Discusses the first half of the Atlanta Campaign with historic accounts and photographs, as well as post-war and modern images. Covers extant trenches, rifle pits, redoubts, and other fieldworks. Also covers the battlefields and surviving historic structures, monuments, and cemeteries that commemorate the campaign.
The first half of the campaign, from May to mid-July, can be defined as a war of maneuver, referred to as the 'Red Clay Minuet.' Though there were a number of sharp, bloody engagements during this phase of the campaign, but combats were limited. The second volume discusses how Johnston's repeated retreats and loss of terrain as commander of the Confederate Army of Tennessee after led to his replacement by Hood.
