1-228300 Grant, David THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT: The Truth Behind the Death that Changed the Graeco-Persian World Forever Alexander the Great conquered the largest empire the world had ever seen while still in his twenties but fell fatally ill in Babylon before reaching 33 years old. His wife Roxanne was still pregnant with what would be his only legitimate son, so there was no clear-cut heir. The surviving accounts of his dying days differ on crucial detail, with the most popular version claiming Alexander uttered 'to the strongest' when asked to nominate a successor on his deathbed. Decades of 'civil war' ensued as Alexander's hard-won empire was torn asunder by generals in the bloody 'funeral games' his alleged final words heralded in. The fighting for supremacy inevitably led to the extermination of his bloodline.

But was Alexander really so short-sighted and irresponsible?

Presents a compelling case for the 'greatest succession cover up of all time' by deciphering and interpreting events that led to the will's erasure from history by the generals who wanted to carve up the empire for themselves.1 vol, 368 pgs 2021 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-228280 Whitby, Michael THE WARS OF JUSTINIAN I Recaps and analyzes all of Justinian I's campaigns based on a full range of sources. Examines the Roman army of the period, considering its equipment, organization, leadership, strategy and tactics, and considers the longer-term impact of Justinian's military ventures on the stability of the empire.

Justinian I was the last great conquering Roman emperor, who dramatically increased the size of his realm although he never actually led an army in person. His long reign (527-565) was devoted to the challenging project of renovatio imperii, that is the renovation of Empire. His was the will and vision behind campaigns that saw the reconquest of Rome itself and Italy from the Ostrogoths, North Africa from the Vandals, and parts of Spain from the Visigoths. These grand schemes were largely accomplished through the services of two talented generals, Belisarius and Narses, and in spite of the distractions of wars against the Persians in the east for most of his reign and the devastation caused by bubonic plague.1 vol, 304 pgs 2021 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-219584 Mugnai, Bruno WAR AND SOLDIERS IN THE EARLY REIGN OF LOUIS XIV: Volume 4: The Armies of Spain and Portugal, 1660-1687 Describes actions, organization, uniforms, and equipment of the Spanish and Portuguese armies of this age using archive's sources and unpublished iconography.

It has been a commonly held historical belief that in the second half of the 17th century, the Spanish army suffered such catastrophic defeats that it effectively brought about the collapse of the state as a major player on the European stage. The wars, fought out in Catalonia, Franche Comte, Flanders, and Italy, resulted in a series of substantial defeats for Spain.

The forces of Louis XIV carried all before them. Spain's ability to fend off the French monarch's assault was not eased by the fact that, at the same time, Spain had faced the Portuguese in the Iberian Peninsula, the English in the Caribbean, the Algerians in Melilla, as well as further insidious French assault in southern Italy and in the colonies. In this regard, it would be more correct to consider this age as a period of resilience, rather than military defeats. Equally superficially, the Portuguese War of Independence too was considered as a peripheral conflict of minor interest, while it also involved France and England in addition to the countries directly concerned.1 vol, 386 pgs 2021 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-ATO2019 various AGAINST THE ODDS 2019 ANNUAL: La Vendee 1793 Wargame This area movement game depicts the first Royalist rising in 1793, centering on the 'White' player's attempt to capture and hold Republican fortresses. If all goes well, the English may enter the fray. Meanwhile 'Blue' Republican armies attempt to overwhelm their weaker foe and implement a scorched-earth policy while partisans harry their every move. Event cards present both sides with opportunities and challenges.

Fortress siege, British intervention, and optional rule that sends Napoleon Bonaparte to the Vendee instead of Toulon are all part of the rebellion. Good for miniatures campaign use, too.

1-228340 Bruhn, David READY TO HAUL, READY TO FIGHT: U.S. Navy, Royal Australian Navy, and British Merchant Navy Cargo Ships in the Pacific in World War II U.S. Navy cargo ships, among the most unglamorous military vessels, kept the supply lines running through the incredible expanses of the Pacific battle zones in World War II. This involved shuttling cargos of gasoline, explosives, and supplies between forward bases on an erratic, unpredictable war-time schedule. The tedious days of slow cruising were broken by an occasional enemy air raid in some atoll harbor, and the rugged work of loading and unloading cargo. Although some cargo ships exhibited the informality of tramp steamers, they got results.

Cargo ships able to carry amphibious landing craft routinely steamed with other assault forces into enemy-held beachheads, and disembarked supplies and personnel under fire. A dozen or so Royal Australian Navy stores-issuing ships lived a perilous existence plying dangerous Japanese-patrolled northern Australian waters, and the coast off Papua New Guinea.

In 1945, when the British Pacific Fleet joined Allied combat operations against Japan, they brought their own 'fleet train.' This Logistics Service Force was the most extraordinary, motley collection of shipping ever assembled in British maritime history - one that included, presumably for fleet morale, a floating brewery. Includes 168 photographs, maps and diagrams; appendices; a bibliography; and an index to full names, places, and subjects add value to this work.1 vol, 394 pgs 2021 US, HERITAGE BOOKS

1-228320 Degtev, Dmitry AIR BATTLE FOR MOSCOW: 1941-1942 The book presents the air battle for Moscow, describing in detail the actions of the aircrew on both sides. On 22 July 1941, Operation Clara Zetkin, the Luftwaffe's aerial assault on Moscow, began. But the Luftwaffe was opposed by the 'Stalin's Falcons', the elite 6th Air Defence Corps, which defended the Soviet capital with a determination which saw bitter duels to the death and horrendous casualties on both sides.

Details of losses, biographical outlines of the key individuals, analyses of the different aircraft and a full chronology of the battle are presented, as well as numerous exclusive photos, documents, and drawings. Also tells of the fate of German pilots caught in Russian captivity, and the adventures of those who were able to survive and escape from the Russian executioners. Many myths concerning the battle are also challenged, such as the often-stated belief that Moscow's anti-aircraft defenses were the most powerful in the world and that it was the Soviets who were the finest pilots.1 vol, 256 pgs 2021 UK, AIR WORLD

1-228290 Nash, Douglas VICTORY WAS BEYOND THEIR GRASP: With the 272nd Volks-Grenadier Division from the Huertgen Forest to the Heart of the Reich New, revised edition.

Often confused with the Volkssturm (Home Guard militia), Volks-Grenadier Divisions have suffered an undeserved reputation as second-rate formations, filled with young boys and old men suited to serve only as cannon fodder. VGDs were conceived as a new, elite corps loyal to the National Socialist Party composed of men from all branches of Hitler's Wehrmacht and equipped with the finest ground combat weapons available.

Whether fighting from defensive positions or spearheading offensives such as the Battle of the Bulge, VGDs initially gave a good account of themselves in battle. Using previously unpublished unit records, Allied intelligence and interrogation reports and above all interviews with survivors, the author has crafted an in-depth look at a late-war German infantry company, including many photographs from the veterans themselves. In this book we follow along with the men of the 272nd VGD's Fusilier Company from their first battles in the Huertgen Forest to their final defeat in the Harz Mountains. Along the way we learn the enormous potential of VGDs . . . and feel their soldiers' heartbreak at their failure.1 vol, 416 pgs 2021 US, CASEMATE

1-228310 Neuber, Claus MARCHING FROM DEFEAT: Surviving the Collapse of the German Army in the Soviet Union, 1944 A young German artillery officer's graphic first-hand account of his escape from Soviet captivity during the Red Army's offensive on the Eastern Front in 1944. Records in day-to-day detail what such a bitter defeat was like and shows how individual soldiers somehow survived through their bravery, ingenuity and endurance. After almost 70 days as a fugitive, living in the open, depending on the kindness of villagers, enduring extremes of cold, wet and hunger, and living each day with the ever-present threat of betrayal and imprisonment, he found his way back to the German lines. Translated for the first time from the original German.1 vol, 272 pgs 2021 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-228270 Simon Forty, Patrick Hook, Nik Cornish RED ARMY INTO THE REICH A detailed narrative of how the Red Army pushed west and into Berlin in 1945. Combines campaign recaps, and contemporary photographs and maps with images of memorials, battlefield survivors, and then & now views. It may come as a surprise to the western reader to see how many memorials there are to Russia's Great Patriotic War and those to the losses suffered by the countries who spent so long under the murderous Nazi regime.

For writers and historians who concentrate on the Western Allies and the battles in France and the Low Countries, the Eastern Front comes as a shock. The sheer size of both the territories and the forces involved; the savagery of both weather and the fighting; the appalling suffering of the civilian populations of all countries and the wreckage of towns and cities-it's no wonder that words like Armageddon are used to describe the annihilation.1 vol, 256 pgs 2021 US, CASEMATE
