Mersey, Daniel and Raccagni, Gianluca LION RAMPANT: A Viking In The Sun
The Mediterranean Adventures of Harald Hardrada
This expansion for Lion Rampant: Medieval Wargaming Rules explores the Mediterranean world before the crusades through the adventures of the exiled Viking prince Harald Hardrada ('hard ruler'). Harald is best known for his invasion of England in 1066 as king of Norway, and for his death at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, which was a prelude to the Norman conquest of England. However, between 1033 and 1042 Harald spent his formative years as a commander in the famous Varangian Guard of Byzantium, taking part in campaigns in Upper Mesopotamia, Palestine, the Aegean Sea, Southern Italy, and the Balkans.
In this supplement you will find historical information, new upgrades (from new tactics, such as Feigned Retreat, to terrain upgrades, among others), and three mini-campaigns based on extracts from Norse sagas and Mediterranean chronicles. The first campaign is a fight against a bandit boss in the Holy Land during an armed pilgrimage to rebuild the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem; the second takes place during a Byzantine attempt to retake Sicily from its Muslim rulers; and the third one tackles the early stages of the Norman conquest of Southern Italy.
At the same time, there is no requirement to use Harald and the Varangians. This supplement includes five army lists (Varangians, Muslim Powers, Byzantines, Normans, Lombard and Byzantine Italian principalities), and alternative leaders for each of the campaigns with suggested skills based on their back stories. The three campaigns are also easily adaptable to other medieval contexts and to other rules sets.1 vol, 153 pgs

Bruns, James CROSSHAIRS ON THE CAPITAL: Jubal Early's Raid on Washington, D.C., July 1864 - Reasons, Reactions, and Results
Focuses on the reasons, reactions and results of Jubal Early's raid towards Washington DC in 1864. History has judged it to have been a serious threat to the capital, but James H. Bruns examines how the nature of the Confederate raid on Washington in 1864 has been greatly misinterpreted-Jubal Early's maneuvers were in fact only the latest in a series of annual southern food raids. It also corrects some of the thinking about Early's raid, including the reason behind his orders from General Lee to cross the Potomac and the thoughts behind the proposed raid on Point Lookout and the role of the Confederate Navy in that failed effort.
Presents a new perspective by explaining on why things happened as they did in 1864. It identifies the cause-and-effect connections that are truly the stuff of history, forging some of the critical background links that oftentimes are ignored or overlooked in books dominated by battles and leaders.
In an era of battlefield one-upmanship, the raid on the Nation's Capital in July 1864 was prompted by an earlier failed Union attempt to destroy Richmond and free the Union prisoners held there. Jubal Early's mission was in part to let the North have a taste of its own medicine by attacking Washington and freeing the Confederate prisoners at Point Lookout in southern Maryland. He was also to fill the South's larder from unmolested Union fields, mills and barns.
By 1864 such southern food raids had become annual wartime events. And he was to threaten and, if possible, capture Washington. This latter task was unrealistic in an age when the success of rifle fire was judged to be successful not by accuracy, but by the amount of lead that was shot into the air. Initially, the Union defenders of the city were larger former slaves, freemen, mechanic, shopkeepers and government clerks, as well as invalids. They might not have known much about firearms and accuracy, but they were capable of putting ample lead on the long until Regular Union regiments arrived. Jubal Early hesitated in attacking Washington, but he held the City at bay while his troops pillaged the countryside for the food Lee's Army needed to survive.1 vol, 256 pgs

Nash, N.S. THE SIEGE THAT CHANGED THE WORLD: Paris 1870-1871
The Siege of Paris from September 1870 to the city's capitulation in January 1871 was the result of Louis Napoleon III, Emperor of France's disastrous decision to declare war on Prussia. The Prussian Army of King William I proved vastly superior to their adversaries.
After victories at Metz and Sedan, the Prussians marched on Paris virtually unopposed. By 19 September the city was encircled with the population discontented, disillusioned, and rebellious. Civil disorder was rife as starvation took a grip. On the inevitable surrender in late January and the declaration of the German Empire, France's humiliation was complete. This in turn led to the temporary establishment of the Paris Commune an embryonic communist government, and civil war.
As well as providing a vivid description of the siege and fighting, the author of this well researched account analyses the long-term effects be they social, military and political both on France and wider Europe. He argues that while the siege was not particularly costly in terms of human life, its legacy was the reduction of French global influence, the growth of German militarism, the evolution of international communism and changes in the world order.1 vol, 224 pgs

Nachod et Skalitz 1866 End of June 1866. After several months of mounting tensions, war has broken out between Austria and Prussia for preeminent control in Germany. Prussia plans for its troops to cross the Carpathians and penetrate Bohemia by 4 different passages with the objective of confronting the principal Austrian Army in a decisive Napoleonic battle. The outlet of one of these passages was here, near the towns of Nachod and Skalitz. The Prussian V Corps was in position to take control of it and allow the VI Corps to follow it before converging with the other Prussian corps on the centre of the Austrian presence. General Steinmetz is appointed commander of the Prussian 1st Army in 1870 and will have to confront the Austrian troops sent by General Benedek. As a new unit of the series 'Battles in the era of Napoleon III', Nachod-Skalitz is the first game of a series that will cover the principal clashes of the campaign in Bohemia of 1866, concluding with the battle of Sadowa. Players will have the option of playing the battles one after another in a campaign mode, resulting perhaps in a very different situation by the time they arrive at the decisive battle of 3 July 1866. Using the series 'The Great Battles of Napoleon III' (VaeVictis # 55, # 73 and 138), the system is simple and dynamic with an accent on the engagement of the troops against deadly defensive fire. Scenarios by Arnold Giraud-Moser on a system by Luc Olivier.

Art of War and Wargame : Talvisota - The Winter War 1939-1940 (Rules also in English)
In 1939, faced with Nazi Germany's expansionist politics, Stalin demands of Finland some strategic territories necessary for the defense of Leningrad. Helsinki refuses and on 30 November, with no prior declaration of war, the Red Army attacks the Finnish territory with five armies and 28 divisions. The strength ratio is crushingly in the Soviets' favour with 400,000 troops, 1500 tanks and a modern aviation against 265,000 Finnish soldiers and 20 tanks.
To everyone's surprise, the overwhelming numerical and materiel superiority of the Russians is broken by the fierce resistance and the bravery of the Finnish forces. Despite a front extending from the Arctic to the isthmus of Karelia, and the offensives of mostly 3 against 1, the lack of preparation and coordination of Stalin's forces, the extreme climactic conditions and the Finnish belligerence jostle all predictions and overturn military logic. With Mannerheim's troops employing Molotov cocktails, surprise infiltrations, and an optimal exploitation of the terrain to resist the Russian giant until March. But the lack of armament and international support, the limited numbers of troops, and a Soviet surge irreversibly compel the little Nordic outlier to sign an accord on 12 March 1940.
Based on a system favouring the fog of war and the uncertainties of military preparations, Talvisota places both players in a situation requiring them to choose their strategies after careful reflection. Maintaining one's war morale is important, but the decisive results are mainly achieved by considering the potential actions of the other side.
In the solo play mode, the player controls Finland's destiny against the Soviet steamroller with the same intensity of play. 1 vol, 84 pgs

Harmsen, Peter ASIAN ARMAGEDDON 1944-45
Third and last book in the War in the Far East trilogy continues and completes the narrative of how a US-led coalition of nations defeated Japan through a series of cataclysmic encounters. Leyte Gulf, the biggest naval battle ever, was testimony to the paramount importance of controlling the ocean, as was the fact that the US Navy carried out the only successful submarine campaign in history, reducing Japan's military and merchant navies to shadows of the former selves. Meanwhile, fighting continued in disparate geographic conditions on land, with the chaos of Imphal, the inferno of Manila, and the carnage of Iwo Jima forming some of the milestones on the bloody road to peace, sealed in Tokyo Bay in September 1945. The nuclear blasts at the end of the war made one observer feel as if he was 'present at the creation.'
Indeed, the participants in the events in the Asia Pacific region were present at the creation of a new and dangerous world. It was a world where the stage was set for the Cold War and for international rivalries that last to this day, and a new constellation of powers emerged, with the outlines, just over the horizon, of a rising China.
War in the Far East offers a general history of WWII in the Asia Pacific, beginning long before Pearl Harbor and encompassing a far wider group of actors to produce a complete account of this epic conflict. 1 vol, 216 pgs

Snedeker, Don BLACKHORSE TALES: Stories of 11th Armored Cavalry Troopers at War
The stories - and those of their families - of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Blackhorse Regiment) represent the Vietnam generation in graphic, sometimes humorous, often heart-wrenching detail. Collected by the author through hundreds of in-person, telephone, and electronic interviews over a period of 25-plus years, these war stories provide context for the companion volume, The Blackhorse in Vietnam. Over the course of the 11th Cavalry's five-and-a-half years in combat in South Vietnam and Cambodia starting in 1966, over 25,000 young men served in the Regiment.
These combat vignettes begin on 2 December 1966, when a small column of 1st Squadron vehicles and troopers was ambushed on Highway 1 and emerged victorious despite being outnumbered. They go on to describe the one-of-a-kind crossing of the Dong Nai River on 25 April 1968, as the Blackhorse Regiment rode to the rescue during Mini-Tet 1968, and the 2nd Squadron's fight to clear the Boi Loi Woods in late April 1971.1 vol, 256 pgs
