du Plessis, Jean Charl LIGHT INFANTRY OF THE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD: Forgotten Heroes of Ancient Warfare
Argues that while light infantry might have had a subordinate role in pitched battles, such big battles were relatively rare occurrences. Most ancient campaigns consisted mostly of foraging, raiding, and pillaging of enemy territory, minor skirmishes and ambushes, all roles in which light infantry excelled. In particular, they were indispensable for an army traversing mountainous or forested terrain. Shows that even in pitched battles they were far from useless and made a valuable contribution, typically harassing the enemy as they deployed and screening friendly battle lines from similar treatment. Some, such as Cretan archers or Balearic slingers were highly sought-after specialists. Demonstrates and tests the various weapons used: slings, bows, and javelins, including the use of the amentum throwing strap. This yields fresh evidence and insights into matters such as range, penetrative power, and the level of skill and practice required. Contains 35 mono illustrations.1 vol, 240 pgs

de Lisle, Gerard THE NILE CAMPAIGN, 1884-1885: The Letters and Sketches of Rudolph de Lisle

Hough, Tony and Gerald Hough DESERT RAIDS WITH THE SAS: Memories of Action Capture and Escape
Hough's war memoir recounts ski training, combat in North Africa, capture, daring escape, and post-war service in Germany. In March 1941, his under-gunned battalion suffered a catastrophic baptism of fire in Libya from 15,000 troops and 500 tanks of Rommel's Afrika Korps. For the next 18 months, Hough and his battalion experienced brutal conflict against a formidable enemy. Selected for David Stirling's elite 1 Special Air Service (SAS), he was captured in December 1942 while raiding behind enemy lines. Sent to an Italian POW camp, he suffered the deprivations of captivity. After the September 1943 Italian armistice, he escaped and, after an arduous three-month ordeal, he reached Allied lines thanks to the help of brave locals. He went on to fight in North West Europe before becoming a mayor in occupied Germany. Contains 32 black and white illustrations.1 vol, 184 pgs

Powers, Arthur NEVER A DULL MOMENT: The 80th Airborne Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in World War II
Explores the history of the 80th AAA Battalion, which was a glider outfit that provided anti-aircraft defense and anti-tank capability to the division's three infantry regiments as battlefield conditions dictated. Elements of the battalion fought in Italy, Normandy, Holland, and the Battle of the Bulge, making combat glider assaults during both Operation Neptune and Operation Market Garden. The 80th AAA battalion was a hybrid unit. While its members were considered Coast Artillery (the branch responsible for defending ground formations from air attack during WWII), they fought alongside parachute and glider infantry, most often providing direct fire, anti-armor support with 57mm/6 pounder cannons. Sokolov, Boris OPERATION BAGRATION: An Incomplete Truth
Analyses the great Soviet offensive in Belorussia in the summer of 1944, contrasting Soviet plans versus German plans of a summer campaign. In depth research sets out to determine the real ratio of the Soviet and German forces as well as their actual losses during the operation. Good decisions, crucial mistakes, and tactical errors are studied to produce a fully rounded view of the campaign. Highlights a connection to Operation Overlord by proving that it was only due to the landing at Normandy that the Soviet forces were able to destroy the German Army Group Centre while the elite mobile forces were concentrated in France.1 vol, 296 pgs
