1-666100 LA GUERRA DE GRANADA (II): The Siege of Malaga and Reconquest 1488-1492 During the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, a fleet of Castilian and Aragonese ships under a single command descended on the Malaga coast seeking a conclusion of the long process of reunification in the Iberian peninsula.

The siege of a place like Malaga, whose garrison was reinforced by Muslims arrived from North Africa, required the crusaders to close its port and devote a large army to surround the walled perimeter. The logistics work that led to victory was remarkable and included transportation by land and sea of the essential parts of artillery gunpowder coming aboard ships from Barcelona and Sicily.

The experience gained would be very useful during the harsh siege of Baza, which ended with the first snows of winter 1489. They were also years of raids and skirmishes, including Hernando del Pulgar's night raid in the capital of the Muslim emirate. 1 vol, 110 pgs 2014 SPAIN, ALMENA

1-66687 LA BATALLA DEL SALADO 1340 The Battle of Rio Salado, also known as the Battle of Tarifa (30 October 1340) was a battle of the armies of King Afonso IV of Portugal and King Alfonso XI of Castile against those of sultan Abu al-Hasan Ali of Morocco and Yusuf I of Granada.

After his defeat at the Battle of Teba in 1330, Mohamed IV of Granada sent to Abu Hasan for help in maintaining his survival. Hasan sent a fleet and an army that landed at Algeciras in 1333. These set about helping the Granadan King to capture the Castilian outpost of Gibraltar, which he did after less than two months. They then conducted a limited campaign to reunite these territories to the realm of Granada. Back in Morocco, Abu Hasan amassed his biggest army to undertake an invasion of Castile with the intention of undoing the previous century's Christian advances.

This invasion was a final attempt by the Marinids to set up a power base in the Iberian Peninsula. The Marinids had mobilized a vast army and, after crossing the Strait of Gibraltar and defeating a Christian fleet at Gibraltar, proceeded inland to the Salado River near Tarifa, where they met the Christians. 1 vol, 110 pgs 2012 ITALY

1-66680 Abad, Ruben Saez La Batalla de Muret 1213 At the Battle of Muret on 12 September 1213 the Crusading army of Simon IV de Montfort defeated the Catharist, Aragonese and Catalan forces of Peter II of Aragon, at Muret near Toulouse

Simon de Montfort led an army of 870 French Crusaders, along with a small contingent of knights brought by his ally, the viscount of Corbeil. Simon de Montfort's 870 mailed cavalry included 270 knights, making the small force of exceptional quality. King Peter of Aragon had brought 800 to 1,000 Aragonese cavalry, joined by a militia from Toulouse and armies brought by the counts of Comminges and Foix. King Peter of Aragon's combined forces possibly numbered 4000 cavalry, with thirty to forty thousand infantry.

Montfort divided his army into three squadrons, and then led them across the Garonne to meet the Aragonese forces. Peter's ally and brother-in-law, Count Raymond, advised a defensive posture in order to weaken the advancing enemy with bowshot and javelins. Peter rejected this suggestion as unknightly and dishonorable. King Peter rode to the front line, forsaking his royal armor for the plain armor of a common soldier. His army was disorderly and confused. When Montfort's first squadron charged the field, the Aragonese cavalry was crushed and Peter himself was unhorsed. He cried out, 'I am the king!' but was killed regardless. With the realization that their king had been killed, the Aragonese forces broke in panic and fled, pursued by Montfort's Crusaders. 1 vol, 110 pgs 2012 ITALY

1-243391 Abercrombie, Gordon Ellyson THE HOSPITALLER KNIGHTS OF SAINT JOHN AT RHODES 1306-1522 First of a series of volumes on the Hospitaller Knights of Saint John, this volume covers the rise of the Hospitaller Knights from monastic origins to military prowess, shedding light on their pivotal role in Crusades and Mediterranean power dynamics. Draws on the work of the Order's official historians, Giacomo Bosio and his successor Bartolomeo dal Pozzo. Transcribes their writings for the modern reader, while also presenting new information revealed in the 400 years of scholarship since Bosio's death in 1627.

This volume opens with Hospitaller relocation from Cyprus to Rhodes during the years 1306 to 1309 while introducing other entities wielding power in the Eastern Mediterranean, including Mamluk Egypt, Turkish beyliks emerging from disintegration of the Seljuk Empire, the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire, Cyprus itself, and not least, the Republic of Venice controlling most Aegean islands. Brings to light the contributions of Hospital leaders (Grand Masters) as well as of lieutenants, allies and opponents, including those of Philippe Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, who became Grand Master in 1521. 1 vol, 464 pgs 2024 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-202610 Bachrach, David S WARFARE IN TENTH-CENTURY GERMANY Over the course of half a century, the first two kings of the Saxon dynasty, Henry I (919-936) and Otto I (936-973), waged war across the length and breadth of Europe. Ottonian armies campaigned from the banks of the Oder in the east to the Seine in the west, and from the shores of the Baltic Sea in the north, to the Adriatic and Mediterranean in the south.

In the course of scores of military operations, accompanied by diligent diplomatic efforts, Henry and Otto recreated the empire of Charlemagne, and established themselves as the hegemonic rulers in Western Europe.

This book shows how Henry I and Otto I achieved this remarkable feat, and provides a comprehensive analysis of the organization, training, morale, tactics, and strategy of Ottonian armies over a long half century. Drawing on a vast array of sources, including exceptionally important information developed through archaeological excavations, it demonstrates that the Ottonian kings commanded very large armies in military operations that focused primarily on the capture of fortifications, including many fortress cities of Roman origin.

This long-term military success shows that Henry I and Otto I, building upon the inheritance of their Carolingian predecessors, and ultimately that of the late Roman empire, possessed an extensive and well-organized administration, and indeed, bureaucracy, which mobilized the resources that were necessary for the successful conduct of war. 1 vol, 0 pgs 2012 US, BOYDEL & BREWER

1-209030 Baker, Darren WITH ALL FOR ALL: The Life of Simon de Montfort Like his crusading father before him, Simon de Montfort's combination of charisma, determination and fearlessness, reinforced by a wife with similar qualities, made him one of the greatest men of his age. This biography follows his life from his birth and upbringing in France until his defeat and death at the hands of the future Edward I. The pivotal year was 1264, when Montfort captured Henry III in battle, established a constitutional monarchy and, in the act he is most famous for, revolutionized the representation of Parliament, the future Commons. While calling him the founder of that institution begs too much, Montfort recognized and cultivated a new awakening in national identity and political awareness not seen since before the Norman Conquest two centuries earlier.

Henry's long reign of fifty-six years saw many changes taking place in England and on the Continent, most strikingly the rise of humanism and power politics, and Montfort's entree to the courts of Paris and Rome was instrumental in his rebellion against the king. Not for another four hundred years, until the advent of Oliver Cromwell, would England see a revolution led by a figure of comparable stature. 1 vol, 336 pgs 2015 UK, AMBERLEY

1-226210 Baker, Darren CRUSADERS AND REVOLUTIONARIES: De Monfort One of the families that dominated the thirteenth century were the de Montforts. They arose in France, in a hamlet close to Paris, and grew to prominence under the crusading fervor of that time, taking them from leadership in the Albigensian wars to lordships around the Mediterranean. They marry into the English aristocracy, join the crusade to the Holy Land, then another crusade in the south of France against the Cathars. 30 color illustrations

The controversial stewardship of Simon de Montfort (V) in that conflict is explored in depth. It is his son Simon de Montfort (VI) who is perhaps best known. His rebellion against Henry III of England ultimately establishes the first parliamentary state in Europe.

The decline of the family begins with Simon's defeat and death at Evesham in 1265. Initially they revive their fortunes under the new king of Sicily, but they scandalize Europe with a vengeful political murder. By this time it is the twilight of the crusades era and the remaining de Montforts either perish or are expelled. Eleanor de Montfort, the last Princess of Wales, dies in childbirth and her daughter is raised as a nun. 1 vol, 240 pgs 2020 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-223940 Ballard, Richard England, France and Aquitaine - From Victory to Defeat in the Hundred Years War This is a narrative history of England and France during the Hundred Years War, from the triumphs of Henry V to the defeat of the English and loss of Gascony and Bordeaux - a huge blow to English prestige and economic interest.

This is a military history with technical detail, linked to high politics, courtly intrigue, dynastic ambition, and economic interest (wine trade and Bordeaux). The story revolves around the death of two Kings, Henry V of England, soon after his military triumphs, and Charles VI of France, in 1422. Both had historic claims to the 'French fiefs'. Henry was succeeded by Richard II, and Charles was succeeded by Charles VII. The contrast could hardly have been greater between Richard, a diffident, scholarly and religious figure, in an age when kings were expected to be aggressive leaders and military commanders; and Charles - an able politician, soldier and, in modern parlance, a 'hard man', who embodied the 15th century concept of kingship.

Intermittent but constant warfare continued until English defeat in 1476 and the loss of Gascony and Bordeaux, and the Peace of Picquigny brought to an end a decisive episode in the Hundred Years War, foreshadowing England's future total withdrawal from France.

1-238020 Barnby, David and John Leftwich 1066: The Lost Hastings Battlefield Recounts Duke William of Normandy's invasion of England to wrest the kingship from Harold Godwinson from initial landing to the final battle of Hastings. Argues that the traditional battleground is incorrect and claims the actual battle was on Blackhorse Hill on the high ridge some two miles east of the traditional site at Battle Abbey.

Relies upon the several historic accounts and the placing of events, carefully matching them to the terrain described there with the topography of the area. Uses satellite imagery to confirm the location of the old Cinque port of Hastings (first proposed by Nick Austin in his Secrets of the Norman Invasion), the site of Duke Williams's pre-battle camp. The author has analyzed the relative distances from the old port to the Battle Abbey site and the Blackhorse Hill site to eliminate the former and confirm the latter. 1-193210 Barratt, John War for the Throne: The Battle of Shrewsbury 1403 Henry IV, who had overthrown and probably murdered his predecessor Richard II, fought a protracted and bloody campaign against the most powerful nobles in the land. This war is the subject of John Barratt's gripping study.

The Percy family, the 'Kings of the North', and their most famous leader Sir Henry Percy -- 'Hotspur', whose fiery nature and military prowess were immortalized by Shakespeare -- stood out against Henry's rule. And the beleaguered king also had to contend with a range of other unrelenting opponents, among them Owain Glyn Dwr, who led the Welsh revolt against English supremacy.

In this graphic account of the first, deeply troubled years of Henry IV's reign, John Barratt concentrates on the warfare, in particular on the set piece pitched battles fought at Homildon Hill, Pilleth and Shrewsbury. His story brings to life the embittered politics and the personal and family enmities that gave rise to armed conflict. And he describes in vivid detail the tactics and fighting methods of the day, which were dominated by the devastating power of the English longbow. 1 vol, 160 pgs 2010 UK, PEN & SWORD BOOKS

1-227620 Bennett Connolly, Sharon DEFENDERS OF THE NORMAN CROWN: Rise and Fall of the Warenne Earls of Surrey Tells the fascinating story of the Warenne dynasty, of the successes and failures of one of the most powerful families in England, from its origins in Normandy, through the Conquest, Magna Carta, the wars and marriages that led to its ultimate demise in the reign of Edward III. Includes 20 color illustrations and plates.

In the reign of Edward I, when asked Quo Warranto - by what warrant he held his lands - John de Warenne, the 6th earl of Surrey, is said to have drawn a rusty sword, claiming 'My ancestors came with William the Bastard, and conquered their lands with the sword, and I will defend them with the sword against anyone wishing to seize them'.

John's ancestor, William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, fought for William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. He was rewarded with enough land to make him one of the richest men of all time. In his search for a royal bride, the 2nd earl kidnapped the wife of a fellow baron. The 3rd earl died on crusade, fighting for his royal cousin, Louis VII of France.

For three centuries, the Warennes were at the heart of English politics at the highest level, until one unhappy marriage brought an end to the dynasty. The family moved in the highest circles, married into royalty and were not immune to scandal. 1 vol, 288 pgs 2021 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-56550 Bradbury, Jim MEDIEVAL SIEGE, THE In medieval warfare, the siege predominated: for every battle, there were hundreds of sieges. Yet the rich and vivid history of siege warfare has been consistently neglected.
Jim Bradbury's panoramic survey takes the history of siege warfare in Europe from the late Roman Empire to the 16th century, and includes sieges in Byzantium, Eastern Europe and the areas affected by the Crusades. Within this broad sweep of time and place, he finds, not that enormous changes occurred, which might have been expected, but that the rules and methods of siege warfare remained remarkably constant.

His narrative of the main events of siege warfare includes adetailed study of some of the major sieges -Constantinople and Chateau-Gaillard, among others - and also presents evidence relating to the development of siege weapons and siege warfare.
A history of sieges necessarily brings the people caught up in them, besieger and besieged, clearly before the reader; stories from chronicles and letters of danger, famine, endurance and heroism reach out with an immediacy that provides a powerful human context for this study. 1 vol, 378 pgs 1998 UK, BOYDEL & BREWER

Labeled the 'Prince of Turncoats' because of his frequent changes of allegiance, his remarkable career offers us a fascinating insight into one of the most turbulent periods in English medieval history. Wenlock is a major figure in his own right and records in vivid detail how this shrewd nobleman navigated his way through the brutal conflicts of his times.

Wenlock served in Henry V's military campaigns in France in the 1420s before moving on to a career in the royal households of Henry VI, Margaret of Anjou, and Edward IV. As a diplomat, he led multiple embassies to Burgundy and France and, in addition to the kings he served, he was closely connected with other notable figures of the age such as Richard Neville, earl of Warwick. But Wenlock's speciality was on the battlefield - he took part in many raids, skirmishes, sieges, and three major battles -- including the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471 where he lost his life. 1 vol, 224 pgs 2022 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-972016 Campbell, David 016 TEMPLAR KNIGHT vs MAMLUK WARRIOR 1218-50 Step into the violent world of the 13th century, where the European states of the Levant battled with Muslim powers for control of Jerusalem. At the cutting edge of the conflict were the elite fighting men of the Crusader and Egyptian armies -- the Knights Templar and Mamluk warriors, respectively.

The Knights Templar were the most famous and formidable of all the Western Christian military orders, whilst the Mamluks were a slave caste whose fighting prowess had elevated them to the point of holding real political clout, threatening their Ayyubid masters who relied on them so desperately for military success.

This book draws on the latest research to tell the story of three key engagements from the Fifth Crusade to the Seventh Crusade. It reveals the extraordinary ferocity with which these holy wars were fought, and how the combats between Knights Templar and Mamluk warriors came to shape the political future of the region. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2015 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-972024 Campbell, David 024 LONGBOWMEN vs CROSSBOWMEN: Hundred Years' War 1337-60 For centuries, the crossbow had played a key role on the battlefields of continental Europe, with mercenaries from Genoa and Brabant in particular filling the ranks of the French army. Yet on the outbreak of the Hundred Years' War, they came up against a more powerful foe. To master the English longbow was a labor of years, requiring far greater skill to use than the crossbow, but it was much more flexible and formidable, striking fear into the French and their allies.

This study examines three battles - Sluys (1340), Crecy (1346) and Poitiers (1356) - and shows how the use of the longbow allowed England's armies to inflict crushing defeats on numerically superior forces. The longbow changed the shape of war, becoming the defining weapon of the age and wreaking havoc upon the French armies that would face it. Featuring full-color artwork, this is the engrossing story of the first clashes between the English longbowmen and the crossbowmen of the French king on the bloody battlefields of the Hundred Years' War. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2017 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

1-66695 Canales, Francisco NAJERA 1367: Castilian Civil War The Battle of Najera, also known as the Battle of Navarrete, was fought on 3 April 1367 between an Anglo-Gascon army and Franco-Castilian forces near Najera, in the province of La Rioja, Castile. The English were led by Edward, the Black Prince, and John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, allied with Peter of Castile (sometimes called Peter the Cruel) against his brother Henry of Trastamara (Spanish: Enrique II).

Peter and Henry had been in armed conflict, the Castilian Civil War, for some time before the intervention of foreign powers was sought. Peter begged assistance from the Black Prince in Bordeaux to restore him to his throne. James IV of Majorca also agreed to support Peter.

With 24,000 men, the Anglo-Gascon army marched south from Aquitaine and crossed the river Ebro at Logrono. They took control of the fortified village of Navarrete and continued towards Najera to face Henry's Franco-Castilian army, the latter's strength being 60,000. Despite the large size of his army, Henry's commander, Bertrand du Guesclin, was later reported to have been reluctant to face the English in a pitched battle, but he was overruled.

The battle began with the English longbowmen gaining dominance over the French archers. Then, the English vanguard, led by Sir John Chandos and the Duke of Lancaster, attacked the French mercenaries commanded by Du Guesclin and Arnoul D'Audrehem.

The Castilian cavalry, under heavy arrow fire from the English longbowmen, fled early, leaving Henry's battle exposed to attack from the mounted English. The Franco-Castilian army disintegrated and retreated, pursued by the English, back to the bank of the river Najerilla. Du Guesclin was captured, but Henry escaped and fled.

Peter and the English completely routed Henry and the French, inflicting heavy losses. Unlike at other battles of the Hundred Years' War, at Najera it was the English who were attacking dismounted French troops. As with many other battles of the period, the English longbow proved a significant advantage. However, the battle was of dubious long-term significance as Peter and the Black Prince fell out over money, and Peter was not able to maintain his rule for long without foreign support. 1 vol, 110 pgs 2014 SPAIN, ALMENA

Outmaneuvered by the Turkish sultan, Alp Arslan, Romanus was forced to give battle with only half his troops near Manzikert. By the end of that fateful day much of the Byzantine army was dead, the rest scattered in flight and the Emperor himself a captive.

As a result, the Anatolian heart was torn out of the empire and it was critically weakened, while Turkish power expanded rapidly, eventually leading to Byzantine appeals for help from Western Europe, prompting the First Crusade. This book sets the battle in the context of the military history of the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic World (Arab and Seljuk Turkish) up to the pivotal engagement at Manzikert in 1071, with special emphasis on the origins, course and outcome of this battle. The composition, weapons and tactics of the very different opposing armies are analyzed.

The final chapter is dedicated to assessing the impact of Manzikert on the Byzantine Empire's strategic position in Anatolia and to the battle's role as a causus belli for the Crusades. Dozens of maps and battle diagrams support the clear text.

1-1947501 Christini, Luca S. The Battle of Tannenberg-Grunwald 1410: The Teutonic Knights' Grave Tannenberg was the first battle won against the Order. The great battle has two names for a reason. The place where the battle took place is called 'hill of the firs' (Tannenberg in German language), but around it there was a forest of low trees, 'the green forest' (in German dialect Grunwald) and a village called Grunfeld.

The battle was described in a 'Chronica Conflictus' contained in 'Rerum scriptores Prussicarum' and 'Historiae Poloniae' by the Polish priest Jan Dlugosz, whose father directly participated in the battle, and who interviewed many other known survivors.

At the beginning of the battle, the Knights were able to destroy the right of the Lithuanians, but later had to fall back. When their brave Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen was killed in the center of the mixture, then the battle was finally lost. The Teutonic lost at least 20,000 soldiers and 200 knights including the Grand Commander Conrad von Liechtenstein, Marshal Friedrich von Wallenrod, and many commanders and officers, while the Polish-Lithuanian army suffered 13,000 casualties dead and wounded.

The ultimate goal was the headquarters of the Grand Master of the Castle Marienburg (Malbork in Polish) and this fortress was taken on July 25, 16 days after the battle of Tannenberg.

1-240010 Clephan, R. Coltman The Tournament: Its Periods and Phases Excerpt: The Tournament, as practised in Germany and towards the close of the sixteenth century in England, France and Italy, must have been a rather dull performance, as the minute regulations and the cumbersome equipment precluded that dash and intrepid onslaught which make the descriptions by Froissart and other writers of his time such excellent reading. Even the gorgeous displays of Henry VIII leave us rather cold when we find that the king invariably won, and that the queen could stop the tilting at her pleasure, which was presumably when her lord had had sufficient entertainment. We have only to note that the suit in the Tower made for Henry VIII to fight on foot in the lists weighs 93 lbs., to realize that no man could be strenuous or energetic in this equipment; and when we find that the horse in the sixteenth century joust had to carry a dead weight of 340 lbs., it will be manifest that he could only amble gently along the tilt, and could not dash headlong down the lists, as the artist would have us believe. The whole subject of arms and armour teems with such disillusioning; but to the earnest student these are taken with grace, because they are born of facts quarried out of masses of written and printed records with years of incessant perseverance and devotion. 1 vol, 195 pgs 1967 US, UNGAR

1-236590 Cohen, David BATTLES OF THE WARS OF THE ROSES Starting with an overview of the Wars of the Roses' politics and events that culminated in the war between the houses of Lancaster and York. This new history focuses on the 17 battles that took place around the country between 1455 and 1487. It considers the causes, course and result of each battle, beginning with the first battle of St Albans on 22 May 1455, which was won by the Yorkist faction lead by Richard, Duke of York.

The battle of Towton on 29 March 1461 was the bloodiest ever known on English soil and the victory there of the first Yorkist King Edward IV is described here in vivid detail. The battle of Tewkesbury on 4 May 1471 saw the death of Edward Prince of Wales, the last male heir of the Lancastrians, and the subsequent murder of King Henry VI at the Tower of London. The defeat and death of King Richard III at the battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485 marked the end of the Plantagenet dynasty. The last battle of the Wars of the Roses was at East Stoke on 16 June 1487 where the first Tudor King Henry VII crushed the Yorkist revolt.

The final chapter of the book is devoted to the mystery of the Princes in the Tower, who disappeared at the Tower of London during the reign of King Richard III in 1483, and the suspects to their likely murders. Written with the most up-to-date archaeological and documentary research, and including many images of the main protagonists, battle sites, maps and genealogical charts. 1 vol, 240 pgs 2023 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-224120 Constable, Giles How to Defeat the Saracens The fall of the crusader-controlled city of Acre to the Muslims in 1291 inspired many schemes for crusades to recover Jerusalem and its environs. One of these proposals is How to Defeat the Saracens, written around 1317 by William of Adam, a Dominican who traveled extensively in the eastern Mediterranean, Persia, and parts of India. The treatise, poorly known even among specialists, presents a five-pronged plan for retaking the Holy Land. In particular, it focuses on cutting off economic and military support for Egypt. William's personal experience in the lands he describes comes through, for example, when he recollects his encounters in Persia with a captive Greek woman whose child he baptized, and in India with a lapsed Christian who said that God had abandoned him.

In this volume Giles Constable provides a critical edition of the Latin text and a facing English translation. Extensive notes, produced in collaboration with other experts, guide the reader through the political, geographical, economic, military, and historical context of this fascinating work.

1-1947706 Cristini, Luca and Radaelli, Matteo LA CROCIATA CONTRO I CATARI 1209-1229: The Crusade Against the Cathars The Albigensian Crusade took place between 1209 and 1229 against the Cathars after Pope Innocent III banned the sect in 1208.

Catharism was a Christian movement that spread shortly after the year 1000 and especially between 1100 and 1200, in southern Europe, the Balkans, Italy and France. It was especially strong in the Languedoc, mainly in the region of Albi (which originated from the name Albigensian), where the lords of Provence and the Count of Toulouse (and also some clergymen as bishops of Toulouse and Carcassonne and the archbishop of Narbonne) allowed the Cathars to preach towards the end of the 12th century.

ULtimately, the crusade prevailed and began the long decline of the culture and Occitan language all over the south of France. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2017 ITALY, SOLDIER SHOP

1-215750 Davies, Sean EDWARD I's CONQUEST OF WALES Edward I's conquest of Wales was a key formative event in the history of Britain, but it has not been the subject of a scholarly book for over 100 years. Research has advanced since then, changing our perception of the medieval military mind and shining fresh light on the key characters involved in the conquest. This gives the Welsh and English perspectives on the war and on the brutal, mistrustful, and ruthless personal motives that drove events.

Set in the context of Welsh warfare and society from the end of Rome to the time of Edward's opening campaign in the late thirteenth century. The narrative describes in vivid detail the military history of the conflict, the sequence of campaigns, Welsh resistance, Edward's castle building and English colonization, and the cost of the struggle to the Welsh and the English - and the uneasy peace that followed. 1 vol, 232 pgs 2017 UK, PEN & SWORD

The Anonymous Byzantine Treatise on Strategy was written by a retired combat engineer around the middle of the sixth century, while Skirmishing and Campaign Organization and Tactics date from the late tenth century and concern warfare in the mountains along the Syrian frontier and campaigns in the rugged terrain of the Balkans. Covers all these conflicts, following the campaigns of Richard the Lionheart as well as those of his younger brother who was defeated on the continent at the large Battle of Bouvines; the conquest of Wales is analyzed in detail, as well as the First Scottish War of Independence that saw William Wallace playing a prominent role. 1-242450 Esposito, Gabriele ARMIES OF THE NORMANS: 911-1194 Discusses the armies of the Normans in all their theaters, including Spain, Sicily, Malta, Italy, and Albania. Outlines the major battles and campaigns, with focus on their equipment, weapons and tactics. Supported by numerous color photographs of replica costume, weapons, and equipment. Contains 90 color illustrations.

The Norman story began in 911, when a frightened French king (Charles III 'the Simple') gave land on the Channel coast to the Viking leader Rollo in return for adopting Christianity and helping repel other Viking marauders. Rollo and his fellow Norsemen (hence 'Normandy' and 'Normans') adopted all the trappings of feudalism, evolving from pagan ship-borne raiders to archetypal Christian knights and builders of castles. However, they seem to have lost none of their ferocity and adventuring spirit. As well as Duke William's famous cross-Channel conquest, Norman forces (often mercenaries) conquered territories in and formed the hard core of the early Crusades. Bohemond captured Antioch from the Turks and set up a principality that endured almost two centuries. 1 vol, 168 pgs 2024 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-204390 Foard, Glenn and Curry, Anne BOSWORTH 1485: A Battlefield Rediscovered Bosworth is one of the most iconic of English battles. Here Richard III suffered what, thanks to Shakespeare, is arguably the most memorable death of any English king, bringing an end to the Wars of the Roses and heralding the Tudor era.

But it was also England's most famous lost battlefield. To find and explore the site, the authors led an intensive program of research, using a wide range of academic disciplines. Bosworth 1485: A battlefield rediscovered is the result.

Techniques included documentary analysis, landscape archaeology, place name study, and, most important, metal detecting survey. Using the resulting evidence the book explores the battle and battlefield - from the composition of the armies to the terrain in which the battle was fought.

They may even have found the very place where Richard fell. Yet most important is the evidence for early gunpowder weapons. Using cutting edge scientific research and ballistic experiments the authors reveal, for the first time, how to read the evidence on medieval lead round shot, just as a ballistic examiner reveals the story of a modern bullet.

Bosworth 1485 provides a fascinating and intricately researched new perspective on the event which, perhaps more than any other, marked the transition between medieval and early modern England. 1 vol, 264 pgs 2014 UK, OXBOW BOOKS

1-222840 Fulton, Michael S SIEGE WARFARE DURING THE CRUSADES Considers the history of siege warfare in the Holy Land from every angle - the tactics and technology, the fortifications, the composition of the opposing armies, and the ways in which sieges shaped Frankish and Muslim strategy at each stage of the conflict. The differences and similarities between the Eastern and Western traditions are explored, as is the impact of the shifting balance of power in the region. Includes 50 color and black and white illustrations.

The conclusions may surprise some readers. Neither the Muslims nor the Franks possessed a marked advantage in siege technology or tactics, their fortifications reflected different purposes and an evolving political environment, and although there were improvements in technologies and fortifications, the essence of siege warfare remained relatively consistent. 1 vol, 368 pgs 2020 UK, PEN & SWORD

The English controlled the territory to the north of the Loire, but had no control of regions beyond the river. During the summer, Bedford decided to eliminate his enemy and went to besiege Orleans. From October 1428 to May 1429, fierce fighting continued around the town.

The situation seemed to be lost for the besieged until the arrival of a young peasant girl named Joan. The exploits of the Maid of Orleans led to the making of her legend. Knights joining the Templars renounced their worldly possessions and vowed to follow a strict code, which included the command to fight the infidel enemy bravely regardless of the odds. 2-195090 Hammond, Peter RICHARD III AND THE BOSWORTH CAMPAIGN On 22 August 1485, the forces of the Yorkist king Richard III and his Lancastrian opponent Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, clashed at Bosworth Field in Leicestershire in one of the decisive battles of English history. Richard was defeated and killed. Henry took the crown as Henry VII, established the Tudor dynasty, and set English history on a new course. For the last 500 years, this most famous battle of the Wars of the Roses, has excited passionate interest and continuing controversy.

Peter Hammond, in a vivid and perceptive account of the battle, retells the story of the tangled dynastic and personal rivalries that provoked the conflict, describes the preparations of the two converging armies and offers a gripping analysis of the contest itself. The latest documentary and archaeological evidence is considered, and the author weighs up the merits of conflicting interpretations of the battle and the battlefield. He also pays particular attention to the contrasting characters of Richard III and Henry Tudor, the villain and the victor of the drama, who are reconsidered as individuals and as commanders.

This lucid, authoritative, and readable new history will be essential reading for anyone who is intrigued by the short, unhappy reign of Richard III and the trial of strength that destroyed him. 1 vol, 224 pgs 2011 UK, PEN AND SWORD

2-202590 Harari, Yuval Noah SPECIAL OPERATIONS IN THE AGE OF CHIVALRY 1100-1550 Alongside the familiar pitched battles, regular sieges, and large-scale maneuvers, medieval and early modern wars also involved assassination, abduction, treason and sabotage. These undercover operations were aimed chiefly against key individuals, mostly royalty or the leaders of the opposing army, and against key fortified places, including bridges, mills and dams.

However, because of their clandestine nature, these deeds of 'derring-do' have not been studied in any detail, a major gap which this book fills. It surveys a wide variety of special operations, from the eleventh to the sixteenth century. It then analyzes in greater depth six select and exciting operations: the betrayal of Antioch in 1098; the attempt to rescue King Baldwin II from the dungeon of Khartpert in 1123; the assassination of Conrad of Montferrat in 1192; the attempt to storm Calais in 1350; the 'dirty war' waged by the rulers of France and Burgundy in the 1460s and 1470s; and the demolition of the flour mill of Auriol in 1536. 1 vol, 248 pgs 2009 US, BOYDEL & BREWER

1-212380 Harwood, Brian FIXER AND FIGHTER: The Life of Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent, 1170 - 1243 Hubert de Burgh rose from obscure beginnings to become one of the most powerful men in England. He loyally served first King John and then the young Henry III and played a crucial role in saving the Plantagenet dynasty when it was at its most vulnerable.

During King John's disastrous wars in France, Hubert held Chinon castle against the besieging French for a whole year. He remained loyal when the Barons rebelled against John and, when they invited French invaders to intervene, Hubert successfully held Dover Castle for the king against a siege led by the French Prince Louis. After John's death, he held it for the new king, 9-year old Henry, against a renewed siege. In August 1217 he struck the final blow against the French invasion, which still held London, when he defeated a powerful fleet carrying French reinforcements at the naval Battle of Sandwich.

Hubert continued to serve Henry III, making important reforms as Justiciar of England and leading military campaigns against the Welsh Prince Lewellyn. He eventually lost favor due to the machinations of his rivals and narrowly avoided execution but was eventually reconciled with his king and able to die a peaceful death. Incredibly, this is the first full-length biography of this remarkable man. 1 vol, 176 pgs 2016 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-209580 HIll, Paul THE NORMAN COMMANDERS: Masters of Warfare 911-1135 Robert Guiscard, William the Conqueror, Roger I of Sicily and Bohemond Prince of Antioch are just four of the exceptional Norman commanders who not only led their armies to victory in battle but also, through military force, created their own kingdoms in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Their single-minded and aggressive leadership, and the organization, discipline and fighting qualities of their armies, marked them out from their Viking forebears and from many of the armed forces that stood against them. Their brilliant careers, and those of Robert Curthose, William Rufus, Richard I of Capua and Henry I of England, are the subject of Paul Hill's latest study of medieval warfare.

This traces the course of their conquests, focusing on them as individual commanders and on their achievements on the battlefield. The military context of their campaigns, and the conditions of warfare in France and England, in southern Italy and Sicily, and in the Near East, are vividly described, as are their decisive operations and sieges - among them Hastings, Bremule, Tinchebrai, Civitate, Misilmeri, Dyrrhachium, and the Siege of Antioch. 1 vol, 240 pgs 2015 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-222120 Ingram, Mike RICHARD III AND THE BATTLE OF BOSWORTH This is the story of two very different men, Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England, and Henry Tudor and how they met in battle on 22 August 1485 at Bosworth Field. Includes 68 b/w photos, 17 b/w illustrations, 8pp color plates, 11 b/w maps, and two tables.

The Battle of Bosworth, along with Hastings and Naseby, is one of the most important battles in English history and, on the death of Richard, ushered in the age of the Tudors. This book, using contemporary sources, examines their early lives, the many plots against Richard, and the involvement of Henry's mother, Margaret Beaufort. It also offers a new explanation for Richard's execution of William Hastings.

Despite recent portrayals as the archetypal fence-sitters, the book also shows that the powerful Stanley family had a long standing feud with Richard and were not only complicit in the plots against him in the months before the battle, but probably laid the trap that ultimately led to his death on the battlefield.

It shows that the events that climaxed at Bosworth were made possible by the intrigues of King Louis XI of France and shows that it was not just the fate of England that was at stake but that of France itself. King Louis' taste for intrigue and double-dealing had earned him the nicknames 'the Cunning' and 'the Universal Spider.' The book details how he spun webs of plots and conspiracies first against Edward IV then Richard III, destabilized England, and created a platform for Henry's invasion: policies that were continued by his daughter, Anne de Beaujeu, after Louis death.

This was also a time of revolution in warfare, so the book examines English and European way of war at the time and how it affected the outcome at Bosworth. Then using the latest archaeology and contemporary sources it reconstructs the last hours of Richard III, where the battle took place, and how the battle unfolded using step by step maps and an order of battle for the day. It finally looks at the aftermath of the battle and how Yorkist resistance to the new regime continued into the reign of Henry VIII. 1 vol, 302 pgs 2019 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-223720 Kolovou, Loulia Anna Komnene and the Alexiad - The Byzantine Princess and the First Crusade Anna Komnene is one of the most curious ?gures in the history of an intriguing empire. A woman of extraordinary education and intellect, she was the only Byzantine female historian and one of the ?rst and foremost historians in medieval Europe. Yet few people know of her and her extraordinary story. Subsequent historians and scholars have skewed the picture of Anna as an intellectual princess and powerful author. She has been largely viewed as an angry, bitter old woman, who greedily wanted a throne that did not belong to her. Accusations of conspiracy and attempted murder were hurled at her and as punishment for her 'transgressions' she was to live the last days of her life in exile. It was during her time in a convent, where she was not a nun, that she composed the Alexiad, the history of the First Crusade and the Byzantine Emperor, Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118), her father.

This book aims to present Anna Komnene - the fascinating woman, pioneer intellectual, and charismatic author - to the general public. Drawing on the latest academic research to reconstruct Anna's life, personality and work, it moves away from the myth of Anna the conspirator and 'power-hungry woman' which has been unfairly built around her over centuries of misrepresentation. It places Anna Komnene in the context of her own time: the ancient Greek colony and medieval Eastern Roman empire, known as Byzantium, with the magni?cent city of Constantinople at its heart. At the forefront of an epic clash between East and West, this was a world renowned for its dazzling wealth, mystery and power games. It was also known for a vigorous intellectual renaissance centuries before its western counterpart. This was a world with Anna Komnene directly at the center.

The convoy which brought him necessary reinforcements was intercepted at sea, somewhere between Dover, Sandwich, and South Foreland, and never reached the English coast.

1-226940 Lewis, Tom MEDIEVAL MILITARY COMBAT: Battle Tactics and Fighting Techniques of the Wars of the Roses A concise explanation of how other accounts, and popular culture such as films, have misrepresented medieval warfare. Shows the techniques and tactics in such battles and uses the Battle of Towton as the base line for its overall study. Also breaks new ground in establishing medieval battle numbers.

How did armored medieval soldiers fight? Did they just walk forward and smash each other with their maces and poleaxes for hours on end, as depicted on film and in programs such as Game of Thrones? Hardly. It is impossible to fight in such a manner for more than several minutes due to exhaustion setting in. Indeed, we know more about how the Roman and Greek armies fought than we do of the 1300 to 1550 period, but a re-examination and re-interpretation of the historical accounts offers insight.

1-239190 Livingston, Michael AGINCOURT: Battle of the Scarred King Well-written and extensive analysis of original sources, including the French battle plan that still survives today, provides a new interpretation of the location, battle formation, and progress of the 25 October 1415 battle. Discusses some of the popular myths surrounding the Hollywood version of the battle. Includes 16 pages of color illustrations and numerous black and white maps.

The English invasion of France in 1415 saw them take the French port of Harfleur after a long siege, following which Henry was left with a sick and weakened army, which he chose to march across Normandy to the port of Calais against the wishes of his senior commanders. The French had assembled a superior force and shadowed the English Army before finally blocking its route. The battle that followed was an overwhelming victory for the English, with the French suffering horrific casualties. Agincourt opened the door for Henry V's further conquests in France.

1-217590 Livingstone, Marilyn and Morgen Witzel THE BLACK PRINCE AND THE CAPTURE OF A KING: Poitiers 1356 The capture of a king in the course of a battle was a relatively rare event. This, the climactic event of the Black Prince's first campaign as commander, came at the end of nearly a year of campaigning across the southwest of France.

The battle of Poitiers in 1356 is less well known than more famous clashes such as Agincourt, however, Poitiers was no less dramatic, and equally important in terms of the course of the Hundred Years War. The capture of King Jean brought France to the brink of total defeat, and led to one of the most devastating and destructive periods in French history. It is not exaggeration to say that the battle of Poitiers changed the course of history for both France and England.

In the summer of 1356 the Prince and his army drove northward towards the Loire, attacking once again deep into French territory. This time he met real opposition: the full French army led by King Jean and many of the leading nobility of France, some of them veterans of the defeat at Crecy ten years before. Outnumbered, the Prince fell back, but in September he turned near the city of Poitiers to make a stand.

The battle that followed was a tense encounter. The French had learned much from the disastrous defeat at Crecy, and took time to organize and prepare before attacking. Their advance was deliberate and well-planned, yet the result was the same. Once again, English and Welsh archers wrought mayhem among the French ranks. The French formations disintegrated, and a violent counterattack by English men-at-arms caused it to dissolve entirely. King Jean and his eldest son made a final stand with some of their followers, but in the end they were forced to surrender and were taken back to England as prisoners.

The core of the book is a day-by-day description of the campaign of July-September 1356, climaxing with a detailed description of the Battle of Poitiers itself. The detailed account and analysis of the battle and the campaigns that led up to it has a strong focus on the people involved in the campaign: ordinary men-at-arms and noncombatants as well as princes and nobles. 1 vol, 224 pgs 2018 US, CASEMATE

2-49620 McGeer, Eric SOWING THE DRAGON'S TEETH:Byzantine 10th Cent War. The military achievements of the emperors Nikephoros Phokas, John Tzimiskes, and Basil II brought the Byzantine Empire to the height of its power by the early eleventh century. This volume presents new editions and translations of two military treatises-the Praecepta militaria of Nikephoros Phokas and the revised version included in the Taktika of Nikephoros Ouranos-outlining the tactical system used by Byzantine armies in campaigns against Muslim forces in Cilicia and Syria. Products of experienced soldiers, the texts offer a realistic view of Byzantine warfare and reveal the sophistication of Byzantine military science. Eric McGeer places the treatises in military historical context; explores the factors that led the Byzantine army to fight as it did; and investigates morale, discipline, and leadership-all of which determined the difference between failure and success. 1 vol, 405 pgs 1995 US, DUMBARTON OAKS

1-666143 Moreno, Manual OLMEDO 1445 The instability of the reign of Juan II of Castile, caused by the disputes between the king's favorite, the constable Don Alvaro de Luna and the league of nobles led by the infantes of Aragon, with the support of the kingdom of Navarra, crystallized in a warlike confrontation which lasted, truces in between, between 1437 and 1445, with the final match being fought in the summer of this last year in front of the town of Olmedo.

This book explains the causes and maneuvers of the campaign and offers an authentic treatise on the rules of combat, tactics , equipment, and weapons typical of the mid-15th century. It provides a multitude of weaponry details and curiosities, including the techniques used with each of the various weapons.

This battle is a confrontation between nobles who followed the rules of chivalry. In the mid-15th century, the code ordered many aspects of the forms, weapons, and techniques used in combat, creating the personal honor of the knight and that of his entire household. 1 vol, 128 pgs 2021 SPAIN, ALMENA

The Muslim population was forced to leave their homes, departing to Archidona and Granada. Following a compromise, they surrendered the castle and their Christian slaves in exchange for being provided with beasts of burden to carry their goods out of the city. For two days, they were able to sell their properties and 895 men, 770 women, and 863 children left. 1-666101 Moreno, Manuel THE BATTLE OF ALARCOS 1195: Prelude to the De Toulouse Navas The Battle of Alarcos was a battle between the Almohads led by Abu Yusuf Ya'qub al-Mansur and King Alfonso VIII of Castile. It resulted in the defeat of the Castilian forces and subsequent retreat to Toledo whereas the Almohads conquered back Trujillo, Montanchez, and Talavera.

The Castilian king put most of his heavy cavalry in a compact body, about 8,000 strong, and gave its command to the fierce Diego Lopez de Haro, Lord of Vizcaya. They were to shatter the enemy with an irresistible charge. The king himself would follow with the infantry and the Military Orders to complete the enemy rout.

The Christian cavalry charge was somewhat disordered, but its impetus was still formidable. The knights crashed against the Zanatas and Bani Marin and dispersed them; lured by the Amir's standard, they charged uphill: vizier Abu Yahya was killed and the Hintatas fell almost to a man trying to protect themselves. Most of the knights turned to their left and after a fierce struggle they routed the al-Andalus forces of Ibn Sanadid. After three hours, in the afternoon's intense heat, fatigue and Almohad missiles took their toll of armored knights.

The Arab right under Yarmun had been enveloping the Castilian flank and rear. At this point, the best of the Almohad forces attacked, with the sultan himself clearly visible in the front ranks, and the knights were almost completely surrounded.

Alfonso advanced with all his remaining forces into the melee, only to find himself assaulted from all sides and under a rain of arrows. For some time he fought hand-to-hand, until removed from the action, almost by force, by his bodyguard. They fled towards Toledo.

The Castilian infantry was destroyed, together with most of the Orders which had supported them. The Lord of Vizcaya tried to force his way through the ring of enemy forces, but finally had to seek refuge in the unfinished fortress of Alarcos with just a fraction of his knights.

The castle was surrounded with some 3,000 people trapped inside, half of them women and children. The king's enemy, Pedro Fernandez de Castro, who had taken little part in the action, was sent by the Amir to negotiate the surrender; Lopez de Haro and the survivors were allowed to go, leaving 12 knights as hostages for the payment of a great ransom.

1-45910 Morillo, Stephen WARFARE UNDER THE ANGLO-NORMAN KINGS, 1066-1135 This study of the battles waged between 1066 and 1135 by the Anglo-Norman kings of England - William the Conqueror, William Rufus and Henry I -is a major restatement of the nature of medieval warfare in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Bringing together the two major trends in recent medieval military history, the study of military organisations and the study of campaigns, Stephen Morillo illuminates the interrelationship of military organisation and social and political structures and brings many new perceptions to bear, such as the central role of the familia regis, the King's military household. The roles of armies and castles and the normal activities of warfare are examined to show why sieges were far more common than pitched battles. Siege and battle tactics are analysed in the context of social and political influences, administrative structures and campaign patterns, and a connection is proposed in most pre-modern warfare between government strength and infantry quality. 1 vol, 217 pgs 1997 LONDON, BOYDELL & BREWER

When on Christmas Day 1130, Roger de Hauteville had himself crowned first King of Sicily, the island entered a golden age. Norman and Italian, Greek and Arab, Lombard, Englishman, and Jew all contributed to a culture that was as brilliant as it was cosmopolitan; to an intellectual climate that attracted the artists the artists and scholars of three continents; and to an atmosphere of racial and religious toleration unparalleled in Europe. Sixty-four years later to the day, the sun set on the Sicilian Kingdom; but its glory lives on in such dazzling monuments as the Palatine Chapel in Palermo or the cathedrals of Monreale and Cefalu.

In this second volume, John Julius Norwich tells the story of the Kingdom in all its splendor, through the reigns of the grotesquely misnamed William the Bad and the Good to the bastard Tancred desperately struggling to preserve his country's independence. We read too of St. Bernard -- magnetic but insufferable -- and of Adrian IV, the only English Pope. Also, a surprising number of other compatriots included Richard the Lionheart (behaving abominably in Messina), his sister Queen Joanna of Sicily, and the sinister Walter of the Mill, the only man in history regularly to sign himself Emir and Archbishop. 1 vol, 353 pgs 2012 UK, FABER AND FABER

1-226000 Peer, Chris THE HIGHLAND BATTLES The wars fought in Scotland's northern and western highlands between the 9th and 14th centuries were a key stage in the military history of the region. Out of this confused and turbulent period came the more settled and familiar history of the region. The Highlands and islands were controlled by the kings of Norway or by Norse or Norse-Celtic warlords, who not only resisted Scottish royal authority but on occasion seemed likely to overthrow it.

This study provides an account of the series of campaigns and battles that shaped Scotland. The narrative is structured around a number of battles -- Skitten Moor, Torfness, Tankerness, Renfrew, Mam Garvia, Clairdon, and Dalrigh -- which illustrate phases of the conflict and reveal the strategies and tactics of the rival chieftains. It also considers to what extent the fighting methods of the time survived into the post-medieval period. 1 vol, 216 pgs 2020 UK, PEN & SWORD

But perhaps the impact of the conflict has been overstated, and its effect on the common people across the country is hard to judge. His remarkable achievements and his ruthless methods have given rise to a sinister reputation. He possessed exceptional gifts as a leader and manager of men - and ranks among the greatest military commanders - but he can only be properly understood in terms of the Mongol society and traditions.

The military and cultural background of the Mongols and the nature of steppe societies and their armies are major themes of his book. He looks in detail at the military skills, tactics, and ethos of the Mongol soldiers, and at the advantages and disadvantages they had in combat with the soldiers of more settled societies. 2-210200 Romane, Julian BYZANTIUM TRIUMPHANT: The Military History of the Byzantines 959-1025 Byzantium Triumphant describes in detail the wars of the Byzantine emperors Nicephorus II Phocas, his nephew and assassin John I Tzimiskes, and Basil II. The operations, battles, and drama of their various bitter struggles unfold, depicting the new energy and improved methods of warfare developed in the late 10th century. These emperors were at war on all fronts, fighting for survival and dominance against enemies including the Arab caliphates, Bulgars (Basil II was dubbed by later authors 'the Bulgar Slayer'), and the Holy Roman Empire, not to mention dealing with civil wars and rebellions.

Drawing on the evidence of Byzantine military manuals, this offers a detailed understanding of the Byzantine tactics, organization, training, and doctrine. While essentially a military history, there is, inevitably with the Byzantine emperors, a healthy dose of court intrigue, assassination, and political skullduggery too. 1 vol, 224 pgs 2020 UK, PEN & SWORD

Discusses topics such as how women maintained the household and supported the family commercially and politically; how royal women acted as diplomats, negotiators, and supporters to both York and Lancaster; the individual experience of religious women involved in the conflict; women who fought to directly support the war effort; organizers who planned strategy and supplied their husbands; and defenders who commanded soldiers during a siege. The existence of women rebels at this time is also discussed, as is women's wider, more subtle contributions and experiences to the security of the monarchy. For the Christian warriors, many of them uneducated Germanic tribesmen, the capture of Jerusalem would bring about the End Times and the return of Christ. 2-195390 Sadler, John TOWTON: The Battle of Palm Sunday Field 1461 The battle at Towton in Yorkshire on 29 March 1461 was the largest, longest fought and bloodiest day in English medieval history. In terms of the number of troops involved, the ruthlessness of the fighting, the quantity of casualties and the decisive nature of its outcome, Towton stands out from the long sequence of battles fought for control of England in the fifteenth century.

This bitter contest of arms was a turning point in the Wars of the Roses and -- as a result of the discoveries of modern archaeological research - it is one of the best known. John Sadler, in this vivid reconstruction of the battle, offers a fresh view of a pivotal episode in English history and an unflinching insight into the cruelties of medieval warfare. 1 vol, 224 pgs 2011 UK, PEN AND SWORD

2-202100 Sadler, John THE SECOND BARON'S WAR: Simon de Montfort and the Battles of Lewes and Evesham Describes the Barons' War events in the mid-13th century and explores the leading personalities whose bitter quarrel gave rise to the conflict -- Henry III, his son Prince Edward (later Edward I), and their most famous opponent, Simon de Montfort, whose masterful charisma galvanized support among the discontented nobility.

The clash of interests between the king and his 'overmighty' subjects is reconsidered, as are the personal and political tensions that polarized opinion and tested loyalties to the limit. The main emphasis is on the two major campaigns that determined the course of the war and indeed the future government of England -- the battles fought at Lewes and Evesham. 1 vol, 192 pgs 2022 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-230700 Sadler, John HOTSPUR: Sir Henry Percy and the Myth of Chivalry On 21 July 1403 Sir Henry Percy - better known as Hotspur - led a rebel army out at Shrewsbury to face the forces of the king Henry IV. The battle was both bloody and decisive. Hotspur was shot down by an arrow and killed. Posthumously he was declared a traitor and his lands forfeited to the crown. This was an ignominious end to the brilliant career of one of the most famous medieval noblemen, a remarkable soldier, diplomat, and courtier who played a leading role in the reigns of Richard II and Henry IV. How did he earn his extraordinary reputation, and why did Shakespeare portray him as a fearsomely brave but flawed hero who, despite a traitor's death, remained the mirror of chivalry?

Hotspur's exploits as a soldier in France during the Hundred Years War, against the Scots in the Scottish borders and at the battles of Otterburn, Homildon Hill, and Shrewsbury have overshadowed his diplomatic role as a loyal royal servant in missions to Prussia, Cyprus, Ireland, and Aquitaine. And, as the heir to one of the foremost noble families of northern England, he was an important player not only in the affairs of the North but of the kingdom as a whole. 1 vol, 256 pgs 2022 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-202570 Stanton, Charles NORMAN NAVAL OPERATIONS in the Mediterranean The rise of Norman naval power in the central Mediterranean in the 11th and 12th centuries prompted a seminal shift in the balance of power on the sea. Drawing from Latin, Greek, Jewish and Arabic sources, this book details how the House of Hauteville, particularly under Robert Guiscard and his brother Roger, used sea power to accomplish what the Papacy, the German Empire and the Eastern Empire could not: the conquest of southern Italy and Sicily from Islam.

The subsequent establishment of an aggressive naval presence on Sicily, first by Roger de Hauteville and then by his son Roger II, effectively wrested control of the central Mediterranean from Byzantine and Muslim maritime hegemony, opening the sea to east-west shipping. The author goes on to describe how this development, in turn, emboldened the West Italian maritime republics, principally Genoa and Pisa, to expand eastward in conjunction with the Crusades. It was, quite literally, a sea change, ushering in a new period of western maritime ascendancy which has persisted into the modern era. 1 vol, 0 pgs 2011 US, BOYDEL & BREWER

A succession of catastrophes in the middle years of the fourteenth century brought France to the brink of destruction. The bankruptcy of the French state and a bitter civil war within the royal family were followed by the defeat and capture of the King of France by the Black Prince at Poitiers. A peasant revolt and a violent revolution in Paris completed the tragedy. In a humiliating treaty of partition France ceded more than a third of its territory to Edward III of England. Not for sixty years would the English again come so close to total victory.

Yet the theme of the volume is not destruction, but survival. France's great cities, provincial towns and rural communities resisted where its leaders failed. They withstood the sustained savagery of the soldiers and the free companies of brigands to undo most of Edward III's work in the following generation. England's triumphs proved to be brittle and short-lived.

1-34353 Sumption, Jonathan HUNDRED YEARS WAR, THE:Trial by Battle Book is heavily researched from both primary and secondary sources, b/w illust, good maps, index.

This long-awaited third volume of Jonathan Sumption's monumental history of the war narrates the period from 1369 to 1393, a span marked by the slow decline of English fortunes and the subsequent rise of the French. The English were condemned to see the conquests of the previous thirty years overrun by the armies of the king of France in less than ten. Edward III was succeeded by a vulnerable child, destined to grow into a neurotic and unstable adult presiding over a divided nation. England's citizenry was being asked to pay for a long and expensive war, soldiers were becoming disenchanted, and the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 evidenced the social unrest in the land. However, France too paid a heavy price for her success. Beneath the surface splendor the French government sat poised at the edge of bankruptcy and the population subsisted in fear and insecurity. The inexperience of Charles VI and his gradual relapse into insanity divided the French political world, as the king's relatives competed for the plunder of the state, sowing the seeds of disintegration and civil war in the following century. 1 vol, 1024 pgs 20011 US, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA PRESS

1-34354 Sumption, Jonathan HUNDRED YEARS WAR, THE: Volume IV - Cursed Kings Tells the story of the destruction of France by the madness of its king and the greed and violence of his family. In the early 15th century, Europe's strongest and most populous state, France, suffered a complete internal collapse. As the warring parties within fought for the spoils of the kingdom under the vacant gaze of the mad King Charles VI, the country was left at the mercy of one of the most remarkable rulers of the European Middle Ages: Henry V of England, who had destroyed the French army on the field of Agincourt in October 1415 and left most of France's leadership dead.

Recounts in extraordinary detail the relentless campaign of conquest that brought Henry to the streets and palaces of Paris within just a few years. He died at the age of 36 in a French royal castle in 1422, just two months before he would have become King of France. 1 vol, 928 pgs 2015 US, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA PRESS

1-45970 Suppe, Frederick C. MILITARY INSITUTIONS ON THE WELSH MARCHES Between 1066 and 1282 two quite different societies were juxtaposedalong the Welsh Marches: a feudally-based Anglo-Norman one, and aCeltic Welsh one. It has been conventional to consider the formerto have been more sophisticated and developed than the latter but, in fact, the situation was more complex, and during more than two centuries of attacks and campaigns each society borrowed from the other.

This book is the first comparative study of the two military systems. It considers issues pertinent to the entire border region, and, indeed, to other medieval marches. Specific topics examined include: the nature of Welsh military service, Welsh tactics and the English response, the development and functioning of Clun (a representative border castlery), the local command in Shropshire and the so-called 'wardens' of the March, and the extent to which Welsh military customs influenced those of the Marches and of England.

1-214200 Sverdrup, Carl Fredrik THE MONGOL CONQUESTS: The Military Operations of Genghis Khan and Sube'etei The Mongols created the greatest landlocked empire known to history. It was an empire created and sustained by means of conquest. Initially an insignificant tribal leader, Genghis Khan gradually increased his power, overcoming one rival after another. After he had subjugated all tribes of Inner Asia, he struck southward into China and later attacked distant Khwariz in the Near East. Sube'etei continued to make significant conquests after Genghis Khan died, conquering central China and leading a large force into the heart of Europe.

Between them, Genghis Khan and Sube'etei directed more than 40 campaigns, fought more than 60 battles, and conquered all lands from Korea in the east to Hungary and Poland in the west. 25 maps.

This book offers a detailed narrative of the military operations of these two leaders, based on early Mongolian, Chinese, Near Eastern, and European sources. Making full use of newly translated Chinese sources, the account offer details never before given in English works.

Detailed maps showing the operations support the text. Many conventional wisdom views of the Mongols, such as their use of terror as a deliberate strategy, or their excellence at siege warfare, are shown to be incorrect. This is a major contribution to our knowledge of the Mongols and their way of warfare. 1 vol, 392 pgs 2017 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-205670 Theotokis, Georgios THE NORMAN CAMPAIGNS IN THE BALKANS: 1081-1108 The Norman expansion in 11th-century Europe was a movement of enormous historical importance, which saw men and women from the duchy of Normandy settling in England, Italy, Sicily and the Middle East. The Norman establishment in the South is particularly interesting, because it represents the story of a few hundred mercenaries who managed to establish a principality in the Mediterranean that would later develop in to the Kingdom of Sicily.

In this book the author examines the clash of two different military cultures -- the Normans and the Byzantines -- in one theater of war -- the Balkans. It is the first study to date of the military organization of the Norman and Byzantine states in the Mediterranean, and of their overall strategies and their military tactics in the battlefield. It is also the first to examine the way in which each military culture reacted and adapted to the strategies and tactics of its enemies in Italy and the Balkans.

The author closely follows the campaigns conducted by the Normans in the Byzantine provinces of Illyria and Macedonia and their battles against Imperial armies commanded by the Byzantine Emperor. He also examines the ways in which the Italian-Norman and Byzantine military systems differed, and their relative efficiencies. 1 vol, 248 pgs 2014 US, BOYDEL & BREWER

1-226810 Theotokis, Georgios BOHEMOND OF TARANTO: Crusader and Conqueror Bohemond of Taranto, Lord of Antioch and unofficial leader of the First Crusade, was a man of boundless ambition and inexhaustible energy -- he was, in the words of Romuald of Salerno, 'always seeking the impossible'. While he failed in his quest to secure the Byzantine throne, he succeeded in founding the most enduring of all the crusader states. Yet few substantial accounts of the life of this remarkable warrior have been written and none have been published in English for over a century.

He concentrates on Bohemond as a soldier and commander, covering his contribution to the crusades but focusing in particular on his military achievements in Italy, Sicily, the Balkans, and Anatolia. Since medieval commanders generally receive little credit for their strategic understanding, he examines Bohemond's war-plans in his many campaigns, describes how he adapted his battle-tactics when facing different opponents and considers whether his approach to waging war was typical of the Norman commanders of his time. 1 vol, 208 pgs 2021 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-198250 Todd, Brian and map illustrators Joshua Alfee and John Cairns WARFARE IN THE MEDIEVAL WORLD Warfare in the Medieval World with 100+ maps explores how civilizations and cultures made war on the battlefields of the Near East and Europe in the period between the fall of Rome and the introduction of reliable gunpowder weapons during the Thirty Years' War. Through an exploration of thirty-three selected battles, military historian Brian Todd Carey surveys the changing tactical relationships between the four weapon systems - heavy and light infantry and heavy and light cavalry - focusing on the evolution of shock and missile combat.

Through the use of dozens of multiphase tactical maps, this fascinating introduction to the art of war during western civilization's ancient and classical periods pulls together the primary and secondary sources and creates a powerful historical narrative. The result is a synthetic work that will be essential reading for students and armchair military historians alike. 1 vol, 272 pgs 2012 UK, PEN and SWORD

1-914160 various VAE VICTIS # 160: La Guerre d'ind?pendance de Bretagne The French-Breton War simulates the conflict between the Kingdom of France and the Duchy of Brittany. Confronted with France's rising power and the decline of his duchy, Francois II of Brittany, and later his daughter the Duchess Anne, attempted to form an alliance through marriage with Maximilian of Austria in order to unite the two houses. France was the preeminent country in Europe after the Hundred Years War. The great feudal Bretons were drawn to France's strength and influence and swayed between loyalty and betrayal of the Duke of Brittany. Brittany's independence was played out at the end of the century but its defeat during the battle of Saint-Aubin du Cormier on 24 July 1488 sealed its fate. The war continued for a few more years thanks to the support - gold and soldiers - of England, Spain, Gascony, and the Holy Empire. The war finally ended with the defeat of the Bretons and the marriage of Duchesse Anne to King of France Charles VIII, thereby sealing the annexation of the duchy to the kingdom.

1-949031 Various PRETORIEN # 31 Cover story: Belisarius and the Reconquest of Africa

After the fall of Rome and the abdication of Romulus Augustus, the Vandals had seized Carthage in 439 and established a powerful kingdom in Africa. But after unsuccessful attempts, the Emperor Justinian sent Belisarius to reconquer the African land, and proceeded to defeat the Vandals and restoree their African provinces, the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, and Corsica.

The natural and artificial borders that protected the Roman Empire ('limes') is a constant topic of research. Among its fortifications, Hadrian's Wall is one of the most famous, followed by the Antonine Wall. Praetorian profiles these amazing walls and their unequal fate. 1 vol, 68 pgs 2014 FRANCE, LCV

Praetorian makes you share in this issue by referring to the history of Charlemagne, the emperor legendary military leader but also what is said undefeated. It has often been forgotten that lasting reattached Aquitaine in France and he went to the Pope's Papal States. 1 vol, 68 pgs 2014 FRANCE, LCV

1-201200 Venning, Timothy AN ALTERNATIVE HISTORY OF BRITAIN: The Hundred Years War Explores the various decision points in a fascinating period of British history and the alternative paths that it might have taken. While necessarily speculative, all the scenarios are discussed within the framework of a deep understanding of the major driving forces, tensions and trends that shaped British history and help to shed light upon them. In so doing they help the reader to understand why things panned out as they did, as well as what might have been.

For example, what would have happened if the Black Prince had not died prematurely of the Black Death, leaving the 10-year-old Richard to inherit Edward IIIs crown. What would have been the consequences if France's Scottish allies had been victorious at Neville's Cross in 1346, while most English forces were occupied in France? What if Henry V had recovered from the dysentery that killed him at 35, giving time for his son Henry VI to inherit the combined crowns of France and England as a mature (and half-French) man rather than an infant controlled by others? And what if Joan of Arc had not emerged to galvanize French resistance at Orleans? 1 vol, 256 pgs 2013 UK, Pen and Sword

2-45880 Verbruggen, J.F. ART OF WARFARE IN WESTERN EUROPE:8th Century-1340 Warfare is a major feature of the history of the middle ages, but its study has often been the province of amateurs; only recently have the technical details of warfare and its organisation been subject to proper scholarly investigation. Professor Verbruggen's major work, outstanding in its field, applies rigorous standards in analysing often very obscure surviving evidence, and reaches conclusions very different from earlier generations of military historians.

He begins by analysing the sources for our knowledge of the military history of the period, assessing their reliability: some chroniclers exaggerate, others are careful observers or have access to official records. There follows an examination of the constituent parts of the medieval army, knights and footsoldiers, equipment and terms of service, behaviour on the field, and psychology, before the problematic question of medieval tactics is addressed through analysis of accounts of a series of major battles. Strategy is discussed in the context of these battles: whether to seek battle, fight a defensive war, or attempt a war of conquest.

1-970023 Vincent, Florent MONS-EN PEVELE - 18 AOUT 1304: Forgotten Battle Series Includes 60 B/W and color illustrations of the battle between the French, led by King Philip IV 'the Fair', and the Flemish.

The French King wanted revenge for the defeat in Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302, after which the Flemish had retaken Douai and Lille. By the beginning of 1304, the French king was ready to attack the Flemish rebels. While the French army, led by the king himself, marched north to attack William of Julich's force, the French navy sailed to Zeeland to unite with the army of Hainault and Holland. It was this combined northern force in Zeeland which struck the first blow on August 10-11, 1304 when it soundly defeated Guy of Namur's army and navy at the Battle of Zierikzee; Guy was captured and the Flemish conquest of Holland was halted.

Philip of Chieti, son of Count Guy, Count of Flanders, had gathered a strong Flemish army to stop the French invasion and taken up positions on the Pevele hill. After a day of fighting the outcome was undecided and negotiations were opened. When a French force under Guy de Saint-Pol tried to surround the Flemish, he was pushed back. Now the furious Flemish decided to launch a frontal attack, and surprised the French, who thought the battle was over for the day.

The attack reached king Philip IV of France, who was wounded and his horse was killed. He barely escaped alive, because some knights around him covered his flight, paying for this act with their lives. The Flemish reached the royal tent, but then William of Julich was killed in a counter attack that the King managed to launch, leading it himself without his helmet.

1-195190 Waterson, James SACRED SWORDS: Jihad in the Holy Land 1097-1295 In 1071 Muslim Turks crushed the Byzantine Emperor's Anatolian army at Manzikert. The Crusades, the West's response to this catastrophe, are well known as are the names of the European nobles who fought in them. The names and deeds of many of the Crusaders' opponents in the Holy Land are often unfamiliar to Western readers. Waterson tells the story of the famed leaders of the jihad - the lives and deeds of Zangi, Nur al-Din, Saladin and Baybars.

Using primarily Muslim sources, Sacred Swords reconstructs the politics of the Levant on the eve of the First Crusade and also places it in the wider context of the Muslim world of the period. It illustrates the evolution of the jihad from among the Princes of northern Iraq and analyzes the Holy War that would eventually destroy the Latin Kingdoms. Much of the action is comprehensible only when you understand that the Crusaders were not the only concern for Muslim princes. It also covers the long naval contest that raged between the navy of Egypt and the Crusader fleets.

The great events of China's Mongol war are described and analyzed, detailing their immediate and later implications for Chinese history.

1-220720 Weinczok, David THE HISTORY BEHIND GAME OF THRONES: The North Remembers A wall in the distant north cuts the world in two. Ruthless seaborne warriors raid the coasts from their war galleys, yearning to regain lost glories. A young nobleman and his kin are slaughtered under a banner of truce within a mighty castle. A warrior king becomes a legend when he smites his foe with one swing of his axe during a nation-forging battle. Yet this isn't Westeros - it's Scotland.

Game of Thrones is history re-imagined as fantasy; The History Behind Game of Thrones turns the tables, using George R. R. Martin's extraordinary fictional universe as a way to understand the driving forces and defining moments from Scotland's story. Why were castles so important? Was there a limit to the powers a medieval king could use - or abuse? What was the reality of being under siege? Was there really anything that can compare to the destructive force of dragons? By joining forces, Westeros and Scotland hold the answers.

Writer and presenter David C. Weinczok draws on a vast array of characters, events, places, and themes from Scottish history that echo Game of Thrones at every dramatic turn. Visit the castle where the real Red Wedding transpired, encounter the fearsome historical tribes beyond Rome's great wall, learn how a blood-red heart became the most feared sigil in Scotland, and much more.

By journey's end, the cogs in the wheels of Martin's world and Scottish history will be laid bare, as well as the stories of those who tried to shape - and sometimes even break - them. 1 vol, 280 pgs 2019 UK, PEN & SWORD
