1-227220 Binda, Alexandre THE EQUUS Men: Rhodesia's Mounted Infantry: The Grey's Scouts 1896-1980 This all new work by accomplished military historian Alexandre Binda, former paymaster to the Grey's Scouts, tells the remarkable story of Rhodesia's mounted infantry, the Grey's Scouts. Working closely with the last commanding officer, squadron commanders, and a whole host of regimental personalities, all of whom have given unequivocal support, Binda enjoyed unparalleled access to thousands of pages of archival documents and many hundreds of previously unpublished photographs. Here, he has traced the Grey's from their early origins in the Matabele Rebellion of 1896, where an 'unassuming Englishman, the Honorable George Grey', found himself originating a body of horseman named the 'Bulawayo Field Force', through to the formation of the Animal Transport Unit (ATU) which went on to become the Mounted Infantry Unit (MIU).

Trained and utilized as mounted infantry as opposed to cavalry, the Grey's Scouts were deployed to great effect during the bitter Rhodesian Bush War of the late 1960s - 1970s. Lightly equipped, they were able to cover great distances at speed, live off the veldt with minimal support, and through 'shock action', quickly engage and destroy insurgent forces. Originally a regular formation, the Grey's Scouts were augmented by Territorial and National Service soldiers as the conflict progressed and by 1980, when hostilities ceased, the Regiment numbered some 600 soldiers, both men and women, black and white. 1 vol, 290 pgs 2021 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-222472 Massimo, Predonzani and Vincenzo Alberici THE ITALIAN WARS: VOLUME 2 -- TAgnadello 1509, Ravenna 1512, Marignano 1515 The League of Cambrai was an alliance created in December 1508 among the main European powers with the purpose of halting the expansion of the Republic of Venice. The war that followed was one of the major conflicts in the Italian wars, lasted from 1508 to 1516, and saw several stages.

The major States involved were the Kingdom of France, the Pontifical State, and the Republic of Venice. They were augmented by the European powers of Spain, England, Scotland, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Kingdom of Hungary, and several minor States, such as the Dukedom of Milan, the Republic of Florence, the Dukedom of Ferrara, the city of Mantua, and the Swiss cantons. Includes 41 b/w illustrations, eight pages of color artwork, and seven b/w maps.

The authors describe the three phases that followed one another during the conflict, and the alternating alliances among the States involved - the League against Venice in the Battle of Agnadello; the following League against France, declared by Pope Julius II, in the Battle of Ravenna; and the alliance between Venice and France in the Battle of Marignano, also known as the Battle of the Giants.

Covers army structures, weapons, and battles using variety of chronicles, reports, and studies. Also includes military heraldry, armies' identification marks, and captains' emblems displayed on garments, harnesses, and insignias.

1-227240 Colson, Dr Bruno BELGIANS IN THE HAPSBURG ARMY: Regiments and Military Personnel of the Austrian Netherlands, 1756-1815 The Belgians in the Austrian Habsburg Army of the 18th century seem to have been completely forgotten. They enjoyed a very great reputation, however, and their numbers included seventeen field-marshals and about fifty generals. Belgian units were identified as such: they were called 'Walloon', recruited in the 'Low Countries'. There were five infantry regiments, the free corps, a regiment of cavalry, artillery and engineers, a real embryo of a complete national army. These units distinguished themselves during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) against Frederick II's Prussians. The Austrian victories of Kolin, Hochkirch, Domstadtl and Adelsbach, among others, were due in large part to them. Against revolutionary France, the 'national regiments' - as they were called in the Austrian Netherlands - were notably engaged at Neerwinden, Valenciennes, Fleurus, Wurzburg, Stockach, Trebbia and Marengo. Beyond the glorifying historiography of the 19th century, the archives and the testimonies of their opponents confirm their value and professionalism. Includes 1200 colour photographs and illustrations.

The Belgian contribution was also intellectual, which was never sufficiently recognised. Prince Charles-Joseph de Ligne, as we know, was arguably the most important Austrian military thinker of the 18th century, but many other Flemish, Walloon and Brussels officers were employed by the Habsburg army for their talents as tacticians, engineers, draftsmen or cartographers. There was a Belgian specificity related to the advanced education and material prosperity of the Netherlands within the multiple possessions of the Habsburgs.

This book tells the story of all these unjustly forgotten men in a completely new way, drawing not only on first-hand sources but also on an iconography never collected before. This is all the more valuable because the Austrian monarchy did not subsidise many 'battle paintings', as was done in France. Nor, unlike Prussia, did it see to it that uniforms of its armies were preserved.

The Royal Museum of the Army and Military History in Brussels, however, holds a large amount of material, printed and manuscript evidence from that period: it is all on display in this book. The castles of Belgium, in particular the Chateau Beloeil, have authorized the reproduction of their family treasures: portraits, colour battle plans, weapons, pieces of equipment and uniforms. The University of Namur holds in its library two collections of ancient works relating to Charles-Joseph de Ligne, field marshal and writer. The Museum of Military History in Vienna joined the adventure with other Austrian, Belgian, Luxembourg, and German institutions to make this book a veritable catalogue of collectibles and the most complete pictorial sum on the powerful Habsburg army in the second half of the 18th and early 19th centuries. 1 vol, 416 pgs 2021 AUSTRIA, VERLAG MILITARIA

1-LEG2101 Gale, Tim Decisive Victory 1918: Volume 1 - Soissons Game scale
Unit size: Regiment/Division
Game Turn: 6 Hour Day/ 12 Hour Night
Map Scale: 1 Kilometer per hex
The Battle of Soissons, 18 July to 28 July, 1918, was the first time that the French army used a large-scale attack with tanks supported by a surprise (i.e. not pre-registered) artillery bombardment, similar to the British attack the previous year at Cambrai, and it was the first time that full-size US divisions went on the offensive incorporated in the French army. But most importantly, it was the opening of the Second Battle of the Marne. It not known at the time, although suspected by many, that this battle was the death-knell of the German army.

The game features mandatory attacks into multiple hexes, very rigid ZOC, and severe restrictions on disengagement and advance after combat. 'Threat zones' extend beyond the standard 1-hex ZOCs and represent limited knowledge of the enemy's positions, thus preventing unrealistic infiltration through narrow gaps in the frontline.

The Combat system is highly attritional, in terms of casualties and cohesion disruption. Reorganization is a slow process, conducted under the cover of the night. Attacking units rapidly deplete their offensive power. Defending units, on the other hand, are never completely eliminated, and retain (as 'remnants') indefinite residual defensive power. Defensive initiative superiority also translates into special 'fall back' movement, which allows defenders to extricate themselves from dangerously outflanked positions and avoid encirclement.

1-PWAR097 Chick, Sean PAPER WARS: Issue 97-- Battle for Galicia, 1914 Battle for Galicia, 1914 models the opening campaign of WWI fought between Imperial Russia and Austria-Hungary on the plains of Galicia and southern Poland. Simulated are the concurrent offensives launched by the two belligerents; the Austro-Hungarian thrust northward direction to Lublin and the Russian concentric attack aimed at Lemberg.

The game combines simple mechanics (although not simplistic) with a historically accurate map and order of battle. The synthesis of the maneuver, effectiveness of recovery, and combat resolution sub-systems highlight the important aspects of the campaign.

1-930329 various STRATEGY & TACTICS # 329 The Shanghai-Nanking Campaign 1937 The Shanghai-Nanking Campaign 1937 (SNC) is a two-player historical simulation of the largest single military campaign fought anywhere in the world during the interwar period. The Japanese player is primarily on the offensive, attempting nothing less than ending China's existence as an independent country via the political shock of the rapid conquest of that country's primary port and capital cities.

The units of maneuver are Japanese regiments or Chinese divisions. Japanese regiments were uniform and varied on their combat experience. Chinese divisions varied in manpower and training and so their combat strength and second step are reflective of those factors. Each hexagon on the map represents seven miles (11 km) from side to opposite side. Each full game turn represents approximately two weeks.

1-227210 Candil, Anthony TANK COMBAT IN SPAIN: Armored Warfare During the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 Within months of the 1936 start of the Spanish Civil War, three out of the four major European powers (Italy, Germany, and the Soviet Union) decided to intervene. Spain turned out to be the perfect proving ground to carry out controlled, realistic experiments with live weapons and troops. This book covers the theories of the three main contributors that provided armor to the warring parties in the civil war, how those contributions shaped combat, and how the lessons learned were then applied to tank combat in World War II.

The use of tanks in the Spanish Civil War wedded traditional war to modern technology. The fighting in Spain did not offer any easy answers, however, to the question of infantry-armor cooperation, primarily because the tanks supplied were not very worthy and had been supplied in small numbers, even though the Republicans organized an 'armored division.' The situation for the tanks on the Nationalist side was so bad in practical terms that they reused captured Russian armor in their units. Tank employment in Spain did offer many lessons, but the lessons did not always lie in what was done or accomplished but precisely on what was not done and was not accomplished. 1 vol, 264 pgs 2021 US, CASEMATE

1-227231 Bruhn, Cdr. David TURN INTO THE WIND V1: US Navy and Royal Navy Light Fleet Aircraft Carriers in World War II, and Contributions of the British Pacific Fleet In 1942, to compensate for a lack of aircraft carriers, FDR directed the US Navy to convert cruiser hulls, already laid down, into light aircraft carriers -- creating nine Independence-class carriers that would earn more battle stars, on average, than their bigger, better-known sisters (the 12 Essex carriers). Covers a variety of actions and pilots.

Britain similarly began construction on 10 698-foot Colossus-class light fleet carriers. Four entered service before the end of the war, and were allocated to the British Pacific Fleet, but arrived too late for frontline action. Aboard the BPF's larger carriers, which fought in the Battle of Okinawa and other actions, were members of many Commonwealth countries. Among them was Robert Hampton Gray, who (posthumously) was Canada's last Victoria Cross winner of the war.

David TURN INTO THE WIND V2: US Navy, Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy, and Royal Canadian Navy Light Fleet Aircraft Carriers in the Korean War and through end of service, 1950-1982 Volume 2 follows the light carriers and their crews from the Korean War into the modern era. Following the Korean War, Australia acquired two additional former Royal Navy light fleet carriers and Canada three as centerpieces for their naval fixed air programs. Former CVLs served in new roles during the Cold War/Vietnam War: USS Wright as a 'doomsday' afloat White House, HMAS Sydney as a troop transport, and USS Arlington as a communications link between the Pentagon and commanders in the field.

1-227230 Szamveber, Norbet THE SWORD BEHAND THE SHIELD: Combat History of the German Efforts to Relieve Budapest 1945 - Operation 'Konrad' I, III, III The Soviet 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts had encircled Budapest, Hungary, by Christmas 1944, after very heavy combat. However, this was just the first phase of a period of intense combat, as the Germans planned the relief of the capital with a reinforced IV. SS-Panzerkorps.

The first day of Operation 'Konrad' was 1 January 1945, and marked the beginning of a series of fierce clashes that lasted for nearly six weeks. Both sides employed significant numbers of armored forces, including heavy tanks, in these battles. The German-Hungarian forces tried to break through to Budapest three times in three different locations, but each time they struck relocated Soviet tank, mechanized, rifle, cavalry, artillery, and anti-tank units from 3rd Ukrainian Front's reserve. In January 1945, furious tank battles developed in the eastern part of Transdanubia in Hungary.

After Konrad III failed, the Soviet troops launched a counter-offensive in late January 1945 to encircle and eliminate the advancing enemy forces. The German armored Kampfgruppen managed to blunt the Soviet attack, which eventually wound down and fragmented, mirroring the German offensives before it.

Uses German, Soviet, and Hungarian archival records (e.g. war diaries, daily and after-action reports, etc.), including a number of rare unit histories, period private diaries, and reliable personal memoirs to provide a day-by-day account that follows the action and analyzes the command and control systems at operational and tactical levels and the losses of both sides. Also includes many detailed, specially-commissioned color battle maps.

1-956078 various WORLD AT WAR # 78: Drive on Suez Drive on Suez is a solitaire game where the player takes command of the German-Italian Panzer Armee Afrika (PAA) during the 1942 campaign in Egypt as Rommel drives on the Suez Canal. The game system plays the Allied Middle East Command (MEC). The game begins immediately following the PAA capture of Tobruk in June 1942 and continues through to the time of the August battle of Alam el Halfa.

Your goal is to seize strategic objectives such as major cities in the Nile Delta and the Suez Canal. You will have to deal with a wide variety of situations, from battling against fierce counterattacks to figuring out ways to extend your lines of supply. While Suez is a solitaire game, multiple players can play as the PAA team, making decisions by consensus, or each managing operations along one of the Routes of Advance. Each turn can represent any amount of time from two days of intense combat to two weeks of refitting and reorganizing. The map scale is approximately 45 km to the inch. Ground combat units represent everything from battalions to divisions. Air units represent two to six groups.

1-963054 The Nagorno-Karabakh War: 1992-1994 The Nagorno-Karabakh War: 1992-1994 is a two-player wargame of the war between Azerbaijan and the breakaway province (Oblast) of Nagorno-Karabakh, inhabited by an Armenian majority. After the first ethnic clashes between Armenians and Azeri, during the death throes of the Soviet Union, Nagorno-Karabakh declared independence from Azerbaijan. The Azeri launched an ethnic cleansing campaign. Faced with annihilation, the Armenians resisted and fought back. The Armenian player must fight a numerically superior foe but he has the advantage of interior lines and a unified command. The AZ player has a greater supply of former Red Army weapons and ammunition but must fight not only the Armenians but also political infighting and low morale. Each hexagon encompasses about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Units of maneuver are battalions. There are nine game turns each representing three months.
