When the US entered WWII, FDR recognized a need for small wooden ships to supplement steel ships. Stockton, California, shipyard built wooden salvage ships, rescue tugs, minesweepers, patrol craft sweepers, and net-laying ships that went off to war and collectively earned 38 battle stars and one Presidential Unit Citation. Contains 159 photographs, maps, and diagrams; appendices; and an index to full names, places, and subjects.
