1-220742 CONWAY'S All the World's Fighting Ships 1906-1921 Second in a series of four books which, as the title suggests, lists all the worlds fighting ships built during the years noted. After a brief foreword and an explanation of abbreviations used, the navies of the world are listed by country in order of their size and importance at the beginning of the period in question. Each country's ships are then displayed by 'class' commencing with the largest capital ships and progressing all the way down to the smallest torpedo boats (or whatever) with the oldest vessels mentioned first.

For each class, there is one or more of those profile line drawings which have become Conway's trademark. These are followed by all the usual technical details such as; Displacement, dimensions, machinery, armor, armament, and complement followed by the names of each ship within that class - it's builder, date laid down, date completed and fate. These are accompanied by text outlining the political intrigue of the day, variations between vessels, refits, new equipment, whatever defects or other problems beset either the class or a specific ship and a short history and fate of each ship. 1 vol, 454 pgs 1980 UK, CONWAY MARITIME PRESS

1-229470 Anderson, Thomas HITLER'S NAVY: The Kriegsmarine in Worldl War II Illustrated study of the WWII German Kriegsmarine, from its limited beginnings under the Treaty of Versailles to years of covert and innovative development to the rearmament programme that defied the restrictions, including submarines.

Blooded in the Spanish Civil War, the surface ships of the Kriegsmarine went on to play a crucial role in the opening salvoes of WWII during the invasions of Poland and Norway, although serious losses set back plans for the invasion of Britain. By the end of the war, only a handful of surface vessels remained to be divided up among the Allies. Profusely illustrated.

From the beginning of the war, but especially after the fall of France, the dreaded and extraordinarily successful U-boats stalked the Atlantic, threatening vital British shipping convoys and choking off the lifeline of munitions and supply from the US. Once Italy and Japan entered the war, German naval operations expanded to the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean.

1-217380 Cestra, Carlo JAPANESE DESTROYER SHIMAKAZE The Imperial Naval Staff demanded the development of a destroyer project with powerful weaponry and capable of reaching speed of 40 knots. The project was approved and marked with the symbol F52 and was included in the financial plan of 1939 Maru Yon.

According to the project, the armament was to consist of three two-barrel 127 mm gun turrets, and two seven-tube torpedo launchers. Due to the heavy weight of the tubes and the inability of emergency manual control of the launchers, this idea was abandoned. In connection with this, a project was prepared and the construction of the Japanese destroyer with the number 125 later named Shimakaze commenced. 1-217420 Cestra, Carlo JAPANESE CRUISER MAYA At the beginning of 1943, following the defeat in the Guadalcanal campaign, the Navy Technical Department and The High Command of the Imperial Japanese Navy strove to increase the defensive potential of all their warships. Apart from standard refits of the majority of the Imperial Japanese Navy units, a plan was adopted, which called for reconstruction of two Takao-class heavy cruisers into anti-aircraft units. Through a coincidence, only the Maya underwent such conversion. This publication shows the cruiser in her anti-aircraft configuration and briefly describes her career. Bagnasco LE PORTAEREI ITALIANE: From 1912 to 1990's This authoritative book studies the design of the first fledgling Italian 'aircraft carrier,' the Europe, in 1915, and then the Giuseppe Miraglia of 1927, as well as the technical characteristics of these ships and their aircraft. 1-208750 Draminski, Stefan THE VIIC TYPE U-BOOT The type VIIC was a slightly modified version of the successful VIIB. They had basically the same engine layout and power, but were slightly larger and heavier which made them not quite as fast as the VIIB. 5 torpedo tubes (4 at the bow and one at the stern) were installed in all but the following boats; only two bow tubes (U-72, U-78, U-80, U-554 and U-555) and no stern tube (U-203, U-331, U-351, U-401, U-431 and U-651). 91 graphics, 42 photos

The VIIC was the workhorse of the German U-boat force in World War Two from 1941 onwards and boats of this type were being built throughout the war. The first VIIC boat being commissioned was the U-69 in 1940. The VIIC was an effective fighting machine and was seen in almost all areas where the U-boat force operated although their range was not as great as the one of the larger IX types.

The VIIC came into service as the 'Happy Days' were almost over and it was this boat that faced the final defeat to the Allied anti-submarine campaign in late 1943 and 1944.

Perhaps the most famous VIIC boat was the U-96 which is featured in the movie Das Boot, other noticeable boats were the U-flak boats. Many of these boats were fitted with the Schnorkel in 1944-1945. This design saw one more improvement in the type VIIC/41 boat.

The larger mine-laying type VIID was a direct variant of the VIIC. 1 vol, 70 pgs 2015 POLAND, KAGERO

She was named in honor of Admiral Samuel Hood and was to be the first of the Admiral-class battlecruisers, but a further three vessels were never completed. During the construction, the design had to be extensively modified to embody the experience of the Battle of Jutland, which markedly exposed insufficient armor of British battlecruisers. However not all shortcomings were eliminated, which later contributed to the loss of the ship. Includes 31 drawing sheets and three color profiles. 1 vol, 36 pgs 2015 POLAND, KAGERO

Transferred to the Pacific Fleet in 1944, the Iowa first fired her guns in anger in the Marshall Islands campaign, and sunk her first enemy ship, the Katori. It ended the war spending several months bombarding the Japanese Home Islands before the surrender in August 1945. After taking part in the Korean War, the Iowa was decommissioned in 1958, before being briefly reactivated in the 1980s as part of President Reagan's 600-Ship Navy Plan. She was launched on 3 October 1936 and completed in January 1939, armed with nine 28cm C/34 guns in three triple turrets. She operated with Gneisenau for much of the early portion of World War II, including sorties into the Atlantic to raid British merchant shipping. They took part in Operation Weser?bung (April-June 1940), the German invasion of Norway, during which they sank the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and her escort destroyers Acasta and Ardent. Scharnhorst also sank HMS Rawalpindi in November 1939. In early 1943, Scharnhorst joined the Tirpitz in Norway to intercept Allied convoys to the Soviet Union. On a sortie from Norway to attack a convoy, the German force was intercepted by British ships and during the Battle of the North Cape (26 December 1943), HMS Duke of York and her escorts sank Scharnhorst. Most of her crew was lost.

1-218001 Draminski, Stefan THE BATTLESHIP BISMARCK Completed in 1941, the 45,000-ton German battleship sunk the HMS Hood, the pride of the British Navy, and was then chased around the North Atlantic by many units of the Royal Navy. She was finally dispatched with gunfire and torpedoes on 27 May, less than five months after her completion. Her wreck still lies where she sank, 4,800m down and 960km off the west coast of France.

Drawing on new research and technology, this edition is the most comprehensive examination of Bismarck ever published. It includes a complete set of detailed line drawings with fully descriptive keys and full-color 3D artwork, supported by technical details, photographs and text on the building of the ship and a record of the ship's service history. 1 vol, 256 pgs 2018 UK, OSPREY PUBLISHING

These pictorial records document the main types of Japanese vessels, from battleships to submarines, based on the best images from Shizuo Fukui, a former Imperial Japanese Navy commander and technician.

These photos include the ones Fukui began collecting as a young boy and continued after he worked as a naval shipbuilder, and those that he was given in order to complete a photographic history of the Imperial Japanese Navy's ships, which include those gathered by Nagamura Kiyoshi, a shipbuilder who proactively collected photos, and the collection of machinist Amari Yoshiyuki. Moreover, with the help of shipbuilder Makino Shigeru, among others, Fukui was able to continue to gather photographs and other items throughout the postwar period. It is not an exaggeration, therefore, to say that Fukui dedicated his entire life to this work. 1-201580 Goralski, Waldemar THE BATTLESHIP BISMARCK The German battleship Bismarck is one of the most famous warships in history. The lead ship of her class, she was named after German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. At the time of her build, she was the largest warship ever commissioned.

Despite her fame, Bismarck took part in only one operation during her brief career. She and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen left Gotenhafen on the morning of 19 May 1941 for Operation Rheinubung, during which she was to intercept and destroy convoys between the United States and Great Britain. When Bismarck and Prinz Eugen attempted to break out into the Atlantic, they were discovered by the Royal Navy and were attacked in Denmark Strait. During the short engagement, the British flagship battle cruiser, HMS Hood, was sunk after several minutes of firing. In response, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued the order to 'Sink the Bismarck,' spurring a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy.

Two days later, Swordfish biplanes launched from the carrier HMS Ark Royal torpedoed the Bismarck. In the ensuing battle on the morning of 27 May 1941, Bismarck was heavily attacked for almost two hours before finally sinking and taking many German soldiers to their watery grave.

1-204220 Goralski, Waldemar THE HEAVY CRUISER PRINZ EUGEN Following the defeat in the World War I, the Treaty of Versailles limited the tonnage of the German Navy to 144 thousand tons. Moreover, the treaty stipulated that new warships could only be built to replace the decommissioned ones. In 1921 a new law was enacted which brought about the creation of the Reichsmarine.

The few warships that Germany was allowed to keep were modernized and new ones were being built to replace the obsolete ones. Construction of light cruisers was a priority and the first of those, the Emden, was built to replace the Niobe launched in the 19th century.

In 1927, during the disarmament conference in Geneva, Germany demanded equal right as far as the expansion of the navy was concerned. Those demands were rejected, therefore, the Reichsmarine drew up an expansion plan. It stipulated construction of new warships within the coming years, including submarines, which were forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles. 176 drawings/photos. 1 vol, 96 pgs 2014 POLAND, KAGERO

Fast, heavily armed and manned by well-trained crews, they took part in some of the most memorable surface and air-sea battles of the Pacific War, but also in hundreds of lesser known actions.

Those workhorses of the Imperial Navy were employed in a wide variety of roles - from direct action against enemy fleet to escort duties and even pure transport tasks. Commander Hara Tameichi rightly observes that it was the destroyers that bore the brunt of the fighting at sea, and very few among them were as good as the Kagero class warships. 134 drawings/photos. 1 vol, 68 pgs 2014 POLAND, KAGERO

1-209200 Goralski, Waldemar JAPANESE CRUISER CHIKUMA According to arrangements of the Treaty of London, light cruisers could be armed with guns of maximum caliber of 155 mm, in number of up to 15 pieces. Japanese designers, admirals Fujimoto and Fukuda developed the design of a ship classified as medium type cruiser. Its task was the protection of the main forces of the fleet against the attacks of light forces of enemy and fighting other cruisers.

The ship was ordered under the Second Program of Fleet Development of 1934. Funds for the construction of the ship were secured in the budget for fiscal year 1935/36. The ship, named Chikuma (a river in Nagano prefecture on the island of Honshu) was built at Mitsubishi shipyard in Nagasaki. The ship was laid down on 1 October 1935, launched on 19 March 1938 and commissioned on 20 May 1939. Includes 140 illustrations and graphics. 1 vol, 80 pgs 2015 POLAND, KAGERO

1-207220 Green, Michael BATTLESHIPS OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY: Images of War From 1895 to 1944 the US Navy commissioned some 60 steel-clad battleships; the first being Indiana (BB-1) and the last USS Missouri (BB-63). After an impressive showing in the Spanish-American War and the 'Great White Fleet' circumnavigation of the world, US battleships played only a minor role in the First World War. They came into their own in World War II primarily bombarding enemy held coastal regions and supporting Allied operations in Europe and the Pacific. Their firepower on the later examples had nine 16-inch and up to 20 5-inch guns plus copious antiaircraft defenses.

On the few occasions these mighty ships took on Japanese counterparts, they performed brilliantly but protection of the increasingly important aircraft couriers was more decisive. Armor plate nearly a foot and a half thick saved many from fatal attack from suicidal kamikaze pilots.

Post WW2 the battleships were relegated to war reserve status but later their value projecting American military power worldwide and their conversion to platforms for cruise missile saw their rebirth. The last US battleship retired in 1992 having served in the Korean and Vietnam War, the Middle East, and finally Desert Storm.

This fine book gives the expert and layman a privileged overview of one of the greatest weapon systems in military history. Includes 250 color and b/w illustrations. 1 vol, 192 pgs 2014 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-222620 Green, Michael United States Navy Submarines 1900-2019- Images of War series In 1900 the US Navy took into its first submarine, the Holland VI, into service. With a single torpedo tube, it had a crew of six, weighed 82 tons and traveled submerged at 6.2mph at a depth of up to 75 feet. 250 color & black and white illustrations

Contrast this to the 18 Ohio Class nuclear-powered submarines which entered service in 1981. Weighing 21,000 tons with a crew of 155, its underwater speed is estimated at 30mph at a depth of some 1,000 feet. It carries 16 nuclear warhead ballistic missiles with a range of 4,600 miles.

This latest Images of War title provides a detailed insight into the many US Navy submarine classes. Particularly fascinating is the post Second World War program of nuclear powered submarines stating with the Nautilius and progressing to the Skate, Thresher, Sturgeon, Los Angeles and George Washington. Admiral Hyman G Rickover's role as Father of the nuclear navy is examined in detail.

Technologically innovative, it was the only U-Boat to conduct a wartime patrol while equipped with the snorkel, GHG Balkon passive sonar, and a rubberized coating known as Alberich designed to reduce its acoustic signature and hide from Allied sonar. After the end of World War II, it was the subject of intense testing and evaluation by the Allies, before finally being sunk to the bottom of the Potomac River.

1-239420 Hough, Richard The Potemkin Mutiny Hailed as an important contribution both to history and to sea literature when first published in 1961, Richard Hough's book gives a dramatic blow-by-blow account of the June 1905 mutiny on board the Russian battleship Potemkin. The revolt, immortalized in Sergei Eisenstein's famous motion picture, was considered by the Soviets a glorious moment in the people's fight against a tyrannical czarist government, but for others it was a sordid little rebellion over bad meat.

Hough chronicles events from the first rumblings of discontent to the closing scenes of the uprising that nearly brought about the Russian Revolution twelve years early. His balanced recounting of events, including the killing of many Potemkin officers and a civil uprising in Odessa quelled by the Cossacks who, slaughtered thousands, show the protagonists not as symbols but as human beings reacting under powerful tensions. 1 vol, 190 pgs 1960 US, PANTHEON BOOKS

Details their development, analyzes their design characteristics, and offers their operational histories, particularly those actions against other ships at Mers el-Kebir, Dakar, and Casablanca. 1-235430 Knowles, Daniel KING GEORGE V-CLASS BATTLESHIPS Details the story of Britain's King George V-class battleships from conception and design through their operational history.

After WWI, the major naval powers agreed to restricting the construction of capital ships and limiting the numbers that signatories were allowed to maintain, so numerous ships were scrapped or disposed of and the majority of planned vessel were either canceled whilst being built or never laid down. By the late 1920s the Royal Navy's battle force comprised of the two Nelson-class ships, the battlecruisers Hood, Renown and Repulse, and Revenge and Queen Elizabeth-class ships, all designed before the First World War.

In 1928, the Royal Navy began planning a new class of battleships which was put on hold with the signing of the Treaty of London. In 1935, realizing its battle fleet was becoming dated as other nations laid down new classes of battleships, the Royal Navy recommenced planning capital ships within treaty limitations. The result was the King George V-class battleships.

Regarded by some as the worst new-generation battleships in WWII, the King George V-class were Britain's most modern battleships during the conflict and saw action in some of the most famous engagements -- from the sinking of the Bismarck in 1941 to the surrender of Japan in 1945. 1 vol, 400 pgs 2022 UK, FONTHILL MEDIA

1-230110 Lamnbert, John BRITISH NAVAL TRAWLERS AND DRIFTERS IN TWO WORLD WARS John Lambert was a renowned naval draftsman, whose plans were highly valued for their accuracy and detail by model makers and enthusiasts. By the time of his death in 2016, he had produced over 850 sheets of drawings, many of which have never been published. These were acquired by Seaforth and this title is the fourth of a planned series of albums on selected themes, reproducing complete sheets at a large page size, with expert commentary and captioning. Includes 100 line drawings & 50 b/w photos.

The book takes some 30 large sheets of drawings which John Lambert completed of these vessels and divides into two sections. The first part tells how the fishing fleet came to be an integral part of the Royal Navy's pre-1914 plans and details some of the activities and actions of trawlers and drifters at war in 1914-18. And the second investigates the armed fishing fleet in the struggle of 1939-45.

Trawlers and drifters served in both world wars in their thousands; and, in their tens of thousands, so did their fishermen crews. Indeed, these humble craft were the most numerous vessel type used by the Royal Navy in both wars, and were the answer to the strategic or tactical conundrums posed by new technology of mines and submarines. In his accompanying text, Steve Dunn examines the ships themselves, their design, construction, arming, operations, and development; and he also relates how the trawlermen and skippers, from the age-old fishing ports of Grimsby, Hull, Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, Aberdeen, and Fleetwood, came to be part of the Royal Navy, and describes the roles they played, the conditions they served under and the bravery they showed.

These wonderfully detailed drawings, which are backed by a selection of photographs and a detailed complementary text, offer a superb technical archive for enthusiasts and ship modelers, but the book also tells a fascinating story of the extraordinary contribution the vessels and their crews made to the defeat of Germany in two world wars. 1 vol, 208 pgs 2022 UK, SEAFORTH PUBLISHING

1-209800 Motyka, Mariusz The Light Cruiser Yahagi - Super Drawings in 3D series Another fine Kagero book in the series.

Yahagi, the second Japanese warship of that name, was the third of the four Agano-class vessels (the other three being Agano, Noshiro and Sakawa). Construction of the Agano-class cruisers was approved by the Japanese parliament (Diet) in March 1939 under the Fourth Naval Armaments Enhancement Program (Dai-Yon-Ji Kaigun Gunbi Jujitsu Keikaku), also known as 'Four-in-Circle' Program (Maru Yon Keikaku), or simply Maru 4.

Under the terms of the program, the four light cruisers (kei jun'yokan), also referred to as type B cruisers (otsu-gata jun'yokan, or simply otsu jun) and officially classed as second-class cruisers (ni-to jun'yokan), were to fulfill the role of destroyer squadron flagships. At that time destroyer squadrons (DesRon), called literarily torpedo squadrons (suirai sentai), consisted of four four-ship destroyer divisions (DesDiv, or kuchiku-tai).

1-219850 Motyka, Mariusz THE JAPANESE DESTROYER SUZUTSUKI: 1945 Suzutsuki was the third ship from the series of the most powerful Akizuka destroyers, designed specifically as anti-aircraft defense ships, whose main armament consisted of eight universal 100 mm caliber guns with excellent ballistic characteristics.

The Akizuia destroyers were designed before the beginning of World War II as anti-aircraft ships for fast Japanese groups of aircraft carriers. They were completely different from the previous Japanese destroyers, in which the emphasis was put on strong artillery (127 mm guns) and torpedo armament. They were inspired by the British Dido class light anti-aircraft cruisers, however, in contrast with them, the Akizuka destroyers were medium size ships intended for anti-aircraft defense of groups of fleet. 1-203170 O'Hara, Vincent TO CROWN THE WAVES: The Great Navies of the First World War The only comparative analysis available of the great navies of World War I, this work studies the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom, the German Kaiserliche Marine, the United States Navy, the French Marine Nationale, the Italian Regia Marina, the Austro-Hungarian Kaiserliche und Konigliche Kriegsmarine, and the Imperial Russian Navy to demonstrate why the war was won, not in the trenches, but upon the waves. It explains why these seven fleets fought the way they did and why the war at sea did not develop as the admiralties and politicians of 1914 expected.

After discussing each navy's goals and circumstances and how their individual characteristics impacted the way they fought, the authors deliver a side-by-side analysis of the conflict's fleets, with each chapter covering a single navy. Parallel chapter structures assure consistent coverage of each fleet-history, training, organization, doctrine, materiel, and operations-and allow readers to easily compare information among the various navies.

The book clearly demonstrates how the naval war was a collision of 19th century concepts with 20th century weapons that fostered unprecedented development within each navy and sparked the evolution of the submarine and aircraft carrier. The work is free from the national bias that infects so many other books on World War I navies. As they pioneer new ways of viewing the conflict, the authors provide insights and material that would otherwise require a massive library and mastery of multiple languages. Such a study has special relevance today as 20th-century navies struggle to adapt to 21st-century technologies. 1 vol, 360 pgs 2012 US, US NAVAL INSTITUE PRESS

Embarked on an extensive new phase of development, the Soviet Navy is the subject of much concern and controversy in the Western world. The Soviet Navy has the world's largest number of warships and is second only to that of the United States in total displacement. While numerical comparisons can sometimes by instructive, the author warns that they can also be misleading, since the Soviet Navy constructs different types of ships based on different rationales and for different missions using different tactics. 1 vol, 344 pgs 1983 US, NAVAL INSTITUTE PRESS

1-211510 Roberts. John THE BATTLESHIP DREADNOUGHT: Anatomy of the Ship Launched in 1906, HMS Dreadnought was the first 'all-big-gun' battleship and as such revolutionized battleship design for more than a generation. She was built at Portsmouth in 14 months, a record which has never been equaled, and when she was launched she was superior in both firepower and speed to anything then afloat.

Perhaps even more radical than her design was the proposal to adopt Parsons turbines, which at the time had been hardly tested. Though she saw little action during her career, her influence was profound and she gave her name to a class of ship that dominated the high seas for more than a generation.

These DEs proved so successful against Soviet submarines that the US Navy committed additional resources to refining the capability of passive towed array sonars. The development of the Towed Array Surveillance System (TASS), the Surveillance Towed Array Sonar System (SURTASS) and the Tactical Towed Array Sonar (TACTASS) deployable systems were direct follow-ons to ITASS. 1-236340 Ross, Al THE DESTROYER: CAMPBELTOWN The destroyer Campbeltown is not only famous for her part in the commando raid on the St. Nazaire dry dock in 1942, but is also representative of an important type. Built as the USS Buchanan (DD131), she was one of over 270 flush-decked destroyers put into service toward the end of World War I. Sent to Great Britain under the Lend-Lease program and renamed Campbeltown, she spent 18 arduous months on convoy duty before being selected for a hazardous mission to deny the Nazi warship Tirpitz the use of repair facilities at the French port of St. Nazaire.

During the desperate but successful operation, the Campbeltown rammed the port's lock gates. Eleven hours later, delayed action fuses set off four-tons of explosives that destroyed both the ship and the docks. Over 200 perspective and 3-view drawings accompany the in-depth description of this distinguished ship along with a large-scale plan on the jacket cover's reverse that is new with this reprint. 1 vol, 127 pgs 1990 US, NAVAL INSTITUTE PRESS

1-206400 Ross, David WARSHIPS IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF STEAM: An Illustrated Guide to Great Warships from 1860 to 1945 The great era of the steam warship was from the mid-1860s to the mid-1940s-an 80-year period in which a huge variety of large ships was built, ever-greater in size, firepower, and technical sophistication.

Capital ships were the most expensive and destructive weaponry prior to the atomic bomb, and their development can be traced decade by decade. Arranged in chronological order, the book provides concise coverage of the most famous warships of the period, including HMS Devastation, the first seagoing turreted ship; the Chinese Ting Yuen, sunk at the Battle of Wei-Hai-Wei in 1894; Mikasa and Retvizan, which fought each other at the Battle of the Yellow Sea in 1904; HMS Indomitable, Nassau, and HMS Lion, which all fought at the Battle of Jutland in 1916; HMS Prince of Wales, which took part in the hunt for the Bismarck, and was eventually sunk by Japanese air attack off the coast of Malaya in December 1941; and the Tirpitz, which remained a constant threat to Allied shipping in the North Atlantic until it was sunk by aerial bombers in a Norwegian fjord in late 1944.

Filled with colorful artworks, expertly-written background text, and useful specifications of 100 warships, this is a visually lavish guide to major fighting ships from 1860 to 1945. 110 color illustrations and photos. 1 vol, 224 pgs 2014 UK, AMBER BOOKS

1-219010 Samuel, Mardsen THE GERMAN ARMOURED CRUISER SMS BLUCHER The SMS Blucher was the last armored cruiser built by the German Empire. She was constructed to counter the new armored cruisers rumored as being built by the British. Blucher was larger than preceding armored cruisers and carried heavier guns but was unable to match the size and armament of the battlecruisers which replaced armored cruisers in the British Royal Navy and - later - the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine).

When the Germans learned of the true details of these new British ships, called Invincible class, and that they were to be armored with 12-inch battleship guns, they realized that the Invincible class was a completely new type of warship, soon to be known as battlecruisers. By the time the Germans learned of this it was too late to turn back and construction of the Blucher took place as scheduled. The ship was named after the Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard von Blucher, the commander of the Prussian forces at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. 1-209560 Skwiot, Miroslaw THE JAPANESE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS SORYU AND HIRYU Oversized at 8.25x11.5, with 82 archive photos, 30 drawings, and 16 color profiles.

Hiryu was the second aircraft carrier included in The Second Naval Armaments Supplement Program of 1934. Originally both carriers were supposed to be sister vessels, but the number of design modifications introduced during the construction of Soryu resulted in many differences between the two. According to the original plans, Hiryu was to be completed a year after Soryu, but her construction (similarly to her predecessor) suffered delays caused by two key factors.

The first one was the implementation of the lessons learned during the reconstruction of Kaga, which was going on simultaneously with Hiryu's construction. Then there was new data available from the early service days of Soryu, which exposed some of the design's drawbacks and weaknesses. The number of issues popping up along the way was further increased by the Fourth Fleet Incident and by Japan's withdrawal from the previously signed naval treaties.

Considering all those issues, it is not hard to imagine the inevitable impact they had on Hiryu's original design and construction schedule. The greatest source of delays was undoubtedly the aftermath of the Fourth Fleet Incident, which forced the Navy Aviation Bureau to introduce changes in the design of the second carrier. After the new requirements had been implemented, Hiryu's final design (known as the Basic Project G-10) finally emerged. 1 vol, 100 pgs 2015 POLAND, KAGERO

1-235580 Stanglini, Ruggero and Michele Consentino THE FRENCH FLEET: Ships, Strategy and Operations 1870-1918 Oversized at 11x8.5 inches, this provides a complete overview of the French Navy from the establishment of the Third Republic to the end of World War One. French foreign and naval policy, shipyards and industrial organization, technological innovations, operations, and shipbuilding programs are all described in the first part of the volume, while the second and larger part is focused on the different categories of warships, including their qualitative and quantitative evolution during the period of 1871-1918 and their employment during the Great War. A chapter is also dedicated to naval aviation. Superbly illustrated with rare and carefully selected photographs -- Includes 230 illustrations.

At the end of the 1870-1 Franco-Prussian war, the French Navy began to reconstruct its fleet, replacing old generation warships with steam-powered and iron-hulled men-of-war. However, the process was slow and erratic since priority was initially given to the Army. Additionally, the establishment of the Third Republic led to a long period of political and economic instability which affected naval and shipbuilding policy. French naval yards and private shipyards were committed to build a fleet of ironclads, cruisers and minor vessels and led France to become the second European naval power, at least quantitatively.

The rise of the Jeune Ecole (Young School) strategic naval concept in the early 1880s then changed shipbuilding priorities, and emphasis was given to coastal torpedo boats and cruisers while the construction of battleships was slowed. As a consequence, the French Navy implemented the dreadnought concept later than Great Britain and Germany. The 1904 Entente Cordiale contributed to yet further radical changes to foreign, naval, and shipbuilding policies, so that at the outbreak of World War One the French fleet was populated with limited dreadnoughts, many obsolete armored cruisers, an impressive array of torpedo boats, and a fleet of submarines whose efficiency was however questionable. 1 vol, 320 pgs 2022 UK, SEAFORTH PUBLISHING

Faced with a growing threat posed by the Imperial Japanese Navy, the Russians saw an urgent need to build up their naval forces in the region. On February 20, 1898, Emperor Nicholas II approved a supplementary ship-building program for the Far East, which would see the construction of six 5,000 - 6,000 ton cruisers in addition to ships already being built under the 1895 program. 1-239310 Sullivan, David M and Dirk Nottelmann FROM IRONCLADS TO DREADNOUGHTS: The Development of the German Battleship, 1864-1918 Following unification in 1871, the development of the Imperial German Navy mirrored the rise of Germany as a technical power. Still, such a rise needed more than just technical ability - it required considerable political will and economic resources. The early chapters cover the initial purchase of ships from abroad, the switch to German shipyards, and the hesitant attempts of Emperor Wilhelm II to develop the navy. The later chapters present the fundamental changes after Alfred von Tirpitz became naval minister in 1897. They focus on the history of the various classes of ships, from their inception to the wide variety of design influences, through their history in service and individual fates. The text is accompanied by an abundant selection of illustrations, photographs, maps and tables sourced from the vast Federal Archives at Freiburg and several private archives. 1 vol, 504 pgs 2023 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

HMS Dreadnought, launched in 1906, instantly made every other battleship obsolete. Though only a single major dreadnought battle was ever fought, at Jutland in 1916, the race continued after the Great War. The sheer expense drove the leading naval powers to the conference table to limit the size of ships and fleets, providing an opening for pariah nations, the soon-to-be Axis, to leap ahead in battleship design, only to be overtaken by greater Allied shipbuilding capacity and the maturation of the aircraft carrier. 1 vol, 48 pgs 2020 US, DECISION GAMES

The middle of the 20th century was dominated by the aircraft carrier, and they remain a fixture in major navies to this day. The aircraft of the day were only good for observation, but in that role they gave a fleet eyes beyond the horizon for the first time in history. As aircraft became more powerful, the carrier challenged, then supplanted, the battleship as queen of the sea. 1-ATO2018 various AGAINST THE ODDS 2018 ANNUAL: Sea Monsters! (Naval Wargames) Iron and Fire is a moderate level complexity game covering the battles fought by the Peruvian Ironclad Huascar during the 1879 War of the Pacific against Chile. It basically outclassed everything it met and gobbled them up...until Chile concentrated their ships. Multiple scenarios.

First Strike is a solo game that looks at the first strike by carrier aircraft in military history, the British air raid on Christmas Day, 1914, against Cuxhaven. Using seaplane tenders and seaplanes, the goal was to not just strike at the Zeppelin sheds, but also hopefully lure out, engage, and destroy any elements of the Imperial German Navy that came out to strike back at the raiders. Includes air strike and sea battles involving Zepplins, U-boats, and capital ships.

Under Ten Flags starts early in 1939 when the German merchant raider Atlantis made its way into the South Atlantic to sink and capture Allied cargo vessels. Its crew used their skill in disguising the appearance of the vessel to aid its encounters or avoid enemy warships. The journey of the raider Atlantis lasted for almost two years, traveling over 100,000 miles in 602 days.

XXI is a solitaire game set in 1943 that challenges the player (acting as both Armaments Minister Speer and Grand Adm Donitz) to organize and complete construction of a fleet (or at least 'enough') of the new German Type XXI submarine -- then unleash the wonder weapon on the Allied convoys. However, this new sub is far larger, more complex, expensive, and resource and manpower intensive than previous submarines. Just a few of these new Type XXIs will do nothing. Only a radical transformation in shipbuilding techniques to mass produce the design - backed by the ruthless will to succeed - will enable this 'wonder weapon' to arrive in time...

Includes magazine with articles on Seapower Through the Ages, Huascar, Cuxhaven, 'Modernizing' Wargames, Eastern Front: Napoleon and Hitler, Analysis of ATO's Pocket Battle Games (Postcard Games), and Designing Games Tips and Techniques.

1-200060 West, Howard F. IRON MEN WOODEN BOATS: The Epic Story of American PT Boats in World War II As the Japanese advanced in the spring of 1942, US Adm. Ernest King sought to counter enemy naval power with whatever ships he could gather -- including small, inexpensive, and expendable PT boats armed with torpedoes.

The heart of this book consists of naval combat narrative: Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Bougainville, the Mediterranean sea, the English Channel, and the Philippines - historic operations in which the PT boats would win fame, glory, and a place in history.

The author, who served on a PT boat from Rendova in the Solomons to Morotai Island, recreates hair-raising operations on ink-black nights, stalking the vaunted Tokyo Express off Guadalcanal, making high-speed torpedo attacks on massive ships, and exchanging gunfire with heavily armed Japanese motorized supply barges off the New Guinea coast. He uses his experience, official records, essays by Japanese naval officers, and various memoirs of individual officers on both sides to reveal both sides of the struggle. 1 vol, 540 pgs 2005 US, HERITAGE BOOKS

1-209550 Wilkie, Andrew SMS VIRIBUS UNITIS: Austro-Hungarian Battleship Tegetthoff Class In 1907 the navy of the dualist, multinational Austro-Hungarian Empire placed an order for a new class of warships, whose design was based on the 'all big gun' concept pioneered by HMS Dreadnought. Eventually four Tegetthoff-class vessels were laid down, including the flagship Viribus Unitis, Tagetthoff, Prinz Eugen, and Szent Istvan.

The last warship of the class was not completed until well into World War I. The vessels' careers were not especially eventful. They spent most of their service lives as a fleet in being anchored in a well-protected port of Pola with only occasional trips to the Fazana Channel (well-screened by Brijuni Islands) for gunnery practice. During the war the ships were manned mainly by reservists, while the most promising and experienced members of their crews were detached to serve onboard submarines or torpedo boats, or assigned to land-based units. The second ship of the class ended her career in rather dramatic circumstances, which is why she perhaps deserves a more detailed treatment.

Viribus Unitis was laid down at San Marco on July 23, 1910 and launched on June 24, 1911. The Emperor's court used the occasion to organize a lavish celebration designed to carry a strong political message. The Emperor insisted that the battleship be given a rather unusual, Latin name Viribus Unitis (Strength in Unity - the Emperor's personal motto). 1 vol, 73 pgs 2015 POLAND, KAGERO
