1-229790 Forty, Siman and Forty, Jonathan LIMITS OF EMPIRE: Rome's Borders Examines the frontiers of the Roman Empire, looking at the way they were constructed and manned and how that changed over the years. Besides the physical barriers - from the walls in Britain to the Fossatum Africae in the desert, it looks at the traders and the prices that were paid for the traffic of goods. Describes how civil settlements - vici - grew up around the forts and fortlets and what life was like for soldiers, sailors, and civilians. The book presents artifacts of the period and provides a guidebook to top Roman museums and a gazetteer of visitable sites.

By AD 117 and the accession of Hadrian, the empire had reached its peak. It held sway from Britain to Morocco, from Spain to the Black Sea. And its wealth was coveted by those outside its borders. Just as today those from poorer countries try to make their way into Europe or North America, so those outside the empire wanted to make their way into the Promised Land - for trade, for improvement of their lives, or for plunder. Thus the Roman borders became a mix - just as our borders are today - of defensive bulwark against enemies, but also control areas where import and export taxes were levied, and entrance was controlled. Some of these borders were hard such as Hadrian's Wall and the line between the Rhine and Danube. Other areas used great rivers as natural borders that the Romans policed with their navy. 1 vol, 200 pgs 2022 US, CASEAMATE PUBLISHING

1-229840 Saunders, Tim SALAMANCA CAMPAIGN 1812 After a gap of two years, the 1812 Salamanca Campaign saw Wellington taking the offensive in Spain against Marshal Marmont's Army of Portugal. Marching from the border fortress of Ciudad Rodrigo which fell to the Allies in January, neither commander was willing to take the risk of a general action without a clear tactical advantage. The result were stand-offs as Wellington offered battle on the San Christobal Heights, but once the small French-garrisoned forts left behind in Salamanca fell, Marmont withdrew to the Douro.

For over a week the two armies shared cooling waters of the river before Marmont 'humbugged' Wellington and fell on the Allied left flank at Castrejon. Wellington rushed to the aid of the Light and 4th divisions with the heavy cavalry. Over the following days Marmont dexterously maneuvered Wellington back towards Salamanca, with both armies within cannon shot still not risking battle.

When it seemed Wellington would have to march back to the safety of Portugal, Marmont finally made a mistake on the plains south of Salamanca on 22 July 1812, by allowing his army to become over extended. Wellington saw what was happening and after weeks of marching and counter marching, the battle the soldiers earnestly hoped for was on.

In the past it has been difficult to place the fighting on the ground in the center of the Salamanca battlefield, where 'vast clouds of smoke and dust that rolled along the basin' obscured vision even for those fighting. Modern geographical aids and archaeology supplement letters, diaries, and memoirs to reconcile the sequence of the battle with locations.

1-229810 Otte, Maarten THE MEUSE-ARGONNE 1918: The Right Bank to the Armistice The Americans had considerable initial success when they launched their huge offensive against the Germans in the Meuse-Argonne in the last days of September 1918. However, not everything went smoothly and the attack became bogged down, held up by the several lines of the Hindenburg System and logistical challenges. A major additional obstacle was the presence of batteries of German artillery on the high ground on the right bank of the Meuse, almost untroubled by any significant assaults by the allied forces. These guns created severe problems for the American commanders and their troops. Includes 150 black and white illustrations and 20 black and white maps.

Includes tours that take the visitor over some beautiful countryside, with stunning views over the Meuse and the Woevre Plain. There are significant vestiges of the war still to be seen, including numerous observation bunkers and shelters as well as trenches. An unusual feature of the area are the traces of part of the Maginot Line, notably bunkers (some of which are very large) and the rail infrastructure to support it, sometimes making use of lines that the Germans built during WWI. 1 vol, 128 pgs 2022 UK, PEN AND SWORD

1-229800 Guardia, Mike ARRACOURT 1944: Triumph of American Armor Tackles the Battle of Arracourt in September 1944, where a German 5th Panzer Army counterattack to blunt the US 4th Armor's drive looked good on paper but failed in the field. Provides an overview of tanks and other vehicles on both sides, general OOB and TO&E, and 'Strategic Setting' to help understand how and why the battle happened. Includes 150 photographs and illustrations.

In their M4 Shermans, American tank crews squared off against the technologically superior Mark V Panther tanks of the Wehrmacht. Yet through a combination of superior tactics, leadership, teamwork, and small-unit initiative, the outnumbered American forces won a decisive victory against the 5th Panzer Army.

Indeed, of the 262 tanks and mobile assault guns fielded by German forces, 200 were damaged or destroyed by enemy fire. The Americans, by contrast, lost only 48 tanks. Following the collapse of the German counterattack at Arracourt, General Patton's Third Army found itself within striking distance of the Third Reich's borderlands. The battle of Arracourt was the US Army's largest tank battle until the Ardennes Offensive in December 1944. 1 vol, 128 pgs 2022 US, CASEAMATE PUBLISHING

1-229820 Rogers, Anthony BRANDENBURGER:Wartime Photographs of Wilhelm Walther - Images Of War series In March 1940, Oberleutnant Wilhelm Walther transferred from Aufklarungs-Abteilung 5, an armored reconnaissance unit, to Bau-Lehr-Bataillon z.b.V. 800 - forerunner of what would soon be known as the 'Brandenburger'. Two months later, he led a commando action in the Netherlands and became the first of his unit to be awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross).

By May 1944, Walther was an Oberstleutnant and an experienced regimental commander in what had evolved as the Division 'Brandenburg'. He would eventually join Obersturmbannfuhrer Otto Skorzeny's SS-Jagdverbande as Chief of Staff, before seeing out the last days of the war with the short-lived Schutzkorps Alpenland. Presents 250 black and white mono illustrations together with the original German captions and English translations, that portray the life and times of this career officer, from the German annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938, to operations in Russia, Greece and the Balkans during 1941-44.

This unique collection of rare images was sourced from the photograph album of Wilhelm Walther and may appeal to militaria collectors, modelers, and re-enactment groups.

1-229791 Stokes, Robert RED BULL - A History of the 34th Infantry Division in World War II: V1 From Mobilization to Victory in Tunisia The story of the US Army National Guard's 34th 'Red Bull' Infantry Division from mobilization through to their bitter but victorious fight at Hill 609 in Tunisia. Includes maps and photographs.

After training, the 34th ID would be deployed in early 1942 to the United Kingdom as the first US division sent overseas, before participating in Operation TORCH and the capture of Algiers. Shocking engagements with Axis forces led to early traumatic defeats in Tunisia, battles that ultimately transformed the division's men into the killer soldiers they needed to become. Their mettle would be tested when they won the bitter fight at Hill 609, where the Red Bull broke the Axis defensive line in Tunisia, resulting in the destruction of two Axis armies and the Allied conquest of the North African shore.

Examines the major battles and little-known events of the Red Bull's brutal introduction to war and its metamorphosis into an effective combat organization, within the context of Allied strategy and leadership.

1-229841 Saunders, Tim NAVAL AVIATION IN THE KOREAN WAR: Reflections of War - Vol1- Cover of Darkness Covers the role of US aircraft carriers and aircraft in stopping the North Korea's initial push to the south and their support during the Inchon Landing and Pusan Perimeter Break out. The last part of the first chapter deals with naval operations during the Marine's Chosin Reservoir march to the sea in December 1950. The book goes on to describe the stabilization of the front lines after the Chinese had entered the war during 1951. Includes 3x16pp color plates with 250 images (75% color and 25% black and white).

At this time, the emphasis for naval air operations is centered on interdiction behind the lines. The focus is on trying to stop road and rail traffic from resupplying the communist troops and allowing them to build up to a major offensive. Also, it includes the entry of the F2H Banshee into carrier operations which gave the USA four major types of aircraft to wage the war. 1 vol, 232 pgs 2022 UK, PEN & SWORD
