Sadler, John HOTSPUR: Sir Henry Percy and the Myth of Chivalry
On 21 July 1403 Sir Henry Percy - better known as Hotspur - led a rebel army out at Shrewsbury to face the forces of the king Henry IV. The battle was both bloody and decisive. Hotspur was shot down by an arrow and killed. Posthumously he was declared a traitor and his lands forfeited to the crown. This was an ignominious end to the brilliant career of one of the most famous medieval noblemen, a remarkable soldier, diplomat, and courtier who played a leading role in the reigns of Richard II and Henry IV. How did he earn his extraordinary reputation, and why did Shakespeare portray him as a fearsomely brave but flawed hero who, despite a traitor's death, remained the mirror of chivalry?
Hotspur's exploits as a soldier in France during the Hundred Years War, against the Scots in the Scottish borders and at the battles of Otterburn, Homildon Hill, and Shrewsbury have overshadowed his diplomatic role as a loyal royal servant in missions to Prussia, Cyprus, Ireland, and Aquitaine. And, as the heir to one of the foremost noble families of northern England, he was an important player not only in the affairs of the North but of the kingdom as a whole.1 vol, 256 pgs

Ede-Borrett, Stephen THE ARMY OF THE KINGDOM OF ITALY, 1805-1814: Uniforms, Organization, Campaigns
As well as being Emperor of France, Napoleon was also King of Italy - a state that essentially comprised all Italy north of the Kingdom of Naples. The Army of the Kingdom of Italy fought alongside that of France in all of the major campaigns of the Grande Armee as well as contributing troops to the French army in Spain. It was amongst France's most reliable allies but it is often confused with what the French termed the Armee d'Italie -- a different, if related, entity. The author explains how and why these two are different. This examines the uniforms, organization, personnel and campaigns of that army. Includes 40 b/w illustrations, 12 b/w photos, 16 color illustrations, 16 pages of color plates, and one map.
The book covers not just the regulation uniforms, although unusually the regulations were somewhat sparse, but also the numerous variations recorded in contemporary documents and plates. The uniforms of the Tete de Colonne were never regulated properly and changed from issue to issue and year to year.1 vol, 246 pgs

Torettam F.Gregory LIEUTENANT GENERAL JAMES LONGSTREET - INNOVATIVE MILITARY STRATEGIST: The Most Misunderstood Civil War General
Examines the unique strategies and technological achievements made by Lieutenant-General James Longstreet, commander of the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, during the American Civil War. Offers a new viewpoint of the war and the generals who tailored their designs to pursue the war, analyses Longstreet's views of the generals and the tactics and strategy they employed, and examines why Longstreet proposed and urged a new type of warfare against a backdrop of technological developments and the disparity between the North and South. Longstreet advocated for defensive warfare, using entrenchments, and trying to maneuver the enemy to assault his position, thus conserving manpower, resources and supplies. Includes 40 photographs and five maps.1 vol, 264 pgs

Jowett, Phillip NARVIK AND THE NORWEGIAN CAMPAIGN 1940: Images of War Series
Another in the fine series uses 150 photos from archives to examine the 1940 German invasion and capture of Norway by land, sea, and air. Describes how important it was for the Allies - the Norwegians, British, and French - to defend northern Norway against the Germans, and in particular to retain control of the strategic port of Narvik. The photographs are especially valuable in that they show the harsh conditions in which the fighting took place and offer us a direct impression of the experience of the men who fought there.1 vol, 240 pgs
