1-236360 Polmar, Norman GUIDE TO THE SOVIET NAVY Provides a comprehensive overview of the Soviet Navy in the 1980s. Embarked on an extensive new phase of development, the Soviet Navy is the subject of much concern and controversy in the Western world. The Soviet Navy has the world's largest number of warships and is second only to that of the United States in total displacement. While numerical comparisons can sometimes by instructive, the author warns that they can also be misleading, since the Soviet Navy constructs different types of ships based on different rationales and for different missions using different tactics. 1 vol, 344 pgs 1983 US, NAVAL INSTITUTE PRESS

1-236340 Ross, Al THE DESTROYER: CAMPBELTOWN The destroyer Campbeltown is not only famous for her part in the commando raid on the St. Nazaire dry dock in 1942, but is also representative of an important type. Built as the USS Buchanan (DD131), she was one of over 270 flush-decked destroyers put into service toward the end of World War I. Sent to Great Britain under the Lend-Lease program and renamed Campbeltown, she spent 18 arduous months on convoy duty before being selected for a hazardous mission to deny the Nazi warship Tirpitz the use of repair facilities at the French port of St. Nazaire.

During the desperate but successful operation, the Campbeltown rammed the port's lock gates. Eleven hours later, delayed action fuses set off four-tons of explosives that destroyed both the ship and the docks. Over 200 perspective and 3-view drawings accompany the in-depth description of this distinguished ship along with a large-scale plan on the jacket cover's reverse that is new with this reprint.1 vol, 127 pgs 1990 US, NAVAL INSTITUTE PRESS

The author's drawings show all the changes which she underwent during her long career, while the text focuses especially on her war service which included a number of daring airstrikes, most notably against the German battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz. Later, she sailed for the Far East where she was part of the British Pacific Fleet; there she withstood several kamikaze attacks.1 vol, 160 pgs 1991 US, NAVAL INSTITUTE PRESS

1-LEG2205 von Rossing, Erik ACES OF VALOR: A Solitaire Game of WWI Aerial Combat Solitaire game where you command a fighter squadron on the Western Front during World War I through a campaign of multiple missions to score as many victory points as possible to assist the war effort. You can play as the Germans, or one the Entente powers (British, French, or Americans). Each aircraft counter represents the pilot and the aircraft combined, and your squadron will have up to eight at any given time.

The player chooses the campaign's duration (8, 12, or 16 missions), and draws a card to determine the objective of each mission, which includes patrols, trench strafing, photo recon, artillery spotting, balloon busting, and bomber escort. The player's flight moves across a gridded map that is a semi-historical representation of the Western front. Anti-aircraft fire is heaviest near the trenches but can happen anywhere over enemy territory. When combat occurs, aircraft are moved to an Initiative Track for up to three rounds of combat, where pilot skill, aircraft performance, and luck all come into play to determine the outcome.

The player earns mission points by destroying enemy aircraft and ground targets, and also by escorting bomber and two-seater aircraft on successful bombing, photo reconnaissance, and artillery support missions. When the flight lands, mission points are converted to victory points or used to repair and replace aircraft as well as upgrade aircraft to newer, better models. The goal is to earn enough victory points to achieve a minor, major, or strategic victory.1 vol, 1 pgs 2023 US, LEGION WARGAMES LLC

1-236380 Afiero, Massimiliano SNOW, ICE, AND SACRIFICE: The Italian Army in Russia, 1941-1943 Covers the genesis, organization, and operations of Italian forces that fought alongside the Germans and allies in Russia beginning with Operation Barbarossa in June 1941 until the defeat of the Italian forces there in early 1943.

In accordance with his anti-Bolshevik ideology, Mussolini felt obligated to join with Germany's attack against the Soviet Union. Italy thus formed the CSIR (Corpo di Spedizione in Russia - Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia), consisting of some 62,000 men in three divisions (two infantry and one cavalry, plus a Blackshirt legion) which was sent to participate in the Axis attack against the Soviet Union in June 1941. In July 1942 the CSIR was upgraded to the ARMIR (Armata Italiana in Russia - Italian Army in Russia, also known as the Italian 8th Army), consisting of seven additional divisions (four infantry and three mountain or alpini).

By late 1942 the size of the ARMIR had grown to some 235,000 men. However, both the CSIR and the ARMIR suffered from organizational shortcomings as well as lack of proper equipment and clothing to cope with the operational environment in Russia. Throughout 1941, along with the Germans, the CSIR conducted a number of successful operations. With the advent of the ARMIR, initial actions were also favorable for the Italians, but by December 1942 the Italians, who were deployed along the Don River, were subjected to a massive Soviet operation, Little Uranus, which forced the Italians to withdraw under unimaginably harsh conditions.

The Italians were unprepared for the brutal Russian weather as well as for the overwhelming Soviet superiority in men and equipment that they had to face. Nevertheless, the Italians fought well, especially the troops of the Italian alpine corps, but ultimately they were defeated, the survivors returning to Italy.1 vol, 272 pgs 2023 UK, PEN & SWORD
