Elliott, Simon ROMAN BRITAIN'S MISSING LEGION: What Really Happened to IX Hispana?
Legio IX Hispana had a long and active history, later founding York from where it guarded the northern frontiers in Britain. But the last evidence for its existence in Britain comes from AD 108. The mystery of their disappearance has inspired debate and imagination for decades. The most popular theory, immortalized in Rosemary Sutcliffe's novel The Eagle of the Ninth, is that the legion was sent to fight the Caledonians in Scotland and wiped out there.
But more recent archaeology suggests a crisis, not on the border but in the heart of the province, previously thought to have been peaceful at this time. What if IX Hispana took part in a rebellion, leading to their punishment, disbandment and damnatio memoriae (official erasure from the records)? This proposed 'Hadrianic War' would then be the real context for Hadrian's visit in 122 with a whole legion, VI Victrix, which replaced the 'vanished' IX as the garrison at York. Other theories are that it was lost on the Rhine or Danube, or in the East. Simon Elliott considers the evidence for these four theories, and other possibilities.1 vol, 192 pgs

Kay-Bujak, Philip The Life of Cicero: Lessons for Today from the Greatest Orator of the Roman Republic
Cicero was Rome's greatest orator and one of the key statesmen of the late Roman Republic. He championed traditional Republican values against populist demagogues like Julius Caesar during a tumultuous period of civil war and unrest. During his term as consul, his decisive actions thwarted a plot to overthrow the Senate, controversially having the ringleaders executed. He outlived Caesar but then mounted a virulent opposition to Mark Antony, which led to Cicero's proscription and execution as an enemy of the state.
The legacy of his speeches, letters and treatises on politics, law, oratory and other subjects endured, however, and was massively influential on Latin literature and, when rediscovered in the Middle Ages, formed one of the cornerstones of the Renaissance. The period in which Cicero flourished and died was one in which democracy was under attack from radical demagoguery and Philip Kay-Bujak believes his career holds important parallels and lessons for our own times. Written in a clear and accessible style, this fresh look at Cicero's life demonstrates his relevance to a modern audience.1 vol, 368 pgs

Pace, Edwin THE LONG WAR FOR BRITANNIA 367-664: Arthur and the History of Post-Roman Britain
Recounts some two centuries of 'lost' British history while providing decisive proof that multiple early record references recorded the same events in the same year. The author demonstrates that King Arthur and Uther Pendragon are the very opposite of medieval fantasy. Current scholarly doubts arose from the fact that different British regions had very different memories of post-Roman British rulers. Some remembered Arthur as the 'Proud Tyrant,' a monarch who plunged the island into civil war. Others recalled him as the British general who saved Britain when all seemed lost. The deeds of Uther Pendragon replicate the victories of the dread Mercian King Penda. These authentic yet radically different narratives distort history to this very day. 1 vol, 400 pgs

Powell, Lindsay Marcus Agrippa: Right-Hand Man of Caesar Augustus
Marcus Agrippa personified the term 'right-hand man.' As Emperor Augustus' deputy, he waged wars, pacified provinces, beautified Rome, and played a critical role in laying the foundations of the Pax Romana for the next two hundred years - but he served always in the knowledge he would never rule in his own name. Why he did so, and never grasped power exclusively for himself, has perplexed historians for centuries.
Following Caesar's assassination on the Ides of March 44 BC, Agrippa was instrumental in asserting Caius Octavius as heir. He established a reputation as a bold admiral and proved his genius for military command on land by ending bloody rebellions in the Cimmerian Bosporus, Gaul, Hispania and Illyricum. In Gaul, Agrippa established the road network that helped turn Julius Caesar's conquests into viable provinces. As a diplomat, he befriended Herod the Great of Judaea and stabilized the East. As minister of works, he overhauled Rome's drains and aqueducts, transformed public bathing in the city, created public parks with great artworks, and built the original Pantheon.
Illustrated with color plates, figures and high quality maps, Lindsay Powell presents a penetrating new assessment of the life and achievements of the multifaceted man who put service to friend and country before himself.1 vol, 384 pgs

Syvanne, IIkka Aurelian and Probus: The Soldier Emperors Who Saved Rome
This is a narrative military history of the emperors Lucius Domitius Aurelianus and Marcus Aurelius Probus which also includes the other reigns between the years 268 and 285. It shows how these two remarkable emperors were chiefly responsible for the Empire surviving and emerging largely intact from a period of intense crisis. It was Aurelian who first united the breakaway regions, including Zenobia's Palmyra, and it was Probus who then secured his achievements.
The reigns of Aurelian and Probus have been subjected to many studies, but none of these have approached the extant material purely from the point of view of military analysis. Most importantly, the previous historians have not exploited the analytical opportunities provided by the military treatises that describe the strategy and tactics of the period Roman army. It is thanks to this new methodology that Ilkka Syvanne has been able to reconstruct the military campaigns of these two soldier emperors and their other contemporaries in far greater detail than has been possible before. 1 vol, 304 pgs

various STRATEGY & TACTICS # 344: The Great Turkish War
The Great Turkish War is a low- to intermediate-complexity, two-player, strategic-level wargame simulating the fight for the Balkans and the Eastern reaches of the Holy Roman Empire in the late 17th century. In 1683, the Ottomans launched their last major offensive on Vienna. The siege failed thanks to the timely arrival of reinforcements from Poland and the Empire. During the next decades the Holy Roman Empire, Russia, Poland, and Venice engaged the still-powerful Ottomans in the Balkans and in the Aegean. Better leadership and military advances allowed the Austrians to inflict several decisive defeats on the Ottomans and conquer most of Ottoman Hungary. For the first time in centuries, the Turks were in strategic retreat in Europe.
Each game turn represents 1 year. Each hex on the map is approximately 60 km (36 miles) from side to side. Each combat unit represents 3,000 to 6,000 combatants depending on unit type.

Dawson, Paul L French Invasions of Britain and Ireland, 1797-1798: The Revolutionaries and Spies who Sought to Topple the Government of King George
Irish dreams of independence, and of Revolutionary France's goal of securing her borders against the monarchies of Europe, coalesced. What better way of keeping Britain out of a war if her troops were tied down in Ireland? If the French could support an Irish Revolution, this would ensure the British Crown would be more focused on internal security than fighting overseas. The French, with a network of secret agents in Ireland and England, made their preparations for invasion.
A network of spies spread out across the England, Scotland, and Ireland gathering information for the French and arming radical groups. Everything was set for an invasion. But it took six years for the French to finally mount their attacks upon Britain. And when the invasions were eventually launched, they crumbled into chaos. This book seeks to charts the events that led up to the French invasion of Ireland in 1798, and how the invasion was foiled by William Pitt's own web of secret agents. William Huskisson, best known for being killed at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, led a dangerous life as a spy master, whose agents foiled the French at every step.
Drawing on documents in the French Army Archives, as well as the records of the French Foreign Ministry and The National Archives in London, the largely forgotten story of the last invasion of Britain in 1797, as well as the final act of 1798, is revealed. Key documents are the campaign diary of the French commander from 1798, General Humbert, which has never been published in French or English. This, then, is the complete untold story of the French invasions and their sabotage, told for the first time in some 200 years.1 vol, 264 pgs

Mikaberidze, Alexander and Peter Phillips The Russian Campaign of 1812: The Memoirs of a Russian Artilleryman
The first of three volumes, this book represents the first English translation of the memoirs that rank among the best in the vast Napoleonic memoir literature. The author, Ilya Timofeyevich Radozhitskii, served with distinction during the wars against Napoleon and wrote down his reminisces shortly after the war based on the notes that he kept while campaigning. Born in 1788, Radozhitskii studied at the Imperial Orphanage, enlisted in the artillery unit in 1806, and steadily rose through the ranks, earning a reputation of a capable officer. Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 changed his life. Serving as an artillery lieutenant, he saw action in virtually every major battle of that historic campaign. Wounded at the battle of Ostrovno, he remained in ranks and later fought at Smolensk, Lubino (Valutina Gora), and Borodino; lamented the surrender of Moscow; and celebrated Russian victories at Vyazma and Krasnyi. He watched in bewilderment the catastrophe that engulfed Napoleon's forces that winter, an event he vividly describes in his memoirs.
Radozhitskii offers fresh insight into the life and daily experiences of Russian officers during the Napoleonic Wars. Starting in the summer of 1812 and following the travails of his unit over the next six months, Radozhitskii's narrative contains striking descriptions of the wartime experiences of soldiers and officers, vivid accounts of the battles, and heartrending stories from the French retreat. When published in Russia, these memoirs garnered considerable public attention and Leo Tolstoy consulted them extensively while writing his famous 'War and Peace.'1 vol, 224 pgs

Mikaberidze, Alexander and Peter Phillips The German Liberation War of 1813: The Memoirs of a Russian Artilleryman
The second of three volumes, this book represents the first English translation of the memoirs that rank among the best in the vast Napoleonic memoir literature. In 1813-1814, Radozhitskii took part in the War of the German Liberation and the invasion of France, serving with distinction at Bischofswerde, Bautzen, Katzbach, and Leipzig before finishing the war as a staff captain in Paris in 1814. Upon Napoleon's return in 1815, Radozhitskii was assigned to the Russian Expeditionary Corps that was dispatched to France but arrived too late to confront Napoleon.
Radozhitskii offers fresh insight into the life and daily experiences of Russian officers during the Napoleonic Wars. This volume follows Radozhitskii across Germany as the Russian army, buoyed by the victory over Napoleon in 1812, marched on to liberate German states. Radozhitskii's narrative contains striking descriptions of the wartime experiences of soldiers and officers, vivid accounts of the battles, and heartrending stories from the French retreat. McKenna, Joseph Guerrilla War in the Easter Rising
On Easter Monday 1916, Irish rebels seized a number of strategic buildings in Dublin, including the General Post Office on O'Connell Street, and declared an Irish Republic. Within a week, they had been bombarded into surrender. Out in the countryside, amidst chaos and confusion over counter orders, the Rising failed to materialize as planned. The one notable exception was the campaign of the Fingal Brigade of North County Dublin. Their leader, the charismatic Tom Ashe, launched a fast moving guerrilla campaign against the para-military Royal Irish Constabulary, seizing barracks and capturing arms. At Ashbourne, the Irish Volunteers, having captured the RIC barracks, were faced with the arrival of a numerically superior force of armed policemen. Using tactics evolved from British army training manuals, they overcame and defeated the police. Ashe and Fingal Brigade had shown that fast moving guerrilla warfare was the way ahead in the future struggle for Irish independence.1 vol, 176 pgs

Degtev, Dmitry and Dmitry Zubov Air Battle for Leningrad: 1941-1944
The Siege of Leningrad was one of the most brutal battles of the Second World War. The second largest and most populous city in the Soviet Union, Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, was one of the three priority targets of the German invasion, Operation Barbarossa. A total of 333 large military factories were concentrated in Leningrad and, accordingly, 565,000 workers lived there, producing tanks, aircraft, artillery, and warships.
On July 10, 1941, German tank divisions, having broken through the front south of the city of Pskov, reached the town of Luga. From there, Hitler's forces had just over 110 miles to go to Leningrad. Meanwhile, the city was feverishly preparing for defense. Stalin's deputies, Zhdanov and Voroshilov, planned to use the entire combat-ready population of Leningrad for that purpose. In early September 1941, German divisions supported by the Luftwaffe's VIII Fliegerkorps, captured the town of Shlisselburg. Leningrad was now cut off from the rest of the Soviet Union. Hitler believed that the city would soon echo to the sound of German jackboots.
Leningrad, however, did not give up. In the autumn of 1941, the Wehrmacht did not have enough forces to take the city and for three long years, the main means of fighting its defenders were the Luftwaffe and long-range artillery. In September 1941, when the systematic bombing and shelling began, many thousands of families tried to leave Leningrad, but nearly all of the escape routes were cut off. Food supplies in the city sharply decreased.
In this book, the authors explore the full story of the German and Soviet aerial battles in the Leningrad sector during the siege. There are devastating details of the bombing of the starving population, numerous attempts by the Luftwaffe to destroy the Red Baltic Fleet, and air attacks against the 'Road of Life,' along which vital food and ammunition were delivered to the city, and combats in the skies over Leningrad and its surroundings. Revealing what was happening in the air and on the ground, as well as in the German and Russian headquarters, the authors explain why, in spite of numerous successes, the Luftwaffe failed to help force the surrender of Leningrad.1 vol, 328 pgs

Diamond, Jon Allied Victory Over Japan 1945: Rare Photographs from Wartime Achieves - Images of War Series
In 1944, with the war in Europe turning in the Allies' favor, Japan still occupied vast swathes of South East Asia and the Pacific. In Burma, the seemly unstoppable Japanese advance was halted at Kohima and Imphal in June and July 1944. Six months later, the advances made by British-led forces enabled the re-opening of the supply routes from India to US forces in China. It was not until Spring 1945 that British-led forces seized first Mandalay and then the port city of Rangoon after a year of grueling fighting.
Admiral Nimitz's and General MacArthur's forces meanwhile were overcoming fanatical Japanese resistance as they invaded Saipan, Guam, Tinian, Leyte, and Luzon in late 1944. Iwo Jima and Okinawa fell to the Allies in early 1945. These successes enabled USAAF Superfortresses to bomb mainland Japan. Late Spring/early Summer 1945 saw the steady recapture of the Northern Solomons and Brunei, Borneo, and former Dutch colonies. The atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 finally forced the Japanese to surrender without the inevitable carnage of an invasion of their mainland.
The tumultuous events of the final year of the Second World War in the Far East are brilliantly described here in contemporary well captioned images and succinct text.1 vol, 232 pgs

Klapa, Hans and Alfred Kriehn Facing the Red Army in Festung Posen: First-Hand Accounts of German Soldiers on the Eastern Front in 1945
Facing the Red Army in Festung Posen features the stories of two German soldiers who took part in the battles for Festung Posen (Poznan Fortress) in January and February 1945. Never before published in English, the accounts of Hans Klapa, written immediately after the war (1946) and Alfred Kriehn, a little later (early 1990s) provide details relating to the course of the battle, as well as the armaments of the German garrison, its morale, and even first-hand descriptions of individual actions during bloody street fighting.
Although describing the same battle, both memoirs are completely different as they represent different branches of the armed forces and each takes place in different parts of the city. While Hans Klapa fought only in the eastern part, Alfred Kriehn describes the fighting on the western side. However, what separates the two accounts the most is the fate of both heroes immediately after the battle, with Klapa describing his epic, months-long struggle with his comrades not to fall into the hands of the enemy and to avoid being taken prisoner by the Soviets at any cost.1 vol, 208 pgs

McKay, John R Arctic Convoy PQ18: 25 Days That Changed the Course of the War
This book tells the story of one of the most significant maritime operations of the Second World War - the importance of the Arctic convoys providing the Soviets with the necessary equipment needed to win the war on the Eastern Front has too often been underestimated.
Following PQ17, the worst Allied maritime disaster of the Second World War, it was imperative that PQ18 got through. So when the convoy left Loch Ewe on September 2, 1942, the stakes could not have been higher. The Battle of Stalingrad was hanging in the balance. Had the convoy suffered unacceptable shipping and war supply losses, the Arctic route would have had to be suspended with potentially war-changing consequences - not just for the Soviets, but the whole Allied war effort. Consequently, as this work vividly describes, it was both the most heavily defended and the most heavily attacked convoy of the whole war.
The author draws on contemporaneous accounts of the combatants from both sides including U-boat crews, airmen and, of course, the crews of the warships and merchantmen. Offering newly discovered facts about the convoy's turbulent passage, this book is a valuable addition to the history of the campaign which will appeal to historians and laymen alike.1 vol, 208 pgs

Sarkar, Dilip The Breaking Storm: 10 July 1940 - 12 August 1940
In The Breaking Storm, the first of Dilip Sarkar's unprecedented seven-volume series exploring the Battle of Britain, the events that led up to the outbreak of war in 1939, and which set the scene for the epic aerial conflict of summer 1940, are fully explored. The author provides a day-by-day chronicle of the Battle of Britain's first phase - the so-called Kanalkampf - which was fought over the Channel-bound convoys between July 10 and August 12, 1940. This account, though, does not simply concern RAF Fighter Command, as the author recognizes the operations and efforts of the RAF's Bomber and Coastal commands, the Royal Navy, and mercantile marines - making this book part of what he calls 'the Big story.'
Hitler's actual policies and intentions toward the ongoing war with Britain are also explored. If the Battle of Britain was fought to deny Germany the aerial superiority required to launch a seaborne invasion of southern England, then, the author argues, the conflict could surely only have begun when the Germans committed to Operation Seelowe - which was not until July 21, 1940. It has previously been accepted that Hitler's War Directive of July 16, 1940 signaled the intention to invade, but the author proves that this was no more than another example of the brinkmanship that Hitler was renowned for, which was intended to frighten Britain into accepting the Fuhrer's 'last appeal to reason' of July 19, 1940.
In his broadcast of July 22, 1940, Lord Halifax made the nation's unbowed position quite clear. He called Hitler's bluff: previously reluctant to fight Britain, Hitler's preferred policy in the ongoing war had been blockade and diplomacy - but now he had no choice but to unleash the Luftwaffe against Britain. All of this is investigated in detail, aligning these wider events and high decisions with action in the air. Through diligent research, combined with crucial official primary sources and personal papers, Dilip unravels many myths, often challenging the accepted narrative. Drawing upon unique first-hand accounts from a wide-range of combatants and eyewitnesses, along with Daily Home Intelligence Reports and numerous other primary sources, this book forms part of what is likely to be the first and last such comprehensively woven account of this epic air battle.1 vol, 344 pgs

Sterne, Gary The Americans and Germans at Bastogne: First-Hand Accounts from the Commanders Who Fought
In December 1944, the Third Reich was retreating. It was almost inconceivable that they could mount a counter offensive. Could the Battle of the Bulge succeed in turning the tide of the war for the German high command? The US 101st Airborne were the only Allied unit capable of slowing down the German advance towards Antwerp - and they were ordered to do just that - at a place called Bastogne.
The battle for the small Belgium cross-roads town is now world famous, and to add to that historical narrative, the author has located declassified interviews with the German unit commanders who took part. Brought together for the first time, they provide a unique perspective on the battle as the Germans were forced to make continuous alterations to their plans, and the 101st resisted every attempt to dislodge them.1 vol, 304 pgs

Sandler, Efim Battle for Grozny: Volume 1 - Prelude and the Way to the City, 1994
After a declaration of independence and the seizure of military assets located in the self-proclaimed Republic of Ichkeria, Chechen influence in the Northern Caucuses region was rapidly growing. By 1994, the Russian leadership became very concerned about the situation when, in addition to the other issues, Dzhokhar Dudaev took control of the oil and gas pipelines. It was decided to launch a limited armed action, targeted upon the overthrow of Dudaev at the hands of Russian-sponsored opposition. The opposition eventually failed, and a large military operation by Russian forces was launched on December 9, 1994.
From the first days, Russian troops, totally unprepared for the tough resistance encountered, found themselves in a bloody fight against Dudaev's well-trained and heavily-armed militants. Grozny was the major objective as the Russian command considered taking over the city would break Chechen resistance at once. To pave the way to the city, the Russians had to secure Khankala airfield, as it was the major aerial hub of the area. The fight for Khankala became the first major engagement between Russian and Chechen forces. On December 30, 1994, Russian forces received orders to enter Grozny and take control of key objectives, eliminating the opposition. In the second half of December 31, Russian armored convoys started to enter the city from four directions. What was to come next became the most horrible night in modern Russian military history.1 vol, 78 pgs

Yeske, William Damn the Valley: 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 2/508 PIR, 82nd Airborne in the Arghandab River Valley Afghanistan
'DAMN THE VALLEY' was a phrase regularly uttered by the men that spent any amount of time in the Arghandab River Valley during the deployment of 2 Fury to Afghanistan in 2009-2010. The valley has claimed bodies from the troops of Alexander the Great, the British Empire, and more recently, the Russian Army. Operating in the valley was like nothing the men could have envisaged - they called it the 'meat grinder.'
It was a deployment that the media didn't talk about, and the government doesn't acknowledge. Three of the company were KIA, more than a dozen suffered life-changing injuries, and half the company had Purple Hearts-not many modern-day deployments have a 52% casualty rate. At one point, the entire prosthetics ward at Walter Reed was full of the men who patrolled that deadly area of the world.
Since their return, many of the survivors have struggled to move on with their lives, and the unit has been declared at 'extraordinary risk' by the Department of Veteran Affairs. No one who entered that region was left unscathed. This book shares the perspective of the men that were on the ground for that deployment during the fighting season of 2010.1 vol, 256 pgs
