2-198570 Thomas, Neil WARGAMING NINETEENTH CENTURY EUROPE 1815-1878 Rules for wargaming the conflicts that re-shaped Europe in the period 1815-78. This important, yet often-neglected period includes the Crimean War, the Italian Risorgimento, the wars of Bismarck's Prussia against Denmark, Austro-Hungary and France and the Russo-Turkish war. Tactically, it saw armies struggle to adapt Napoleonic doctrines to incorporate important technological advances such as breech-loading rifles, steel breech-loading cannon, and the first machine guns.

The book includes brief analysis of the essential strategic and tactical military developments of the period. A selection of generic scenarios, covering diverse situations such as flank attacks, pitched battles and meeting engagements, is supported by army lists for 28 different armies.

There are also 12 historical scenarios, ranging from the Battle of the Alma in the Crimean War to Sedan in 1870, the decisive battle of the Franco-Prussian War, each with historical background, deployment map, orders of battle, and any special rules for that engagement. Useful appendices include a guide to further reading, an overview and price guide to the many scales and ranges of figures available, and a selection of useful addresses for the gamer. 1 vol, 208 pgs 2021 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-228050 Elliott, Simon ROMAN BRITAIN'S MISSING LEGION: What Really Happened to IX Hispana? Legio IX Hispana had a long and active history, later founding York from where it guarded the northern frontiers in Britain. But the last evidence for its existence in Britain comes from AD 108. The mystery of their disappearance has inspired debate and imagination for decades. The most popular theory, immortalized in Rosemary Sutcliffe's novel The Eagle of the Ninth, is that the legion was sent to fight the Caledonians in Scotland and wiped out there.

But more recent archaeology (including evidence that London was burnt to the ground and dozens of decapitated heads) suggests a crisis, not on the border but in the heart of the province, previously thought to have been peaceful at this time. What if IX Hispana took part in a rebellion, leading to their punishment, disbandment and damnatio memoriae (official erasure from the records)? This proposed 'Hadrianic War' would then be the real context for Hadrian's 'visit' in 122 with a whole legion, VI Victrix, which replaced the 'vanished' IX as the garrison at York. Other theories are that it was lost on the Rhine or Danube, or in the East. Simon Elliott considers the evidence for these four theories, and other possibilities.1 vol, 208 pgs 2021 UK, PEN & SWORD BOOKS

1-228060 Digby, Michael BURN, BOMB, DESTROY: The German Sabotage Campaign in North America, 1914-1917 The true story of German secret agents engaged in a campaign of subversion and terror in the United States before and during World War I.

Many believe that World War I was only fought 'over there,' as the popular 1917 song goes, in the trenches and muddy battlefields of Northern France and Belgium-they are wrong.

There was a secret war fought in America; on remote railway bridges and waterways linking the United States and Canada; aboard burning and exploding ships in the Atlantic Ocean; in the smoldering ruins of America's bombed and burned-out factories, munitions plants, and railway centers; and waged in carefully disguised clandestine workshops where improvised explosive devices and deadly toxins were designed and manufactured. It was irregular warfare on a scale that caught the United States woefully unprepared. 1 vol, 264 pgs 2021 US,CASEMATE

1-228070 Alpert, Michael THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR AT SEA: Dark and Dangerous Waters The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 underlined the importance of the sea as the supply route to both General Franco's insurgents and the Spanish Republic. There were attempted blockades by Franco as well as attacks by his Italian and German allies against legitimate neutral, largely British, merchant shipping bound for Spanish Republican ports and challenges to the Royal Navy, which was obliged to maintain a heavy presence in the area. The conflict provoked splits in British public opinion.

Events at sea both created and reflected the international tensions of the latter 1930s, when the policy of appeasement of Germany and Italy dissuaded Britain from taking action against those countries' activities in Spain, except to participate in a largely ineffective naval patrol to try to prevent the supply of war material to both sides. The book is based on original documentary sources in both Britain and Spain and is intended for the general reader as well as students and academics interested in the history of the 1930s, in naval matters and in the Spanish Civil War. Includes 8 black and white illustrations, three black and white maps, and various tables.

1-228080 Siegert, Richard THE TIGER FROM POZNAN In WWII, Poznan was a key river crossing and railway junction on the Polish-German border. When the alarm was given indicating the Red Army's approach in January 1945, the city's 80-100,000 German civilians were speedily evacuated, leaving a garrison of some 15,000 men, mostly poorly-armed infantry, to face the rigours of a siege conducted by a massively superior and ruthless enemy anxious to acquire this transport centre, which was vital for the advance on Berlin. Includes 50 black and white illustrations & maps.

Account of Eastern Front veteran Richard Siegert, the gunner and later commander of the defenders' sole Tiger tank. Since the death of the driver in a futile attempt to escape from a PoW camp in Russia just after the end of the war, Siegert is the only survivor of that crew able to pass its record on to posterity. His account details how the crew fought gallantly against impossible odds, even when the Tiger was immobilised and could only act as a stationary anti-tank gun post or pillbox during the last heroic days' fighting for the citadel. 1 vol, 184 pgs 2021 UK, PEN & SWORD

1-228090 Storey, Neil BRITAIN'S COAST AT WAR: Invasion Threat, Coastal Forces, Bombardment and Training for D-Day The whole of Britain's coastline was involved in the struggle against the Nazis. In the early days invasion was the main threat and the Channel counties and cities such as Plymouth, Portsmouth and Brighton suffered grievously from aerial attack. Dover and the 'Hell Fire Corner' in the South East were shelled by German coastal batteries. In the North, Greenock, Gourock and the Scapa Flow saw training of troops for Norway, D Day and other campaigns and the return of rescued crews of sunk vessels of both sides. Includes 200 black and white illustrations

The East Coast was pivotal to North Sea operations against enemy mining and E boat operations. The Western ports, particularly Liverpool, were crucial to the vital Atlantic convoys and the defeat of the U-boat threat.

Preparation for D-Day centred on the South Coast both in terms of planning, training and deployment. The Slapton Sands disaster is covered.

Inevitably the crucial role of Britain's coastal ports attracted enemy bombing and V rocket attention and changed the character of its cities and towns. 1 vol, 272 pgs 2021 UK, PEN & SWORD
