He served as a captain on Imperial Airways' prestigious New York-Bermuda service and ended up saving several passenger lives during a crash. Then he was transferred to the West Africa run, where he was tasked with ferrying General de Gaulle back to the UK from Nigeria. Later, he was promoted to a Boeing flying boat.
