by Kraus, Jurgen

1-215060

This richly-illustrated book about the military flags of Bavaria from the beginnings of the Ducal Army being in the 16th century to the end of the Royal Army in 1919. Includes 600 photos and illustrations.

The beginnings of the history of the flag are in the Landsknecht banners for the short-lived army contingents of the 16th century. Only the actual history of Bavarian field characters begins with the large army armor of the thirty years war (1618-48). That Bayern played a special role as a champion of the Catholic war party here, a great variety of religious symbols on the flags symbolically expressing.

Since the 17th century, the flag image was always marked by the blue and white colors of the House and the coat of arms of the Wittelsbach dynasty. To a change in the symbolism of the ruling elector entered with each change of Government. Because every change of ruler put the flags on his stamp, they always offered a vivid mirror image for the political transformation of this epoch.

The development of flags and standards in the context of the organization of the army is traced on the basis of traditional pieces of real and figurative representations, whose outlining certain Yes furnish with flags. Within the time periods, the field characters are separately dealt with after the arms, connected with references to their fates in campaigns or their whereabouts. Also the flag ribbons generously conferred in the 19th century and War Awards occupy a wide area.

Other sections discuss the importance of finally, which flags in the course of time as symbols in the army had their religious elevation flag orders, their role in the military life and its function as a tactical character in the fight. In this broad range the band about a pure history of field characters of the Bavarian army reaches far beyond: he gives an impressive image for three centuries Bavarian symbol and country history.
