by Alderson, Mark
1-247310

Recruited by Imperial Airways in 1933, he was then selected to fly Lord Willingdon, the Viceroy and Governor General of India, on his farewell tour of India. Alderson wanted to 'fly boats,' and it was not long before he had joined these venerated ranks on the new route to South Africa. He served as a captain on Imperial Airways' prestigious New York-Bermuda service and ended up saving several passenger lives during a crash. Then he was transferred to the West Africa run, where he was tasked with ferrying General de Gaulle back to the UK from Nigeria. Later, he was promoted to a Boeing flying boat.
