The Battle of Anghiari, fought between the Milanese troops of Filippo Maria Visconti and the Florentine army supported by papal and Sforza contingents, proved immensely important for the city of Florence. Florence finally freed itself from the Milanese threat that had oppressed the city and all of Tuscany. Looks at the literature and art that commemorated the victory, such as the fresco of the battle painted by Leonardo da Vinci in Florence in 1504, now unfortunately lost; as well as the painted front panel of a Florentine cassone, created shortly after the mid-fifteenth century. The military heraldry represented allows for the precise identification of the infantry and cavalry of the opposing armies. Contains 12 color plates, 87 black and white illustrations, 11 black and white photos, 5 black and white maps, and 3 tables.
