1-230210 THE COLORS OF NAPOLEON'S ARMY 1807-1815: Painting Guide Researching uniforms at the Musee de l'Emperi in Salon-de-Provence (France) and with assistance of private collector Jean Brunon, we examined the best existing samples of First Empire uniforms and nearly all of our visual color matches were made using interior surfaces of actual surviving sample uniforms, behind linings, where colors were most likely to remain consistent over the past 200 years. The printer used actual samples of cloth to match the colors presented in this painting guide.

These were checked against cloth samples in other museums and institutions to provide cross-references. The goal of this four-page painting guide was to authenticate the color Imperial Blue used on all French infantry and artillery uniforms.1 vol, 4 pgs 2021 LOMBARDY STUDIOS

1-230130 Roberts, Mike ALEXANDER THE GREAT'S LEGACY: The Decline of Macedonian Europe in the Wake of the Wars of the Successors Explores how both the unique character and the particular legacy left when Alexander died at age of 32 in Babylon in 323BC, ensured that his homeland failed to gain the kind of imperial dividend that accrued to others of the world's great Empires. For Macedon, there was not the thousand years of glory that was the extraordinary destiny of the Romans, nor even the 200 years of Persian primacy, only 50 or so years of strife and trauma ending in a Galatian invasion. This was a period during which Cassander and Lysimachus had seemed about to construct durable Europe-based polities and had seen the likes of Demetrius Poliorcetes and Pyrrhus of Epirus battling and besieging across Macedonia, Thrace, and Greece.

Why was it that 2400 years ago the people who had recently conquered the world were unable to stop barbarian Galatians from looting the tombs of their revered royal line? Why was it that the Macedonian state essentially created by Philip II and taken to the heights of epochal triumph by his son Alexander the Great had, hardly two generations after his death, became a weaker entity than it had been when the young conqueror had crossed the Hellespont? 1 vol, 320 pgs 2022 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-230150 Coleman, Keith AEDAN OF THE GAELS: King of the Scots This bio is devoted to Aedan mac Gabrain, 6th century king of Dal Riata in Scotland. An associate of St. Columba, he was the first recorded king to be ordained in the British Isles and was the most powerful ruler in his generation. Modern writers highlight Aedan as the father of a prince named Arthur, which has led to his place in Arthurian studies. Aedan's prominence in his era qualifies him as a fascinating figure, whose life and legend are explored.

His astonishing military reach covered Orkney, Pictland, Ireland, Northumbria and the Isle of Man. This book details his dominant career, which came to a shattering end after decades of warfare at the Battle of Degsaston in AD 603. Beyond the record of warfare, there is a unique and tantalizing accumulation of legend concerning Aedan, from stories about his birth to tales of him in battle with Irish heroes. English sources mention him and he is one of the few Gaelic kings to feature prominently in Welsh tradition, where he is remembered as a uniquely powerful player in the north of Britain.1 vol, 248 pgs 2022 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-230170 Snape, David THE FIRE OF VENTURE WAS IN HIS VEINS: Major Allan Wilson and the Shangani Patrol 1893 The Shangani or Allan Wilson's Patrol was a minor incident in the British expansion in Africa. Much smaller in scale than the massacre of Isandlwana, the fate of the Patrol was a black mark on the British South Africa's conquest of Matabeleland. The Patrol was part of the Ndebele War of 1893-94 which ended in the overthrow of the kingdom of Lobengula, King of the Ndebele. Includes 30 b/w illustrations and 4 maps.

The book provides an account of the causes of Ndebele War, and the relationship between the BSAC and Lobengula. The Patrol is examined in detail as are the battles of Shangani and Bembesi which preceded it. The theft of Lobengula's gold by two members of the Bechuanaland Border Police became a cause celebre and may have contributed to Jameson's decision to send the Patrol in pursuit of the King.

The war was a joint enterprise of Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company and the British Government but the Company was the senior partner. Leander Starr Jameson with his military adviser John Willoughby, both of whom were to be protagonists in the notorious Jameson Raid, were heavily involved in the overthrow of Lobengula. Jameson's instructions to the leader of the Patrol, Major Patrick Forbes, placed him in an invidious position and virtually split his command. Allan Wilson and his men were sent to his death by Forbes but Wilson's overconfidence in his ability to fight the Ndebele also played a major part in the massacre of his men.

The relationships between the three commanders of the Patrol was fraught with difficult and Forbes' struggle to maintain control was gradually eroded by Commandant Pieter Raaff, the Afrikaner with extensive experience in fighting the Zulus, whose caution might have been caused by his fatal illness.

Accounts from Ndebele survivors of the battle paint a typical Victorian picture of brave men dying for Queen and country but did they actually die for Queen and Company? Did Forbes leave them to their fate? Whatever the cause, Wilson's men's bravery was unquestioned.

The Company's victory contributed to the creation of Rhodesia and Shangani Day soon became a national holiday in the country. Jameson was seen as a hero and decorated by Queen Victoria for his part in the war.1 vol, 178 pgs 2022 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-230200 Whitehome, Joseph THE BATTLE FOR BALTIMORE 1814 The War of 1812 gets little attention in American history; however, this two and a half year conflict had serious consequences, which left regional memories and legends that have endured to the present day. The major actions of the war occurred along the Canadian border but also included the Gulf, Atlantic Coast, and the Chesapeake Bay. Three major events in the Chesapeake Bay (the battles for Hampton, Washington, and Baltimore) have overshadowed other incidents in the bay to the point of obscuring them. A bibliography and an index to full-names, places, and subjects enhance this work.1 vol, 282 pgs 2019 US, HERITAGE BOOKS

1-230180 Robinson, Joseph CHASING THE GREAT RETREAT: The German Cavalry Pursuit of the British Expeditionary Force before the Battle of the Marne August 1914 The focus is on the German pursuit of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) retreat. We show that the Great War should have ended on 23 August 1914 but, due to the 'fog and friction of war' it did not and 'Chasing the BEF' was born. This is a story of missed opportunities made more astonishing by the amount of propaganda extolled by some British authors. This propaganda line claimed that British firepower dealt a great blow to the German army at the Battle of Mons. Much is told about the British soldiers' ability to fire 15 rounds of aimed shooting in a minute, which allegedly the Germans mistook for machine-gun fire. Clearly in their eyes, the British won that battle. Britain, in fact, lost the Battle of Mons and should have lost the war on 23 August. Germany missed a wide-open door that would have spelled disaster for the BEF and the entire Left Flank of the French army. Includes 27 b/w photos and 15 maps.

We focus on the role of the German cavalry. This arm is seriously understudied and has had little place in some official histories. In general, both British and German works ignore the role the cavalry played in the war. We are talking about the Right Wing of the German army only, consisting of the German First Army, Second Army, and two cavalry formations known as Hoherer Kavallerie-Kommandeur (HKK 1 and HKK 2). The HKK were ad hoc organizations that had never been tested before the war. They are often wrongly referred to as a cavalry corps - the cavalry did not become a corps until 1915 - but neither were they similar to an infantry corps. However, many authors do not understand the concept of the HKK and therefore do not address the cavalry in operational maneuvers.

Written as a sequel to the award-winning German Failure in Belgium, August 1914: How Faulty Reconnaissance Exposed the Weakness of the Schlieffen Plan (2019), which won the Tomlinson Book Award for best First World War English language book in 2020, this volume stands alone as the German army chases the well-documented 'Great Retreat'. 1 vol, 178 pgs 2022 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-219055 Claringbould, Michael SOUTH PACIFIC AIR WAR: Volume 5 - Crisis in Papua September - December 1942 Volume Five of this series chronicles aerial warfare primarily in the New Guinea theater in the critical period between September and December 1942. It can be read alone or as a continuation of the previous four volumes which span the first nine months of the Pacific War. Of import, Allied and Japanese accounts get matched together for a balanced account of the conflict.

By early September the strategic picture in the theater had changed markedly within just six weeks. From their new Buna beachhead, the Japanese Army commenced a Papuan mountain campaign which threatened the Allied bastion of Port Moresby. Meanwhile the battle for Guadalcanal was raging, with the outcome of the wider Pacific War in the balance.

Against this background a strengthened US Fifth Air Force took the fight to the IJA with direct air support. While this was being conducted by P-39s, P-40Es, A-20As and B-25s, raids by B-17s against Rabaul aided US forces in the neighboring Solomons. RAAF Beaufighters, Beauforts, Bostons, and Hudsons also contributed substantially to these efforts.

At Rabaul, a wide variety of fresh IJN fighter and bomber units poured in the theater, although these became focused mainly on the Solomons. Such were the massive losses experienced, by November the IJN undertook a complete operational and administrative reorganization of its air power. Then, despite a strong reluctance to become involved, the IJA sent an advance reconnaissance detachment to Rabaul, the forerunner of major reinforcements that would arrive in December.1 vol, 200 pgs 2022 AUSTRALIA, AVONMORE BOOKS

1-230120 Domagalski, John ESCAPE FROM JAVA: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the USS Marblehead The old light cruiser Marblehead was living out her final years of naval service as a member of the United States Asiatic Fleet in 1941. This small group of mostly antiquated ships based in the Philippines sailed the waters of East Asia to show the American flag in places like China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore. The sudden eruption of World War II in the Pacific put the warship on the front lines of the conflict as Imperial Japan unleashed a series of devastating attacks across the region.

On the morning of February 4, 1942, the warship was surprised by Japanese planes northeast of Java. Two large bombs slammed into Marblehead causing fires, casualties, and knocking out her steering gear. A third bomb exploded close by underwater. The near miss ripped a large gash into her hull allowing a torrent of water to rush inside the ship.

Explains how gunners toiled to keep their guns firing, with medical staff tending to the wounded, and alongside damage control sailors working in flooded compartments. The damage was critical, so much so the Japanese radioed they had sunk the ship. In fact, through courage, sacrifice, and super-human effort, Marblehead would successfully make a harrowing 13,000 mile journey back to the US.1 vol, 320 pgs 2022 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-956084 various WORLD AT WAR # 84: Manstein's War Manstein's War: Decision in the West 1940 is a two-player wargame of the German offensive in Western Europe in May-June 1940 in which the Wehrmacht seized a stunning victory over Allied forces in the Low Countries and France. The game uses a variant of the Boots system to model command, control, and logistics on an operational scale. Both players can fight a campaign of mobility and decisive battles. Units are mostly armies and corps.

The general structure of the game is that each player uses command markers to activate their forces, which are divided into sub-commands (army groups and similar echelons). Each player has special markers which provide additional operational capabilities. Can you turn the tide of history in that decisive spring of 1940?
