1-228840 Chaivie, Frederic THE NEW KNIGHTS: The Development of Cavalry in Western Europe, 1562-1700 From the middle of the 16th century to the early years of the 18th century, cavalry experienced significant changes in doctrine, deployment, and the equipment it used. The Men-at-Arms, carrying lances and arranged in large formations, were replaced by more lightly-armed cavalrymen fighting with swords and pistols in new and more flexible tactical formations. Includes 85 b/w illustrations, 7 b/w maps, and 5 diagrams.

These transformations have often been interpreted as a symbol of decline in the cavalry, an archaic arm, a conservator of chivalric values, incapable of adapting to the new transformations in the art of war. This book aims to deconstruct this simplifying vision by focusing on an analysis of what constitutes the principal combat action of heavy cavalry: the charge. While centered on France, this study refers to the whole of Europe. The battlefields of the French Wars of Religion to the War of the Spanish Succession are examined in detail, along with the types of cavalry, their equipment and how they performed on the battlefield.1 vol, 242 pgs 2021 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-228850 Crowdy, Terry FRENCH LIGHT INFANTRY 1784-1815: From the Chasseurs of Louis XVI to Napoleon's Grande Armee Explores the origins of the light infantry in the century before Napoleon came to power. From bands of irregular partisans, to sharpshooters and scouts, the book follows France's early experiments with this arm. Drawing on contemporary documents, including the French parliamentary archives, this book charts the expansion of the light infantry arm, reviews the reasons behind organizational changes, and analyses the tactics employed by light infantry in meticulous detail. Lavishly illustrated, this book is an essential reference for students and hobbyists of the Napoleonic Wars. Includes 66 b/w illustrations, 24 pages of color plates, and 23 tables.

In 1792 France unleashed a new form of warfare in Europe. Faced with the well-drilled Austrian and Prussian armies, the French introduced the tactic of mass skirmishing by tirailleurs. Soldiers were thrown forwards and told to fight in open order. Moving quickly and making use of cover, they fired on the enemy line, annoying it, goading it, and all the time distracting it from the infantry columns coming up behind, bristling with bayonets, ready for the charge and a shock action. Of these tirailleurs, the best were the professional chasseur light infantry battalions, raised and trained in the army of Louis XVI; but they were too few in number. A patriotic appeal for light infantry volunteers was made, and within two years the original twelve battalions became ninety strong.

By the time of Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, there were 185 battalions of light infantry in service, with hundreds of voltigeur light companies attached to the regular line infantry battalions. Although all infantrymen could fight as tirailleurs, specialist light infantry did it best, and were clearly an important part of Napoleon's armies.1 vol, 198 pgs 2021 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-PWAR098 PAPER WARS: Issue 98 - First Blood in the Crimea: The Battle of the Alma Contains wargame First Blood in the Crimea: The Battle of the Alma, 20 September 1854 by Ty Bomba. Each large hex on the 34?22-inch map equals 300 yards (275 meters). Each of the 10 game turns represent 30 to 60 minutes of real time. The units of maneuver are battalions and regiments. Artillery is represented abstractly via bombardment markers. There is one full sheet of 228 medium-size (5/8-inch) counters. Complexity is low-intermediate.

The battle was the first clash of the Crimean War, fought only a few days after the French, British and Turks had landed on the peninsula and began marching on Sevastopol. Both sides threw in everything they had, hoping for a quick and decisive victory. That made for a day of fierce back and forth combat, which was characterized by both soldier-level heroism and high-command incompetence. In the end the Russians retreated, but it was a near-run thing that could've gone either way.1 vol, 64 pgs 2021 US, COMPASS GAMES

1-PWAR099 PAPER WARS: Issue 99 - Assault on Tobruk, Rommel Triumphant, 20 June, 1942 Wargame: Assault on Tobruk, Rommel Triumphant, 20 June, 1942, designed by Stephen Newberg

The map cover the entire fortress of Tobruk pat its perimeter strong points in hexes equaling about 670 meters across. Double impulse turns represent two hours and most units are of company size. Seven scenarios are provided; one of the historical action and the other six 'what if' examining the various effects of improved Allied command control, tactics, and artillery coordination, as well as various alternate attack plans for the Axis forces. Low complexity.

From march to December of 1941 the forces of Rommel's Afrika Korp surrounded the Allied held fortress port of Tobruk on the Libyan coast of North Africa, but were unable to subdue it. On the 20th of June in 1942, Rommel got another chance at a cut off Tobruk as the Allies retreated from the loss of the Gazala line battles. This time Tobruk fell, and it did so in a swirling action lasting less than a single day.1 vol, 64 pgs 2021 US, COMPASS GAMES

1-228860 Badri-Maharaj, Sanjay ARMED FORCES OF THE ENGLISH SPEAKING CARIBBEAN: The Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago Covers from the post-WWII West India Regiment to the independence of the former British Colonies in the 1960s and 1970s. The failed West India Federation led directly to the formation of the national armed forces of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados while Guyana's forces had their roots in Police Special Services Units and a Volunteer Force. Shortly after Independence, Guyana's armed forces found themselves in a border conflict with Suriname as well as a far less salubrious operation to support a corrupt and racist government through rigged elections. Trinidad found itself facing a mutiny in the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment, redemption only coming for the force in 1990 when it played a stellar role in quelling an Islamist insurrection. Barbados and Jamaica's armed forces had a more subdued history, supporting police forces but playing an important role in the intervention in Grenada in 1983. The Bahamas, unique in having a naval force as its primary military unit, had the dubious distinction of having one of its patrol boats sunk by Cuban MiG-21s in 1980.

Besides the historical background to the five armed forces in question, examines the evolution, equipment, and current status and plans of these forces. This includes the complete recapitalization of the Jamaica Defence Force, the resurrection of the Bahamas Defence Force as a capable naval unit, the decline and deliberate neglect of the Guyana Defence Force and the revival and near collapse of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force.1 vol, 84 pgs 2021 UK, HELION AND COMPANY
