1-726523 Scarrow, Simon REVENGE OF ROME: Eagles of the Empire 23 Novel. The rebel horde has been defeated. But the leader, Boudica, and her remaining warriors are still at large. With them is the eagle standard of the Ninth Legion, taken in ambush, flaunted as proof that Rome can yet be beaten. The embers of rebellion are still glowing . . .

The toll has been heavy, with countless men lost, and major towns in ruins. The bodies of the dead are strewn across the streets. And for Centurion Macro, there is the scarring knowledge that his mother perished in the attack on Londinium.

As Macro's heart burns for revenge, he and his comrade-in-arms Prefect Cato are tasked with hunting down the remnants of the enemy army. There can be no peace until the queen is captured or killed. And Roman honour will only be restored when the eagle standard has been recovered.1 vol, 429 pgs 2024 UK, HEADLINE BOOKS

1-914042G Bey, Frederic VAE VICTUS BOARD GAME #42: Avec Infini Regret IV French Wars of Religion, 1562 - 1598 -- The Battles of Jarnac 1569 and Arques 1569 Jarnac: March 13, 1569
The Protestant rearguard led by Admiral de Coligny is threatened by the entire Catholic army crossing the Charente near Jarnac. The heavily outnumbered Huguenots put up a desperate fight. Threatened with being turned on their right, the Protestants retreated in good order. Conde, at the head of 300 lances, threw himself into the battle to delay the enemy's advance. The gendarmes only managed to push the Catholics back for a short time. At the height of the charge, Conde was unhorsed and immobilized -- he handed his sword to a Catholic gentleman as a sign of surrender. In control of the battlefield, the Royal Army was unable to capitalize on this victory.

Arques: September 21, 1589
Henri IV is waiting near Dieppe for reinforcements and money from England. The Ligueurs, led by the Duke of Mayenne, wish to prevent this landing and attack the royal troops entrenched at the junction of two valleys. The Ligueurs' attack, led by cavalry on the front and lansquenets on the left wing, broke through the Royalists' solid defenses. The latter counter-attacked and drove the enemy back to their original positions. With no way of breaking through the defenses, the Ligueurs withdrew, leaving the victory to the King.

1-902029 O'Neil, James THE NINE YEARS WAR 1593-1603: Part 1 -- The Ascendancy of Irish Arms and the Road to Yellow Ford, 1593-1598 Recounts Ireland's near-expulsion of English rule, led by Hugh O'Neill's remarkable Irish confederation. Examines the years of Irish triumph as English nonchalance turned to disbelief and then panic as Irish armies engaged with and defeated all attempts by the Crown to restore English authority. While the English fought a shooting war in the west of Ulster, an unprecedented confederation of Irish lords mounted a concerted and coordinated effort to eject English power from Ireland once and for all. The battle at Yellow Ford remains the greatest defeat given to the English by Irish arms and a striking reverse to a period often seen as Elizabeth's Golden Age. 1-912124 Abram, Andrew SUPPLYING THE NEW MODEL ARMY: Logistics, Arms, Ammunition, Clothing, Victuals and the Materiel of War, 1645-1646 Recent research reveals the New Model Army's reliance on a centralized supply system from London, challenging the plunder-focused view. The creation, politics, religious identity, officer corps and military campaigns (especially the Battle of Naseby) of the New Model Army, commanded by Sir Thomas Fairfax, have been the focus for various writers, however little attention has been paid to the supply and logistics of this force. The result has been a critical gap in the understanding of the recruitment, victualing, ordnance, ammunition, clothing, arming, and logistics employed by the Committee of the Army in both the initial establishment of the New Model and its subsequent campaigns. The methods of sustaining this military force of up to 17,000 men in the field necessarily called for a largely centralized system which operated at an increasing distance from London and the army's headquarters at Reading. Challenges the prevailing view that Fairfax's troops increasingly relied upon local sources during 1645 and 1646, rather than an organized system of supply from London manufacturers and other commercial means. Contains six black and white illustrations, 10 black and white photos, and 47 tables.1 vol, 314 pgs 2025 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-905141 Burns, Alexander S INFANTRY IN BATTLE: 1733-1783 Reexamines 18th-century warfare, highlighting enlisted soldiers' adaptability, tactical influence, and pivotal battlefield roles. Argues that 18th-century soldiers informally negotiated authority with their officers on the battlefield by firing without orders, firing at longer ranges than their officers preferred, and by taking cover on the battlefield. In this process, these enlisted men played an important role by asserting tactical reforms from below. Grounded in archival research on the American, British, and Prussian armies but also covers the armies of military Europe more broadly, and includes writings from Austrian, French, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish soldiers. Contains 20 black and white illustrations and maps, 3 tables, and 3 graphs.1 vol, 244 pgs 2025 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

4-223160 Duffy, Christopher INSTRUMENT OF WAR: Volume 1 -- The Austrian Army in the Seven Years War Examines how an army of the 18th Century worked. Covers the structure of the army, the life of its soldiers, its strengths and weaknesses, the personalities that gave it such a unique character, from top to bottom. Not only is the Austria of Maria Theresa examined, but views appear of Prussian opponents and French, Swedish, and Russian armies.

Conscription, taxation, constitutional change, bureaucracy, logistics, all of these dominated countries that never witnessed a campaign. Conscription tells us much about the homelands of the soldiers -- the languages they spoke, the professions they served, their willingness to serve what to many was an alien monarch. First-hand accounts explain the successes and failures of Austria at war.? 1-247680 Stanley, Peter JOHN COMPANY'S ARMIES: The Military Forces of British India 1824-57 Explores the multi-ethnic British-Indian armies under the East India Company and explains the outbreak of the 1857 Mutiny. John Company controlled much of the Indian sub-continent by 1850, victorious in all but one major war. 2-196370 Embree, Michael RADETZKY'S MARCHES: The Campaigns of 1848 and 1849 in Upper Italy Narrates the remarkable tale of how one old general quite possibly saved an empire. With iron will, great personal affection of his men, and some luck, Radetzky maintained his army, and put down the revolts. Such was the impact of the 1848 campaign, that Johann Strauss the Elder wrote the Radetzky March in the Field Marshal's honor.
