Russia launched a massive, multi-front land, air, and sea attack against Ukraine on February 24, 2022. It targeted Kyiv in the north and other key cities in the east and south, expecting a quick victory.

However, the Ukrainians mounted a fierce defense of their country, deploying old and new technology combined with creative tactics and information warfare. Backed by covert NATO assistance, Ukraine repelled the initial onslaught and, by April 26, had stalled Russia's advance and pushed it out of the northern front, effectively bringing the first phase to a close.

This Factbook covers the first six weeks of the largest European conflict since World War II. Compiled with the most up-to-date information available on the war, this guide is designed to help lay readers understand the conflict's historical roots and the military technologies and developments of that first phase. It's also intended to serve as a useful handbook for journalists, military members, teachers and students, wargamers, and other interested readers.
