War of the Austrian Succession

1-216250 MOLLWITZ and CHOTUSITZ: Battles of the First Silesian War Wargame. Two battles in one box:

The latest installment of the BAR series contains the first two battles of Frederick the Great's career as he began to forge his legacy as the greatest general of his generation. But be aware, this is not the Prussian Army of the Seven Year's War!

At Mollwitz (April 10, 1741) King Frederick II has been outmaneuvered by FM Neipperg. The plodding Prussians must advance over snowy fields to assault the waiting Austrian infantry and escape the entrapment. The Austrian player, with superior cavalry, must use that cavalry to slow down or distract the Prussian infantry before they devastate their Austrian counterparts. Each side has their strengths (and weaknesses) and must seek to maximize them to their benefit before time runs out. And, there is always the possibility that Frederick will flee the battlefield...

At Chotusitz (May 17, 1743), the Austrian army under Prince Charles has again outmaneuvered Frederick and hopes to annihilate the isolated part of his army. The pressure is on as the Austrians must attack quickly before the bulk of the Prussian army arrive as reinforcements. This is a finely matched battle with the Austrians as the attackers!

Both battles are one map in size with less than the usual number of counters. Chotusitz is roughly the size of the BAR game of Lobositz whereas Mollwitz has only 2/3 of the counters of Chotusitz. 1 vol, 1 pgs 2018 US, CLASH OF ARMS

It would also end up as a naval disaster in British history and allow the Spanish to maintain its dominions in the Americas for another 70 years. 1-COM1067 Firer. John A PRAGMATIC WAR: The War of the Austrian Succession 1741-1748 - No Peace Without Spain System (Wargame) Pragmatic War: The War of the Austrian Succession 1741 - 1748 is a two-player game simulating the War of the Austrian Succession. One player represents the Austrian interest represented by the Austrians and those powers in Europe faithful to the original agreement, ('the Pragmatic Alliance'). The other player represents the challengers to the Austrians, the Bavarian rival for the Imperial title, Charles Albert and his supporters, primarily the Bourbon rulers of France and Spain, intermittently joined by Prussia (the Bourbons).

The war like its predecessor, the War of the Spanish Succession, was fought primarily to determine who would succeed to the throne of a great empire, in this case the Austrian Empire. When the current ruler of the Austrian crown lands and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles VI died without male issue he had laid the groundwork for his eldest daughter Maria Theresa to succeed to the Hapsburg crown lands.

Known as the 'Pragmatic Sanction,' this diplomatic effort obtained the agreement of the leading powers of Europe to her accession to the Hapsburg dominions and the election of her paramour as the next Holy Roman Emperor. However, with the opportunistic seizure of Silesia by the young Frederick the Great of Prussia, the agreement unraveled and the war began. In time, it would involve virtually all of Europe.

A Pragmatic War continues the series pioneered and excellently portrayed by Don Herndon's No Peace Without Spain! and expanded upon by Nine Years: War of the Grand Alliance 1688-1697. The basic NPWS system is ported to APW but expanded and adapted to include such period specific features as:

* Soldier-Kings (martial rulers) and their political-military effect upon operations
* Expanded opportunities for French sea power to influence the war
* Influence of historic British admirals
* Young Frederick the Great's opportunism
* Variable full belligerency by France, Britain and Holland
* Hungarian support for Maria Therese
* The advent of light troops (Insurrectionists and Genzers)
* The '45 and the potential for a seaborne invasion of England
* The Holy Roman Emperor and his effect on political-military affairs

1-215520 Johnston, Arran ON GLADSMUIR SHALL THE BATTLE BE! The Battle of Prestonpans 1745 In the summer of 1745, a charismatic (but inexperienced) young Prince sailed to Scotland - determined to wrest the crowns of Great Britain from the head of George II. In a few short weeks, he raised an army large enough to challenge the government's forces in Scotland and, against the odds, stormed to a shocking victory over them at the Battle of Prestonpans.

Celebrated ever since in song and art, Prestonpans nevertheless proved to be a false dawn on the road to defeat at the Battle of Culloden seven months later, but without his victory at Prestonpans and all the opportunities it provided, Charles Edward Stuart ('Bonnie Prince Charlie') could never have invaded England and his short uprising would then have been but a footnote in the history of Georgian Britain. Includes 25 black and white illustrations and 13 maps.

This book pieces together the events of the Prestonpans campaign and focuses on the week of the battle. Uses eyewitness testimonies and close scrutiny of the evidence presented to the Board of Inquiry in 1746 to understand the buildup to the battle from an individual, as well as strategic, level. Such an understanding is revealed as critical, as the effects of morale, landscape, and personality are shown to have determined the fate of the battle far more than the relative power of broadsword and bayonet.

The book opens with an exploration of the battlefield area prior to the Rising, before analyzing the political and military strengths and weaknesses of the opposing causes, including information on the career of Sir John Cope. After following the opening campaign in the Highlands, the reader is then taken on a detailed day-by-day journey through the week leading to the battle.

The account of the engagement itself - driven by eyewitness testimony and contemporary evidence - also incorporates the latest archaeological analysis of the site to create the most detailed and engaging presentation yet of this famous and dramatic event. Its aftermath and legacy, both on a local and national level, is then considered before the book concludes with a look at the changes which have occurred across the battlefield landscape up to the present day. 1 vol, 232 pgs 2017 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-206471 Wilson, David THE FRENCH WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION 1740-1748 - Volume 1: Organisation, Uniforms & Equipment Another nicely done Partizan Press uniform guide. Thicker than most at 300 pages.

Provides accurate information for the French army during the War of the Austrian Succession and as such it is relevant to that time frame. The uniforms were basically same from the late 1720's till after the Seven Years War (except for the addition of lapels to infantry uniforms in the late 1750's).

They took a more austere appearance following the clothing regulations of 1730's, which reflected both moral ideals against ostentation with just a little bit of economy -- the heavy embroidery on the officers coats, the colored waistcoats and breeches disappeared, except in the foreign units, but then again, the regulations were never completely respected. 1 vol, 300 pgs 2014 UK, PARTIZAN PRESS
