be madness to leave his 50,000 men in Dresden rather than concentrate French forces for the decisive battle Napoleon was seeking. What if Napoleon had not changed his mind?

The battle took place over several days (14-19 October 1813 including the battle of Liebertwolkwitz), and divides into distinct phases and sectors. This guide helps wargamers refight the battle on a table top with model soldiers, either as one large battle (suitable as a club game), or a series of smaller battles covering the different sectors. The smaller battles can be played as individual games or linked together in a mini-campaign, the latter giving strategic dilemmas for each of the commanders to resolve.1 vol, 140 pgs 2022 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

BATTLE IN AFRICA:1879-1914
Second edition is edited by John Curry as part of the History of Wargaming Project series of books.

Battle in Africa is a uniquely vivid analysis of colonial campaigning in the late-Victorian and Edwardian eras. Edited by Paddy Griffith, the author Howard Whitehouse guides the reader systematically through each stage of an African campaign, from the formulation of strategy to the fate of the wounded, and from the collection of supplies to the tactics of guerrilla warfare. He also offers a long-overdue comparative approach, which describes the Belgian, German, and Italian experiences as well as the better-known French and British ... and he gives a rare emphasis to the perceptions of the indigenous African 'enemy'. Illustrated throughout by Peter Dennis - who is himself a keen student of these campaigns - in an appropriately 'period' style.

RED STAR WHITE EAGLE RUSSO-POLISH WAR 1920: Designer Edition
Red Star White Eagle: The Russo-Polish War, 1920, Designer Signature Edition, marks the return of a true wargaming classic by David Williams, remastered and updated with this all-new, supersized edition. Celebrated by many as one of the finest and often sought-after game titles ever produced by Game Designers' Workshop (GDW, 1979) on a fascinating, almost forgotten conflict that would determine the course of European history for the next 20 years or more. Red Star White Eagle is yet another Classic Reborn! by Compass.

Red Star White Eagle is an operational level simulation that recreates the 1920 conflict over the border areas of Eastern Europe. Game play offers open maneuvering as both sides seek the opportunity to outflank and attack. Nearly any defensive line can be bypassed in the wide-open expanse of West Russia, forcing players to probe for vulnerabilities and seize the initiative. An exhaustive Order of Battle helps capture the key historically facets of the campaign including supply, cavalry charges, armored trains, loss of command, inter-front cooperation, rail nets, railroad reserve, flotillas and marines, border garrisons, numerous specialized units, and more.

This Designer Signature Edition provides a fully updated treatment to the GDW 1979 release that honors the original game design. All aspects of the game are being enhanced-rules, charts and tables, map, counters-based on years of player experience and feedback. It has been supersized to feature a larger playing surface (two maps) and larger 5/8-inch counters.

Play time can vary with three scenarios provided and the Campaign Game. While suitable for solitaire play and designed as a two-player game, the Campaign game is credited as allowing for up to three players (with two playing the Russian side). This edition serves as the ultimate treatment in paying homage and celebrating the original classic design by David Williams.

Product Information: Complexity: 6 out of 10; Solitaire Suitability: 8 out of 10; Time Scale: Weekly turns; Map Scale: 14 miles (23 kilometers) per hex; Unit Scale: regiment to division; Players: one to three, best with two; Playing Time: three to eight hours.

Held at the British Army Staff College in 1974, this ground-breaking wargame was a serious piece of academic research to explore a contested area of military history. Paddy assembled a team of subject matter experts from Britain and Germany to run a wargame to explore what would have happened if the Germans had launched their planned invasion of Britain. To umpire and play in the game, he used combat veterans with senior command experience, including some who were involved in 1940 -- including Luftwaffe Gen. Adolf Galland.

This describes the game, including previously unpublished material such as briefings, analysis, guidance for umpires, and post-game reflections. 'The resulting analysis of the Sealion Wargame is the most authoritative assessment yet produced of the prospects for this titanic and consequential hypothetical struggle.' -- Peter Perla.

BLOCKING KAMPFGRUPPEN PEIPER: The 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the Battle of the Bulge
This a superb book for generating scenarios for wargaming WWII. Excellent situation maps.

In December 1944 an enormous German army group crashed through the thin American line in the Ardennes forest. Caught by surprise, the Allies were initially only able to throw two divisions of paratroopers to buttress the collapse-the 82nd Airborne, which was rushed to the area of St. Vith, and the 101st, which was trucked to Bastogne.

After their successful campaign in Holland, Colonel Reuben Tucker's elite 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment was resting and refitting in France when news came of the German breakthrough. Most dangerous to the Allies was the German spearhead of the 1st SS Panzer Division led by Jochen Peiper, which aimed to sever the Allied front. The 504th was committed to block the SS advance, and within 48 hours of their arrival Colonel Tucker's paratroopers were attacking the SS-Panzergrenadiers of Peiper's battlegroup, eventually forcing them to withdraw.

More ferocious fighting ensued as follow-up German units forced a US retreat from St. Vith. In adverse weather conditions against the German 9th SS Panzer and 3rd Fallschirmjager Divisions, the 504th lived up to it's regimental motto -- Strike and Hold. Although some rifle companies were whittled down to less than 50 paratroopers, the Americans doggedly fought on until victory was achieved.

Moving quotations of letters to the next-of-kin provide insight into the impact of their deaths both on the battlefield and homefront.

In this work Van Lunteren provides a fascinating, close-in view of the 504th PIR during the Battle of the Bulge as well as its gallant sacrifice. Using never before published diaries, letters, battle reports and interviews with over 100 veterans, a comprehensive account is painted of a triumphant US regiment in one of the fiercest fought campaigns in the history of the US Army. 1 vol, 368 pgs 2015 UK, PEN & SWORD
