du Plessis, Jean Charl THE SELEUCID ARMY OF ANTIOCHUS THE GREAT: Weapons, Armour and Tactics
In depth study of Antiochus III's army examines the troop types, weapons and armor of Antiochus' army by combining the most recent historical research and latest archaeological evidence with a strong element of reconstructive archaeology (making and using of replica equipment). Also analyzes army performance in battles, sieges, and campaigns.
Sections cover the regular, Hellenistic-style core of the army, the auxiliaries from across the Empire and mercenaries, as well as the terror weapons of elephants and scythed chariots. Weapons and armor considered in great detail, including, for example, useful data on the performance of slings and the wounds they could inflict, drawing on modern testing and the author's own experience.1 vol, 280 pgs

Hill, Paul THE KINGDOM OF THE ANGLO-SAXONS: The Wars of King Alfred 865-899
Military and political history of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom explores England's birth amidst the devastation and fury of the Danish invasions of the ninth century. Alfred the Great, youngest son of King Aethelwulf, took control of the last surviving Anglo-Saxon kingdom, bringing Wessex and the 'English' parts of Mercia together into a new 'Kingdom of the Anglo-Saxons'. This is a story of betrayal and of vengeance, of turncoat oath-breakers and loyal commanders, of battles fought and won against the odds. Includes 30 color & 90 black and white illustrations.
Warfare in Alfred's England changed from attritional set-piece battles to a grander strategic concern. This is explored, demonstrating how defense-in-depth fortification networks were built across the resurgent kingdom in the wake of Alfred's victory at Edington in 878. The arrival of new Danish armies into England in the 890s would lead to campaigns quite unlike those of the Great Heathen Army of the previous generation.
This is a human, as well as a military story: how a king demonstrated his right to rule was important. Alfred sought to secure the succession on his son Edward, who led his own forces as a young man in the 890s. But not everybody was happy in Alfred's England. Despite the ever-present threat from the Danes, the greatest challenge facing Alfred arose from his own kin, centered deep in the heart of ancient Wessex. Alfred knew very well that his was not the only branch of the family who claimed a right to rule.1 vol, 280 pgs

Flaherty, Chris TURKISH ARMY: Crimean War Uniforms - Volume 1
The key source of information is the research of Charles A. Norman, British military artist and researcher. Norman's work transliterated original observations, illustrations, and notes made by two Crimean War Commentators: Joseph-Emile Vanson, and Constantin Guys. Constantin Guys was a reporter, and illustrator for The Illustrated London News, and in 1854 was assigned to the Crimea to produce drawings of wartime scenes which could be turned into engravings for news. Constantin Guys documented various Turkish uniforms, with his description of each scene, written in English on the back of the drawing or below it.
The approach has been to overlay Norman's original interpretations, combining this with other period written descriptions, illustrations, paintings, and photographs taken at the time, hopefully getting a closer interpretation of the Turkish Army uniforms seen in the Crimea. Many of the library and museum collections provide a significant amount of information. However, much of this is not accurately dated. The dating of these often slip by two or three years, and up to a decade earlier or later. The illustrations presented in both volumes are based on this combination of materials.
Volume 2 covers the Turkish Navy, the Contingents, Additional Cavalry Units, and the Romanian Army.1 vol, 74 pgs

Conner, Robert JAMES MONTGOMERY: Abolitionist Warrior
Biography of James Montgomery, a leader of the free-state movement in pre-Civil War Kansas and Missouri and associated with its direct-action military wing. His actions before the Civil War, and then during the war in the Union Army, contributed towards the abolition of slavery. This biography uncovers and deals honestly with his serious flaws, debunks some wilder charges, and uncovers his considerable attributes and achievements.
A close associate and ally of other abolitionists including John Brown, Harriet Tubman, Colonels Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Robert G. Shaw, Montgomery led his African-American regiment along with Tubman and other civilians in the 1863 Combahee River raid, which freed almost 800 slaves from South Carolina plantations. He then commanded a brigade in the siege of Fort Wagner, near Charleston.
In 1864, still in brigade command, he fought at the Battle of Olustee in Florida, helping prevent the collapse and disintegration of Union General Truman Seymour's army. Later that year he returned home and played a significant role in defeating Confederate General Sterling Price's great raid, especially at the Battle of Westport.1 vol, 240 pgs

Cucut, Carlo THE FINNISH ARMORED UNITS: 1919 - 1945
After gaining independence in 1917, Finland fell into a three-month civil war, at the end of which the front formed by republicans, conservatives, and monarchists defeated socialist and communist opponents. The Finnish Armored Corps traces its origin back to 1919, when a Tank Regiment was formed on July 15 with FT-17 tanks. Between WWI and WWII, the Finnish army made an effort to modernize its armored forces, acquiring assets from abroad and reorganizing its structure several times. The Finnish armored units took part in three major conflicts: the Winter War (1939-40), the Continuation War (1941-1944) and the Lapland War (1944-45).1 vol, 100 pgs
