1-83190 Lacy, Bennett P. FINAL COMBAT: WWII Skirmish Rules for Role Playing and Miniatures Fifth edition uses character attributes to drive this set of skirmish wargaming rules for role-playing and miniatures that simulates squad-level engagements of WWII. This streamlined set eliminates the Reason-to-Look mechanic and consolidates tables grouped by positive and negative modifiers, which facilitates faster compilation.

It employs a chit-driven activation system that abstractly represents unit cohesion under combat conditions. Ground scale that is equal to the miniature in the context of one second of worthwhile action. It also incorporates a scalable level of detail that allows players to eliminate the damage model and use generic character attributes.

Although this book contains rules for armored combat, data sheets for individual tanks are not included. Anthology of Armor is a companion volume to this book and provides the necessary data for almost 200 AFVs.1 vol, 154 pgs 2023 US, ON MILITARY MATTERS

1-237750 Grainger, John SEXTUS JULIUS FRONTIUS AND THE ROMAN EMPIRE: Author of Stratagems, Advisor to Emperors, Governor of Britain, Pacifier of Wales Sextus Iulius Frontinus is best known as author of the military handbook Strategems but, in addition to writing this and other works (now lost), he also had a varied and surprisingly influential career in military and civil posts around the Roman Empire. Reconstructing his life to the fullest extent permitted by the sources, this favorably biography re-evaluates his importance, particularly in Britain (at the expense of the better-known Agricola).

Frontinus loyally served at least six emperors, often acting as a trusted counselor, and even deputized for Trajan while he was busy in Germany and elsewhere. He was possibly the longest-serving governor of Britain (five years), where he completed the subjugation of Wales and established the frontier in northern England at the Ribble-Tees line. He founded several legionary fortresses, including those that later became the towns of York, Chester, and Caerleon. He also served on the Rhine, in Spain and Asia and in the civil sphere reformed the water supply of Rome.1 vol, 264 pgs 2023 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-201210 Matyszak, Philip EXPEDITION TO DISASTER: 415BC The Athenian expedition to conquer Sicily was one of the pivotal events of the classical period. At this time (415 BC), Athens was locked in a decades-long struggle with Sparta for mastery of the Greek world. The expedition to Sicily was intended to give Athens the extra money and resources to crush the Spartans. New archaeological discoveries allow the ensuing siege to be reconstructed in greater detail than ever before. 1 vol, 192 pgs 2023 UK, PEN AND SWORD

1-237730 Romane, Julian JULIUS CAESAR'S CIVIL WAR: Tactics, Strategies and Logistics Julian Romane examines the campaigns of Julius Caesar throughout the civil wars that followed his famous crossing of the Rubicon, through to the defeat of the final Pompeian diehards at the battle of Munda. He analyzes Caesar's generalship in the widest sense, with a strong emphasis on the logistical and financial effort required to put his legions in the field and keep them equipped, fed and paid. The attention given to this important but often-neglected aspect sets this account apart from many others.

The author discusses the nature of late Republican Roman armies, describing their organization, tactics and equipment. The fact that such armies were employed both by and against Caesar only emphasizes the role of generalship in the outcome. This is followed by a detailed account of the strategic maneuvers in Caesar's epochal duel with Pompey the Great and the resultant battles at Dyrrhachium and Pharsalus. The final campaigns to mop up opposition in Spain and Africa are studied in equal detail to give a complete picture of Caesar's command performance in these history-shaping events.1 vol, 328 pgs 2023 UK, PEN & SWORD

2-192670 Cooper, Bryan IRONCLADS OF CAMBRAI: WWI British tanks brought about a breakthrough of the massive German defense system of the Hindenburg Line, followed up by British infantry and cavalry divisions. They were supported for the first time by low flying fighter aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps. The initial victory at Cambrai brought cheering crowds into the streets of London and the ringing of church bells in celebration. Includes 16 pages of b/w plates.

It seemed possible that the success might bring about the final defeat of Germany. But the British High Command failed to exploit the success. Generals who still dreamt of massive cavalry charges had not had much faith in this strange new weapon that had been brought to them - funded initially by the Royal Navy at the behest of Winston Churchill who was then First Lord of the Admiralty and did see its value. The High Command did not really believe the breakthrough was possible and tragically miscalculated the necessary steps to follow it up. Within days the Germans counterattacked and regained much of the ground that the British had won. What could have been the final victory was delayed for another year.1 vol, 248 pgs 2023 UK, PEN & SWORD BOOKS
