1-238660 Sullivan, Tony THE HISTORY OF ROMAN LEGION VI VICTRIX: The Original Watches on the Wall Brought over from Germany in 122 to assist in the building of Hadrian's Wall the Sixth Legion remained in Britain until the end of Roman rule. The book will investigate the changing military organization, weapons, and warfare as well as the many auxiliary units posted in the north of Britain.

Profiles members of the Sixth Legion known from inscriptions and literary sources. From lowly legionaries helping to build Hadrian's or the Antonine Wall to Pertinax, tribune of the Sixth, and destined to become Emperor. Case studies will include a praefectus castrorum, Lucius Artorius Castus, along with the legionary bases at York and Corbridge.

The men of the Sixth witnessed the tumultuous, and often bloody, history of Roman Britain: the border shifting back and forth under Antoninus; barbarian incursions and army mutinies under the murderous Commodus; the bloody civil war against Septimius Severus and the subsequent invasion of Caledonia. In the last century of Roman rule, the Sixth supported several rival emperors from Constantine the Great, Magnus Maximus until finally Constantine III. The journey will end with a discussion of the likely fate of the Sixth in the early fifth century after the end of Roman authority. 1 vol, 224 pgs 2023 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-238680 Fredholm von Essen, Michael THE KALMAR WAR 1611-1613: Gustavus Adolphus's First War Describes and analyzes the Kalmar War of 1611-1613 between Sweden and Denmark-Norway. Details the military systems of Sweden and Denmark-Norway in the early 17th century and explains the development of the Swedish Army and the military thought of Gustavus Adolphus before he used his reformed army with great success in the Thirty Years' War.? Since Denmark controlled the Straits between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, Sweden sought an alternative trade route through the sparsely populated Arctic Lapland - an option enabled by the 1595 Treaty of Teusina (Tyavzino) with Muscovy.

In 1607, King Charles IX of Sweden declared himself King of the Lapps and sent men to collect taxes in what by tradition was regarded as Norwegian territory. In response, King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway in 1611 declared war upon Sweden and invaded Swedish territory from the south. Operations also took place along the Swedish-Norwegian border and elsewhere in the Baltic region, on land and on sea.

In addition, Sweden employed Scottish privateers and enlisted a Scottish corps which landed in Norway. Nonetheless, Denmark ultimately won the war. However, the Danish thrust against the Swedish heartland failed, and the Kalmar War was the last time when Denmark successfully defended its control of the Baltic Sea against Sweden. The principal commander on the Swedish side was the young Gustavus Adolphus, who later rose to prominence in the Thirty Years' War.

The losses in the Kalmar War proved to Gustavus Adolphus that the Swedish army was becoming obsolete and needed thorough modernization. As a result, the defeat in the Kalmar War was the catalyst that prompted Gustavus Adolphus to reform the Swedish army, which in turn set Sweden on the path to become a regional great power in the subsequent Thirty Years' War. 1 vol, 332 pgs 2023 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-238690 Lenihan, Padraig RAW GENERALS AND GREEN SOLDIERS: Catholic Armies in Ireland 1641-1643 Study of the Catholic armies in October 1641 with a rising in Ulster. Insurgent slaughter of Protestant settlers in the winter of 1641-42 quickly gained canonical status. English and Scots armies routinely massacred natives in the spring and summer that followed. Reveals underlying pattern and purpose in what would otherwise be one apparently random battle, siege, skirmish, massacre, and cattle raid after another, devoid of form or meaning. Includes a focus on strategic, operational, and tactical operations.

One reason why the Catholics lost so many battles may be that their generals fought battles when they needn't have, showed a fatal preference for the all-out attack, and did not always deploy in a manner that let their army's components (pike, shot, and horse) act in mutual support. Another reason may be that the rankers were less invested in the Catholic cause than their officers. The first part of the Wars of Religion in Ireland (1641-53) shuddered to a halt in September 1643 when the insurgents, now embodied as the Confederate Catholics, agreed to a ceasefire with Charles I's representative in Ireland.1 vol, 168 pgs 2023 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-238770 Cogswell, Neil OLMUTZ TO TORGAU: Horace St Paul and the Campaigns of the Austrian Army in the Seven Years War 1758-60 Following the disastrous conclusion to the campaign of 1757, the Austrian Army regrouped in Bohemia. Meanwhile, Prussia attempted the reconquest of Silesia before seizing the initiative and thrusting directly towards Vienna. Olmutz proved to be a high-tide mark of the offensive. Over the next three years, Austria and her allies inflicted a series of heavy defeats on the Prussians at Hochkirch, Kunersdorf, Dresden, Maxen, Landeshut and Glatz. By the end of 1760 - with Berlin open to insult by Swedish, Austrian, and especially Russian raiders - the King of Prussia was left with no other option than the desperate measure of attacking the Austrian Army outside Torgau. Includes 242 plates of maps and statistical information, detailed gazetteer, and lists of persons and regiments named.1 vol, 712 pgs 2023 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

2-217150 Harrison, Richard THE BATTLE OF THE DNEPR: The Red Army's Forcing of the East Wall, September-December 1943 Details the general offensive that followed the fighting in the area of the Kursk salient in July-August 1943. The Germans, who were now on the strategic defensive in the East, sought to fall back and consolidate their front along the line of the Dnepr River. The Red Army's success in overturning these expectations along this particularly important sector is the subject of this study.

This is a composite work based upon three studies carried out by the Red Army General Staff's military-historical directorate, which was charged with collecting and analyzing the war's experience. The first is a lengthy internal document, dating from 1946, which was eventually published in Russia in 2007, although heavily supplemented by commentary and other information not contained in the original. The present work omits these additions, while supplying its own commentary in places deemed necessary. Two short articles from another publication round out the collection.

The book is divided into two parts. The first deals with the efforts by General N.F. Vatutin's Voronezh (later renamed First Ukrainian) Front to exploit the Soviet victory during the battle of Kursk and to carry the war to the Dnepr River and beyond. This involved pursuing the retreating Germans and attempting to seize crossings over the Dnepr in the Kiev area before the Germans could get across and consolidate their position.

The second part comprises two articles covering the combat operations of General I.S. Konev's Steppe (later renamed Second Ukrainian) Front through Poltava and Kremenchug and its crossing of the Dnepr to seize bridgeheads south of Kiev. This is a more narrowly-focused tactical and operational study, dealing with the efforts of the front's 37th and 52nd armies to expand their positions on the Ukrainian right bank into operational bridgeheads capable of supporting a larger offensive to the west in 1944.1 vol, 170 pgs 2017 UK, HELION AND COMPANY

1-238710 Margry, Karel THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD: Then and Now Combines together three After the Battle stories devoted to that historic struggle. Brings AtB's 'then and now' format to Stalingrad to match up numerous combat photos taken all over the city, giving full treatment to the months-long struggle for the city on the Volga. The same goes for Voronezh where we found another local expert, Sergey Popov, who achieved equally impressive comparisons.

It opens with a detailed account of the fight for the city of Voronezh before the main part of the book: comprehensive description of the gargantuan seven-month battle for Stalingrad. All stages are described in detail: the advance of the German armies to the city in August, the stubborn and heroic defense of the besieged Soviet 62nd Army against overwhelming German superiority in September-November; and the subsequent encirclement and annihilation of the doomed 6. 1-238640 Staiger, Jorg RETREAT THROUGH THE RHONE VALLEY: Defensive Battles of the Nineteenth Army, August-September 1944 The first English translation of the best German account of the German retreat following the Allied Dragoon landings. Recounts the German retreat and explains how the 19th Army sacrificed divisions to enable its retreat through the Rhone Valley.

The Dragoon offensive in August 1944 was preceded by bombings and sabotage that hit the German forces located in the South of France-damaging communications, railroads, and bridges. The landings were then overwhelmingly successful, despite localized German resistance. The following morning a German force the size of around four infantry battalions was able to launch a counterattack, but by the end of the day von Schwerin ordered a retreat under cover of night. What ensued was a race to retreat to the Burgundian Gate, or Belfort Gap, before they were cut off by the advancing Allied troops. The Allies had all the means for a successful pursuit, while most of the German troops, with the notable exception of the 11th Panzer Division, were largely incapable of undertaking an orderly retreat. Some units, including the LXII Corps headquarters, were surrounded and captured.1 vol, 168 pgs 2023 UK, CASEMATE

1-956092 various WORLD AT WAR # 92: Narvik 1940 (Wargame) Two-player wargame of low to intermediate complexity that simulates the battles around Narvik, Norway in 1940. To control complexity and present an overall force commander's view of the battle, the game uses a tactically scaled map and units of maneuver coupled with an operationally scaled turn length. The Allied player is normally on the offensive, trying to clear the Germans from the Narvik area, but the German player has opportunities for counterattacks. The game starts in mid-April, after the Germans seized control of Narvik and just as the Allies have made their initial landings to begin their counteroffensive. Narvik models a battle fought in Arctic conditions with extremes of weather and long daylight hours. There was a chaotic command system on the Allied side and an overextended force on the German.

Each hex on the map represents 1.5 miles or 2.4km. Each game turn represents one week. Units of maneuver are platoons to battalions representing from 50 to 1000 men. Air units represent a variable number of sorties.

Terrain and weather were also factors that could adversely affect the employment of both armored vehicles and helicopters alike. The dearth of doctrine and tactics for the employment of armored cavalry in a counterinsurgency was equally challenging-especially during the pre-deployment training and initial combat operations.
