Shadrach Byfield was to serve his entire period in the army with the 41st Regt in Canada. For much of this period, it was heavily involved in fighting the Americans in the war of 1812.

The fighting was largely fought in wooded areas in hilly terrain, difficult of access, often only reachable by boat along the rivers and Great lakes, but it was also a war fought at close quarters and often with great savagery, and not just by the Indians.
